Q: Driver Problem, CHDSK Problem, Recommendations Needed

Few questions...
I have an MSI FX420 running Windows 7 Pro SP1 32-bit
1. Seems like my built-in webcam isn't functioning even if I try to turn it on via Fn+F6 (the hotkey). There's also a bunch of drivers that seem to be missing in Device Manager.
Where can I go to make sure I have the latest drivers? People say not to use a 3rd party Driver Updater tool. I've been using Auslogics Driver Updater simply because I am a fan of their products (I use Boost Speed and Disk Defrag).
2. chkdsk won't work. scannow /sfc found some corrupt files but whenever I try and reboot doing both chkdsk/f and chkdsk /f AND chdskdsk /f /r, it always tells me the disk checking has been cancelled. Not sure what to do. I tried going into safe mode with command prompt but it told me the drive was locked and was in use. Recovery console didn't work (Bitdefender has its own recovery mode)...the command terminal it provides doesn't even recognize the chkdsk command.
3. What do you guys recommend for cleaning and optimization? I have CCleaner and Auslogics Boostspeed. CCleaner seems like a small tool that cleans thoroughly and has great reviews and uses very little memory in the background while it actively monitors your system (though I'm not exactly sure what it monitors). Boostspeed has some nifty tools that claims to smooth out your system but uses a lot of memory in the background (Driver Upater also uses up a lot of memory).
4. is there a speed tool for windows startup? There are lots of 3rd party tools that tests a website's loading speed and tells you what scripts/files load up how fast/slow in which order, but curious to know if there is a speed test for a computer that tells you which programs launch in which order and what speed?
5. Lastly, what do you guys recommend for disk defrag? Auslogics disk defrag (free) or Piriform's Defraggler? Lotta different opinions out there.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Open the Device Manager and make a screenshot of it and post it in your topic.
How to make a screenshot
1. Download and run A Thousand Words .
2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot
3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.
4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.
You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.
Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options.

When you click on More Relpy Options you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you want to post, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.
As for chkdsk, you should just use the /r switch since is has the same functionality as /f, but the /r switch also searches sectors that are bad and recovers readable data. When you enter the chkskd /r in the Command Prompt you will receive the following message.
"CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>".
Press the Y key and restart the computer, the scan will begin when the computer is restarted.
Except for hardware driver, such as a printer, you should download your drivers from the manufacturer of your computer. These are the best drivers for that computer. For this reason I agree that you should not use third party tool which indiscriminately select drivers for your computer.
As for program that optimize the operating system and registry cleaners. Just so you are aware, CCleaner has an optional tool which is a registry cleaner. I would suggest not using it. The explanation below will make it clear as to why you don't want to use these tools.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
Why you should not use Registry Cleaners and Optimization Tools
There are numerous programs which purport to improve system performance, make repairs and tune up a computer. Many of them include such features as a registry cleaner, registry optimizer, disk optimizer, etc. Some of these programs even incorporate optimization and registry cleaning features alongside anti-malware capabilities. These registry cleaners and optimizers claim to speed up your computer by finding and removing orphaned and corrupt registry entries that are responsible for slowing down system performance. There is no statistical evidence to back such claims. Advertisements to do so are borderline scams intended to goad users into using an unnecessary and potential dangerous product.
Credit for this goes to Quietman7, one of our Global Moderators.
I have a preference for the Auslogic defrager, but that's a personal choice.

1.Know your products name and search for drivers manually.
Don't use any third-party driver updating software. It's bloatware.

2.I would suggest to back your data and reinstall Windows.

3.Cleaning and optimization:
-CCleaner (disabled monitoring,I don't need that)
-Disk cleanup
-Disk defragment

4.I heard for Bootracer, but I've never used it and I don't know will it suit your needs.

5.I used MyDefrag and I was quite satisfied.I suggest it.
Additionally,Windows disk defragment does pretty fine job also.

I need some advice on the best way to approach a data recovery operation.

The HD in question is my boot drive, Windows XP, 1 TB.

