ADWCleaner and Windows XP not starting

Q: ADWCleaner and Windows XP not starting

Hello I hope you will be able to help me with this.
I ran ADWCleaner on a Windows XP SP3 machine and after the clean process it asked to restart the PC to complete but now XP does not start. It gets as far as the second (higher def) Windows xp startup screen and then just hangs with occasional HDD accesses and a responsive mouse pointer. It does the same in any of the safe modes and from the Last Known Good Config option.
So far I have ran chkdsk from the XP Recovery Console , it found some errors but that has not fixed the problem.
I have looked in system~1\_resto~1 directory and found there are no restore point directories listed.
I was about to try a manual registry restore but have found that there is no SYSTEM file in system32\config\ though there is a system.bak file
That is as far as I have got so far. Any help would be much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Windows won't run after AdwCleaner reboot

Can you boot to Safe Mode ?
If so, run Rkill and then Malwarebytes with NO reboot inbetween the two scans....If malwarebytes asks for a reboot that is ok....do so.
Please download RKill by Grinler from the link below and save it to your desktop.
Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply.

Hi guys!
New to the forum, but have cruised the site in the past, very helpful. I downloaded the latest version of ADWCleaner, but it crashes after I run a scan and hit the "Clean" button. It gathers information, then restarts my computer.  I have a new Dell XPS8700 with Windows 10, 24 gigs of ram, etc. Any ideas or suggestions?

A:ADWCleaner crashes when I run it in Windows 10

Please activate Debug Mode as follows so we can see a report which may be helpful with identifying the problem.Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to open the tool.Click on Options in the top menu.Put a check mark next to Activate debug mode.Click on the Scan button.A logfile report called AdwCleaner_dbg_XXXX.log (where XXXX represents the time run) will be created and saved to %systemdrive%\AdwCleaner folder (usually C:\AdwCleaner).Copy and paste the contents of AdwCleaner_dbg_XXXX.log in your next reply.

I'm not the most computer savy person out there, so I've been struggling a bit with my laptop lately. (It's slowed down, particularly where internet is concerned.) Earlier today I encountered a problem where my laptop seemed to recognize mouse clicks where there were none, no matter how cuatious I was to make sure I wasn't accidentally hitting anything. I ran a scan with Norton, which only cleared a few tracking cookies, then tested AdwCleaner, which came up with this:

According to the only person I know who's taken the time to learn anything about computers beyond how to use them for entertainment and google, I shouldn't mess with anything in my registry. But when I ran a search of those first two items (which looked weird compared to the others) I came up with results about malware that takes bank info.
Should I let AdwCleaner take care of it? I don't want to screw up my laptop any further. I've also seen a few posts about malware that comes back easily, so would AdwCleaner be enough?

A:Adwcleaner reporting problems in registry - Windows 7

Hello, and I hope we can help. Those items are "generally" accepted as bad minor infections, and can be removed. Please download these to desktop, and Copy and Paste any logs. First - This is a "basic clean-up" and we will go further depending on your answers. Please download and run RKill by Grinler. A black DOS box will appear for a short time and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully. At most the tool will usually run for about 2 minutes Please Copy / Paste the small log back here. Important: Do not reboot your computer until you complete the next step. * NOW :* Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop. * Double-click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool. * Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. * Click on the Scan button, only once for a good report * AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete. * After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.* Check the removals and see if you are OK with the list. You can always Copy and Paste the SCAN log here if you wish -* Now * Click on the Clean button, only once for a good log. * Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts. * Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process. * After... I have Windows 8.1. My programs are now are exceedingly slow and Chrome won't do anything after opening. (I'm renting this hp Pavillion 20 All in one., but it's my SSD and OS). I uninstalled Norton suite (because of slowness) and wanted to use Adwcleaner per usual and the "smart" screen bar says it's not for Windows 8.1 and to contact the maker. I've never had an issue using it in the past.
Also, tried to reinstall Norton 360 Suite X2, after using the norton uninstaller,  but at the very end it spins and never finishes installation.  Used Symantic Erasure (with support) but without any significant results.  So I put in Iobit antimalware 3.0 and the latest Zone Alarm firewall. Any thoughts? All clear from the Iobit scan.
This is odd, but please don't bother with detailed advise about virus removal,I'll re image soon after I give this slow rental back)  But, I'd still like to use Adwcleaner. Hm. Thanks if anyone can give me an idea of what's happening. Erasure did the rootkit check too.   Rob

A:Suddenly, Adwcleaner per Windows 8.1 wrong type?

