Preferred Solution: Computer reboots when Playing Video files in Media player 10

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Computer reboots when Playing Video files in Media player 10

First thing to do is to go into Control panel/ system / Advanced tab/ startup and recovery settings/ and turn off the option for automatic reboots.

Then see if you get a blue screen with a error message instead of a reboot.. If you do, then post back with the message.

System reboots while playing WMV video files.

Hello, I wanted to see if someone could help me out. We're experiencing a random blue screen STOP error 0x0000008E while playing WMVs after some hours. It is a seemingly random crash as we've had it occur after anywhere from 30 minutes to 40 hours of playing videos before the system crashes.

We have each hard drive (Western Digital) cloned on different machines, specs are as follows:

Dell Optiplex 620
Pentium 4 Prescott 430 3.0 GHZ
2 512 DDR2 Ram Sticks
2 SATA 80BG and 160GB
PNY Geforce 6800 GT graphics card

We have 6 machines with all of the same specs running the videos and each crash randomly throughout the day. I've used other models of computer and hardware configuration and it seems to be no result. We've tried the following:

1. Replaced the power supply to 375W
2. Swapped hard drives into an earlier computer GX 280 -- got same crash
3. Installed latest Nvidia Drivers 84.21
4. Installed DirectX 9.0c drivers
5. Removed external usb devices
6. Reinstalled computer
7. Installed chipset drivers from Intel

Still no result. We've then looked at the error logs and we're getting the same error which is it points to the kernel:

Hiya

Is this the only site that has this problem? If so, lets try a bit of a cleanup:

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
Apply and OK

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Hello all,

I am having alot of problems with WMP, I have various amounts of video clips, some work perfectly, and a few others don't. Thing is, is I formatted my PC not long ago, and i had my media saved on my xtra drive, and before i formatted, everything worked perfectly. Now, after formatting and putting all my media back on, certain clips won't play properly.

The audio will play, but the video doesnt show. I went on the windows support site, found alot of solutions, but not for WMP 10, and all the solutions for that version arnt working.

I tryed reinstalling, updating e.tc. but still, no luck.

Anyone have any idea of what I can do, any help is greatly appreciated

Hi, I am having a problem with Media Player and have tried everything I can think to remedy the issue short of reinstalling Windows XP.

Whenever I try to play a video file in Media Player 10 I get an error that says "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
There is no error code that I can tell. The error signature says
AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.3250 ModName unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: e991403

The weird thing is that it will play audio files fine. I also have media player 6.4 on the computer (it seems like it is installed when you install Media Player 10) and if I go into the MediaPlayer directory and open that program and open video through it then the video works fine. Video also works fine in every other video program that I run. I also tried rolling back media player to version 9, and I still get the problem.

I know I can use other programs for video but I have a hard time playing internet videos since Media Player isn't working.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,
I have just bought a new machine with Vista Home Premium and it is running great but is not playing video files. I can hear the audio but no video. This happens regardless of whether it is playing inmedia player, or I am creating a DVD in pre installed movie maker or DVD Maker.

Is it just a codec pack or driver files it might be missing... or some other nasty?

Thanks in advance.... Beagleboy.

You could be missing a CODEC, what type of file is it? This utility can tell you: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

There's also a chance that the video card driver needs to be updated, there's lots of little glitches with display drivers at the moment.

I'm running XP SP3 Home Edition. Whenever I watch streaming video, on YouTube, newscasts, TV shows, etc. the computer reboots without warning, sometimes right when I start the video, sometimes a number of minutes in.

I've checked the temp in the BIOS and the CPU doesn't seem to be overheating. I've also disabled "automatic restart on system failure", but that has not prevented the reboots. I can't find anything in the Event Log that relates to this.

I've wondered if my video card maybe cannot handle newer video? It's not on-board, but a PCI card: RADEON 7000 from ATI Technologies, Inc. This card has VGA and DVI, but my monitor only has VGA, so that's what I'm using. I updated the driver to the latest available from ATI (this helped for a bit, but then the reboots happened again). The driver date is 5/3/2006, which is probably the last driver they will ever put out for that particular card.

Any help would be appreciated. I just want to be able to view video!

No matter where I go....our local t.v. channel online, abc, cbs, nbc, etc. I can't play a video with either Windows Media Player 11, or RealPlayer 10. When I click on a video it says "buffering". It gets to like 30% then plays two seconds of the video, then stops (freezes) and buffers again, then stops, then buffers and so on. Or it will freeze on one frame, so I will have a still picture of part of the video and the sound will keep going and play the whole audio portion, but not the picture. Is there anything I can do, or is there something I am doing wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have Windows XP Media Edition on a computer with Intel Pentium D Processor 2.8GHz w/Dual Core, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 MHz, 128MB ATI Hyper Memory (if any of this helps). When I first got this computer I could click on, and play, any video. Now I can't.