A few days ago I rebooted my computer and came back to see CHDSK had auto started it ran for a few hours, I left it unattended most of the time, but from what I saw it was reporting/fixing a lot of bad sectors, deleting corrupt attribute records and deleting index entries. There was a LOT of activity.

Please don't ask if I have a recent backup... answering that question will only cause me a great deal of embarrassment and self-loathing

On completion it rebooted to the Windows login screen, after logging in I got a windows explorer error message and my desktop was blank and the only thing it was possible to do was open Task Manager (couldn't even open the Start menu). I rebooted into Safe Mode, got the windows explorer error again. I rebooted again and tried starting up using Last Known Good Configuration but this triggered CHDSK again after which it was no longer possible to boot to the Windows Login screen, I get a Blue Screen registry error. I tried using the Win XP disc to attempt a repair installation but this too gave a registry error.

At this point I realised (probably later than I should) that I was doing more harm than good and stopped, the computer has been off since then.

So now I am in data recovery mode and want to make sure I have as much info as possible before doing anything! Priority 1 is to recover as many files as ... Read more

UBUNTU Stand Alone CD

NOTE : version Ubuntu 12.04

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least possibly get data off.

If you have another PC with a cdwriter and spare CD
goto http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick

full details are here (Note this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different )

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC – remember where you saved it – so you can find it again to create the image bootable CD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a CD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable CD
The CD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO
If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/ - Choose the option Write image file to disc
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto CD ftp://terabyteunlimited.com/burncdcc.zip

When the UBUNTU CD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

So, I'm working on a HP Pavilion zx5060us that is not producing any sound from the speakers. The PC speaker appears to work fine. I can also get audio from the headphone jack, but the jack is a bit "touchy" so I think it has a bad connection.

In any event, this is where things get... interesting. I booted a Linux live CD on the system, to rule out the speakers or the audio "card" being dead, and was able to hear sound just fine. In fact, I even streamed an Internet radio station and the audio sounded wonderful. So, this tells me it's clearly a Windows driver issue.

I've downloaded and installed the latest audio drivers from HP, with no luck. I've deleted the current audio driver, a "SoundMAX Digital Audio" and let Windows re-install it, with no luck. I was going to try a BIOS update next but I wondered if that would help because the audio plays perfectly on Linux, just not on Windows.

Any other ideas on what to try to get the audio driver working properly? When the driver I have is installed, it reports the audio device is working properly and I get NO yellow question marks, meaning everything is being detected.

I have a Vista Business 32bit OS and am hving trouble solving the famous 'no-sound' mystery.
I tried the simplest way of solving it:

1. Downloaded the Realtek AC'97 driver (as guided by some other forum: No sound with Windows Vista)

2. Tried installing by running up 'setup.exe'.

3. All was well till Vista came up with this message:
'Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software' and had two options:-
-> Don't install this driver software
-> install this driver anyway

I tried using the 2nd option - nothing happened and the same message popped up.
The 1st option obviously quit the installation process.

What do I do? Can anyone please help me on this?? It is frustrating to have a computer without sound and nothing to be done about it..

Recently, the WiFi on this particular laptop has been sub-par. Downloading the same file, the WiFi downloads at the rate of 70 kbps (pretty bad) while the Ethernet cable is at 700 kbps ~ 1000 kbps. I know that the Ethernet is almost always faster than the WiFi but the discrepancies are just jarring. I also noted that the signal strength is at maximum so distance isn't an issue. This isn't the case with other devices, such as my phone's WiFi speed, where I can stream HD Youtube videos with no problem.

Possible culprits:

Whenever I use Intel Driver Update Utility to attempt to fix the problem, it shows that I need to update my WiFi driver and my Bluetooth driver. The weird thing is that after I downloaded and installed those updates, it says that I need to install those same drivers after re-scanning for updates. This tells me that there's something fishy with this laptop's wireless drivers software-wise.

