Q: Very technical question may be difficult to answer

Hello you smart computer techies!!! I need a little assistance. I hate Norton as it was hogging up my PC. So I uinstalled it (via the norton uninstall) and went out and bought PC-cillin 2005. I installed it and everything was going fine until I attempted to connect to the internet (via IE). No internet. No email connection either (makes sense since IE and OE 6 are connected to each other. Aren't they?) Anywhoo, I uninstalled PC-cillin pdq, and viola Internet working just fine.

Called PC-cillin cust. spt. a very nice Hindu lady finally helped me disable the 'Personal Firewall' component of the new software after we reinstalled it. She assesed the problem is with my Internet provider. I was asked to call them and ask three specific questions 1. what port number am i using, 2. do they have a firewall up?, 3. any specific password or setting?

Internet provider was very perturbed at first with my three little questions insisting that the problem is with PC-cillin software not with them (the service provider). they answered my questions though, --, no, no.

I just sent an email to cust spt @ PC-cillin with the same info presented here.

but since you guys are almost always quicker, and there is no need to decipher the accent, I thought I'd try TechSupportGuy too.

I have a limited knowledge of computers, even less it seems when it comes to software conflicts. But my guess's at the problem is this, : 1. norton is not TOTALLY off my pc, or 2. I'm running another firewall somehow.

of those two guess I don't have a clue how to figure out if its true and secondly how to fix it.

anybody of for a challenge today?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the laptop manufacturer supplies a Windows 8 driver for that card for your model laptop it should work fine. Otherwise, unless you find somebody who has tried you'll have to try it to know. The computer may refuse to boot with the "foreign" device, may boot but the card will not work at all, or maybe it will work with the driver from Intel's site or someplace else.

Hi,

I've been searching for a software program that can view the data on my second (and encrypted) HD from outside of Windows (Boot CD, DOS, Linux, anything) or even while booted into Windows. The purpose for viewing the data is because I would like to see how well I have encrypted my second HD. If my second HD is encrypted as well as I think it is, then I should not be able to see folder names or file names when I view the data on the HD from a utility either in or outside of Windows.

In other words, what utility can I use to view data on an encrypted HD. It doesn't matter if the data shows as "dfusdf9set8w4twuiefasidft4" (In an encrypted format), I still would like to view the data either way to see how well the data on the second HD is encrypted.

None of the popular utilities that I have tried can accomplish this very simple task. Does anybody know of a utility that can?

(I'm trying to figure out how well the "Encrypted Installation" of a Ubuntu Linux OS works. I don't think that the data shows up as encrypted if you use a utility to view the data, even when the system isn't mounted. The answer to this question is driving me mad, and I'm not going to know for sure how well the encrypted installation works until I actually view the data. I know this is a Windows 7 Forum (I use Windows 7 as my primary OS) but the program is probably a popular Windows or DOS program, so I came here to ask.)

Does anyone know a way or if it is even possible to have a column of numbers and find X amount of those numbers that sum to a given total.
For example:
Say you have a list of 2, 4, 5, 9, 10
Is it possible for excel to find which of those numbers sums to 18
Is there a way to make excel find 4, 5, and 9 (totaling 18) but exclude summing the 2 and 10 cause they don’t help add up to the 18?

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Hi, here what is happening ... in our MSN group I am one of the managers. When I post on the message board I often use graphics inserted from my hard drive.

Last few days I do the same as I have been doing for years, and when I click Send Message I get a nasty error message like "Hmmm... we can't find the page you are looking for. Refresh" ... etc ... When I click F5 to reload the page it does the same. Meanwhile on the message board it says "Message was deleted by the author".

Are any of you familiar with the MSN groups? As for the disk space I have plenty: I have 30 mb to use, and used up only 5.8 mb.

