Added security made my PC slower

Q: Added security made my PC slower

Hello. I just recently added some suggested programs to my computer and in order to keep me protected but now it's slower.
This is what was done:

1. Replaced Ad-Aware 6.0 with SE version
2. Downloaded Spybot
3. Spyguard
4. Spyblaster
5. Zone Alarm (free version)
6. Hijack This (newest version)

but even after all of this to protect me, it's slower than ever. Any ideas?

I have Windows XP - Pentium II processor
Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In order to upgrade my IE browser I was told I must upgrade to Service Pack 1 and 2.
Did that.
Computer operated so sluggishly after that I got a tip that Virus Protection software might be causing the problem.
So sure enough I put my Kaspersky offline and things sped up to about pre SP1&2days.
Now what? If I want to have Kaspersky effective again?
Still haven't upgraded to new Explorer.
Any ideas?

Welcome
Many people have a problem similar to yours, their Anti Virus slows the computer. We give them all the same advice and they are all happy that they took it.
First call your anti virus company and explain the problem, if they cannot help
Make a system restore point
Then uninstall your Anti Virus and install Microsoft Security Essentials, it is made for Windows and will work as it should.
Do not get tied to an anti virus that is not doing the job. Yes, I know you paid for it and might even like it, but go with one that will work without problem.
If you do take my advice, also, download the free Malwarebytes, it works great with Essentials and it, too, is free. You will now have a computer that is safe as many of the senior members here that use Essentials, like myself, and are very happy.

Hello, in an attempt to fix an error stating "The ac adapter type is not supported. System will continue on battery. Press any "key to continue," I updated my display adapters after seeing that someone else had fixed the problem by doing the same thing. This, however, did not fix the problem and made my computer slower. I attempted to reinstall the drivers, but this made it even worse again.

I am using an Alienware laptop and my display adapters are an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M. Even stranger, my computer speeds up slightly when I disable the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 display adapter.

my 'boot time'...from pressing the on button ....to when the desktop is fully loaded....was approx 3 minutes. approx 80 services running in task manager.
I consulted eldergeek and did a thorough job of either disabling, or making manual or automatic etc . I made a few small blunders...eg...making HID input service 'manual' stopped the volume adjusters on my keyboard working....butr apart from this i thought i made a decent job of it.
My 'boot time' is now 4+ minutes !!
What have i done ???
My pc is definitely quicker once loaded....much snappier.....but the boot up time
I am quite prepared to do a system restore, and work my way through the whole rigmarole again......but i have already backtracked and gone over my steps....and i am knackered if i can understand why this is so.

A:removing services made bootup slower !!

Sorry, but I am not a fan of disabling services. The performance gains tend to be minimal and the risks of seriously disrupting normal system operation much higher. I have read a great many guides for disabling services and most contain serous errors.

I would do a system restore and leave services as they are.

Although I never had problems with spyware/virus etc I was scared into buying antivirus software and a firewall. I opted for McAfee because it was on special. After installing it, my PC slowed to a near halt. Every single thing I do is very slow. I defraged, ran spybot s/d, cleaned internet trail, deleted heaps of unused programmes/photos/music with eraser, all to no avail. PC is still slow. What can I do?

A:after installing McAfee security, PC got slower and slower

Uninstall McAfee comes to mind.
Try the (free) AVG7 instead from www.grisoft.com or the (free) Avast! from www.avast.com

Hello,

I "recently" found out a way to save a lot of ram by disabling services for example The Windows Update Sevice or the Windows Installer and so on.

It was great because it made my PC faster by freeing up RAM. But somehow it made my PC slower booting up. When all services are turned on it uses a lot of RAM but it makes the boot-up faster. When a lot of the services are disabled my system runs faster but it takes longer to start.

Maybe I have disabled some kind of Boot-up Optimizer service.

If you got a clue enter the name of the service which should be enabled to make my computer booting up faster.

NOTE: When I turn on my PC there happens a lot of things. The only thing that goes slower is the Windows is starting up.... sequence. Other things like logging in to an account goes very fast.

A:Disabling services from services.msc made my PC boot up slower (RESOLVED)

Hi

Have a look at these services guides and see if there are any adjustments you need to make to your own setup.