Ok - Windows Gurus.

I have windows media player on the machine. Everything has worked smoothly for months now. I now have a problem with media player 10. When I click on a link to view streaming video, the clip will buffer for a bit, then the 1st frame of the video comes up/freezes and the audio continues on.

If I close media player and click on the same clip, both the video and audio work fine. What is causing the video to freeze (audio continues to play) when I click on the video clips the first time around.

If I try to play something locally, there are no problems. It is only with streaming content and this is a new issue. Software wise, I have been authoring a handful of DVDs but outside of that, nothing has changed.

I have tried to reinstall media 10, reinstall the codec packs etc. All other media players play fine (real audio, winamp etc)- no video freeze. So this is only inherent to wmp10. Weird.

Any other thoughts on what has been altered to cause the video freeze?

I am all for suggestions and thanks in advance for the help!

I've not long had Vista (Home Premium) and the windows media player that came with it used to play the .ts files that I'd exported from my digibox hard drive. Then - for apparently no reason - Media Player decided that it was no longer going to open the files, not even the ones that it had opened previously. It came up with the cood1199 error, but I don't understand why it's stopped playing them as it used to. It's infuriating. I don't want to have to download another program to play them when Media Player should - as it *did* - play them. Is there anything that I can do to get it to play what it used to play?

Have you tried a system restore back to when you know this worked or is this to far in the past? Have you tried to play the files with something like Realplayer. I know that you want to use WMP long term but this would confirm that it is a WMP issue.

Windows Media player keeps getting interrupted by "things" other programs?
Media player keeps getting interrupted by "things" - other programs I guess. Both while playing mp3's and music videos. It doesn't shut down. It just sort of shorts out the music... until I guess whatever is finished bothering it.

It happens
-When I try to rename files or move them around in Windows Explorer [not the ones playing].

-While on the internet. No certain reason that I can see. The websites/webpages I have open don't appear to have any media player music playing. It happens when I use either IE or Foxfire browsers.

Is there a button or something I can select that can keep Windows Media Player from being affected by other programs? It is verY irritating.

I have the following MUTED in volume control:
wavetable
line-in
auxiliary

Thanks so much!

Hello,

I have a memory card camcorder that records video as .ASF files (MPEG4 I think too) and until now have had no problem playing back the video files that I have recorded.

I've recently had to do a full system wipe of my computer due to various issues. Now I have a bang up to date version of Windows Media Player 10 as well as all the codecs packs. However the .ASF videos just won't play properly, the videos stop and start every second with huge gaps in between each frame. Windows Media Player also crashes with playing these files, I tried RealPlayer which also delivers exactly the same results.

I'm totally stuck with what to do,

Thanks for any help you will be able to give me in advance,

Sounds like it might be a codec problem. Do a google search for a program called gspot (you can guess why I won't do one at work -.-;; ) It opens a file and reads what codec's its trying to use. Giving that output about the audio and video codec would let us know what those files are using in particular and can hunt down a way to fix it.

My uncle got DSL a couple of months ago and I've downloaded several large and small video clips and saved them to cd-rw's so that I could bring them home and put them on my computer, but I've encountered a problem when I try to view some of the clips. Some clips say ANOBOLIC when I try to open them and they won't play on either my laptop or my desktop pc, but I can open and view them fine on my uncle's computer. The other problem that I am having is that I saved some video clips that range from 15 to 30 minutes, and when I put the cd in either my laptop or desktop pc a couple of the clips say that they are 1 or 2 minutes when they are really 15 to 30 minute clips. ok.
i use vista 64-bit and the media player that came with it plus a codec package from windows. for the past 2 years i have been very happy with it with no problems what so ever. however now, without downloading any patches, my media player has decided it won't play certain videos.

i have some music videos and some films that i have downloaded and they still play just fine. but the ones i have ripped with DVD Fab (i own them btw) have since stopped working properly. they play audio but there is no video. when i play in full screen, instead of getting black like before, i get the same visualisations as if i was viewing an mp3 (the vortex/battery thing)

i downloaded the K-lite codec package thinking it may be that. nothing happened.
i have also noticed that when i view a movie/video, even though i can close the media player [X], it still playing. i can hear it. when i re-open it, its still playing as if i just minimised it.
so i don't know what to do.
(could my G15 keyboard be keeping the file running in the background somehow)

i am not in favour of a 'roll back' (system restore) because i don't know when it started. (not to mention the loss in data)
and for those who don't know. the vista media player is apart of the program. it can't be uninstalled nor re-installed without re-installing all of vista again.
/cry
not a pleasant thought.

