T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

Q: T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash. The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs. On reboot the system comes up without issue. No user has actually seen the crash take place. MY QUESTION(S):1st. Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd. Is this something altogether different? Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

Hi, I bought my P50 like 4 months back and suddenly it has started to throw this error when the machine is starting up."2100: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)". I have run the tests in BIOS mode and all the tests got passed. I have faced the error 2 times now and after keeping the machine down for few minutes and switching back on resolved the issue. But I can't be sure it will solve the issue next time.Just bit of a background to the error. I have started my machine this morning, and from Windows login screen machine sudddenly restarted saying "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION". And on the restart I got the error. I do have a feeling that this not related to actual hardware, but firmware etc.  Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks.Jaliya

My P51 was bought with 500GB hard disk and I replaced it with Samsung PM961 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD. Windows 10 was installed on the SSD and all ran well. Then my P51 began to have this intermittent 2104 errors. Sometimes, I left the laptop running and hours later, the screen is showing the error message as shown in the attached picture. If I press ESC, then I cannot see the PM961 ssd either in the boot manu or in the Lenovo page through the App manu. In summary, the PM961 ssd just disappeared. I have to give the P51 a cold start and all will be running fine. Things I tried: 1. Keep BIOS updated. Now it is latest version (N1UET47W 1.21). 2. Re-install/seat the SSD on different slots. This 2104 error just keeps coming back randomly once per 1-2 weeks, which is really frustrating. I will appreciate any suggestion or comment on this.

I bought my P43s about 2 months ago, I added 16 GB of RAM and a Crucial P1 1TB NVME M.2 SSD to the laptop. After a month of regular use, I started getting the following error: 2101: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD).  Here is the troubleshooting that I have done:- Checked the SSD to ensure it is well position into its connection.- Updated the Bios.- I thought the issue was due to a faulty SSD but after I put the original SSD back in and returned the Crucial SSD, it still got the error. Now I am really not sure what the issue is. Is anyone having a similar issue? Could it be a problem in the miniSATA connection? Thanks

My X1 Yoga with a 512 GB hard drive just started getting the "2101 Detection error on SSD (M.2)" on boot.  When I am able to get it to boot it stays up for 10-30 minutes, then freezes and/or reboots. I have seen numerous postings in this forum and elsewhere but no definitive description or solution. Lenovo support refuses to answer any questions as the laptop is out of warranty. This is clearly a defect and KNOWN to Lenovo - yet I cannot find any resources to help solve the problem.  How is that even possible? If this is not addressed by Lenovo this will be my very last purchase from them. Does ANYONE have concrete information as to what this problem is and how to fix it? thanks

This is less than 1 week old X1 Extreme Gen2. I had to repair my ideapad 530s three times and wasted so much time on that so I thought let's try "professional" instead of "media" laptop. I reused my Crucial 1TB NVME SSD that was working just fine in ideapad and stuck it in X1. What I'm seeing in X1 are random freezes, parts of the drive not being accessible, whole drive not being accessible and finally 2101 boot errors. What I tried so far: made sure all drivers are up to date, swapping SSDs in the two slots (stock Intel 256GB with Crucial 1TB), using 1TB drive with external USB-C caddy and placing the 1TB drive back into ideapad. SSD works perfectly fine when out of X1 and creates the same errors regardless of where I place it inside the X1. I also tried some third party drive health check utilities, they all said the drive is fine and Lenovo's boot utility/system checker said the same as well. EDIT: I also tried changing Lenovo power saving plan so that disk never goes to sleep if laptop is plugged in. Another thing I also noticed is that every time I will plug in or out either power cable or headphone jack the screen will go black for a second or two, as if I was connecting an external monitor. Not sure what is going on with this machine. I'm trying to backup data right now and I type this on ideapad. Is there anything I can try before I return this laptop? After struggling with this fault on my T430 for many years, and reading (almost) all there is on the interwebz, I'm disappointed to see many laptops are affected by it and Lenovo hasn't (so far) given out an official word on the subject (apart from installing Express Cache on Windows 7). I understand the problem is specific to Lenovo and due to BIOS, not hardware. Apparently a few have had this problem despite not having an msata drive which is strange... This is an attempt at summarizing the experience and stop-gap solutions until (hopefully) Lenovo can say/ do something about it My specs.T430 Core i7 3840QM (mod). Discrete graphics with latest BIOS v. 2.82. 16 GB RAM, FHD (mod). Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

Casually. In very random situations. I still find it very frustrating and I was hoping someone has any solution. Thanks and have a nice day

I'm worried that it will get to the point where it won't startup again (and it is a huge pain when I am working and it goes BSOD on me).  There was nothing installed or any physical shock to the machine that would have led to this happening when it did.