So, I updated to Firefox 3 and all is good. I then spent the better part of a day trying to
find the magical anti phishing & other malware security updates to the new browser.
Finally I broke down and limped over to Mozilla to post my query. "How can I locate the
new security features to make sure my download went correctly?" The answer I got was that
the new features are hidden and only pop up when you have visited a site or downloaded a file with malware in it. I love Firefox, I love Mozilla, but come on, I should traipse around the
web until I get some verification of the security features working by way of a notification message or until my computer is so loaded with garbage it gives me a dose?

A:Firefox 3 added security?

I've read everywhere that overall the extra security should help make for safer browsing, but none of the upgrades will prove a major deterrent for malware pushers.

Thanx

A:Solved: Added folder security

Do you have a password on your account? They would need that to see your files if you have them encrypted.

You could also put them in a zip file and password-protect the zip.

There are several, small, encryption programs here:

If you are running a full internet security suite do you "need" any additional programs or are you in good shape to thwart attacks on your PC? Also, I have heard that virus programs and firewalls conflict w/each other when both are running simulatenously, is it true?

A:Programs Conflicting and added security!

Yes, firewalls and AV programs will conflict if run simultaneously. Actively run only one.

"Suites" are not usually the best way to secure broad malware protection. First, the programming of a "suite" is complex and can lead to problems, esp. if you want to remove it. Second, parts of the "suite may not be the best available. I have seen references here at TSG recommending individual programs, and I have followed that advice.

Comparison of antivirus software - Wikipedia

I am currently adding countries to my list of recommended software and I can not find out a few.
I really dislike software, which hides its origin, they obviously know why, that makes it even worse.
Whenever for legal or personal reasons, I just want to know and let it be shown, so people can choose.

Sandboxie? I guess US (Fairfax, VA).

Glasswire? Germany? Cleverbridge is based in Germany.

VoodooShield? I guess US (in Kansas), but they do not list it.

Hi all,

I'm sorry to post again, but I've some problems....

Recently I've got a lot of pop-up ads for anti-spyware etc. I've got a flashing icon in my system tray that says I have all sorts of malware (which I think is malware), and I had these two icons added to my programs list "live safety center" and some security thing which I deleted. I've been getting a lot of norton alerts telling me that it's found and deleted certain viruses etc. I think largely it started with Virtumundo and I downloaded to Vundofix programs and ran them and they seemed to work except that I'm still infected and I have no idea how I keep getting infected. I've ran norton, spybot, AVG, cleaned all my prefetch, temp files, garbage files, cache etc using CCleaner, Clean Up! and ATF Cleaner. But it keeps coming back. I'm running spybot again now and I think it's found some more stuff. I'm posting my HJT log below.

Since my last post, where my IE was knocked out, I haven't been using IE but using Firefox instead, which is now my default browser. But the pop-ups still come up in IE windows.

Currently, I've run VundoFix and Vurtomondubegone, spybot, and AVG, and combined i thought I picked up whatever virus I had. Securing Microsoft Outlook on the Windows PC (may also be applicable for Mac users).

I am unaware of any currant threats against Outlook Desktop Client, however: With all of the current threats, especially spam, Ransomware, malicious documents, .zip attachments, and even iframes and JavaScript propagating Ransomware and Malware, have you considered disabling both the Attachment Preview and/ or the Reading Pane (The part generally on the right side where you can view the message without double-clicking the message to open. That way, if you are unsure of the sender, you can move it to Junk before opening. I have done out of caution.

There have been 0-days before and they are likely to be a problem in the future as both Internet Explorer, Office and I believe Windows all have OLE integrated in them. It's also wise, as when you Open Outlook and it downloads messages, what happens if the last message it downloads is malicious and you have both the Attachment Preview and Reading Pane enabled? The email will displayed, possibly the attachment previewed (within a sandbox of some sorts such as IE). There is a potential for exploitation.

I have a problem with my Hitachi 3tb duo pro drive external hard drive. As i put more files it seems to get slower in one folder. An example is today, the access speed to find a patients name in it ( about 6k folders) would take about 30 secs. Before that it would only take 10 seconds and when i had about 4k folders it was pretty instantaneous. I've tried defrag, disk clean up, disabling background processes but I do not know how to solve this problem. Is the problem is too many subfolders in one folder? Or is there a solution to make it fast enough as I first started to use it. Yesturday it was not that bad but when i started today, it was unbearable. ANy feedback is appreciated thx.

