OE glitch, "close" warning sfx glitch, other stuffs

Q: OE glitch, "close" warning sfx glitch, other stuffs

Not really sure what's going on. Here's some noticeable errors:
-in Outlook Express, I cannot add an attachment. OE freezes as soon as I hit "ok" in the file finder window.
-When I close a program, and, say i haven't saved, there's usually a warning "beep" sound. but now it's some odd click thing that sounds like it's dying.
-Probably unrelated, but Winamp has been having troubles "minimizing" to the taskbar utility (winamp agent) and then coming back up.

here's a HJT just after a rebooting:

Preferred Solution: OE glitch, "close" warning sfx glitch, other stuffs

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have a minor problem with my Lenovo laptop (Vista OS). I may have self-inflicted this one.

Each time I want to fire up my wireless, I have to click on the icon and do a "repair." It then pokes around and says "do you want to run windows wireless" I say yes, and it is off the races.

But the service does not start itself upon boot up.

Now, confessions time, a few weeks ago, in an effort to speed up the boot up (which was VERY slow), I followed the advice of some tech postings and either disabled or set to manual start some of the services. I must have nicked the zero wireless, but for the life of me I can't see which one it is by the descriptions.

Suggestions? I hate to run ALL the services back on. The sytem does boot up and even shut down faster.

Thanks in advance.

First, I extend my love to you, sevenforum!

My laptop specs:

HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 Entertainment Notebook
i5-3210M processor CPU @ 2.5Ghz
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel SCSI disk
system memory 8GB
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M graphics

I purchased this laptop about two months ago and I am shocked to discover that there is already a problem with the sound.

Whenever I am watching or listening to anything with audio -- iTunes, Youtube, Windows Media Player, DVDs, etc. I have noticed that the sound coming from the computer (whether built-in speakers, external speakers or headphones) will experience occasional "glitching". It sounds like a brief buzzy stutter "Brrrrr" that lasts half a second and happens about every minute or more.

I've conducted all the usual system scans and troubleshooting, double-checked that my drivers are up to date and all Windows updates installed, defragmented the disk and prayed to the computer gods for mercy.

Upon reading other posts about audio buzzes, namely this one, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio drivers. On my laptop those drivers are listed as:

- IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
- Intel Display Audio

This has not solved the problem.

I'm not a very experienced computer tinkerer but I'm not a novice user either. I would be grateful for any suggestions you guys might offer for potential steps I can take to either resolve or better understand this audio problem.

If you scan through this section you will see a lot posts with the same or similar problems, so its not just "your" PC.

There have been some problems caused by Wi-Fi, so just for testing, disable the wi-fi and just play an audio file that is already on the PC or a commercial audio CD and see if you get the same problem or if the symptoms change.

In Word 2010, when I restrict formatting and allow editing only in certain areas of a document, it appears that while a user is in an allowed area they also have access to ?change paragraph spacing? under "change styles.? While there, they can go to "custom paragraph spacing" and reformat the entire document, changing the default formatting.

This makes no sense to me. Shouldn?t the option to "change paragraph spacing" be restricted as well? Or am I missing something?

I created a short video to demonstrate the issue:

Any feedfback woulde be greatly appreciated.

A:Word 2010 "Restrict Formatting" Glitch?

This is not a glitch. This is your mistake.

1:01 Should have clicked YES (To delete restricted styles. Only the current style would be left, thus making impossible for user to change between styles with Custom paragraph spacing thing. There would be nothing to change with - option will be greyed out).

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad S10 and when I turn it on, the Lenovo start up screen comes on (like normal) but then it goes to a black blank page with a small white flashing cursor in the top left corner. I looked up what this could be online and A LOT of people with the same laptop have the same problem and they take the battery out, and press the power button for 30 seconds. I tried that button it didn't work, and that's the only suggestion I've been able to find. Others say to reinstall windows XP, but the IdeaPad S10 does not have a DVD Drive. I need this to be fixed as soon as possible, and if I could do it myself and for free would be the best. Please help. :(

Boot into BIOS to see if the hard drive is listed, and check the IDE/SATA data cable.

