Complicated zipping requirement

Q: Complicated zipping requirement

hi all,

I'm looking to constantly created updated zip files which need to pull files from one folder containing several thousand png files.

The key here is that I can predefine what files need to go to what zip file from an Excel list, but I don't know of a way to allocate accordingly, other than doing it manually, which isn't going to happen!

Im0001.png through to Im1000.png in the folder, and they need to be split to 4 separate archives. There's no sequence to the split, it's based on what country that image belongs to.

I'm looking at Pacquet Builder atm but I'm not sure it's got the functionality I'm looking for.

Hope I'm kinda making sense, any help would be very very appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Complicated zipping requirement

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone, I am trying to find a way to zip files (photos) using windows 7 and then send them in Gmail. I also need to know how to unzip them on a system using windows xp. Thank You!

A:zipping files

Hi sst1226,

Extracting in Windows 7

Locate the file or folder that you want to compress.

Right-click the file or folder, point to Send To, and then click Compressed (zipped) Folder.

A new compressed folder is created. To rename it, right-click the folder, click Rename, and then type the new name.

Unzipping in Windows XP

1. Open My Computer, and then locate the compressed folder.
2. Do one of the following:

To extract a single file or folder, double-click the compressed folder to open it. Then, drag the file or folder from the compressed folder to a new location.

To extract all files or folders, right-click the compressed folder, and then click Extract All. In the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard, specify where you want to store the extracted files.

My OS is Windows XP Home

I'm still a little lost when it comes to zipping files and moving them to a CD-R, being a novice to the process.

I have WinZip and recently downloaded FreeZip and what I am trying to do is free up space on my HD by zipping and then moving the zipped file to a CD-R.

The biggest problem I am having is this....I can create a zip folder containing the files I want and I can move it to the CD-R but it seems to want to "copy" all the files in the originating folder when I only want the files that I zipped (new Zip Folder) to then move to the CD. What am I not doing correctly? It's as if I'm creating a "backup" zip file which is not want I want to do in this case, I want to remove the files from my computer and be able to see them at a later time.

The only solution I find so far is to create the Zip folder, move it to the CD, and then go back to the originating folder and proceed to delete the "copied" files that are left behind. Seems like a step that could be eliminated with a little knowledge.

Also, and I think this is probably important, when I click on "Properties" on a folder I want to Zip the box next to "Read Only" is checked. What about this attribute? Should I uncheck it or is this ok for zipping and unzipping?

A little help and some advice on how to zip files properly would be greatly appreciated.

I am having problems with Win7. I can open .zip-files, but I cannot create them obviously. I have tried both WinRar and WinZip and the problem remains. This is the error message I get when trying to .zip files in Winrar... A similar message pops up in WinZip.

It just says access denied, which leads me to believe that this has to do with Windows' fascist and useless security settings which I do not need since I am the only one using this machine and which are also hidden away so noone can find them. Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

I'm using the following code to zip files from foxpro using powerarchiver as my zipper, I'm having problems with any paths that have spaces even though I am trying to pass quoted paths, any ideas?

parameters filetozip,ziptoname,zippassword

filetozip = '"'+filetozip+'"'
ziptoname = '"'+ziptoname+'"'
if zippassword != ""
zippassword = '-s"'+zippassword+'"' && putting the -s part in here stops it failing when no password is passed.
run C:\PACL\PACOMP -a -c2 -w -q &zippassword &ziptoname &filetozip

it works fine as long as there are no spaces in the paths passed but this is not good enough for my needs.

I have a VERY old version of WINRAR and an equally ancient version of WINZIP (I think its 8.1!) and I need something to do a ONE-TIME zip up of some records to put on a DVD. The combined files are 46.8GB and I could go to two DVD's but was wondering if I could find a free (it IS a one-time thing, after all, and I'm retired) program which would do this all onto one DVD.
Just a philosophical thing... two DVD's are not gonna kill me and I don't grudge the time, but the question still remains: Is there something that might ZIP things to one DVD? (The last time I tried it all-at-once, I got a 4.75GB compressed file.)
Well... (Hi, Broni!) I'll crawl back in my own little hole and see if anyone trips the triggerwire.