A:Extkernal hard drive slow access speeds getting slower and slower

Well it depends how many loose files are in the folder. For instance say I have 10,000 pictures in one folder and that folder when I open it is taken for ever to load cause it is trying to cache all the contents and index all those files that are contained in it. If I go into that particular folder and create more folders lets say 10 folders, then place 1000 pictures in each folder then it will load a lot faster cause there not so many files in one folder to cache and index. Try and keep you files down to a moderate number of files inside the folders. It's like trying to stuff a bunch of paper inside a manilla folder it can only hold so many before it doesn't function any more....

Also most USB drives go idle and stop spinning after about 15 minutes usually, you can use the software that came with the drive to configure the usb to spin all the time. A 3tb drive is huge and I would consider partitioning the drive to 3 separate partitions of 1tb each that would speed things up considerably. Also 2tb is all that windows will see on a MBR partition if you want to keep it at 3tb then you will have to set it at a GPT (GUI Partition Table) for it to be used correctly in Windows 7.

Follow this tutorial on how to change the partition table from mbr to gpt:

Convert MBR Disk to GPT Disk

Some pages won't open, others take forever (little spinning wheel)I have Windows Defender and MalwareBytes (pro version)Yes I clear the cache, but it doesn't help.Any ideas on what to do to stop this? It's so frustrating. I have an old Dell pc with Windows Vista and the browser works great but the OS is a pain, lol.

@Meenie50 I don't know if this will help, but I do know that running two AV products is know to cause problems. You have MBAM so there is no need for Windows Defender -- so I would disable it and see if that helps.Good Luck

Hi,After reviewing your log, it has been determined, that there are no infections present on your computer. Not every Computer problem is caused by malware. Please create another Topic, in the Windows XP Home and Professional forum, with a thorough explanation of the problems you're experiencing, such as:How long have you had this problem? What have you done to try and correct this problem? Is this a persistent problem. or does it just occur occasionallyHave you installed any new hardware/software recently? What were you doing when this problem first started? The exact Error Messages, you may have received.etc...Please also include:Operating System (XP Home, XP Pro, etc.)Browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)Antivirus usedSpyware/Malware programs usedBy including as much information as possible, we will better be able to understand your problem, which will result in your computer being fixed, in the most timely manner.Do NOT post a HijackThislog there. Also, to avoid confusion, mention that you have already posted a HijackThis log, and it was found that you had no infections. This will prevent others from suggesting, that you post a HJT log for examination.Since there were no infections found, on your computer, I will now close this Topic. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.

Hi,

I bought my laptop about a year ago, and back then it was absolutely amazing. But with time it has become slower, and I'm wondering if you could help me with some tips on how to make it run faster in games like Borderlands 2, Minecraft and Watch Dogs.

some of my specs are:
Intel Core i7-4700M
NVIDIA GeForce 780M
x1 SSD 125GB (Main, windows installed here)
x1 HDD 1,5TB (Secondary, steam, games etc installed here)
Resolution: 1920 x 1080

Please tell me if you need more information.

A:Gaming laptop getting slower and slower, tips needed

Defrag, clear cache's, uninstall unused programs/games.
Check for dust buildup.
Think about and take a look at the programs you now have versus initially. If they are not needed right away, set them to not auto load with windows. Run as needed instead of always on.

Check the manufacturer site for and update drivers. (Video, audio, USB, ect. )

The more stuff you add, the slower it will get, so trim it back to what you need and it should speed back up.
Also check that your antivirus has a game mode, as antivirus are the largest slowdown of a system.

I guess it is also possible that over time the PSU and hardware can wear down and have trouble performing, but try the cleaning and stuff first.

Hi,My laptop has been steadily getting slower and slower, freezing if more than a couple of windows are open and it crashed today leaving me with a black screen and a mouse. When I rebooted it it needed to be restored to an earlier point because of damaged files.I had tried removing progams, pics and old files. Also, my computer says that I am using CA anti-virus which I have not used in over a year and a half. SuperAnti Spyware also says I am running CA Antivirus and Firewall (as activated). It has been uninstalled from my computer and does not show in my list of progams which can be uninstalled (under Windows Control Panel).Next, when I was running a symantec check (I am a student and use the corporate edition) I saw two files that I can not find when I search my hardrive, but the anti-virus didn't recognize it as a virus. They both had unusual names, appeared to be directly on my C:// drive and one ended in a .pif extension. (Of course it flew by my screen so quick that I would never had seen it if I hadn't been looking at that program at that moment and I am unsure if the other even had an extension.)Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can give me. I have a small web business and of course I use the laptop far more than my desktop. Hello everyone,

This is my first post here, and I did a few searches about slow boots, but nothing seems like the problem I'm having.