If this is a new problem and the laptop previously worked, have you made any changes to hardware, BIOS settings or Windows?

Hi all,

Sometimes when I cut/copy folders from one location to another the process will stop and give an error message "cannot move file" with a red x.

Clicking on "ok" cancells the whole cut/copy operation, which can leave you wondering what has or has not been moved and requires trawling through source and target location. Gets a bit annoying when it happens fairly often.

Is this normal windows (XP, SP2) behaviour or is there an update to remedy it?

Thanks in advance

Greetings everyone. This is my first posting here, and I'm not quite certain this is even the proper thread in which to post it, but none of the other threads appear to be any better suited than this one.

I believe it may be best to describe the history of this malady:

I was using an HP DV1000 laptop for several years running Windows XP Professional. In the few months before I took it out of service, it developed a "glitch" which would surface every 60 seconds. This "glitch" consisted of some sort of system input/trigger that would evidence itself in many different ways, such as...

- causing the cursor to suddenly jump to a different area of a page when typing in a document
- causing a web page or word-processing document page to jump as if hitting the "page down" button
- if several boxes were checked (marked for deletion) in an e-mail list, those boxes would all be cleared when the "glitch" hit
- if the computer entered standby/sleep mode, it would awake the computer when it hit (note that it would not do this when computer went into full hibernation mode)

i am NOW using an HP dv6 (specs shown below) running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

Important note: I was using the above-mentioned HP DV1000 laptop (Windows XP Pro) for several years, and this problem only surfaced a few months prior to taking that computer out of service. I used a USB transfer cable to transfer applications/files from that computer to my new HP dv6. In d... Read more

A while ago, I got a virus that I ended up getting rid of by reinstalling Windows (XP Media Center Edition 2005). When reinstalling, I also replaced my wireless networking card, and that was the only hardware change I made. Now, the computer seems to be running fine (maybe even more smoothly), but, with a frustratingly high frequency, it will enter these fits where it locks-up (freezes, sounds repeat, CPU usage goes from below %10 to %100 and right back down) for a few seconds, returns to being fine for a few seconds, and then locks-up again. This repeats consistently until I restart the computer. I can't figure out what triggers it. Sometimes it seems to happen when I'm using Flash (watching YouTube or Blip.tv etc.), but that might be because I'm on the internet on those sites a lot. One weird thing, I ran McAfee, a defrag, and did some other stuff and I didn't have one problem for as long as these were running, and it never happens while I'm playing a game, so it seems to happen during low-intensity usage. The computer can go a day without this happening, or I may have to restart three times in an hour before just giving up. This is incredibly frustrating and makes my computer pretty much useless when it happens repeatedly. I ran Memtest86+, and it didn't detect any errors. I also posted this on EggXpert, but they haven't been much help.

Ok so I'm using a custom visual style made by another user however I don't really like the buttons used that I mentioned above. The creator states it is acceptable to change the theme to however you like as long as you don't redistribute it anywhere.

Ok so I opened up the .msstyles file (using Restorator) located in the theme folder of this VS. I went into the images directory and located what seems to be the images used for the buttons. Intuitively, it seems like it would make sense to replace those images with different ones (perhaps from another visual style) and it should change them. However, would this actually work? Could the theme get messed up in some other way (like proportions or something if the new button images are smaller)? I don't know of any other way to change them that would be easy.

But I did run into another problem. For some visual styles I can't even locate those buttons in the images directory. Where else would they be?

I typicalliy save a file I am working on and then just click the "X" in the upper right hand corner to exit a document. Should I forget to save, I generally receive a prompt asking if I want to save the document before exiting.