I have an Intel Wireless Dual Band AC 8260 as my wireless driver. I'm not really familiar with these, but I heard somewhere that there are certain frequency speeds (5 GHz, etc...) that need to be configured in order for the driver and the router to be compatible. The weird thing is that I've been using my laptop for 3 months now and it didn't have a problem until two weeks ago, which makes me think that this is a software problem.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Are you on the first Win 10 or the Anniversary version. I noticed when I upgraded with a clean install with anniversary that some drivers are updated to Microsoft installed drivers but aren't 100% compared the first Windows 10 (non insider version) Even with severely outdated drivers all the driver dates are inside Windows are really off. They didn't fix something with drivers and updating them. Nothing extreme but its gonna give some people issues on older machines. I think with insiders earlier on Anniversary are using newish type PC's. My laptop is a 2013 model and nothing special but fully updated/optimized it amazes me. So its gonna take some trial and error with drivers.

I've just been 'talking' extensively with the software side, & we basically came to the conclusion that my current ancient computer is on the outs & doesn't have long to live. It cannot be upgraded.
I'd like to build a new one from scratch. Although I'm a novice & have never tried this at home, I did take an A+ course last year so am not totally unprepared.
I've been browsing on Pricewatch.com...I'd like to buy a motherboard combo (P4, at least 2.0Ghz) w/ integrated sound (upgradeable), USB 2.0, DDR SDRAM, heatsink & fan, a case/power supply combo, a video card with at min. 64mb ram (I'm not a serious gamer) and a hard drive--at least ATA 100 & 40Gb. I'd just like any suggestions/recommendations/cautions from anyone who's done this before & really knows what they're doing, so I don't screw it up. I'd appreciate any tips anyone wants to give me on products, etc. Oh yeah, I'd like to keep my Win ME & load it on the new HDD, mainly because I resent the fact that Microsoft won't let me put XP on more than one computer (if this is a dumb idea, please tell me why) Thanks!

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm completely new to these forums, so hello! I'm hoping someone out there can help me with the following problems. It's a doozy, and has completely gotten worse over the last few days. Please read on...

My computer at home contracted a particularly nasty virus. The computer initially ran slower than molasses (probably from spyware/adware/virus), so my wife and I have been attempting to fix this problem. It was totally *my* fault, as I went on a gaming website and it downloaded some content that's now choking the life out of the computer.

I recently attempted to install new virus protection. Now, the computer is telling me that the copy of Windows XP I have is an illegal copy (which is NOT true, it was legitimately bought), and that I need to validate the copy. My wife has the administrative privileges on the computer, so I could only get so far this morning in fixing the problem. Compounding problems are the anti virus program I installed is failing to initialize, and sometimes Windows Explorer crashes, and leaves me with just the background picture, but no desktop whatsoever.

The CD rom drive still works, albeit slowely (takes forever to load the contents of a CD). I am a complete newbie when it comes to these types of errors. We have a lot of stuff on the computer that needs to be saved, so a "do or die" reinstall won't be feasible, as we don't want to lose everything we have on the computer. I think... Read more

Hi ladies and gentleman...

I'm fairly confident in that I'm not the only one who is wondering about which fans are reliable and whether or not they truly make a difference from one another.

I was just wondering, which 80mm fans, which 120mm fans, and which 92mm fans people recommend...

Thank you.

A:Fans - Recommendations needed :)

i may not have recommendations for 80 and 92mm fans but i just want to say a few things.

try and get a fan that has low dBa but high CFM. higher CFM is usually accompanied by higher dBa (more noise) unless its a 120mm which runs on lower RPMs but provide more CFM for the RPM because if its bigger fins.

on avg, i guess a 28 dBa is silent enough for most people (esp me) and dBa:CFM ratio arent so good on smaller fans compared to 120mm fans persay
avg dBA and CFM on 80mm fans are 30 and 34. having a few of these in ur case can get pretty annoying (maybe its jus the ones i had, they were ghetto fans by sunbeam)

sleeve bearings vs ball bearings
sleeve is quieter but less life
ball is bit more noise but longer life. its all up to u n ur preferences.

in terms of brands, im not so sure, jus dont pick a 2$ fan. u get what u pay for.

anyway im not sure if any of what i wrote make much sense... i need to go to sleep now lol gnight

I currently use a Seagate 5TB portable drive to store basically everything (my Lightroom Catalog & photos, my videos, documents, music etc), so this means very little is stored on my Mac HD, and doesn't slow it down, especially when doing post-production on photos or video. The drive was formatted to exFat when I bought it, and this means that when I was travelling between home, work and college I could plug my drive into any machine (Win or Mac) I can access my LR catalog and edit my work anywhere.