Any help or tip would be greatly appreciated

Hey, I have a few questions regarding formatting my Acer 3000 C100 Laptop.
First off, its about three or four years old now, and has been in heavy rotation between five family members, and has accumulated numerous viruses and the HDD has filled up to the point that the computer is pretty much useless.
Also, I would like to say that before posting, I have searched online as much as I could to gain information about reformatting, but a few questions still remain.
I could not find clarification between "Product Key" and "CD Key" and I was wondering if there was a difference. One of the articles on this site regarding reformatting advised downloading "Keyfinder" if the CD Key or Product Key wasn't known, and it gave me a code. Then, another post on this site said that keys were usually located on the bottom of the laptop, and I located mine. It was quite different from what the Keyfinder gave me. It was labelled as "Product Key"
What I would like to know is, which one of these numbers do I need to acompany the reformatting disk which will enable me to reformat, and what course of action should I take in the event that I cannot find any of my disks?
(I dont think I will, I've been searching for days, and this computer has been with us through several house moves, I don't think I will find them.)
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

A:Reformatting question - difficult situation

Good questions.. While product key, CD key (and activation key) are sometimes used interchangeably they all refer to the "key" required for paid products in order for you to use them. So you need to review the paid Windows and other vendor products you paid to use as they will all likely require a key. THEn you can figure out how to find keys by product.

If it might also help, here's a checklist to help smooth the reinstall process

Make sure you have your Windows install CDs
Review Add/Remove Programs. Make sure you have activiation codes for any purchased software.
> You can recover your Windows product IDs from your current installation using Magic Jelly Bean tool
Note programs you need to reinstall. Check if they're available for download online or you still have their download CDs
Backup all your personal files/folders
Use DriverMax to backup all your drivers (so they are available if needed after the reinstall)
Reformat and reinstall.

A:Technical Question

The only hardware upgrade that you can usually make to a laptop is to add more RAM - if it supports adding more.

From what I've read so far, that model laptop comes with the AMD Sempron 3600+ 2.00 GHz processor and supports up to 4 GB of DDR2 PC2-6400(DDR2-800) RAM.

While surfing , does it mean anything if it's difficult to to back to a previous page? Sometimes it doesn't bo backwards and I restart what I was doing.

Ex: google search

Then going to a link, then want to go back and it doesn't after repeated back arrow clicking
Thanks

A:IE 8 question- going to previous page difficult at times

The need to use the 'back' arrow in your web browser is much less frequent now we have tabbed browsing.
Instead of double-clicking a link in Google Search or anywhere else, right-click the link and choose "Open in a new tab".

Then when you want to go back to Google Search or wherever you were, you only need to click the previous tab.

A while back, I asked a DSL provider about the distance betwween my house and the nearest DSL central office, which is about 6 miles away. Here's the partial response I got:

If the form says you qualify then you should be no more than 18,000 feet from the central office in your area. However, that is 18,000 feet in actual line length, not in walking or driving distance from the CO.Click to expand...

Question #1: How many miles is 18,000 feet? I'm sure it's less than 6 miles.
Question #2: Why are the DSL cables so short?

Today, I ordered it anyway from my phone company, and a technician is coming later this week to install it for me.

After it's all hooked up, if it doesn't connect, I'll have to cancel the whole shebang.

I really hope it works cuz I'm getting fed up with this dialup connection on these very crappy voice-grade phone lines.

I have a client who needs BOTH some PHP and some SSI code in a webpage. The filetype needs to remain as SHTML. I tried making an SHTML page that included PHP, but what happens when I modify the .htaccess file is that one or the other gets done, but not both.

For example, I used this in the .htaccess:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .shtml
AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .shtml
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.php index.html

That does the PHP coding just fine in the shtml file, but not the
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/Tracking/ax.cgi" --> SSI code
line in the shtml page.

When I switch the first two lines, it does the SSI, but not the PHP.

How can I get it to do both the SSI *and* the PHP?

I am using a program (which I didn't write) which creates a database driven website. It was working well, but suddenly, when I try to add new records, I get errors. I have the system on a WIN2000 server, and also mirrored on my WIN98 system at home.

On the WIN2000 server, I get this error message: "ERROR: Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done."

On the WIN98 system, I get this error: "Errors Occurred"

In both cases, the record does get added, but it cannot be edited - only deleted.

Since I couldn't reach the guy who wrote the program I was using, I did some research, and found this page over at Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q228/9/35.asp

It described this error exactly. It said I needed to upgrade my MDAC and JET versions to make these errors go away. I don't really know what MDAC and JET are, but I found them for download on Microsoft's site.

Using my WIN98 system as the guinea pig, I downloaded and installed MDAC 2.6 and JET 4.0 - the most recent versions of both. Needless to say, it didn't fix the problem.

The only thing that changed on my WIN98 system is that instead of getting the "Errors Occurred" message, I now get the much longer error message that my server returns.