Hi Rob,From what I know, AdwCleaner is compatible with Windows 8.1. You can temporary disable SmartScreen if you need to run AdwCleaner. And also one piece of advice from me: Don't use IOBit products.Personally, I do not trust any company that creates so-called "optimization" products, bundles unwanted software into their installations and not allowing users to opt out, and stole intellectual property from other companies - in this case, database signatures from Malwarebytes Corporation.I recommend that you uninstall IOBit Malware Fighter and use a reputable AV software, along with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or Emsisoft Anti-Malware for additional AM protection.Regards,Alex

Hey all, first post and everything.
My little brother, brilliant boy that he is, installed some program that was supposedly a better Steam with better sales. Of course this program was littered with viruses. I proceeded to run Avast, which froze up and could not enable the firewall anymore. Then went into the Control Panel and uninstalled Wajak which was popping inappropriate ads all over everything and Steam. I saw that a program called One System Care was there as well, but I couldn't remove it off of the Control Panel.
Afterwards I ran adwcleaner and it removed One System Care and Lavasoft Web Companion. Unfortunately after that finished the computer lost access to the internet. It shows that it's connected to the Network, but neither ethernet and Wireless are working. I've tried:
- Checking the Internet Options to see if a Proxy was enabled.
- Checking if the DNS was messed with in the Network options.
- Ran Rkill.exe
- Ran MiniToolBox.exe
- Ran JRT.exe
- Flushed the ipconfig, ipv4, ipv6 in cmd.
- Reinstalling the Ethernet and Wireless drivers.
- Restarting the computer afterwards.
And none of that has helped. He is still unable to access the internet after all that. I'm out of ideas, hope you guys can help. Not sure what other information I can provide.

Have you tried resetting Winsock and TCP/IP. Sometimes Winsock gets corrupted after removing adware.
Type CMD in the search box Right Click > Run As Administrator.  Type the following then reboot.

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Well, my last topic (found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/574099/frst-logs-serious-trouble-with-my-win7-machine-no-idea-whats-going-on-help/#entry3688516 ) was closed while I was travelling, so I'm starting a new one. All relevant information about my problem can be found in the old topic, which was closed because I didn't reply quickly enough. I followed the user nasdaq's advice and ran the fixlist.txt file with FRST, then ran AdwCleaner. Attached are all my logs, text files and such. Please let me know if there is any other relevant information I can provide.
Update: as of right now, this did not fix my problem. The computer is still unable to update, is still randomly freezing and crashing, and every time I restart the MSE service is missing even if I replace it before restart. The time also keeps getting set one hour faster every restart.

I recently installed/run AdwCleaner v4.110 and let it delete some files and registry keys on my Vista pc. I was just trying to clean some traces of old/residual infections. Everything was fine prior to the install. Now windows explorer stopped working as well as my installed programs have selective start-up. Sometimes they start, other they wont.
Firefox would default to its home page, but I cant open anything further, no web search, simply unresponsive! Everytime I type web address or google search - nothing happens. As for IE, it shows "internet connection".
I tried to run/update Malwarebytes but it wont let me. I tried rebooting in Safe Mode but it did not help, I get the exact same issues as in normal mode. Another problem is that there are no Restore Points as I had System Restore turned off.

First, let me state that I`m already being assisted by a member, however the topic started in the Malware section; I believe someone with expertise in Windows XP would be very useful as we seem to be running out of options.
the topic can be found here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/573199/pop-ups-malware-and-unwanted-redirects-adwcleaner-trouble-as-well/?view=getnewpost
In short, I used adwcleaner incorrectly and cleaned critical sections of XP....I`m not exactly clear what those sections were but my functions where certainly compromised. I asked for help and was receiving assistance, but things went from bad to worse when I was told to uninstall my browser...under normal circumstances this would not have been a problem, I believe. Yet, with the compromised XP I seemlingly have no way to reinstall any browser. (I`m currently at a internet cafe and have been using my Iphone)
Moreover, the restoration function and administrative functions all seem to be compromised, so we cannot seem to undo what we`ve done.
I`m requesting assisantance from anyone with experiance with XP, at this point my main goal is to simply restore the PC and or reinstall a Browser.
Regards, and much thanks

Hey, I've never actually asked my own question on one of these forums before, but this is becoming a problem that really needs fixing.
I've been able to fix adware problems on my friends', family's and my own computers before with Adwcleaner and it has always worked quite successfully, until I got a Windows 10 computer. Now when I try and run the 'Clean' function, I get the blue screen of death with the words 'Critical Process Died Error', and I haven't found a way to get around it.
Could anyone please help me - is it just an incompatibility with Adwcleaner and Windows 10 or is there a way to fix this?

