Updating HP BIOS in XP

Q: Updating HP BIOS in XP

Does anyone know how I can install a BIOS update on a Pavilion 6835 running XP? The only instructions I can find require me to be in true DOS mode and that's not possible (as far as I know) in XP.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi there, i am fixing a friends old computer and the hdd was stuffed so i got a new maxtor diamondmax 9 for it. although once installing it i found out that it would only run in udma2 mode (checked it in another computer and it ran at full udma6)
so i suspect that the current bios cannot support udma5 or 6, so i am looking for a bios upgrade for it.
the bios string is 6A69RPRDC-00, the number on the actual motherboard is 35-C960-00-05
thanks for any help, i am really hoping i can make this board work at udma5 at least and not have to settle for udma2.
thanks again

ps. i just found this

if that is any help.

A:help with updating bios. cannot find bios upgrade - 6A69RPRDC-00

WOW..............

Old Machines.....(just like me... but can still perform to the max lol)

I your Bios has the option of udma up to 6 then generally the bios supports the Mode! and your problem is that the HDD does not support the mode (cant remember if you said it does).

You are probably using wrong criteria for bios upgrade search.
Try WWW.driverguide,com

You Need the MB's Manufacturers Name or at least the MB Chipset and bios Manufacturers Name as well. go to the Computers muanufacturers website (you probably done that already) and search model.

otherwise Download a System info utility from Tech Spot, I use SiSoft Sandra or AIDA32.. (sandra might cause bluescreen on older machines).. Aida problably will have link direct to bios update site. hope this was of some help

Most manufacturers have updated BIOS on their websites for download. If it is a custom build, the motherboard manufacturer will have one.

It is not usually necessary to update BIOS unless you have a particular issue that the update resolves . .

Wanted to know if i did a BIOS update can it be easily reversed in case of a failure. Some say by re-flashing the old BIOS back in, some say you need to remove the battery inside case and put it back in while pushing the power button and some say way in BIOS to set it back to default BIOS.

I know it is not important to update a BIOS if there is no major changes to a new one or if you are experiencing hardware compatibility problems because it can brick the MB. I thought it may add some features i do not have for RAM and UEFI.

Although i did it about 4-5 months after purchasing this system and it worked fine. When i go back now and look at the manufacturer's site under my model number PC it lists all .CAP BIOS 's, except for one i have now and below that one on list are .ROM. My version BIOS is 4101

My system uses a .ROM BIOS and it is told to you on the site from list of the systems BIOS's , not to use .CAP if have a .ROM one.
What is weird when i go to the Motherboard on same site instead of the system model, version numbers of each BIOS do not correspond to the version numbers of the system model, but the MB BIOS's are all .ROM ones.

I posted both links plus when i purchased the PC it was with Windows 7 64bit Home Premium, i upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit.
Why i am looking at the Windows 7 64bit chose on each link, actually same on Win8.1 .
First link is System, second is the MB. Any advice or ideas be much appreciated. Oh, ASUS wasn't that sure or helpful once be... Read more

A:BIOS Updating

The windows 8 BIOS file is the last one you could use. the .CAP is for mother board that came with Window 8 installed. You stated yours came with Windows 7 so as the Win 8 BIOS driver say's is only for Mother Board that came with windows 8.
So that solves you problem. It would be foolish of you to update your BIOS unless you know there is a updated feature that you need. Otherwise it is hazardous to your computer. Is you do be sure to extract the downloaded BIOS directly to a Fat 32 USB Stick. Then use the Ezflash in the BIOS. Doing it this way is almost 100% success, Winflash is less that 50% and lots of bricked notebooks. Not all the sure on Mother Board but seem like in the old days you could pull the BIOS Battery and that would set the BIOS back to original version.

I've been trying to update my BIOS as I realised how old the driver is, but I useless, as they tell me to download programs that cost and I just cannot be bothered to go through all that.

Could anyone give me a link to where I can just download an update please?

A:Updating my BIOS

Try here, this is the driver page for your computer model number listed in your specs. Notice the OS says Vista but if its a BIOS update the only relevance of the OS is weather the flash utility will run in Windows 7. All the other drivers listed are for Vista. This could be the correct BIOS for your machine but a second opinion would be most welcome to confirm.