However, the drive is almost full, and I wanted to upgrade to a larger portable drive (at least 8TB). However I am finding it difficult to find an 8TB drive that doesn't require an external power source. It's not a problem at home just plugging the power lead into a socket, but in work or college there often aren't accessible sockets within reach, so it's vital that the 8TB drive can do the same as my current 5TB drive and take its power from the Mac itself.

I did order the following: https://www.photospecialist.ie/lacie-porsche-design-p-9233-8tb-drive-usb-3-0#group5315
It seemed to fix the bill, because it's USB 3.0, although it has a USB-C socket, which I've not seen on any drives before. I think it's meant to suit people connecting to their Macbooks or phones. However after I ordered I discovered that the drive needs an external power source, and also I found a lot of reviews online on Amazon where people were complaining about the... Read more

My laptop has only two USB ports, which quickly turns into a shortage given all the things that connect to USB. With literally thousands of hubs available, I'm hoping someone has some personal experience on the subject that they could share. Which manufacturers are more reliable than others? Before I put this paper 1200 paper weight on Offer Up this is my last attempt to resolve the horrible wifi adapter that comes with the Yoga 730. It's a known problem still no fix from Lenovo. I love to use my laptop to connect it to my TV to stream NFL Sunday tickets among other thing. When I connect with the original **bleep** adapter the internet will not stop disconnecting but looks good and full screen on the TV. With the 8265 and 9260 it works better but looks horrible, cuts the sounds in and out and is not full screen. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with this laptop. I'm aware I can connect it HDMI and live with that but I don't want to have to do that. It should simply work as intended. It's a known problem with several other model as well. This is my 3rd Yoga and I always thought it would get better but always worse.

I've built a couple of computers, troubleshot them when their was problems, had probably hundreds of hours of maintenance/gaming on them, and have loved every minute!
Building a computer is too much fun to consider buying one complete.
But it has been a few years since I have done this, and I am having some problems ferreting out the new boards, etc., and would appreciate some advice.

I am building a computer not for anything specific, but need it to have enough power and RAM to be able to play with pictures, and video if desired.

I was thinking about getting an Asus with an AMD processor, 3000-4000 processor, 800 MB front side bus, and 1 GIG of DDR RAM. I didn't know if the different types of sockets made much of a difference, these days. I have always run AMD, and don't know about the different kinds of Intel processors.

I have been told to get a hard drive, SATA2, at least 160GB, with a minimum of 8MB cache, I assume 7200 RPM minimum.

Case/power supply combination, I don't know how many watts is even considered normal these days.

DVD Burner- don't think this is a biggie as to which brand, but may want a multi-layered one for backup purposes

Along with the normal modem, there is a chance that this may be set up a a server for a network at my house, eventually. So, if I didn't get the components as an integral part of the motherboard, I would need enough slots to expand.

Finally, I know that I can make a real screamer for over $1000, but ... Read more

I know almost nothing about editing videos and get confused when I see the menus and controls in editing software. I don't even understand the terms. For instance, I don't see anything that looks straight forward to me as to how to open a video for editing. Instead, I see something that says "Open a Project" and I don't quite understand what to do with a video even if I do figure out how to open it in a "Project".

So, I'm kinda lost.