A:A Zipping question

You can try using Winrar and then under options select solid archive. I would also put in a recovery record but this will add a little to the archive size. It that does not work, I would just go for two DVD's. It's just my preference but I would rather have two DVD's than one maxed out.
There is a freeware archiver called 7-zip. This archiver can create an archive smaller than Winrar but you have to use the 7z protocol and maximum compression to achieve the results.

It is my understanding that a *.jpg file loses a fraction of its resolution each time it is copied, due to its compression processing algorithm -- (correct me if I'm wrong).
Suppose instead that the .jpg file, (or a document containing .jpgs) is zipped with an archival program, (for example, WinRAR).
My question: Is the .jpg resolution similarly degraded during the zipping/unzipping process ? Or is this a "lossless" process ? Or is it program-dependent?
Thank you very much for your thoughts.

A:*.jpg file degradation due to zipping ?

If there is any degradation, I'd say it's negligible (if you don't choose some crazy compression that is), however this is a very interesting subject. WinRar and normal zipping won't do anything

There have been times in the past when a zip file I created was corrupt (or became corrupt somehow). I encountered this either using WinZip or command-line zip, possibly in old Unix environments. To me, there is a risk in relying solely on zip archives and deleting the original unzipped files. The risk isn't only in losing one file that is corrupt -- any corruption anywhere in the entire archive could render all the files therein inaccessible. Hence, the risk increases with the size of the archive.

How reliable is the zip that is native to Windows 7? In addition to that general question, what about specifically for files in the Gigabyte range (fraction of a GB or several GBs)? If it is very reliable, then I will use the Windows 7's "compressed (zipped) folder" to create archives for writing to DVD.

I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I want to avoid discussion about Windows 7 backup as it is not suitable for my specific purposes.

My laptop was being extremely sluggish, freezing up constantly, requiring boottime repairs occasionally, and taking forever to unzip files. I thought it was a software issue, and so I did a clean install of Vista. Didn't solve the problems. First of all it took 2-3 times as long to install Vista as it has in the past, when I've previously done clean installs. And the laptop is still super sluggish and freezes up constantly. Still takes forever to download from the internet and zipping/unzipping files takes forever, too.

I figure it's a hardware issue.

I ran the Hitachi Fitness Test for my hard drive, but the utility couldn't find my hard drive.

Is there any other way to test if my hard drive is defective?

Below are my laptop specs and the report from Everest. It says that the PCI and VideoBios needs to be debugged. Could those two things be the problem. I ran the Everest report before the clean install and it said the same thing.

I would really appreciate some help here.

A:Laptop sluggish, freezing and zipping issues

I have the same problem as these people:

But most of them say unistalling antivirus software did the trick. I don't have any antivirus software installed, and I just completed a clean installation of my OS.

About two weeks ago my laptop fan broke, so in the meantime I've been using a usb fan to keep the laptop cool. My troubles started around that time so I'm thinking maybe the laptop usb fan has maybe messed up the electrical circuitry.

I don't know. I will be getting a new laptop fan in a week. Hopefully the usb fan is the culprit.

Hello forum users,
I am having a problem using the 'Send to>Compressed (zipped) folder' option. The problem is identical to the issue discussed in this thread:

missing file when zipping or compressing folder

Long story short, in the resulting compressed folder I lose the file that I right-click on to compress the files.

I'm using Windows 7's default built-in file compression. It is apparent that third-party compressing solutions are often preferred to this method, but I'm looking for a solution to this specific problem. Any help with this would be much appreciated, thanks.

A:Revisit: Windows 7 missing file when zipping or compressing folder

After some review, here are some more details on my problem:

-there are about 200-400 small files (1-10KB average) that I'm trying to compress.

-this problem doesn't occur on my local C:, however it occurs on all mapped drives.

-after comparing the zipfldr.dll file on another workstation that doesn't have this issue, I found no differences in properties.