P.S Run at your own risk as we all know the risks of incorrect BIOS updates. Check the motherboard show to be P5LP-LE before flashing.

I  recently acquired a gem of ancient tech-- it is a used hp envy 17-1191nr--  a few changes from stock, however is that it has a new 250GB SSD, 16GB of RAM, and is running windows 10... but one small problem...I think it needs a BIOS update because of the behavior it has when I leave it in sleep mode, it doesn't like to wake up.I have a habit of leaving it asleep but the boot from shut off is not long at all (about 15 seconds or less) What happens is that the keyboard backlight comes on and it seems to be trying to wake up but fails and I think the speakers make a slight pop noise, and then it keeps repeating thatMy 'fix' is to remove battery and power and then re-insert and it starts up again, no problem.Reading on-- I read that it would likely be either the BIOS or the battery. Tonight I did a test with a spare battery and same thing happens.. my co-worker and he said it may be the BIOS too.  My other concern is seeing that the date on my BIOS is also from 2010 (F.1B) and the newer one from HP's website is F.1D from 2011... and that my BIOS is booting from Legacy rather than UEFI.... I'd like to know how to update the BIOS, because I tried changing the BIOS boot order and it doesn't seem to work to get it to boot to CD or USB, when I attempted to change the order, it just tells me to remove CD or USB and press any key to boot normally. This is my system info, if anyone knows what I need to do... I don't plan to jump the gun here and risk brick... Read more

Hey, my laptop has been giving me some pain recently with BSODs when exiting Source games. I've also been experiencing performance drops in these games and in others which were all fine some time ago. Steam support suggesting updating my video and audio drivers (which I did) but they also said I should update my BIOS.

I have never updated my BIOS before and want to ask what and where should I get an update for my laptop, how to apply it and things I should be careful about. Also, would this void my warranty?

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5742ZG
OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86
CPU Intel Pentium P6100
Motherboard Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series
Memory 3 GB DDR3
Graphics Card(s) NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M

LE: Also, while we're on the subject, do you have any good reads on BIOS updating and when it should be done? It's unexplored territory for me

A:Need help updating BIOS

Hey, first thing you need to do is type msinfo32 in the Start button search/run box. In the window that opens, look up the field Bios version/date and tell us what exactly you see there. This tells you the version number and date of the currently installed bios. By knowing this it can be determined whether an update is actually applicable.

Bios updating used to be a dangerous business in the earlier days but with better and more user friendly tools its quite OK, as long as you take certain precautions. However, do remember that no matter you do everything right, theres a very small chance that your mobo can get bricked, so the responsibility is all yours.

Not trying to frighten you, just need to be careful and be prepared.

It is a good idea to run the Compatibility wizard on the XP Disc prior to installing . . it will tell you what hardware and software is compatible. ( Insert the XP disc while the system is on and choose "Check for Compatibility" )

I like to update to the newest BIOS when I Upgrade a pc to XP, but it is not a exercize to be undertaken lightly . . I use a UPS to prevent a power loss from converting the machine into a trotline weight . .

You can download and run the Belarc Advisor or Everest to find out what MotherBoard you have ( and a lot of other details about the system as well )

Good luck . .

So lately i have been thinking of updating my BIOS now first of all how do you know when its time to upgrade and how does one go about doing this process. I have the Asus P8H61 MLE/CSM. Any insight or help is appreciated

A:Updating BIOS how and when

Unless there is a specific problem you're trying to fix, and you know for certain that the BIOS upgrade will fix that, do NOT do a BIOS update. This is nothing like apps version updates or driver updates. If something goes wrong during the BIOS update, your machine is turned into an electric brick.

My advice to folks is to NOT do any BIOS updates unless you are sure of the following:
1) You have a way to store off the current working BIOS code to a media that can be used to restore it
2) You have a way to restore that saved BIOS code if the update goes badly.

That said, ASUS board I have used in the past had something known as EZ-flash (or something like that) that involved you booting with a special key combination that then launched a BIOS update utility. You could then stick in a diskette or a USB stick and save off the current BIOS. IF that utility still exists with your motherboard, it will be explained in the manual that came with it.

