Thinkpad X1 Extreme and WD Black SSD

Q: Thinkpad X1 Extreme and WD Black SSD

I just got my new Thinkpad in and wanted to install a second drive with Linux on it. The bios sees the drive and I've already installed the OS on it but when I chose it it won't boot. It just keeps booting to the primary drive with WIndows 10 on it. Can anyone tell me if the WD SSD drives won't work for some reason in this computer? The drives are listed as supported for the X1 I know. Seems strange it would work in the X1 and not the X1 Extreme. Thanks, Glenn

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After messing around in the BIOS a day after getting a new thinkpad x1 extreme I decided to change one of the display settings from using hybrid graphics to using the discrete graphics.  Ever since then, the laptop boots up fine but everything is black including the BIOS. Can anyone help me out?

I'm having a problem with my ThinkPad booting. I press the power button, the fans spin up, and the screen turns on to a black screen with a single tiny white cursor in the top left corner. Nothing else happens past that. It never gets to the Lenovo logo, and I left it overnight to see if it would eventually progress through the boot process, but it doesn't. The fans spin up, so the computer must be doing something to get warm. This started happening for no rhyme or reason. I hadn't used the laptop in a month, so I turned it on, it booted right into Windows and I started software updates. It rebooted without issue, then I went to reboot it a second time and this started happening. As far as I can tell, it's nothing more than a brick right now. Anyone have any suggestions? Things I've tried: Unplugging all accessories/keyboards/miceOpening it up and disconnecting the CMOS battery to try to clear the BIOSOpening it up and disconnecting the main battery to run it from the power adapterLetting the main battery run itself dry with no AC power adatperRemoving the SSDRemoving one stick of memoryAttaching an external monitor to HDMI to see if I'd get output thereDisplay output:What the screen shows as soon as it turns on. Hi, My Thinkpad display freezes with static horizontal lines a few minutes (even 15 later in some cases) after starting up and then goes black. I have to then manually restart the computer to get it to work, this doesn't work always and I have to repeat it a few times. I've updated software on Lenovo Vantage and used the Diagnostics tool to check individual components (display/motherboard/memory/storage/PCI express) but there are no errors.Laptop specifications are Windows 10 version 1909Intel UHD Graphics (24.20.100.6346)NVIDIA GeoForce GTX 1050 Ti with Max-Q Design (26.21.14.3194) I first suspected it was an issue with the graphics card and tried diabling one of them but that didn't solve the problem. The Intel graphics driver is out of date but even after updating it on Lenovo vantage the version number did not change. One thing I had added recently was an extra memory module (crucial 16gb DDR4-2666, identical in specifications to the one already installed). The laptop was working fine for a few days and the memory stick is recognized in the system information. I have now removed the new module to see if the issue persists. This is very frustrating since I had to send my laptop to the depot a couple of months ago for an issue where my laptop would not boot up after putting it to sleep. The Memory module and System Board w/ CPU were replaced in that case. Does anyone have ideas what the problem could be? I would rather not send m... Read more

I have a Thinkpad Extreme X1 second edition for about a month now (1TB SSD, 32 GB memory HD Screen and intel i9).I'm very happy with it but I have some questions.First of all the battery life, what are the settings to get the most out of it? Second question and this is in the header, all of a sudden my camera shows black and white video and photo.I don't know what happened but before I got the colors I expected.I'll atach imagesCamera_app_back_and_white.jpg: this a what the Windows builtin camera shows mePinnacle_studio_back_and_white.jpg: this is what I got when I tried to import video with pinnacle stdio 21 when using the builtin cameraI updated the drivers from lenovo, I updated the windows software (is now release 1909 and I did a scan of the hardware for the camera in control panel --> devices. Then I saw the output was a lot better in Pinnacle studio 21 but still in B&W,Pinnacle_studio_back_and_white_after_scan_for_harware_changes_in_devices.jpg The pictures are in the attached zip file.I found the next item, I tried Lenovo Y540 in daylight but the camera still shows black and white.According to that article the camera switches between color and B&W depending on the lightning condions.I guess there is noting wrong with the hardware, in that case I should see an image or no image but not color switching to b&w..I haven't found a setting for the camera to put it in b&w or in color. Anybody an idea?

Just received a new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 1 i7 8850 32gb ram, 4k, 1050, 1tb from amazon. I haven't been on windows since windows 7. Now, I switched back after using mac for 5 years. So, I turned the machine on, went through the annoying cortana process, and I installed windows updates. I let the battery fall to 10%. Then I put it on the charger so it can go to 100%, and I turned it off. I check back after a couple of hours, turn on the machine, the fans start up, the fingerprint sensor lights up, but there is no lenovo boot screen, there is no windows login. Simply, a black screen. The black screen never leaves. It's like the whole machine turns on but the screen is dead. Nothing better than a brand new machine acting like this.Has it happened to anyone else? Is there a solution? Should I return the laptop?

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Initially even after installing all the updates, the computer was running rather sluggish and slow compared to my previous 2 year old Asus Laptop, in terms of scrolling through webpages, pdf and responsiveness. Now I've reinstalled Windows 10, some of the sluggishness is gone but on Google Drive and Chrome I still find that it is slower compared to my previous laptop.  Do I have a defective unit? Does anyone else have the same problem?