I haven't tried upgrading the server because - well - I'm afraid to touch the server, especially when the fix didn't work on... Read more

I bought a new Compaq Presario laptop, and the specs say it has 256mb of PC2100, (266MHZ) DDR-SDRAM, with a max capacity of 1G. So I went out and bought 1G (2-512mb modules, same specs). When I opened up the memory compartment and removed the memory the laptop came with, it was marked 256mb, DDR, 333 mhz, PC 2700.

My questions:

Are the two types of memory interchangeable?
Can using PC 2700 333 mhz harm the computer if it is meant to run PC2100, 266 mhz?
If I use the PC2100, 266mhz, will my computer run slower?
What should I do?

Thanks.

Greetings, helpful and wonderful people.

I currently have a 2x2gb setup in 2 of my 4 DIMM slots on my motherboard. The timing is 8-8-8-24. The speed is DDR3 @ 1600MHz, and it is a matched pair. They run at 1.65V,

I am looking to expand this memory, but the pair I have picked out to add to the second bank (the remaining two DIMM slots) has differences in the size, voltage and timing. I have tried my best to research this problem before creating a thread but haven't found an answer detailed enough to explain why this would or would not work. Anyways, here are the details on the second pair.

2x4gb, same brand (Crucial). Timing 10-10-10-28. Speed DDR3 @ 1600MHz, matched pair. Running at 1.5V.

The three differences are the size (4gb vs 2gb per module), the timing (CAS latency 10 vs CAS latency 8), and the voltage (1.5V vs 1.65V).

The motherboard can handle all the specs of the possible new pair. Crucial's website confirms compatibility by suggesting this pair with its scan utility.

HOWEVER, my question is: What will happen in my BIOS configuration when I put this new pair in the second bank?
1. What will Dual-Channel, what will not, and why?
2. Will I have to manually reduce the latency of the second pair, or will I have to manually increase the latency of the first pair, in order to make them match? Will this result in a major speed decrease?
3. Will the difference in voltage be modified automatically? To which? (1.65v or 1.5v?)
4. Is it actually worth it to kee... Read more

When I go to my BIOS, I see two hard drives: P0 and P2.
Let's call them as Disk1 and Disk2.

Regularly, I am booting from Disk2.
(By the way, one of the disks is dedicated to operating systems, and the other is dedicated to libraries. I don't know which one is which, since they are identical drives, but as I said regularly I am booting from Disk2).

When I have a boot problem such as "Insert correct media device", I am putting the system repair disc, and (after booting the system repair disc from cd/dvd drive) it gives me the error that "this repair disc is not compatible with your version".
But, when I change the first drive from Disk2 to Disk1 in BIOS, it doesn't give that error and shows me the system repair options.

What does this mean?
Why it is happening like that?
Does it mean that if I remove Disk1 physically or disable it, I can never use any system repair disc?
How can I solve this problem?
What are my options if a system repair disc gives me the "not compatible" error?

A:Technical Boot Question (2 Disks)

It sounds like your boot files are on disk 1, P0, and your OS is on disk 2, P2. You need to have a look in disk management to see whats what. If that is true, you won't be able to boot up to your OS if you remove disk 1.

A:1 Answer Question

Your overall read speeds are determined by the hd RPM's (determins how fast the hd can send out data), and seek times (Determins how fast the hd can find a file). I'm guessing that your second hd is slower than the first, and that is why the load times are longer on that drive. I use the same setup, but my first drive is the slow one. Windows is slow to boot, but games load quickly. If the drives are equal, you should not notice any real difference between the two.

Now, navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Valve -> Half-Life (Or CounterStrike if you have the retail version) -> Settings, and there should be a key on the right window called 'Key', with a bunch of numbers to the right. Those numbers are your CD-key.

I just purchased a internal Kangaroo drive or you could call it a docking station. I disconntcted the ribbon cable that was plugged into my IDE socket to my master hard drive and set that aside. Now I took the current cable from the docking station , plugged into my hard drive then plugged that back into the IDE socket. I set the switches to make the Kangaroo a slave, turned my computer off and plugged my Kangaroo hard drive into the docking station. I then used Norton Ghost and made a image of my hard drive onto the Kangaroo hard drive. I am using Windows XP Home and I can clearly see a copy of the image on the Kangaroo drive. The purpose of being able to do this was to save an image of my hard drive and be able to remove the Kangaroo drive. Well up to this point everything works, but now I've tried to disconnect the master drive and have taken it out of the picture and directly plugged the Kangaroo drive into the IDE socket, before this was done I set the dip switches to make the Kangaroo the master drive. And here is my problem, when I boot the system up I get a message that says (NTLDR is missing) this hard drive should be bootable. Can anyone give my some insight into what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Chip

what is the difference between stand by and hibernate??? what do they do? what are there differences and are they of any use? will one of the reducue electricity usage??

