Windows XP works in safe mode freezes in normal

Q: Windows XP works in safe mode freezes in normal

After removing a number of infections using malwarebytes, spywarebot and main system PCTools my XP window with icons freezes either immediately or eventually. Tried going to setup on initial boot and putting the system back into default mode ameliorates the problem but eventually in comes back within a half hour or so.

Preferred Solution: Windows XP works in safe mode freezes in normal

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If the computer is running without freezing in "Safe Mode" but freezing in normal windows, you could try to perform a "Clean Boot." If no freezing, then methodically start adding programs until the symtpoms reappear. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Hello Everyone

A problem occured 2 days ago, my computer froze and I had to shut down manually (pressing and holding the power button). After I logged in, a few seconds later (perhaps 20-30 seconds) my computer frozed up again. The mouse cursor doesn't move and I can't get any response from the keyboard. The desktop just remains idle and unresponsive.

Whenever I log into Safe Mode (I'm using that right now to make this topic), everything works normal, no freezing or anything.

I don't have any type of Windows XP CD, so I won't be able to reinstall my OS but I was wondering if anyone had any advice where I can troubleshoot this problem. I'm using a Dell Dimension 2400 (yeah I  know it's quite old) with Windows XP SP3. Back in June 2014; I had to get another motherboard cause the previous one died and the graphics card stopped working a few weeks afterwards. Is it possible that a hardware driver is broken or corrupted? Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advice.

my specs are:

Dell Dimension 2400
Windows XP Pro SP3
Maxtor 6L040J2 40GB
Intel ® Pentium 4  3.06 Ghz
Cosair 1GB DDR 400Mhz (x2)
Intel ® 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller
SoundMax Intergrated Digital Audio

Hello everyone,
My computer was working fine yesterday. This morning when I start it, it becomes unresponsive. The mouse works on the desktop, but nothing responds when I click them. I have restarted in safe mode, and everything seems to work. I looked under my system restore and all the restore points are gone. I ran MalwareBytes and SuperAntispyware just yesterday and neither detected anything and I have not installed or downloaded within the last few days.
I have tried running error-checking on C: drive, but it fails to run when I restart. It says "Cannot open volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package." It then says to use system restore, which I cant because all points are missing. The only thing I have installed in the last week was Adobe Photoshop CS4.
I ran CCleaner yesterday as well and I think something of photoshop was flagged for cleaning, and I let it clean it... However, I restored the changes today using the CCleaner restore file to see if it fixed it, but no change.

I just tried opening Photoshop in Safe Mode and got a message saying that Liscensing for the product has stopped working and requires my computer to be restarted before it can be launched.....Error: 148:3
I suspect this might have something to do with the problem...but no Adobe program is set to run on startup....so I'm not sure why that would be bogging it down. I cannot check Task Manager during normal startup t... Read more

A:Windows 7 slows/freezes on normal startup, works in Safe Mode

In Safe Mode you can call up MSCONFIG via Start/Run or WinKey-R, and see what's starting behind the scenes. Selectively turn off a few things at a time and see what happens. You can also go to installed updates in Control Panel/Programs and Features and sort by date to see what's new from MS.

Your crash dumps are not showing any finite probable cause. In such a situation, it is better to enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

   Information
Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

I have a Toshiba A135-S4467 laptop that would freeze on the windows load screen so I replaced the hard drive after several attempts at formatting and reloading that were unsuccessful. I put in the new hard drive and completely installed windows but it still freezes at load up, I did get it to start a couple times but the CPU would peg at 100% and would freeze up after about 20 seconds. It will however start and run in safe mode.

Buttons freeze when I'm in Normal Mode. I left the computer on yesterday while i was out and it worked in Normal mode when I got home but not completely and I can't duplicate it.

So many things are wrong. Restore points were removed. Printer is off the network (Device manager shows yellow warning sign.)
Superfetch isn't running.
Mouse cursor bounces around when typing. I read I need to fix tapping but printer needs to be on network but I can't get it back on the network. Printer spool won't start.