thanks for any help you can give me

I've had this issue since installing Windows 7 (32 bit) over 2 months ago and have been actively seeking a fix for the majority of those two months. In windows XP pro (32 bit), I had no issues whatsoever. The problem manifests itself as a complete hang of all system functions and inability to interact with my computer aside from moving the pointer around. This only occurs when I am playing some sort of media (mp3, avi, mp4, mkv, etc) on any media player that I had installed at the current time of testing (WMP12, VLC, Realplayer). The initial response is a hang of the system which then can become a freeze if I click around too much during the hang. After approximately 3-5 minutes the problem is alleviated and the system plays catchup with the video/audio sync.Below is a complete rundown on my system and fixes floating from other threads that I have attempted. My System Spec:

Hello there and apologies if it has been posted before (though I couldn't find it anywhere). I have two PCs running Windows Vista Business 32-bit since the RTM version. In other words they have survived long enough to download updates via Windows Updates, install both Service Packs etc.For some time now I experience the 10 - 25 second delay when playing a MP3 file in WMP. This delay appears to happen only once per Windows boot. Now, this does sound odd so I've tried to troubleshoot myself. When playing an MP3 file WMP launches mfpmp.exe file and this is how it's meant to be even though the files aren't DRM protected. Using Process Monitor I've found that before the process launches wmplayer.exe "pokes around" %systemroot%\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder. By "poking around" I mean querying file information (among other things) on most if not on every file. This introduces the delay during startup of playback as there are about 1400 *.cat files around. It can be clearly seen in Process Monitor summary that it takes even 25 seconds (depending on other hard disk activity) to "get through" the folder. It appears that the module responsible for file activity is CI.dll (code integrity). I would speculate that verifying the signatures (or whatever it's doing at this point) is a prerequisite to the launch of mfpmp.exe which plays the MP3 file. However WMP is checking the *.cat files that doesn't appear to be relevant to medi... Read more

My IT dept. can't figure it out. I was running WMP v. 9 and today I updated to v. 11. It doesn't matter. Still stuttering. I have little Bose desktop speakers. When I go into the control panel on my computer and click on the "sounds and audio devices" icon it says SoundMax HD Audio. I'm assuming that's the sound card? The music files are local on my hard drive. It's driving me crazy....and I'm not a sophisticated computer user. Help. Thank you.

I have the same problem with the same computer. Haven't been able to fix it either.

Hi, I imagine I don't need to include much information as your nice new tool has everything you need.

If however you need more information, I'll do my best.

I would like to send home videos on DVD to my father-in-law in China.

Copies of DVDs I burn do not play in China. I believe DVDs are region specific.

My father-in-law has a PC so I was wondering if there is anyway I could convert a DVD that would run on my player into Windows Media Video format (.wmv)?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Regards

Hi,
I have a Sony DSC-W290 digital camera that take HD video in 720P with the extension of "MP4". I can play the files on my computer with QuickTime player, but when I try to play them with Windows Media Center on the same PC, it says "Cannot play video. One or more codecs required to play this content cannot be found." The first time I tried to play these in Media Center, it downloaded a codec first before attempting to play, but it still cannot play them. How can I make Media Center play these video files?

Thanks-

A:Playing MP4 video files with Media Center

Try to convet the mp4 to WAV, then play the wav file you converted to and see what happens.
I think this is a trial but you can find other free ones at http://download.com

Hello there guys, I am having a real problem with my Windows Media Player 11 playing .avi files.

My digital camera records videos and they have played on my machine with WMP no problem at all until yesterday. When I click on the file to play it it says "Window Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assitance, click Web Help."

I have had had a good around and I can't resolve this problem. The problem seems to have occured since I installed DivX Player, Codec etc.. (the installer package). Since then I have tried uninstalling it to go back to how it was and also tried doing a system restore to the point before but still the same problem.

Don't know what to do but this problem also effect Windows movie maker, it won't player the avi files in there either, please help.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium

A:[SOLVED] .avi files not playing in Windwos Media Player on Vista after DivX installed

Hi ellisd5, as far as i'm aware Divx is not Vista compatible but don't quote me on that. Best thing I can suggest is to download and install the latest stable release of K-Lite codec pack as that may restore normal functionality to your avi files (be sure to remove any currently installed codec packs first though).

