I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can get a desktop eventually with Task Manager however any action after that causes the NT AUTHORITY shut down to occur making it impossible to work with this infection. I have better control in safe mode and can run programs without the shut down. Malwarebytes runs and removes objects but normal startup still has Peak Protection 2010. Is it possible that the MSBLAST is working with Peak Protection 2010 to prevent removal for a normal start up of Windows XP? Thanks you for your advice.

Please can anyone help with a very annoying box that appears on my computer (with XP) every time I log in, with an out of date reminder to upgrade security software I do not have?
A long time ago I had a problem after changing my anti-virus program and I kept getting warnings from BTYahoo that I needed to update their software (which I wasn't using). At that time I had help from this site and managed to remove the old BT Yahoo Applications which I couldn't even see listed under Add/delete programs. I used Revo uninstaller and everything was fine. For the last year I have used Norton 360 but I decided to not renew it and use AVG Free. I have used Norton Removal tools and all seems fine with that, and AVG is running well, but for some inexplicable reason I am now getting the old reminders to update my BTYahoo protection. I do not have the BT Yahoo browser any more, I do not have a login for my ancient BT account as that expired in 2007 and I do not know how to remove this phantom program. Where can I find it to get rid of it if Norton removal and Revo uninstaller can't find it?
What I also have is an icon in the notification area on my taskbar which is for BT Yahoo Online Protection and I can't remove this either. In fact I am wondering if I need it because I have a Yahoo mail account - is this why I am getting the above problem? or is it not even connected?
Any help most welcome.

Hello,

I do not know much about computers so I apologize in advance if I don't understand the basics. I have a brand new HP lap top about 10 months old. I thought I was updating my computer with a windows update but it was actually a privacy protection virus. I followed the steps on the website (thank you!) and discovered 130 infections. I removed them all, the whole time in safety mode, and then my computer restarted normally. I thought everything was fine now but the Privacy Protection icon is still there and the internet explorer continues to crash as before. The Malware software that I download is working because it keeps telling me every second that it's blocking malicious websites.

So right now I'm confused and not sure what more I can do since I did download the Malware software but still can not get the internet to launch ( it keeps crashing). This leads me to believe that the malicious virus is still in my computer. I appreciate any help!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Hello,

A few days ago I updated my torrent provider (Bittorrent), afterwhich I noticed that for some reason Yahoo search had become the start page for my browser (Chrome).

I went into Chrome's settings and changed the home page back to Google, which merely resulted in Chrome loading both Google AND Yahoo on startup. -_-

I let it ride for a day, and then my internet stopped working entirely. Yet, my girlfriend's laptop, iphone, and ipad were all able to connect to the internet, so I knew it was a problem specifically with my computer.

I opened the list of Installed programs in the control panel so as to check if anything odd was installed when updating Bittorrent, and indeed there was--"Search Protection" by Spigot Inc.. I attempted deleting the program, which yielded an error message stating that no files exists for the program. I checked the Task managers for any programs/processes related to spigot or searchprotection were running. There were one or two, which I immediately ended.

Still no internet. I did a system restore to the day before updating Bittorrent. The program disappeared from my installed programs, there were no processes or tasks related to the pesky virus in manager, AND I was able to connect to the internet. WhoopWhoop.

BUT, Yahoo was still my home page in chrome. I noticed however, that the hyperlink looked odd (http://search.yahoo.com/?type=714647&fr=spigot-yhp-ch). Notice "SPIGOT" in the link...Fantastic.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-2010

i booted into safe mode
ran RKill
installed malwarebytes anti-malware

went to run malwarebytes and it crashes after about 2 seconds of scanning. the program then becomes locked, requiring cacls execution from dos. you can open malwarebytes again after this, but the same crash occurs when it scans again.

i read it is preferred to make your own post, rather than follow posts for other infections. so here i am!

what logs do i need to post?
thanks in advance.

I don't have a gold or blue shield next to my name, but I feel that I've got a rather easy way to remove PC Anti-virus 2010 from an infected computer.

(Note: it requires that you physically disconnect the hijacked hard drive to get to the root of the problem)

When it infected my computer it shut down all my antivirus programs (Norton, MalwareBytes, F-Secure's Blacklight), it prevented me from opening both System Restore and the DOS command line, and it re-directed both my browsers to phony web pages that imitated reliable sites. Cnet apparently gave PC Antivirus 2010 a five star rating, if you believe the webpage I was directed to. It also prevented me from downloading antivirus software from other vendors.

What worked for me was a little cable I purchased.......a USB to SATA/IDE drive adapter. For the regular readers and posters of Techguy. org you can skip the next few paragraphs. For those who don't know about this device please read on.

First go to this website for details and pictures: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2006/03/22/brando_usb_2_0_to_sata_ide_cable/

All you have to do is disconnect the ribbon cable (SATA owners, your cable has only 7 wires in it) and plug the adapter into the hard drive. This can be done with the H/D still in the infected computer if it is too hard to physically remove. But the cable kit also has a power supply so that you can pull the hard drive out and set it on the work bench.