Before coming here, I've run startup repair, scf /scannow, Combofix (not that I learned anything or that it fixed anything.) Malwarebytes, Norton scan, Trendmicro scan

I've tried msconfig no services but Microsoft, no startup items.

Not making any progress.

I was having a hard time using your link to FRST64. I kept being redirected to the home page.

Hi there to who ever may be reading.

First of all thanks for taking a look at my issue, the problem as follows :

It shuts down (ie turns off, need to manually press the power button to boot up again) when getting to windows xp desktop.

what i have tried so far:
complete reformat windows xp home

complete reformat windows xp pro

taken the battery out of the motherboard for 30 secs then putting it back in(sometimes this works and it did for a while inabling me to install some softwarelike mobo drivers then after
reboot the problem persisted)

Following that i have tried different batterys and no battery at all each not solving the issue

started in safe mode and installed service pack 3

cleaned processor and heat sink

tried different psu

tried different hard drive (with fresh install)

I originally thought it would be a power issue but i have left it on overnight in safe mode as a test and it never shut down. It only seems to shut down in normal mode! i thought it might be a software issue but i have reinstalled it with different discs and different versions.

I dont think it is a hardware issue as it doesnt turn off when in safe mode, but then i dont think its a software issue because of the multiple clean installs that i have done. So i really dont know.

Please, sombody put me out of my misery. . . . What is wrong with my computer!

Then I went into safe mode with networking. And that's all how it works now.
Please I would be really greatful if you could help me out.
So basically the laptop is functioning all fine in safe mode but wouldn't go further the " starting windows" message in normal mode.

Hi Guys,

I upgraded to Windows 7 back in December and things were going smoothly until two days ago when my computer started freezing.Mouse cursor won't move, control+alt+delete would not work as well.I basically had to turn off the power switch.

Tried system restore the next day, things ran smoothly for the next day until problems returned. Now I can run things fine in safe mode but system freezes after about 10 minutes of use in normal mode.

Also, the processor light stays solid blue all the time now (before it blinked occasionally depending on the nature of the task being performed).

Any ideas?

Hey guys:

My aunt gave me her laptop to look at.  Unforturnately, I can't seem to look at much because it keeps freezing no matter what I attempt to do.  It gets to the Starting Windows screen with the Windows logo and then the hdd light turns off and it's frozen.  Same with Safe Mode.  The startup lines start scrolling by and then it freezes up.  I tried to let Windows Repair try to do its thing and that also freezes on a black screen.  Not sure what I can do besides reload the OS?

It's a Dell Inspiron 15 (1564) laptop running or should I say, "Not running" Windows 7 Home 64-bit.  4gb's of memory.

I am at a loss here.  Do you think it's time to reload the OS?

Hello,

I have a Satellite Pro C850 1KU running Windows 7 Enterprise. When it is started in normal mode, it will load until the login page, then just reboot about 20 seconds afterwards. Over and over. The computer runs fine in Safe Mode. I have tried many different things, the recovery tools all say that the Windows installation is fine, the hard drive is in good shape and rather cool (41 C). I have tried all possible power setting combinations, have disabled all CPUs but one, stopped all programs and services in msconfig, ...

Having looke through various forums, I noticed that a frequent problem with Toshiba Satellite laptops seems to be the NEC/TOKIN capacitor on the mainboard. It dies after some time and seems to cause just the problems that I observe. There are many videos (search youtube satellite+toshiba+nec+tokin) and forum entries which describe the problem quite accurately (e.g. thread 8991 on badcaps dot net)

So before I disassemble my laptop, I have a few questions which hopefully someone has an answer to:
- Is there also a NEC/TOKIN capacitor on the mainboard of the Satellite Pro C850 1KU and could this cause the problems I have?
- Would it be in principle possible to just exchange the complete mainboard without having to reinstall Windows? Which mainboards would work, any of the C850 series (e.g. with 2.6 instead of 2.3 GHz)?