A friend insists that the proper procedure to exit a program is to click File then Close to properly close the program. He demonstrated by clicking the "X" to exit the program. When he double clicked the program icon on his desktop, the program opened to the document he was previously working on. (This doesn't happen with all software programs)His argument? "See it isn't really closed, if someone were to hack my computer via a wireless connection, they could see what I am working on so you should always use File, Close." I said "no problem because the wireless connection is encrypted with a password so someone cruisng WiFI's could access the connection anway."

I say the program document is closed when you use the "X" he insists it is still an open document. Anyone care to settle this one?

In windows XP and earlier, the Windows had an option in Properties.
you could tell the Dos like programs weather or not to "Close on exit".

But, in windows 7, there is no checkbox for this in the program propteries.

How do i stop cmd.exe, and programs that execute in a DOS style box, from "Close On Exit" ?

too often i'm missing output that i need to see!

A:Stop "DOS" programs from "Close on exit"

Use cmd /k command_to_run

cmd /k dir

Sorry for the convoluted title, but it was the best I could come up with. My company is running IE 6 across the board. Up until Friday the 6th, when getting the "The webpage you are viewing is trying to close this window. Do you want to close this window?" dialogue and clicking Yes or OK ( dont remember how it presents) it would close the window. Now it does not. Clicking just leaves the message active and does nothing. What could have changed this functionality. Not IE patches have been installed since this started happening.

A:[SOLVED] Internet Explor 6 ""The webpage you are viewing is trying to close"

Disregard. Turns out the "close.window()" call is there, but is being blocked by a security update for Exchange/OWA that went in this weekend.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

When I open an old (2003) Exel-file with VBA-code in it with Excel 2007, I get one of these two responses
and I do not know what causes Excel to make different choices
A Dialog Box: "Microsoft Excel Security Notce"
This one is very similar to the one in Excel 2003 and that is how I want Excel to behave.
The user has to “Enable Macros” to go on and work with the file.

"Security Warning"
This one is new in 2007 and the user can continue to work with the file even if he does not see the security warning.
That means that VBA-code that I (the programmer) want to run when the file is opened, does not execute.

My problem is that I do not know what causes the two different behaviors and cannot force Excel to open files with the first Dialog box.
Can you?

A:Solved: Excel "Security Notice" vs "Security Warning"

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Hello once again TSF! I have been helped a lot by you guys before! Lets see if you can help me again! :)

So, I hardly reboot/shutdown my computer, but i recently cleaned it up and removed some apps i no longer use. All went well.

However, when i went to restart my computer (to finalize uninstall) it got hung up on the "Windows is waiting for programs to close" and what do ya know the list was empty

So I sat and waited about 20 minutes, then i noticed i couldnt click anything and nothing responded but the mouse moving and the power button. HDD light was out too

So i held power button to force shut down, worked. Started up and asked if i wanted to boot to safe mode etc. I selected boot normally. It booted up just fine everything is still working but i can't shut down or restart AT ALL.

I even tried the command in CMD to see if i could get it to shutdown that way using

shutdown /f

and the same thing happened, it appeared to be shutting down then just hang there, ( no waiting dialog as /f does not show that ) So i waited ten minutes, still no reboot.

I am at a loss, and Google is really not helping any either.

I need the TSF geniuses :)

Thanks guys for your time!

I'm getting this error message on 90% of programs I try to open. But if I keep trying it will eventually open. It doesn't happen on chrome/firefox, thankfully.

Another problem that I believe is connected to it is that I can't open a browse window. On photobucket for example I'll click "browse" and it won't open. But if I restart the browser a few times it will eventually work, just like the problem above. I had some sort of worm on my computer earlier this month. I removed it and since then ran multiple more scans (malware anti-bytes) and nothing new comes up.

Any help will be appreciated. I know this will be hard to diagnosis, but maybe the problem with the browse window might help narrow it down? It's the first time I've ever heard of that problem occurring.

A:"encountered a problem and needs to close" error messages, Can't open programs

Please avoid using IE as it only works if you purchase it and that too if its under warranty, else it might throw some or the other errors. Instead, you can try Google Chrome which never give you this sort of problem.