I am having problems using a 200gb drive with an older (2002) gateway. I installed the HD and ran fine for a few months, then I got the the disk read error. I used old drive to load windows and reformatted the 200gb drive, and the it worked fine for another couple months.
I have changed IDE cables and tried everything else but updating bios. So I am currently trying to update the bios with no luck.

My bios readout is as follows
bios rev PT84510A.15A.0005.PO3.0203061931 DATE 03/06/02

I went to gateway website and entered my serial number for the update and found the update for 12/2002, not that current. But i tried it and follwed the directions exactly. the floppy would not work, i got the nonsystem disk error.

Any suggestions for properly updating my bios?

How risky is bios updating. asus sabertooth x58

A:Bios updating

ocir, your motherboard site shows that the latest bios is:
Sabertooth X58 1304 BIOS
2011.09.26 update

I would download the update and most bios system updates have a choice to accomplis from booting a disk
or from the Windows OS.
Choose which you want to do,

I have done this lots of times, mostly from Dell but also intel and asus.

Basically I want to flash my Bios, but the thing is... I am not sure which I have to choose! is it all of them? do I choose the latest one? I am lost.

Bios updates: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3863#bios
Motherboard: GA-Z68A-D3-B3 http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3863#ov

your help is really appreciated.

(p.s. if I am correct, my current version is F3. Not even listed!)

A:Updating BIOS

You only choose one and that is usually the latest one.

That said, are you having a problem that you hope the BIOS update will fix? If not, see the warning:

"Warning:
Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction."

Hiya doin' CHILL here, I need to know how to update my BIOS for my E-machine W3623 System. The BIOS is very outdated (7/29/2005) which I think maybe causing certain performance issues I have been having. I at least want to have the most recent BIOS running for the machine (for optimal performance) which I have already looked into (which is the Coconut Creek CR94510J[1].15A.1015 2009). I realize this update MUST be downloaded straight from the manufacturer ONLY or I could risk screwing myself over.

I downloaded the file from the E-machines support site. Problem is, when I try to run it I get the Intel Express Update Set-up screen which comes up and then it says "This program is unable to continue. Internal System Error: This is a programming or internal problem." After that I can't continue and the process automatically shuts down. So now I'm stuck and don't what know to do. Here is some more information about my system:

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64x
Intel Express Family Chipset 82945G
RAM: 2GB

Also another side question: Is this unit capable of more RAM than 2GB? Thanks in advance and I would GREATLY appreciate any help I can receive on this as I am lost. Let me know if you need anymore specific specs on the system.

A:Need BIG help with updating BIOS

Welcome to SevenForums,

Performance issues aren't necessarily fixed up updating the BIOS. You are running a fairly low-spec PC so I wouldn't expect the performance to be outstanding. What sort of issues are you having? There may be easier way to fix this.

That is the correct BIOS update - how are you flashing the BIOS?

Unfortunately, your machine supports a maximum of 2GB only.

Regards,
Golden

Hey all,

I have the MSI K7N2 Delta mobo, which is supposed to have a 400FSB, but when I set it up in the BIOS, it will only go to 200. I saw an update on MSI for that board, which I think may fix that problem, so I downloaded it to my desktop. How do I go about applying the update? I didn't want to just double click the file and see what it does, instead, I decided I should ask the experts here at TSG first.

Thanks,

PaveFE

hi there

i want to update my bios ( i have asrock motherboard N68-VS3 FX ) and i am a gamer who interested in performance

i have bios ver 1.20

can i use the last bios update 1.70 ? or i have to download all the previous updates first

what i mean is the update cumulative ??

thanks

A:about updating my bios

You only have to update the BIOS if you have a problem with the machine. I wouldn't advise you to update the bios becaause you only update the bios if you have a instability problem that warrants a BIOS flash or installed newer hardware that supports the mother board but its unable to boot with the newer hardwareFor exampleI bought a newer CPU (AMD 6100FX) with a newer motherboard socket AMD 3+ but when i installed it it didn't boot up because the CPU was newer than the manufacturer motherboard bios so that warrants a BIOS update. I look up your board and you have some newer versions of the bios but the current bios only improve windows 8 compatibility. The bios is a cumulative update you have to read the documentation for the exact BIOS version because you cant really tell what changes in these updatesBIOS updating can be risky because if you have experience a power issue or event your computer can become a paper weight