Thank you very much and best regards.

There is no malicious software.I have gone through Malwarebytes,TDSSKiller,Kaspersky, etc.Nothing was found.
It doesn't entirely freeze.I can move the cursor which usually is a blue circle.Sometimes more things like highlight icons w/ the cursor or the clock keeps going.
Sometimes when I press ctrl+alt+del and open task manager, the programs that didn't open when I clicked on them will open up.Most times pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing though.
It works fine in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking.I have disabled all start ups and every service except Microsoft ones and restarted in Normal mode.Still the same problem.
I used checkdisk and it said nothing is wrong.
There are random times where it works fine.No specific time of day.It just happens. Most times it is this way though.

A:BSOD when trying to boot in normal mode, safe mode works fine

You may need to run SFC up to 3 times for it to have a chance to repair all files.

If it won't then you can consider a Repair Install.

However be aware that factory preinstalled Win7 is one of the worst possible installs of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilties that intefere with better versions built into Win7. So I would strongly consider doing the vastly superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If you decide to try to repair you can also capture the BSOD file and post it up for one of our BSOD analysts as shown here: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Forums

Hello everyone,

I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a pentium 4 processor, yes I know, old, but it works. It is running on Windows XP Pro, version 2002 with service pack 3. I have cable internet connected to a Linksys WRT100 router. As of late, my computer has been acting a little funny. I cannot seem to browse the internet for more than 5 minutes (with either Firefox 3 or IE 8) in normal mode, but the computer shows that I am connected to the internet. I was connected via a usb wireless adaptor, but since it has been acting strange, I have removed the wireless adaptor with the software and am now connected through an ethernet cord to the router which is connected to the cable modem.

Plus, in normal mode, I am able to update services such as McAfee virus scan and Spybot, as well as remote connect to another computer, which require internet although the internet browsers say that it is not connected. I have ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, and McAfee virus scan already as well, all have not found anything. Hello everyone,

I don't know if it's the good place to post my problem, because it's not a real BSOD, but it's still a freeze.

So, here is the full story:
A week ago, I got an update to my Avast Free Antivirus. After I installed it, my Windows began to freeze something like 30 minutes after the login screen.

The problem is the following: 30 minutes after startup (I didn't time, but it's almost always after the same time), one by one my programs begin not to respond, and after a few minutes nothing works anymore. I can still move the mouse, but the interface doesn't react. The only way to shut down my computer is to do a hard shutdown.
In Safe Mode, there is no problem, I'm using SM with networking right now.

I tried to disable all the startup programs, but Avast, McAfee, and some other programs still launch themselves.
BTW, Avast works, so I don't think the problem lies in Avast itself
I don't think it's a hardware issue; I have already done memtest86, checkdisk.
I don't know if the problem lies in Avast itself, or if Avast damaged something during its update. But if you're absolutely sure the problem lies in Avast, I can try.

Here are my specs:

Intel Core i5 3210M with Intel HD Graphics 4000

GPU : Intel + AMD Radeon HD 7650M

I give you also the dm logs.

Thank you for your help.

Alright, so, last night I was in a hurry, and didn't want my laptop to take long to shut down, so I did something stupid that I never do. I shut down by holding the power button. About fifteen minutes later when I came back and turned it on, it let me log in like normal (slightly slower than normal now that I think about it) and all seemed fine. But after about a minute, it just froze. The screen glazed over as a whitish shade and my cursor became the loading circle, nothing worked. I pressed ctrl + alt + delete and it sent me to a black screen with my cursor. I tried again, and again, and again to no avail. It works perfectly in safe mode though, no problems at all. I even tried system restore, and that did not help a thing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Please excuse me if I have posted this in the wrong area, but over the past 48 hours I have had great difficulty in using my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1545. System type: 32-bit. Processor: not available. Memory (RAM): not available. I checked this yesterday and all information was provided, but not sure why it is not today.