Here are some of the things I would like to do:

Join two videos together
Take out uninteresting segments that may be several seconds or several minutes long
Compress time, meaning in an instructional how-to-disasemble/reassemble video speed up time through repetitive identical processes, like maybe the removal of several screws.
Convert a larger MTS file to something much smaller so it can be easily downloaded and viewed, or attached to an e-mail
Remove a single frame from a video file to save as a still image
Brighten a darken a video
Color corrections

These are some of what I would like to do and if I am going to buy a software that will do these things and then learn how to use it, what would be a good one under $150? Lots of YouTube tutorials available.
I just open WMM ... and Drag n Drop my vids

Most videos are too large to Email ... I use YouTube and Email the link.
Still frames from a video are usually poor quality ... (depends on what quality you need) ... I usually use a ScreenShot .. It's the same as WMM's Snapshot view

Other than these restrictions ... WMM is easy to use (and understand) and will probably do what you want to do .. (for free)
I do this regularly .. and WMM and WDVDM is all I use

I have a friend with an aggravating e-mail service. I've forgotten whether it is MSN, ATT or what. Every thirty days, she has to jump through some hoops or her e-mail is inaccessible. The "hoops" have to do with giving them a phone number to which they can send a text message (she has no cell phone) or sending some kind of e-mail to a separate e-mail address that she must use to verify something. Then her e-mail access is restored.

Frankly, I don't know the exact details of all she has to do as the last time I helped her with it was several months ago.

I have recommended she change to one of the other free services and I need recommendations on services that will NOT give her this kind of aggravation. I don't use a free service so I don't know which ones might or might not turn into a fiasco like this one has.

l know its better to have internal sound cards, however due to the fact l swap and change between my laptop and PC l tend to opt for an external sound card since l have less messing about with speaker connections and less messing around and moving the PC to access the connections.

basically lm looking for a sound card that will give me settings to upmix the audio as it kinda seems my current creative soundblaster live 24bit external while compatible with CMSS doesnt have windows 7 support, so lm looking for an external sound card that supports windows 7 which will allow me to upmix because l have these 5.1s and much of my video content annoyingly only plays only through the front speakers even with ffdshow audio settings set to speaker fill regardless of if l use WMP or MPC-HC.

The ASUS XONAR sound cards are popular, based on posts on this forum. Soundblaster's used to be the most popular sound cards but I see more and more other brands being used.

Printer: Epson Workforce 600 (scanner, copier, printer combo).
Computer HP Pavilion a6530f (nearly new), running Vista 64-bit, AMD Phenom 8450 Triple Core processor, 2.10 GHz, 4 Gigs of RAM.

Problem: Printer prints plenty fast once it starts printing but takes a l-o-o-o-ng time to start printing.

Everything else on this system runs fine, programs start and run at expected speeds, other printers are fast. This printer ran well for about 7 months until this problem started about two weeks ago.

Example: When printing a test page, it takes 42 seconds just to display the dialog box that says a page has been sent to the printer and a total of 87 seconds before it actually starts to print. This is typical of all documents, plain text as well.

I uninstalled the printer's software and drivers, went in and made sure all its folders were also deleted and then restarted the system and reinstalled the drivers without change in result. The USB cable has also been swapped.

I connected the printer to my laptop (which runs XP Pro), loaded its drivers and the problem did NOT present, so the problem is in the HP Pavilion a6530f.

Any suggestions?

Can you burn a CD-R successfully? If you can, it suggest either a dirty Laser in the drive or a defective Laser. Its rare to have a dirty laser, so if it is defective, the drive will need to be replaced.

Hey there,

about a week ago i installed Windiws Vista Business. i noticed a couple of times that my PC jusr restarted itself. other than that it worked fine up until last night. it all started with intenet explorer. i couldn't open any website. it said something about corrupted file. so i figured i'll give it a restart. and then the it wouldn;t boot up anymore. it says that windows failed to start.... then it says:

file \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\acpi.sys

status 0xc000000F

windows failed to start because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt.

i already tried to do what it said there. it told me to put in the original CD of vista and click on repair. well that didnt work. it was repairing over 18 hours and nothing is happening.

any suggestions? plz if u could help me i would really appreciate it, i have all my work, school stuff = pix on the harddrive i wouldnt want to loose that.

A:I have problem starting up Vista - problem with driver

Sounds similar to an old xp thing with the acpi have you tried loading to a safe dos mode and running checkdisk with the appropriate parameters I think its "checkdisk /f /p" you'd need to run "checkdisk /?" just to make sure.