Hello, last week on Friday I closed my laptop and went home, after opening the lid to start working, my laptop didn't boot up. So I force shutdown it (holding the power button for like 20 seconds), after pressing the power-on button, the laptop didn't boot up, instead it started going in a loop, the keyboard backlit started turning on and the fans started, but after 2-3 seconds it powered off automatically, and again powered on automatically with the same behaviour (keyboard backlit and the fans started turning on), this went on and on, until I pressed the button on the back of the laptop, now, when I turned on the laptop, it started w/o any problems. On Saturday when I wanted to wake up my laptop again, it didn't, this time I did the same as above, so forced shut it down, and pressed the power on button, but this time, it didn't turn on, even when I pressed the button on the back of the laptop, and the laptop still has the same behaviour as above. I opened the laptop and changed the RAM slots: nothing  has changedI opened and changed the hard drives, and even took one of them: nothing has changed The laptop doesn't even show the Lenovo sign when I power on the laptop. And I can't even access BIOS. And interestingly my guarantee ended one day before this happened (on Thursday!) Any help would be great. Thanks a lot

I purchased an X1 Extreme (4K) a few months ago. I have run into a few issues and was hoping I could get some advice. For reference, I have observed these issues across multiple different Windows versions, GeForce driver versions, and Lenovo BiOS versions. I am happy to answer any follow-up questions in the comments. 1.When I have hybrid graphics enabled, I have observed significant stutter when scrolling in applications such as Google Chrome, Spotify, and more, especially when opening PDFs in Chrome. Turning off hybrid graphics resolves fixes this, but I was wondering if there was another option I had other than compromising my battery life by disabling hybrid graphics.2.When I keep the TrackPoint enabled, it occasionally begins moving the cursor on its own and keeps going for a few seconds, with no apparent way to regain control until it stops. While I can fix this by just turning off the TrackPoint, I enjoy using it and would like to know if there is a different solution to this issue. Thank you in advance!

Hi I bought a X1 Extreme last week and it's driving me nuts already. The notebook simply does not charge. When I plug-in the power adapter, Windows says that the power supply is plugged-in. But the battery status doesn't change, in both ways (it's not charging but also not discharging). It just stays at the current charging status for hours. I also have Lenovo dockingstation "ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock 170W" and it's the same problem. After a research on the internet, I found the following article which actually helps, but only for a single charge. But as soon as I unplug the power supply again, I have to reboot again, turn of the battery in the BIOS and reconnect the power supply again. https://stebalien.com/blog/fix-for-lenovo-x1-carbon-not-charging/ The drivers are all up to date (installed via Lenovo System Update application). Does anybody suffer from this issue aswell? Thanks for your help!

I've have an X1 Extreme, for less than a month, and consistently had BSOD issues when or just shutdowns that seem to be revolving around the video drivers. I then upgraded my video drivers and now my secondary montior will not work. This is just awful. Wish Lenovo would actually make sure these laptops actually work before shipping them out. I've had over 50 BSOD in less than 30 days. Thoughts? Do I need to reinstalled and start fresh?

Hi all, It has been about a month since I received the new X1 Extreme, and it has been quite good so far, but today, for some unknown reason, I've run into some apparent battery issues. I charged my computer overnight yesterday, and when I tried using it in class today, it wouldn't start. The red light on the ThinkPad logo wasn't flashing at all, so something was off. I tried turning it on many times, but nothing happened.  When I came home, I plugged it in and it allowed me to turn it on, but it was stuck at 46% charge and wouldn't move (even after an hour - a period of time sufficient to charge the computer up to 80%). Then, as I was writing this post, a loud 2 bell ringing sound came on and the computer shut down. When I started it up again (connected to the AC adapter), the Lenovo Vantage battery icon displayed an "X" and the Windows battery appeared empty. I made sure to back up everything and updated BIOS and other drivers just in case, but nothing seemed to work. If I disconnect the AC adapter, the computer immediately dies. Like this, the computer is no longer useful to me since I need it on the go.  I'll contact Lenovo support once my schedule frees up a bit, but if this has happened before and you've found a solution, I'd like to get this back to normal as soon as possible. Thanks,  Reilly

Hi! I was wondering if I could get some help with a RAM upgrade question for my new thinkpad. I'm currently running on just a 8gb single channel config that shipped with the laptop (2666mhz cl19). If I add a Corsair Vengeance 2666mhz CL18 would the speeds still match up and work well (without crashing or going down to a lower speed)? Just to see what would happen I added the stick from my old acer laptop into the thinkpad, which was also running 8gb x 1 . Now my the thinkpad registers 16gb of ram in dual-channel, but at 2133mhz. The original stick in the thinkpad is at 2666 cl19 as before and the one from my old laptop is running at 2133 cl15, if I'm reading the cpu-z stats right. Should I ditch the old stick in favor of a new corsair? Do both sticks have to be exactly identical to work well with each other? How big of a performance boost is there between running dual-channel ram at 2133mhz vs 2666mhz? Enough of a boost to warrant the extra $40? I'm pretty new to this and I'd like to be able to save money wherever possible. Any hope would be appreciated. I'm gonna attach a few screenshots from cpu-z in hopes that it would help you all help me out. Thanks!

When I need to use it at about 11:30 AM, my computer is at around 10% and is very hot to the touch. It is so hot that one can receive a burn if held for too long. I don't think this is normal. A laptop should only lose a few percent over a couple of hours and shouldn't overheat if it isn't even running. - the computer claims that my wifi card isn't plugged in correctly. I did not want to tamper with the wires so I did a simple restart. The wifi seemed to work again, but after a few days I run into the same problem. Please help me out here.

I couldn't find any other topic about this so here we go:At first, my laptop fans went full speed every few minutes or so for like 5 seconds every time, that got fixed by a bios update. Now it is silent, always, and that's the problem right now, even if it is almost too hot to touch the fans won't speed up so it doesn't cool enough. I looked everywhere for a manual way to turn the fan speed higher (like MSI has on their laptops) but I couldn't find a way.My question: Can I fix this somehow, is there a setting I missed, is there anything at all I can do about this?