Everytime I switch it the laptop on, I will have about 1 minutes worth of use before it completely freezes. Ctrl + alt + del do not respond which means I just have to keep switching it on and off, on and off. Everything works fine on safe mode and after checking other sites for advice, I have not had any luck.

I have tried 2 restores, which were successful, but not in fixing my problem.

I am currently an English teacher in China so my laptop is crucial for everything I do. I appreciate any feedback and help.

Many thanks,

Nick

So today I tried loading up my computer and for whatever reason, after loading up the desktop, weird things start to happen. For one, anything I try to click gives me nothing. I can't load up any programs, I can't click the start button, nothing. Second, my network icon in the bottom right (in between volume and PC issues) keeps giving me the repeating circle, saying something's loading. After a while, my screen will go black and will reappear with my task bar a different color. I can't do a ctrl-alt-delete either.

In safe mode, everything works fine. I have no idea what the problem is but here are some things I've tried already.

1. Malwarebytes says nothing's wrong.
2. I rebooted using default options from the BIOS and that did nothing.

I have no idea what this problem is or what I should do and it's starting to get really annoying.

Edit: I also just tried to do a clean boot and that fixed nothing either.

Edit 2: Also did a Diagnostic Startup and the problem was still there

Welcome to the forums!

Have you tried a system restore to a point before this started? Have you thought about a repair install or maybe even a complete reinstallation? We have many excellent tutorials here at the forums, here's a couple on how to do that if you're so inclined :

Recently purchased this all in one PC on second hand. It initially had Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Japanese OS. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit English OS after purchasing and installed the Drivers from the DVD which came along with the PC. Ran windows update till date. But got BSOD many times. Thinking of Hard drive issue, changed the hard disk first time with another used one and next time with newly purchased one.

All the time installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit English OS and installed the Drivers from the DVD which came along with the PC. Ran windows update till date. But in all 3 hard disks getting the BSOD error.

Installed Microsoft Security Essentials each time and checked for virus. Ran Dell Diagnostics downloaded from Dell website and found no issues.

Got "Session "Microsoft Security Client OOBE" stopped due to the following error: 0xC000000D" error on Event viewer many times. After searching some forums deleted MSE.

Ran the SF diagnotic utility and uploading the file for your reference.

Please help me to overcome this issue.

I started having said problem during virus removal.
I had removed multiple virus via malware, SAS, aSquare, combofix, and, I could not connect to any websites.
Via my wireless connection, windows said my signal strength was good and it was connected to the wireless network.
I tried pinging different websites like yahoo.com, google.com, etc and all my requests timed out.

So I decided to trouble shoot.
Booting into safe mode w/ networking worked fine. I was able to ping and connect to websites via Internet Explorer.
I ran SpybotS&D, and it removed a win32.agent and some sort of malware that had firewall in the name... forgot exactly what it was, and I don't have the log on hand.
Anyways, after this removal I tried again to ping website like yahoo.com, google.com, etc, and the ping worked fine.
However, I still could not connect to any websites via Internet Explorer. I tried reinstalling IE, but its the same story.
During this whole process, I have been able to use Internet Explorer succesfully only in safe mode.

Any ideas? I doubt it is a virus directly causing my problems. It's had a thorough cleaning. Maybe some left over wreckage?
I doubt its a firewall issue. CA's personal firewall is installed on the machine. I know CA antivirus is running in safe mode, I'm not so sure if the firewall does or not. I'm assuming it does.
I don't know where to even start on this. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Can't browse in normal mode, works fine in safe mode.

