Games and videos make computer freeze

Q: Games and videos make computer freeze

Hello. I recently formatted my computer since the harddrives started to fill up quite good. And I thought it would be nice to have a fresh install again.
But now I kinda regret it...

I'm gonna give you as much info as I can here, so the post might get a bit long.

Here are my system specs directly from dxdiag:

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.8GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680
Complete DxDiag uploaded.

So I put in my windows 7 installation disk and restarted the computer. Then I completely cleaned the harddrives and istalled it. But after I had installed several updates from Windows Update and installing drivers I went on to youtube to watch a few videos.
But a few minutes in the computer completely froze until it recovered again after about 30 seconds.

I decided to look in the Task Manager to see the Processor usage, and every time it freezes all the cores spike up to 100%.
Sorry for it being in Swedish, but you can compare it to your own if you need to.

So these are the things I have done to try and fix it:
1. Defragment all the harddrives
2. Use a cmd command called "sfc /scannow" to scan for errors
3. Use the installation disks repair tool
4. Right click on the video and stop hardware acceleration(maybe poorly translated, I use chrome)
5. Go into windows safe-mode with internet. Worked perfectly there.
6. Run benchmark tests to see possible hardware problems.

Still the same. And at this time I noticed that the same thing happens when I start games since my first game was finally done on the computer.

So I keep trying to fix it and I read it might be the wireless card that can cause the problem. So reading that I remember the computer studder at times when I went from cable to wireless before I formatted the computer. So that might help you solve it

Now hopefully it isn't a hardware failure. But I also tried a program that monitor the temperature on your hardware. And my SSD got an error saying it was at 128 degrees celsius. But then I read that, that can be a standard value when it can't read the temperature properly...
I've been trying to fix this for 2 days now so I think I got everything now in this thread.
I guess it was about time to ask experts on a tech forum. And yes I have googled it alot and found alot of fourm posts, but none of them worked/was my exact problem.

Oh yeah! I just remembered now that it froze once today when just opening a regular program. Weird...

Thank you in advance!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This is the image that my friend gets when he plays a high quality YouTube video or decides to play a PC Game: http://imgur.com/e6VHY http://i.imgur.com/rqsad.jpg
The laptop then locks up and freezes with that weird screwed up mosaic.
Any thoughts on why this might be? Is it a graphics problem? CPU? Should he be re-installing his OS?

Whenever I've tried to play music, a dvd or video of any sort, or play a game my computer has been getting complete freeze ups. The problem only started around 3 - 4days ago.
I play music in Itunes, and this is where the problem started, however, I have also tried using winamp and vlc but I get the same problem. I can get anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 minutes of music before the problem occurs but when it does it locks up the whole computer, i can move my mouse around but nothing can be clicked, no keyboard commands are working (ctrl + alt + del, alt + f4 etc.). When the song freezes it will constantly loop the second of the song that it froze on but no other worrying sounds are made by any part of the computer.

If I'm watching a video I once again get between 30 seconds and 10 minutes before a problem occurs, the audio will carry on as normal, but the video will hang and thats when the whole computer freezes. Once again, no keyboard commands work, and the mouse can move but not interact.
When playing games everything is fine until i try to close the game or click (or alt + tab) away from it, then it will get caught half way between the command and freeze up the entire computer just like the other causes of freezing.

The only way I can un-freeze my computer is to turn it off at the power button or using the restart button.
I've used various anti-virus, registry cleaner, diagnostic tools etc. but nothing seems to have helped the situation, a system re... Read more

Hi there,
So here's my situation, just as recently as last Friday, I had a new machine assembled. The hardware and everything was installed by the store itself, whereas I installed Windows and all the relevant drivers for the motherboard and GPU.

The issue I am having is that any video I play will freeze the computer, regardless of format and source. When I mean any video, I mean exactly that. Whether it be YouTube, .avi, .mkv, .mp4 etc. if it's a video, it will freeze my computer indefinitely until I manually push the power button and reboot from there.