I get this blue screen and my laptop reboots. This occurs very frequently at times and at times the laptop runs smoothly and all of a sudden reboots.

I get this error message "IEEE802.11b WLAN Card Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close".

It started occurring ever since i have replaced the LINKSYS WAG54G router with a new version.

I have contacted Linksys several times but they just dont have a solution to this problem. They even got me to download new drivers for the router.

The funny thing is whenever i use a different router or a wired router this problem does not occur.

Linksys has suggested i update my wireless drivers by downloading new drivers from the laptop manufacturers website. I am not too sure if i should be taking this route.

Would anyone know why this problem is occurring.

For that reason I am concerned that in the last week this message appears after any restart:

Calibration did make a visible difference to colour display and since this error shows up I do not see any big difference in colour but the message is still a concern.

I have been getting a really annoying error lately every time I reboot.

I have run Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware Professional and Trend Micro OfficeScan but i still get the problem whenever I restart my computer.

Although my windows seems to be working properly after I click "don't send report" (due to restore settings?), the error message annoys me every time i restart my computer.

Hello there,

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

Hi lola678

I think your AIM problem might be more related to Earthlink TotalAccess.

But let's do some cleanup and see what happens.
You'll need to disable SpySweeper's realtime protection while we run these fixes.

* Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
Exit the program.

You can re-enable these when we are finished here.
With IE closed, run Hijack This again.
Put a checkmark on these entries and hit "fix checked":

Hi all,
I am a total Newbie so please have patience with me.
I am working mostly with Mozilla Firefox, but occasionally I go into Internet Explorer as I have got a website and it does display it different sometimes in IE than with Mozilla.
I have noticed recently that when I open IE everything seems to work fine first (the home page comes up and looks alright), but as soon as I enter anything in the search bar on the top and hit "enter", I have got this message coming up:
Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
With the Mozilla Firefox Browser everything seems ok.
Why is that, and how can it be fixed?
When I go in ->My Network Places ->View Network Connections, I have got LAN or High-Speed Internet, and there are 2 connections mentioned:
Local Area Connection2, which says: (Network Cable Unplugged, Fire...Intel(R) Pro/100 VM Network...)
Local Area Connection, which says: (Connected, Firewalled, Motorola SURFboard SB5100)
I don't know whether that has anything to do with it, but I thought I mention it.
The same problem happens when I want to use a Software I have downloaded, called "Directory Submitter", every time I want to use that the same message appears, just as "Directory Submitter has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.". I can just assume that Directory Submitter connects through Internet Explorer and that's why t... Read more

A:Message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close."

First, you did not state what version of IE you use, IE6 or IE7; and what OS, WinXP what (Pro/Home, SP2/SP3).

Second, why Firefox? Do you really need it? I ask because there are reported problems with conflicts between IE and Firefox by some users. These seem to be reported by people like you who try to use both browsers. People who use Firefox exclusively, don't see the problem.

I assume your are in business and that's why you use Directory Submitter. By the way, is it from the .COM or .ORG site? You use it as PR for a WEB site you publish, correct?

After I turned off my PC for the night, the next day I turned it on to find that all of my web browsers "stopped working". The moment I try to open Google Chrome, Firefox, or IE, they all display the message, "_____ has stopped working". the system doesn't prompt me to find a solution or anything of the sort, it simply closes the browser right after I open it, I can't even get online to find help (on a different computer at the moment).

Note: All other programs that are NOT web browsers can still use the internet, updates and downloads still work fine, I simply can't browse the web.

I have already run a complete virus scan with adaware, malwarebytes, and super anti spyware, they all say I'm clean. I am quite honestly at an impasse... please help.

a link at the top of each page.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined below. Use a USB flash drive to download and transfer the tools to the affected machine, if necessary. You might like to run the Flash_Disinfector.exe on the clean machine and the flash drive first to protect against any possible transfer of infection via USB.