Now you need to get the infected hard driv... Read more

I am a bit unsure of difference between malware protection and anti-virus protection. I have Norton nis which is great for stopping Trojans. I have a company that works on my computer if I have a problem. They wanted me to put in a anti malware program. I have been having problems with computer lately, so I let them do this, could this cause a problem, because I know that you are not supposed to run 2 anti-virus programs?
          Anyone?

A:Difference between malware protection and virus protection

Anti-virus and anti-malware programs each perform different tasks as it relates to computer security and threat detection. Essentially, they look for and remove different types of malicious threats. In simplistic terms, an anti-virus program will focus on viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkis and bots while anti-malware programs generally tend to focus more on spyware, adware and PUPS (potentially unwanted programs)?. However, there can be some overlap in functionality and detection features depending on the program's scanning engine, how the vendor defines a specific threat and what Naming Standards are used. Some vendors also add a modifier or additional information after the name that further describes what type of malware it is.The Difference Between Antivirus and Anti-MalwareAntivirus and Antispyware Software: What's The Difference? What Is the Difference Between Antivirus & Antispyware?Use Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware SoftwareTo fully understand the difference between Anti-virus and Anti-spyware (anti-malware) programs, you need to understand the difference between the various types of malware. Installation is very quick and easy.

Taking up to 35-40 MB RAM when idle.
Quick scan nearly takes 5 mins.

Firewall is easily configurable.

Interface is very simple. I guess its because its a beta version. Mcafee total protection 2009 has a different GUI altogether.

Will check on the detections and heuristics later.

Overall a very nice product. But can slow down old computers.
Nevertheless, if you've got 4 GB RAM, would you mind giving 40-50 MB towards security?

XP Home SP3 laptop was infected with PC Antispyware 2010 and Protection System. I found manual removal instructions and removed what I could find from the registry and file system but missed something somewhere. Found braviax running and deleted that and then tried to install anti-spyware software but nothing will run. IE8 loads and crashes. Installed Mozilla but can't get anywhere. Can not get a DHCP address from my router (wireless) but a hardcoded IP works. Can ping external websites but can not open them in a browser. Firewall is not running and will not load. Tried to roll back to before the infection but it says it has been disabled by group policy.

Tried to run DDS but window opens and closes quickly. Watched the processes and DDS.scr loads and find.exe and then DDS stops but find stays running.

Ran RootRepeal and it crashes if I include files in the report option so the report sans files is attached. Thanks in advance!

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING CORPORATE/COMPANY OWNED COMPUTERS

Please do not request assistance for corporate/company owned computers. Many changes/deletions are made during the clean up process, some of which may involve uninstalling programs, deleting folders/files, changing settings and/or removing policies etc. As we have no way of knowing for sure if these are actually needed for company operations, malware issues in these cases should be handled by your own IT Departments in order to avoid any undesirable results.

Hi guys, today we will look at the newest antimalware suite from Panda Security: Panda Global Protection 2010 beta. Its also one of the Windows 7 security providers.

So the installation begins:
After acccepting the license agreement, even before the installer, Panda started a Scan.
Scan finished within a minute.
You will get a Windows Security popup asking if you trust the software.
Also, a restart will be required after installation.
It took around 3-5 mins to install Panda Global Protection 2010 beta 2 and everything went smooth so far.

The update wizard popped up after restarting the system.
Also, an pop up appears to Activate the Product.
After Activation, it provides a 3 months license for the beta.
These are the scanning options. Strange that they did not include a quick scan feature.
During scan, it uses around 35-40 MB RAM. However, they will have to work on the CPU usage. When pulled up task manager, i was surprised to see that there were actually 16 processes running.

PGP 2010 moved all the suspicious files to Quarantine and deleted all infected items. The firewall is also strong.
The detections are impressive.

Under Preferences, it has options to reduce CPU usage and self diagnosis.
It has a lot of settings that makes Panda Global Protection 2010 highly customizable.
It also has Automatic Backup and Optimize Performance option.

Overall a solid protection against viruses and spywares. Really impressive and light weight pro... Read more

Windows XP OS,
I was helping a friend who had continuos Mcaffee pop up errors that would not clear. These occurred on start up and his subscription had expired so we went to Mcaffee and downloaded Total Protection 2010. Now after booting up the following appears:
"ActiveShield is either not installed or is installed correctly. Reinstall". We are able to click the "OK" button and it disappears. The Mcaffee Security Center is all green, protection is on but the message continues to come up on restart.
We uninstalled all other Malware detection programs, still no joy. uninstalled all AOL software (they don't use it) Now the message still appears AND on shutdown A Shutdown Message comes up and says "Mcaffee Firewall Plus Alert is shutting down.........."
then the "program is not responding, and we have to click "End Now". Restart and the other message reappears. I downloaded Mcaffee "Virtual Technician" and it made a couple of "registry corrections" but this didn't help and subsequent checks with it didn't reveal any problems.