Hope that helps

I downloaded a new WAV file yesterday, and when I opened it in Media Player 9, the screen was blank, but the sound was playing. I tried some of my other WAV files, and the same thing. They were working fine last week, Whats up?? I also tried my ATI file player and the same thing happened.

Thanks in advance.

So I have been trying to play/rip this CD I just got, but I have been having no luck at all. It will start playing the song, and continue playing the whole song, but the rest of the computer crashes so I am forced to restart. I don't get why one program would crash the whole computer like that... I've also tried to rip the CD, and it would rip about 4 tracks and then the computer would crash and it would stop. Anyone having a similar problem or know how to fix this one? It is an imported Japanese CD by the way, not sure if that matters or not.

I have been trying to add video that I have recorded on a DVD disc to Windows Media Player.

The disc will play when WMP is accessed and the output is good. I need to transfer the files into my library so that I can import them into Windows Movie Maker.

However, WMP will not transfer files from a removable media. I have tried copying the files from the disc to my videos folder, but the recording is in TS Video on the disc and cannot be read.

How can I transfer the data from the removable DVD to WMP or import them directly into Windows Movie Maker?

Very grateful for your advice.
Thanks

I am having a problem viewing my PAID FOR and downloaded iTune TV shows on iTunes/Quicktime because of freezing videos, etc. after iTunes upgrades--even after all of Apple's suggested fixes. I was told VLC played anything so i downloaded it, hoping I could just avoid using Quicktime altogether. I assumed that all I needed to do was get into the particular MPEG-4 video file and "open with" the VLC media program; The VLC window opens and the slider moves, but I get nothing, no audio, no video. I'm hoping I'm merely overlooking something simple. Anyone have any experience using this media player for videos? Thanks.

A:Can I get VLC media player to play mpeg4 video files?

It does play them, yes. Its an alternative to those well known players. I don't understand why you can't play it in Quicktime, Realplayer or VLC. It should play unless you have some OS or software issues.

Is the file in true MP4 format and can you play it anywhere else?
Have you tried playing anything else in them with a similar file format and size?

I transferred some .mov files from my iphone to my laptop using Dropbox. In Dropbox, there is a green check meaning the file is completely transferred.  When I open Dropbox on my iphone, I can access the .mov files.  However, when I open Dropbox on my Windows 7 laptop, some .mov files work (everything in Sept) but some .mov files (everything from Oct 1 and on) only have audio but no video.  What is the issue?

A:.MOV video files won't play on windows media player

OK, I was told to install LAV filter and uninstall ffdshow.  That worked.  Maybe Apple used a difference video codec starting Oct. 1.  Anyways, that seemed to solve the problem.  However, the Oct mov files now only show icon.  I can't get it to show thumbmail like the Sept mov files.  Under "Tools" and "folder options" and "view" I unchecked "Always show icons, never thumbnails". But it only applied this to the Sept .mov files and not the Oct .mov files. The Oct .mov files still show an icon. How do I make them all show thumbnail?

This doesnt happen with every video I play, but in many of them when it gets to the last 2-3 min sometimes the video will freeze and the audio will keep going. At that point, the audio finishes till the end of the file, and then I have to close WMP using ctrl-alt-del because it stops responding. I'm pretty sure that it's not the videos themselves since I never have any video issues with them playing on my laptop. This only happens on my desktop system.

Is there any sort of known issue with this happening? Any tips?

Thanks in advance.

I'm at my wits end.

I put together a capable gaming pc about a month ago with a bunch of new components and some cannibalized older components.

I installed all of the drivers from the motherboard cd. I have a radeon x1300 vid card. I'm running windows xp home ed. I've installed about every codec and plugin under the sun. I've troubleshot my load with regard to Windows itself.

I cannot play Windows Media Audio/Video files for the life of me.

I do get audio, but the video is all hyper-colored like looking at scrambled porn.

It doesn't matter if I download the video or watch it in a browser (any browser). It doesn't matter if I open up the DLed video in real player, Windows Media player or Generic DIVX player #458973: it still comes out all scrambled and in crazy moon-man rainbow colors.

I have no problem playing any other type of windows media player file. Quicktime works fine as well.

Please help.

A:Windows Media Player won't properly play Windows Media Audio/Video files

Well standard Window's media files should play without the need for any additional codecs.

Maybe check the forums of your vid card for some answers.