A:Please answer this question.

Hibernation loads memory to a file and shuts down the machine. Stand-by is sleep and can be at different levels including Vista's hybrid sleep, but the thing they have in common is that they use a small amount of power to keep memory alive. Machines come back from standby very quickly.

If there is a power failure during hibernation, since no power is being used, no problems result. Power outages during sleep are like a hard shutdown.

What is the difference between bus and frequency...?
How can i know the bus and frequency of my Ram...?
And when you buy a Ram ( 1024MB 400 ), dose the ( 400 ) stand for the bus or the frequency ?
Thanx......

A:Ram question..please answer..

A bus is a wide data path between two or more electronics components.
"How can I know the bus of my RAM" is a nonsense question. Maybe you want to know about the difference between the bus frequency/speed and the RAM frequency/speed?

Your RAM does operate at the same frequency as its bus, so when someone refers to their RAM speed of 400MHz, then that is also the maximum bus speed that this RAM supports.

Got any suggestions on what could be wrong with my memory card when it won't read the data when it's plugged in?
It says "No Data"
The card is official. I've tried other slots. Other mem cards work, tried turning it off and on, etc. We have a hunch that the problem could be that the contacts on the memory card have been misalligned, however there is no damage we can see without taking it apart.
Is it possible to take it apart or are there rivets or anything in the back end of the memory card that would hold it together?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

A:Question regarding PS2 Memory Card technical difficulties

Try it and see, get a screwdriver, and see if you can pry the case open. I have no idea if it will work, but if it doesn't work, then you've got nothing to lose by trying to get it open.

Hi there,

I have a question about the "amvo virus" and Combofix...

My goal is to REMOVE this virus and then PREVENT my PC from being infected another time by the same virus...Does ComboFix just remove "amvo" or fixes the problem, protecting my PC "forever" against this virusc ???

If it doesn't, can anyone tell me a good practice for preventing this infection in future? (possibly, something more sophisticated than just disabling the execution of the autorun.ini in every external drive...)

Thanks a lot guys...

A:Technical Question about ComboFix and the AMVO malware

amvo.exe) is a backdoor Trojan that is installed with other malicious files. Backdoor Trojans, IRCBots and Infostealers are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans as part of an exploit to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge. Read Danger: Remote Access Trojans. If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, you should immediately disconnect from the Internet until your system is cleaned. All passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. You should change each password by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. If using a router, you need to reset it with a strong logon/password so the malware cannot gain control before connect again. Question

I just wanted to know if anyone knows a website, or book that I could learn all of the "Computer Lingo" like what is FSB, or a multiplier of 13 = clockspeed. I know somewhat about computers, but in depth I really don't know anything. I love to come to this forum for advice, but I hate not knowing anything at all. I'd rather read up on this stuff instead of constantly asking for help this is to help me so I won't be completley lost; Trying to overclock my computer, or making my computer run very smoothly. Please help.

Summary:
I am seeking a Graphics Application that Can Make "Special" JPEG files (for .epub ebooks).

Hello and thanks in advance.

I have been learning how to make ebooks in the new .epub format.

I have only one step to go in order to complete the ebook: I need to create a cover image that will work in the desktop ebook reader, Stanza. I have tried and failed to make JPEG files that work, using Photoshop (on boot-camp the Windows side of a Mac) and the (Mac) shareware products Acorn and ImageWell. These make JPEGS of course, but the JPEGS do not work in the ebook reading software.

There are sample .epub ebooks available for people like me, learning how to make the books. I took a jpeg from one of those samples, and inserted it into my ebook -- and it worked perfectly. So there are some jpegs that work, and others that do not.

I need to find a graphics editor (for Mac or Windows) that can make the jpegs that work. Or, an application that can save my jpegs (that don't work) into another kind of jpeg that does work.

I have made a zipped file, and sent it to Box.net, containing 5 jpeg files. Some work and some do not. If anyone has the interest to investigate further, they can download the files and look.