Help!!

I was browsing the web and I may have downloaded something bad. First something with the process name 111122223333.exe or something like that crashed and poped up the "it crashed" window. Then all of a sudden this icon that looks like the windows security center icon pops up saying Windows File Protection and says I have something wrong with either my registry, file system, or something else along those lines. Windows Restore has also been disabled. I have tried enabling it and restarting, but it appears to disable it on start up. Have tried booting into safemode but no luck still. I have tried running Malware-Bytes Anti Malware, but it seems to get stuck on checking itself over and over. PC also seems to respond very slow now.
Any help would be appreciated, thinking about formatting it if no help can be found.

You may have purchased many songs from iTunes online store. It will be ok if you just play it on your computers with iTunes, or on your iPod. However, you may need to insert the music in a Power Point presentation, listen it on your mp3 player or set it as background music of your website or other legal personal usage, and you will find you are not allowed.
All the iTunes music files are m4p format, it?s restricted. Is there any way to remove this DRM protection and convert the iTunes songs to widely used mp3 files?
There are some ways that can achieve your goal.
(1) In iTunes, these DRM protected songs can?t be burned to mp3 CD disc, however, you can burn them to audio CD, and then use an audio ripper to rip the tracks from the CD. It may be a waste of CD discs when you have plenty of songs which need to be converted.
(2) Use the program named Noteburner. It has won the award of top DRM removing tool and the third place of audio converter by Top Ten Reviews, please refer to http://audio-converter-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. Noteburner will install a virtual CD burner on your computer, what you need to do is just to set it as default CD burner in iTunes. Open iTunes, operate by Edit --> Preference --> Advanced --> burning, and set Noteburn Virtual CD_RW as your CD burner. If you want to preserve the tags information, including artist, song title, album name, track number etc, you need to check the option ?include CD text?. Not only m4p files ca... Read more

A:Some ways to remove DRM protection

This thread sounds almost like spam, but I'll bite. The problem with all of the applications you've mentioned is that it's transcoding the file - not simply removing the DRM. What you're doing in this process is taking a lossy (usually already low quality ~128kbps or ~192kbps) file - decompressing that to a wave which sounds NO better than the original lossy file, then recompressing the wave to a second lossy format losing even more data about the audio. Best case scenario is start with lossless and transcode to another lossless format - both files should should identical. Second best is transcode from lossless to lossy - you only degrade quality once. Worst case is transcode from a lossy format to another lossy format.

Sorry, but I think even the hard of hearing can hear that a twice encoded lossy file doesn't quite sound right.

Several months ago, I burned 4 ISO images onto DVD's with a program called PowerISO PowerISO - Create, Burn, Mount, Edit, Compress, Encrypt, Split, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive. Upon my discoveries recently, I realized the sizes of the ISO images were intended to be burned on CD's, not DVD's. I investigated if I could format them, but two problems have showed up in discovery:

1.) When I attempt to format the DVD's, I get a message saying that I can't because they are write-protected.

2.) The DVD's are DVD-R's, a format of DVD that cannot be rewritten.

I have looked online to see if there were any forums on how to remove write-protection on DVD-R's and so far, the only forums I've seen were how to remove it on the specific storage format or OS was that it can be only be possible is if I do it before I burn the files onto the disc.

Even though I used DVD-R's, the write-protection message only appears on the DVD's that I burned the image files onto via PowerISO, regardless of using DVD-R's and not DVD-RW's (a format of DVD that can be rewritten.)

From my knowledge, it appears that I can format DVD-R's that did not have image files burned via PowerISO. Therefore, it has to be related to the image files.

If anybody knows how I can remove the write protection off of the DVD-R's with the files extracted from the image file so I can format them, that would be of great help. Otherwise, I just wasted 18.8 GB of removable storage.

Can anyone please tell me how to remove the write protection from a CD-RW?

A:Remove Write Protection From CD-RW.

try this please

Copy the files off the CD into a temp directory on your hard drive.
Erase the CD-R[W] media. Write the files back onto the CD-R[W] media
but this time do NOT finalize the session so you can add subsequent
sessions to mark files as deleted (the TOC in the new session marks the
old file as deleted but that doesn't physically remove the file but
instead just removes access to it).

If you want the CD-RW (must be writable) to act like a big floppy, you
need to get CD burning software that supports UDF (universal data
format) packet writing, like InCD from Nero or DirectCD from Easy CD
Creator. Click to expand...

Read the forum rules:
Circumventing Copy Protection - While we believe it's reasonable to make backup copies of CDs and DVDs that you own, a lot of people break copy protection for the wrong reasons. The law is still vague, at best, as to if it is legal to break copy protection in order to make such a backup, even for personal use. (The DMCA, for example, seems to make it illegal.) As a result, we do not allow discussion of how to break copy protection at this time. If we can find a nice way to draw the line, we may reconsider this in the future as laws get sorted out.