I just switched from a MSI KT3 Ultra 2, with a Athlon xp 2000 cpu and 1 gig of ddr 333 memory (2-512 sticks) to a MSI K8T Neo-V with a Athlon64 3700+ and 1 gig of ddr 333 mem, and now boot up time is twice as long.

All I changed was the motherboard and the processor, the memory is the same from the previous board.

I have 2 pcs I use, one is for a gaming computer(as a server,the one I just upgraded) and one I play games on. (MSI K8N - Neo, AMD 64 3400, 1 gig mem).

The old board with the KT3 ultra2 with the xp 2000 cpu would load up to the welcome screen in 45 seconds. Now that I changed it to a faster CPU its slower starting up.

For example, the old one would start up in 45 seconds, now it takes 85 seconds. Since I upgraded, it takes 12 seconds to start the Windows XP load screen, then another minute before it gets to the Welcome screen. Unfortunately I cant compare the faster time from the old once since its dismantled. I did try unchecking ALL start up programs except for Trend Micro and made absolutely no difference.

Could it be possible that previous settings or whatever from the earlier motherboard are slowing it down? Is there a program or utility that logs the start up and shows how long it takes to load each process, so I can possibly see what it is hanging on?

Once again I am new here, and already Ive seen abou 10 progra... Read more

The performance of my desktop went slower remarkably, in terms of startup loading and opening/closing folders, loading of games..but no graphics lag when I am already in the game, idk what was the issue, but multi tasking became a big headache.

It all started after getting a retarded virus from my sch's lab that turned all my files into shortcuts, I solved that..luckily, and also installed Microsoft Security Essentials to wipe the virus off my TD, and amazingly it found some spyware transferred to my computer as well, all ran smoothly after that, until it kept updating my computer with the latest updates, when i already disabled windows updates earlier, didnt want to get any problems after updating..bleah, talk about now.

EDIT: I cant pinpoint when the BSODs occur, its almost random, when im playing music(alone & idle), games, opening a mail..yeah almost random.

Anyway really appreciate the help that you guys provide to us strangers :)!

I am not sure yet but i think sleep/hibernation is the culprit. I think Windows becomes slower and slower after several sleeps/hibernations. CPU gets more spikes and hard disk is frequently active and slow (when i do something simple, like opening folder, resuming music playing after long time, resuming YouTuben videos playing after long time and especially when MSE antivirus updates itself the hard drive slows down for 3 minutes until MSE is finished). But if i restart computer everything goes back to normal.

Here are my system specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
1GB RAM
80GB Hitachi SATA 150
GeForce Go 2400
Windows XP Home 32-bit

I am a novice that has run into trouble with Location tools.I have tried Googling the issue, but I am not exactly sure what I have done.

I am rebuilding my laptop which has a medium size SSD and a 1Tb hard drive running Windows 7 Professional 64. I have much of my software installed to the SSD ( C: ), some installed to a small partition ( D: ) on the 1TB disk, and my files to a second partition (F: ) on the 1TB disk.

My Dropbox is in F, and I successfully used the “Location” tool to move my “Downloads” folder to F.
1.I went to move my Favorites folder with the location tool and fat-brained/fat fingered something and I found the individual elements (items and subfolders) of my Favorites folder in F without being part of the folder Favorites.
2.There was an option to return to the “default” which I assumed was like “Undo”.As usual a bad assumption. My individual Favorites stayed on the F Drive and copy of the F Drive appeared in my user folder.
3.I now have a “Local Disk ( F: )” in my User Folder on C:, but luckily it is not “taking up space” on C:. I cannot delete it or drag it. I also have my Favorites (items and subfolders) on F: with a Favorites Folder.
4.One more unusual note…. In one view of my User folder I see “Local Disk F:”, but when I go through Windows: User: I do not see “Local Disk f:”See attached screenshot to see that circumstance and for additional illustrat... Read more

What "Location" tool? Where is it, how do you get to it? The only thing I see if Location in Control Panel and I don't think that is what you are talking about.