A:Adwcleaner not working on Windows 10 - Critical Process Died Error

A lot of adware was downloaded to my wife's laptop, and I was trying to remove it.
The problems included Strongvault, some adware (coupons in several flavors) and a registry cleaner.
After ahving successfully uninstalled several programs, and cleaned up the adware, there were still remnants of Strongvault.  Whenever the Laptop started, it would attempt to install something, and the event viewer pointed to Strongvault.
I first ran Malwarebytes' AntiMalware software wich found some things I had not seen earlier, but the install rpoblem persisted.
I then ran "Hitman Pro" and after that the problems started.
If I start Windows normally, it stops and asks me to run Startup Repair or Start windows normally.
Startup Repair truies to restore to the last good image, but the system restore fails.
I tried to start up in safe mode which works.
When going into the startup options, I can also start windows normally, and it starts up, but not with the usual settings, such as the see-through task bar etc, but things appear to work.
When the normal start fails, there are nothing in the event viewer to clue me into what the problem would be.
Does anybody have any suggestion as to what I can try to get some traces to see where things go wrong?

A:Not starting normally, but starting from startup options menu using normal start

Have you looked at msconfig?
Click start and type in msconfig and press enter.  Under the Services tab click the "hide all microsoft services" check box at the bottom and you can safely turn everything off, and then under the Startup tab you can turn everything there off.  This will at least boot cleanly and you can see how things go.
Understand some of these services and startup programs may be something you use all the time, so if there's something missing that you need starting up with the system go back through the services and startup sections and look for the one you want.  The biggest problem I usually see with people that are new to using msconfig are printer / scanner / digital camera related (Lexmark is usually indicated with an lx... listing, and hp digital imgaing for auto starting your camera / scanner software)
Just another road to explore if you haven't already.

I have a Sony VAIO laptop that seems to have gotten some form of malware or virus on it.  The machine specs are:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Intel i5, 6 GB RAM.
The problem I am seeing is when I boot up the laptop and it gets to the starting windows screen with the blurred windows logo.  Then the screen goes black.  There is still hard drive activity and I hear the Windows start up chime but the screen remains black. I've let it run for up to 20 minutes but even though it shows hard drive activity the screen stays black.  There are no error messages.
I can boot into safe mode and safe mode with networking, which I did and looked for unusual programs.  I found ScorpionSaver Services and found a removal tutorial on your site via a Google search.  I tried the steps in safe mode and things seemed to work but even though Malwarebytes found a lot of stuff (which I removed) I still could not boot into windows and ScorpionSaver Services is still there.
I don't know if this is related or if it is a different issue but I will mention it here just in case it is helpful.  It appears that there is a browser hijack going on too because even in safe mode with networking I cannot navigate away from search.conduit.com.
I am pretty much stuck.  In the past I have had to work my way through one of those Ransomware attacks on a friend's computer and thought this might be si... Read more

Am i suppose to click on each tab such as services, folders, files and all the other ones and do it individually? Reason i ask this is b/c when i clicked on a few of them, it does seem to show progress and scan something. When i just click scan while its on services, it doesn't seem to do anything at all.

Since you are not having problem, I would not touch the registry. If it is not broken do not try to fix it.

My computer has been acting weird over the last 3 - 4 days.
I go to Facebook every day. I play some games on Google Chrome but there are two games that I have to play on Firefox because they are too slow on Google.
On Google when I open FB the pictures on posts open in steps, the page is slower to load and when I go to load one of the games it is slower and when I finally get in it is skittish and the pointer fluctuates.
On FF they have been super fast but now it is taking forever to load the games and when I do it is super slow to do anything.
Normally I don't have a problem but just lately there have been problems on both Google and FF.
I know that Facebook have made changes to their site and I don't know whether that may be the problem.
I have made sure everything is updated. Used CCleaner. Cleared cache etc. Deactivated Java. I use AVG and have done a full system scan. I have Adblock. I have made sure there is only one Shockwave Flash working.
I downloaded the Junkware Removal Tool and did a scan. It deleted some and repaired others.
I downloaded the AdwCleaner and it has finished scanning but I am not sure what to leave ticked. I don't want to remove something that is going to cause me problems.
I have written the single line ones but I took a screenshot of the multiples.
Could someone please advise me?