Hello,You should not browse in Safe Mode because your security programs do not function in safe mode which means that more malware finds its way onto your computer. This issue is related to the issue you have posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/240716/sdra64exe-uacinitdll-fakealert-vundo/ Because you have this log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Hey guys, I seem to be having trouble, and I'm not terribly inclined with laptops and computers, mine is an HP G62 laptop, and that's about as far as I know about it. The other day I went to use it, opened it up, I had 3 tabs open (google chrome), and I tried to open a new tab. All new tabs were freezing, and my itunes had frozen as well. I tried closing the laptop, hoping it would go into sleep mode, but it didn't, it stayed running. I reopened it and the screen stayed off, so I did a hard reset (holding the power button to turn it off) and started it back up. I started it in normal mode, and logged on, but after loading from the log on screen, it went to a black screen with just the cursor, and stayed there. I did another hard reset, and started it in safe mode, and now this is how I'm currently running. I've tried disabling the display drivers and restarting, that worked momentarily, but froze shortly after. Next, I tried a system restore, which did absolutely nothing, and then I ran chkdsk and, again, nothing. After all this, I decided to try uninstalling the display drivers, which, once again, did nothing. This seems to be all the info I have gathered from online, and through friends' help, there seems to be nothing left to do that may fix this problem. Anyone have any idea on where to go from here?

A:Black Screen in Normal Mode. Only Safe Mode Works.

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

In Network and Sharing Center, there is a wizard to troubleshoot connection problems. If that doesn't work, you could "set up a new connection".

Then I went into safe mode with networking. And that's all how it works now.

I have an older laptop that is running Windows XP.  This is not my main computer but I do like to use it when I do not want to use tablet or desktop.  It virtually will not browse internet in regular windows mode.  It freezes and takes forever to go from one internet site to another.  However, the internet works fine when in safe mode.  I have Malware Anti Malware Free and AVG 2015 Free.  I have run scans in both safe mode and windows mode and it does not detect anything.  I also have CC Cleaner which I run frequently.  I have downloaded Autoruns and tried to delete some startup loads using your data base.  However, many are not in your data base.  I did find some that I could eliminate on startup but not that many because if it was not in your database, I left alone.  Do you have any other suggestions I could try.  As I said, this laptop is older and not my main computer but I would really like to try and revive it so that I can at least use it sometimes.

A:Internet freezes but works fine in safe mode Windows XP

If a client comes to me not only now but, for quite a while now, I will not let them spend time, money, effort or thought on an XP machine.  For starters they absolutely should not be used connected to the Internet.
Certainly @ this point in time, if an XP machine is not working properly, just don't bother w/ it... can't be used on the Net, anyway.  As for non-Net use, still, not worth bothering w/ it.  Time to just let it go & move on.  After 15 yrs, put it out to pasture.

I'm not a Windows whiz by any means, but I'm usually able to solve the problems I run into on my machines. This one's got me stumped:

I leave my Sony Vaio VGN-FW290J, running Windows 7 SP1, running one night while I go out for some errands. On my return, the thing has crashed pretty bad (I-can't-even-move-the-mouse bad). Whatever. I do a hard restart of the computer, decline safe mode, and the thing starts up just fine. Well, it was pretty slow, actually. Windows freezes up on me within two minutes (it's still loading up startup programs during that time). I entered into a cycle of startup, hard restart, startup, hard restart, ... until I was convinced of the permanence of the issue.

I became unhappy then, since I knew something was wrong, and this computer hadn't had a real problem in about 4 years of usage.

My first thought was to do a virus scan, so I booted into safe mode and started Avast to get cracking. Two "threats" were found in a full scan: both were very old files. I removed them and I still had the same problem.

I then deactivated every single startup program except the ones I thought were absolutely necessary. No beans. I currently have these set to autostart:
Alps pointing-device driver (Tracker Pad)
HD Audio Control panel (Audio Card)
Realtek Voice Manager (Audio Card)
Microsoft Windows Operating System
ISB Utility (Battery Utility)
Catalyst Control Center (Video Card)
I'm not really sure what to do. I haven't been able to localize the crashing to... Read more

You can also do a Clean Boot. See if that helps.