-the regedit entries for zipfold also appear identical to the entries on the workstation without the issue.

A short answer no. ATI says a min of 450W with at least 30amp on the 12V rail for that card. It looks like you are running a prescott cpu. If that is correct, then I would go with a min of 550W and 35amp on the 12V rail.

Do not go cheap on the pw supply. Doing so can [and often does] cause ALL types of problems.

What are the min requirement to install win2k on a PC?

A:Win2K Requirement

These are the minimum system requirements that are listed on Microsoft's Website.
Your computer should meet the following hardware requirements: • 133 MHz or faster Pentium-compatible CPU
• 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM minimum; more memory generally improves responsiveness (4 gigabytes [GB] RAM maximum)
• 2 GB hard disk space with a minimum of 650 MB of free space (additional free hard disk space is required if you are installing over a network) Click to expand...

Can't say I would try and run Windows 2000 that way. I would go with a minimum of 256mb of ram. And it doesn't run to fast on a Pentium 133. I have Windows 2000 running on a Pentium II 400mhz with 192mb of ram. It runs most office applications just fine. I actually run Office 2003 on it.

Hi everybody,

For the last several days, I've been doing a lot of research about whether my power supply can support my graphics card, but I can't seem to find a definate answer. What I have is a 450 watt power supply; it has one single 12v rail that provides 24 amps. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon X1950 Pro PCI-E. It requires a 450 watt power supply and recommends 30 amps on the 12v rail.

When I asked whether my PSU can support my graphics card on other forums, some people tell me it can, but others tell me it can't, so I'm really confused right now. I had my X1950 hooked up and running for 3 days without having any problem, but I took it out today, just to be safe until I can get a definate answer. Although I do notice that my power supply runs cooler without the X1950 hooked up.

But on other forums, I even heard people run this card on a 18 amp 12v rail without any problem and they even have it running on a fully loaded system with 2x HDD, 2x DVD Drive, cooling system, fans and lights. And many people say that 22 amps should be the minimum to this card and 24 amps should be fine. However, there are also people who say that you should follow the manufacturers recommendation and get a minimum 30 amps power supply.

If you encrypt a computer with BitLocker and chose to set a PIN, is there any way to later retract the pre-boot PIN requirement and revert back to the scenario above without first decrypting and re-encrypting?
I've looked at the various options via manage-bde and tested a few such as:

manage-bde -protectors -add C: -tpm. This will reconfigure BitLocker into using just the TPM and delete the PIN as well.
If you run manage-bde -status and look under Key Protectors you should see Numerical Password (ie the recovery key) and either TPM on a system that does not use a PIN, or TPM And PIN on a system that does. If you try to remove the PIN by just removing the
TPM and PIN key protector the only means of unlocking the drive available is Numerical Password, causing you to be prompted for the recovery key at every boot. You have to specifically tell BitLocker to use just the TPM instead, it wont automatically default
to this setting.

when it comes to power usage im not that up to date i currently have a 250watt power supply that came with a plain jane case , im running a pentium duo core 3.0ghz processor 2 gigs of ram and a 256meg nvidia video card i saw a new case at best buy that came with a 500watt power supply how do i know if that kind of power would be right for what im running, would to much power blow my motherboard ? i was highly advised to up my power supply a friend was amazed my computer was running to begin with.

A:Power requirement question

Power supply problems relate mainly to video graphics. I suggest you get a quality power supply from the list of power supplies on this forum you can find with a search. Certainly 400 or 500 watts is a good choice, if it has steady output.

I'm trying to install SP1 for Windows 7, the beta, and it says I need 9 gig free to install. I only have 6. Is there a way to bypass this at all?

A:How to get around space requirement on SP install?

Actually you could move some files and folders to another place to free up hard drive space. If you don't have a spare hard drive you can use DVD/CD, thumb drive, or an external drive.

Other than that, no you can't get around the space requirements. I would also say that if you're that low on space, perhaps it's time to upgrade to a bigger hard drive.