Here is the download link (I promise there is nothing harmful in this zipped file: just the jpegs):

I bought a couple cases for some new pc's. turns out they labeled them wrong and they are for Micro ATX not standard, ive never used micro before.

So i can send them back or i can just get Micro mobo's instead.

Some1 please give me the Pro's and Con's of having a Micro ATX board over having a Standard ATX board?

A:Micro ATX Question.. Please Answer

Well obviously the mobo's are smaller but in length/height only.
This tends to reduce the amount of extra pci slots, usually two.
This is not really a big deal as most micro atx boards suit the needs of most people.

My boss is a bit of....penny pincher.

When I first came on board, he had paid thousands to a company to put a cut & paste website template and host it for him. It was horrible. I convinced him to let me build one for him and host it through my own company cheap. ($25 a month)

Now, Mr Miser believes all those fly-by-night hosting outfits that can host his site for $35 a year, etc and thinks he's being ripped off again. And, to make matters worse, he wants to know why he can't just host the site himself here at the office using our own server.

I tried to explain about DNS and software needed and a good isp (maybe even a T-1 line) but I am not that schooled up on this stuff.

I tried looking for some info on google, but I only can get hits for pitches on people trying to get you to use their web hosting.

Anyone have any good links to info I can use? He can't be right, can he...?

I have a HP Pavillion 6500 laptop, Windows Vista Home Premium 32, Service pack 1, 900 ram, 1.8 GHz, etcetera.

On the official HP website, there's an update for the graphics drivers that I have on my computer. When I download the package and install it, everything seems to work fine... but for some reason, whenever I play something in Windows Media Player, like a FLV file (from Youtube), the computer goes Blue Screen on me... I'm not sure why

At first I wasn't sure why it was doing that... until I finally noticed that for the fourth time, it BSOD'ed on me when WMP was open. I uninstalled the Codec Pack and had Vista automatically install updates, and everything was fine after that, no BSOD or anything.

Could it be my codec pack? I had VistaCodecs installed when I installed it, but now I am using K-Lite Codec Pack. Does anyone know the problem? I'm pretty sure that I downloaded the right thing... though when I put my brand of laptop into the HP search thing, it gives me five different options...
-DV6500 CTO
-DV6500 er
-Dv6500 ew
-Dv6500 t CTO
-DV6500 z CTO
My computer only says "DV6500", that's it... nowhere, anywhere does it say CTO, er, ew, etc. Plus, the odd thing is, the system specs say I have a "DV6500", but the sticker above the screen says "Pavilion Dv6000".

I'm quite the muddled mess, aren't I?

So, my question is, does anyone know why it goes BSOD on me whenever I played something in WMP, and ... Read more

If I have a DSL router connected to my modem which is then hardwired to my desktop, will I be able to use the printer connected to my desktop via my wireless laptop? Hope this is clear enough and you understand what I mean. Thanks.

A:Easy answer question

If your router has wireless capability and if you set up the desktop for file and printer sharing and then set the printer to share, Yes . . you should be able to print from the laptop. Run the Add Printer wizard on the laptop once you have shared the printer, check Network Printer and follow the yellow brick road . .

But it's worth a shot.

I have a Dell Latitude CPI-A series, and for the longest time, it's been working fine. Just the other day, I purchased this thingy that allows my computer to access the internet via wireless routers. When installing it, it said that it may not be safe for Windows XP, but I ignored it because the box clearly said "Compatible for WinXP".

After about a month now, my computer has been acting up. I don't think it has anything to do wit the above, but I'm not ruling it out. Lately, the computer has been acting very slowly. It used to take me a few minutes for my computer to start up... now, for it to function at it's correct efficienty, it takes roughly about 10-20 minutes for it to stop making weird sounds so I can do things. The hard drive (6 gig) makes a funny sound, like a cackling noise, when it takes that long period of time. I believe that people I've talked to said that if it makes that noise, it means the hard drive is going bad. I bought it used off of Ebay.

So, does anyone think they know the answer to my problem? I'm guessing...

A- That router thingy did damage windows (but I reinstalled Windows, and nothing changed)

B- The Hard drive is starting to go bad, since that cackling noise is starting to be heard more...

C- The Internet has caused my computer to do something, since after I connected to the Internet is when most of these problems started to happen

D- The computer hates me...