Hello everyone,
One fine evening while watching a movie, my laptop stopped responding and in frustration I switched off the laptop by holding the power button long enough to turn off. Next Morning it showed a blue screen and a message to recover my windows, which I failed to do and by the afternoon this message showed up. Detection Error on HDD0 (main HDD) and hence forth I've been unable to install windows from a USB drive since ( and I suppose) it is not able to read my HDD. I do not care about my data at all, I just want my laptop up and running. If I can have the data back it will be perfect otherwise I don't mind not getting my data back. I know for a fact that my Hard disk is fine because I went into command prompt, diskpart , and list disk, and saw the status of HDD as healthy, this is after the error (detection error on HDD). SO my question is: Why this error? IS there a problem in the motherboard? Why the error shows once and then doesn't show the next time and then comes up again.

A:2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD); Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga

The error might be bad sectors, but I'm not sure. if my guessing is correct, you might have to get a new drive to replace. also you need to reinstall OS

Hey guys, my drive broke down recently  2100 Detection Error on HDD0 on my t420 thinkpad. I tested the hard drive on another computer as well via sata cables and it isn't turning on. So I figured on buying another HDD right? Well I have been looking up online about this issue and I saw that another possibility for harddrive malfunction could be my motherboard, data controller or something else shorting the hard drive. So I don't want to buy another hard drive and have it be shorted again. So my question is whether I am free to buy another HDD or if something is shorting my hard drive and if so how can I test to make sure that nothing in my thinkpad is shorting the hard drive.  Specs:Lenovo Thinpad T420  refurbished i7 8gb ramHDD-2.5"-SATA (some generic looking hardrive I can't anysort of brand on it ) pic attached

The next time I started it up, Iwas presented with an immediate error after the logo of "2101 Detection error on SSD(M.2)". Booting into BIOSor UEFI diagnostics doesn't show any options for diagnosing the SSD. What is odd is there is no M.2 SSD. ?Right nowI am traveling and don't have a SATA-USB cable or another drive to try, but is there any possibility this is something other than my SSD failing completely? System does not boot. Things I have tried already: Reseating the SATA cable, Resetting BIO S to default settings, "Power Cycling" the SSD. All checks in UEFI diagnostics pass.

Hello,I just purchased new SSD ADATA Pro SP900 256GB SSD and when I want to boot my computer I got error2101  Detection error on HDD1 (mini sata). At the first start, there was no error and everything seems working but when I try to open SSD in windows, the disk was uninitialised. I tried to initialise it but without success, so I reboot the notebook and got this error. I installed lastest bios, try to remove SSD wait some time and reinsert it but the error still appear. Does anybody have solution? I figure that this error is quite common. Thanks

I bought a Netac N930ES-256Gb M.2 2242 PCIe Gen3*2 NVMe SSD. I installed it in a Lenovo X250. Unfortunately when I boot the system the BIOS says2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) I have cleaned the contacts using contact cleaning solvent and it has made no difference. I'm wondering if this MVMe is compatible with the X250. Could someone please be so kind as to link me to the supported M.2 MVMe specifications for the Lenovo X250? Thanks,Ben Stanley.

A:Lenovo X250 + Netac N930ES M.2 2242 PCIe Gen3*2 = BIOS error 2101

Hello and welcome,

Everything I can find indicates that the m.2 slot supports SATA drives, not PCIe/NVMe.

Hi, Today, 3-Oct-2018, at around 11.30 CET, whilst working on my X1 Yoga 20FQ laptop, system crashed and tried to reboot itself. First it gave a winowds blue screen (0x000021a) error and then a 2100: detection error on storage device (M.2) error. I was aware that some updates were running in the background but I can't pinpoint an exact item Can't reboot at all now - unsure what to do now. Any suggestions?

Hi, I get the error when I start the laptop and after some time the window will start to work withount any problems and after some time it crashes.I didn't install a new SSD or any new hardware. I updated all drivers and bios but still the same error. I also followed the steps to open the laptop, clean it and reinstalled SSD to make sure it was not loose. I also downloaded multiple third party software to check the health of the system and everything looks to be working fine. I also tried the lenovo diagnostic during booting still no error.