A:Help please regarding AdwCleaner!

Welcome to BC !
Allow AdwCleaner to remove all that it found. Rerun it and post the log following the instructions below. No one program will
find all the adware and malware. Use ALL of the programs below.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

Hello my friends,

After running it find's AVG tool, some registy and browser abdata.

But for the browser abdata was no click option.
I want only AVG TOOL to remove and clickt only for that, the other findings are uncheckt.
Anyway, after the cleaning my browsers chrome and firefox are not working proberly.
I can't have the extensions I  want. The browsers crashes all the time.On chrom every time I log in a pop up window appears
''it can find file data''...
After that nothing help:
reinstall chrome and firefox fails.
Windows restore fails too.
The only think I find is to remove my old windows entry.
And make another  with a new name.
What is your opinion! Thanks for your good information!
P.S.On the older ADWCLEANER versions never had a problem.

Hello leonidaso -
When you run AdwCleaner, first run Search Mode to see if it lists any problems.
Then you can see if any items should be removed.
Xplode has now issued a re-written version, so all previous usage ideas must be reviewed.
I am currently translating his site (French) to find the better operating methods.
For now just use Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free (aka MBAM), and SUPERAntiSpyware Free (aka SAS)
Thank You -

AdwCleaner is a free portable adware cleaner created by Xplode (a BC Security Colleague) that will search for and remove many potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), adware, toolbars, browser hijackers, extensions, add-ons, browser helper objects (BHOs) and other junkware to include many related registry entries (values, keys). It will also clean FF and Chrome extensions and Add-ons. When first run AdwCleaner includes options under the tabs to show what was found and to allow disabling detections you want to keep since not all detections are necessarily bad. The only things you can't uncheck is Chrome and Firefox preferences lines but you still can view them in the "Chrome" and "Firefox" tab. If a detection is made the preference line will be removed when running the tool. In some cases AdwCleaner may detect items related to legitimate programs...if in doubt about a particular detection, a Google search should be performed to gather additional information before removal. The contents of the AdwCleaner log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you recognize and know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, return to AdwCleaner before cleaning...all detected items will be listed (and checked) in each tab. Click on and uncheck any items you want to keep.AVG Security Toolbar and AVG Secure Search (created by the makers of AVG Anti-virus) are optional add-ons when installing their anti-virus product if you choose "Customiz... I'm new here but I've registered to post a really bugging thing! Every time I download AdwCleaner.exe my Norton software analyzes it as bad! Today it blocked it completely! I like the program but is it bad or good? I investigated it a bit and Norton said it blocked it as no one hardly uses the program and therefore it must be bad. Norton also said something about the program developer should apply for 'whitelisting' given the program is so sparingly used and then it would not block it. I've used it a lot in the recent past but I can't get it back on my PC. Can anyone help? Thanks!

The truth is that tools used on uor forums to deal with adware/malware are very often marked as suspicious by AV vendors. Be assured that AdwCleaner is safe and not infected.
The reason for being marked as harmful is they contain usually very strong inbuilt parts to deal with malware (like process killers, strong file removers), which appear suspicious to AV's.
Submitting it as a false positive to AV companies is pointless, because they do not check the version and each time an update to AdwCleaner or any other tool is released - the history goes on and on.

You wanted to remove adware and that is what AdwCleaner did. System Mechanic is more likely to cause problems than it is
to solve any you may have. Those registry cleaning and defragging tools can cause serious problems.

The other day I downloaded AdwCleaner, I am concerned because when I run the program it says AdwCleoner with a cross in the middle of the o.  Have I downloaded the correct program?  The icon on my desktop is not yellow - it is like a gray shadow.  It never installs when I run it - to use it I run it each time.  The first time it found several items that needed to be removed.  After running AdwCleaner I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it found several items to remove as well.  One being - C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine\C\Program Files\Conduit\Community Alerts\Alerts\Alert.dll.vir(PUP.Optional.Conduit) ->Quarantined and deleted successfully.  Now AdwClean hangs up and freezes computer when it cleans browsers.
Have I downloaded the correct program and has the Quarantined and deletion of AdwCleaner By Malwarebytes caused AdwCleaner to stop working correctly?