After reinstalling WinXP I then installed all relevant drivers. Everything was working well. Then I updated Windows. After sp3, everything still good. But after installing over 20 more Win updates, when rebooted I get the Blue Screen : STOP: 0x000000EA. Specifying that nv4-disp is in an infinite loop.
I've found suggested solutions that tell me to uninstall & reinstall the nv4-disp driver, but since it worked well until the updates I'm thinking that the problem is with one of those updates.
Anybody got any thoughts on this??

So, i was playing Plague inc on my computer with no problems, listening to music, when both of my monitors go black with a "no input" pup-up. My music is still playing, so I unplug and plug back in all the cables connected to my monitors, and still no input. My main monitor is plugged in directly to my computer, and my second monitor is plugged into my graphics card. I turn off my computer my holding down the power button, and re boot.
When my computer boots only my main monitor works ( the one plugged in directly to my computer) So I check device manager to see if something happened to my graphics card. It's is still there under display adapters. So I go to AMD's website to download the drivers. After finishing the install, I get this popup [1]
So, I uninstalled my drivers completely, and reinstall them, same issue. I check the cables and everything works fine, so I unplug my second monitor from my graphics card and plug it into my computer, and it works. I plug my main monitor into my graphics card and it doesn't work.
Both monitors work when plugged into my computer, both monitors do not work when plugged into my graphics card.
Anybody have any ideas? Do I need to get a new card? Thanks

A:Driver problem? GPU problem? Any Help greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to TSG.

Based purely on your description the most likely problem, in my opinion, is the graphics card. You have done some basic fault diagnosis and confirmed that both monitors are working and the cables are OK (they both work in the onboard card).

To give you some informed advice, can you provide more information about your setup?

Exactly what make and model is it? Assuming its a prebuilt machine like a HP, Dell, Acer, eMachines etc. Also, have you changed or upgraded any hardware since you bought it?

If it's a self / custom build, what is the exact make and model of the motherboard (including revision number), CPU, RAM, GPU, power supply (make, model and wattage) etc. The more info the better.

What operating system are you using (WinXP, 7, 8, Linux etc) and is it 32 or 64 bit?

Have you physically removed and reinstalled the graphics card, could be a minor connection problem?

hi chap, what a familiar problem!

what you need to do is:-
download this .iso from http://ez-files.net/download.php?file=c0143908
mount and burn the .iso to a CD
boot from the CD and follow the instructions to reset your password
once you've reset and rebooted, chkdsk runs and finds some problems, just agree to any questions and let chkdsk run, then your admin password should be what you just set it to. (you can even blank it if you want)

A few days ago my pc froze on google chrome and I restarted the PC started it started going weird and started running CHDSK at every start up? The CHKDSK stops after stage 2 and then windows starts.
Ive taken off chrome and tried starting ion safe mode and it always stopped at the AVG Free 2014 lod info. I have run the AVG removal tool and this is now an issue as this started running on every start up? I managed to stop the AVG removal tool.
I found online how to disable CHKDSK on start up by typing in chkntfs in the windows command prompt.
Can anyone help me. I know I can get a new PC etc but I have an old program that can only run on XP and I also have a load of other software on the sytem.
Had a computer guy come around but he just went on about him putting anew hard drive in etc and his invoice would of been twice what I can get a new pc for!!

Try running the chkdsk /r command (not chkdsk /f) from the command prompt on your Windows partition. That should eliminate the less-substantial chkdsks at boot. Procedure is detailed by Anshad Edavan at Chkdsk From Command Prompt, Win 7 - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/496613/contextmenu-is-causing-explorerexe-to-crash/?p=3067880 .Louis

Hello and thanks for reading.

I'm one of those people who hates the idea of not having the latest drivers (yes, this means even if the hardware is working perfectly). While I've been installing my own drivers from the manufacturer sites for years, I wouldn't mind having a program that reliably informed me whether all of my drivers are up-to-date or not, and would grab what I need when the answer is "not" (and even paying a few bucks for it).

I just built a new Win 7 64 machine, so this would come in handy. So, does anyone make a driver installer application that worth the money? Endorsements or recommendations?

I'm skeptical especially because I just happened to download the "free" version of Driver Agent, and while it did identify a number of older drivers I was able to update from the manufacturer, it also continues to claim that I have several drivers that are outdated that the manufacturer clearly says are current.

Interested to hear your experience and/or input,

Recently the chdsk function ran on my PC and showed a message "Replacing Invalid Security ID with Default Security ID" on a lot of files, about 380k.Now, on reboot (even in Safe mode), I get the mouse pointer on a BSOD with no control at all.I've managed to use the Dell Reinstallation DVD to get a command prompt up and I can see all drives and files are where they should be, everything is in order and there is no HDD fault orhardware issue. Assuming this check disk has caused a ACL corruption issue somewhere, can I fix it given I've got the command prompt? If so, how? Alternatively, if I reinstall Vista from the Dell 'Reinstallation DVD Windows Vista" disk I have, will it leave my data where it is? Any ideas would be very helpful...Edit: Moved topic from Windows Vista to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hello, I installed xp on a clean formatted (by a sp3 installed disk during install) After I installed it I shut down and ran disk check it removed two entries, I was still able to boot into windows, Then I shut down again and checked the disk from another hard drive installed with xp sp3. It found a huge amount of entries and deletes them, Then I cant boot to the hard drive anymore with out it say a bunch of files are missing. Now I used DBAN to full erase that hard drive and then I reinstalled it again with my xp sp3 cd and a real valid license from my retail box (same one used before on the disk) and then I ran chdsk and it starts deleting pages of stuff again! i tested the hard drive with WD diagnostics and several hard drive testers and its still near 100% whats wrong?

WHAT is "near" 100%? I hope you can be more specific about this; are you finding bad clusters or sectors on the drive?

Hello Guys. I'm new to the forum.

First of all I'm having a problem on my computer that runs on window 7x64.
After booting the system it says that Boot MGR is missing Press Alt+Ctr+Del to restart.

I tried to reinstall the Windows from the Dvd but i'm unable to install any

I did some research on this and found some solutions and tutorials! I was told that I need to click on Repair on Computer after inserting the disc and then system repair and stuff.

When i did this it shows another error that C boot is corrupt; Run Chdsk Utility. I tried to do the stuff with command prompt also but it looks like nothing is working for me.

Could anyone help me in this ? I would be very thankful of him. Thanks.
Hoping to get a quick response

A:C Boot is Corrupt ; Run Chdsk Utility

Boot to the Win 7 DVD...hit F8 and select Advanced boot Options...select repair install...
Do NOT interrupt it...even if it seems to hang.

A re-install is kinda a bad idea as all your data and apps will be gone...but youl'd have a clean Win7 install...

Well, I got a friend in school that has a Sony Vaio desktop computer running on windows Xp 3.1 (no sp2, dont know if even sp1) , FAT32 hard drive, which has never been connected to the internet. He has this blue things that covers the walls that does let the sounds in the room (i dont know if that helps lol, but im setting the environment ), and the problem started 4 days after the computer was used normally and left there.
He has the following problem:

It also says "file is cross-linked on allocation", "directory service repair", first allocation unit not valid", "the entry will be truncated"...and many other actions that the computer performs before logging in.

I searched for similar errors on internet and found one that appeared similar but had different files on it. The process is called CHKDSK, and displays something like:

I recently did a chkdsk and it showed that my disk has bad clusters/bad sectors. My laptop is still under warranty so I called up the company but it doesn't sound like they'll replace the hd for me. They keep saying that it's nothing and that having bad sectors is ok as long as its not bad clusters. I on the other hand believe that this is a precursor to more bad sectors and eventual failure. They keep saying that they'll do a "recovery" on the hd and when they get the machine, they will run their tests and determine if the computer needs a hd replacement (and they will do so if THEY deem it needed). I just don't want to waste my time sending it to them if all they're going to do is reformat it and put everything back on. I can do that myself. I'm going to call them in a few days, but I needed some things to say so I can make them guarantee that they'll replace my hd.

How can I convince them that my hard drive is failing and that this is a serious enough issue to warrant a replacement of the hd? Or, like the guy says, am I being too cautious about bad sectors. Is this not a big issue at all?