Up until now, I've tried the following:

1. Updated video drivers to latest version (Forceware 296.10). Did not help
2. Completely uninstalled 296.10 drivers using DriverSweeper and rolled back to 295.73 downloaded from the nVidia website. Still no go...
3. Installed all the necessary drivers/updates to BIOS, motherboard, chipset. Still freezing.
4. Reformatted hard disk, reinstalled clean copy of Windows. No other software, nothing other than the bare basics of what's needed. Problem STILL exists. Different media players don't make a difference, codecs don't matter at all, absolutely nothing I do makes videos work.

I took back the machine to the store that assembled it, they had a look at all the hardware and said it was working fine. They even played Flash videos for over 1 hour and the PC didn't freeze. The moment I brought it back home, it started freezing again. I'm utterly lost as to what the issue could be.

I've... Read more

Hi, hope this is the right thread to ask for help. Here is my laptop: HP dv6000 2GB RAM, Intel Mobile 1.50 GHz Windows 7 Ultimate

I bought the laptop used about a month ago and everything seemed fine. A few days later I noticed that the fan was running a lot, so I read a tutorial online and used a can of compressed air to clean out/off any dust and such. Right away the fan/computer was much quieter.

My situation now is that whenever I watch a video (Netflix, HULU or even something stored on my HD), within a minute or two the video freezes/locks up or sound and video are lagging quite a bit.

I have no indications of malware/virus and it seems everything else is mostly fine with the computer. I did the Windows troubleshooting and it recommended lowering resolution and turning off Windows Transparency. I haven't done either because I wanted to ask for help before I start changing settings.

I installed Core Temp. 1.0 about an hour ago and both Core's are running between 72-76 deg C with a Tj.Max of 85*C.

Forgot to mention that my internet speed is currently at 6.5 Mbps

I appreciate any help I can get on this.

A:Computer slows way down/videos freeze up

So an update: Was watching some Youtube videos to see how if maybe temperature would go up and sure enough it did. After about 10 minutes of watching videos, the temp starting creeping up, and then the temp hit 78*C and about a minute later the "load" monitor said 100% and that correlated with the video freezing up.

I did another sweep of the fan/fan area with compressed air. Currently the temps are in the low 50's.

Can you post some information about your computer by going to this internal link [http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links] and downloading the 'TSG System Information Utility'. This will only gather basic information on the computer such as the processor, RAM, harddrive capacity and just copy/paste it in your next reply.

Also when you say 'freeze', does the video load then all the sudden the picture freezes while the audio is still on or does the video all freeze all together (both audio and moving images)?

I posted last night asking about my slightly pink screen. I presumed that my pinkish screen was linked with the fact that my laptop computer crashes when I put a CD in and then when I turn the computer back on the screen doesn't come on at all... but surely these two problems aren't linked!
This problem has only been occuring for the past two days, but is rather debilitating!

Hi, recently my laptop has been freezing every minute or so for a few seconds, especially when I stream videos. It's very annoying and I feel like its getting worse everyday. Videos will pause for 20-60 seconds but the audio will continue to keep playing. I've ran a full scan on kaspersky but nothing was detected. It mostly happens when I click a link or when I'm streaming a video, and also when I'm scrolling down a page. I ran task manager and nothing seems to be using too much CPU. I still have 403GB of space left.

My specs are
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz

System Type: 64bit Operating System

If anyone could help me solve this problem I will greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Late at night on April 5th something got through to my computer. A window popped up and it showed a scan being ran. Some sort of warning that I needed protection for my computer. It would not let me scan with Malwarebytes or any scan program that I have. I finally went into a safemode and was able to use Malwarebytes. Here are the findings below.

But, the funny thing is my music and others things is still running smooth without any problems at the same time the freeze come. Anyone have a nice solution on what it could be? Won't start open it and try stuff, always doing it worse.

Hope someone can help me :)

A:Computer freeze in games.

This can be due to over heating. Clean out all dust in the tower with a can of compressed air, mainly all fans, and the heat sink. If you have a laptop clean out all dust out of the air vents with a can of compressed air. Keep the laptop elevated off of couch, lap and bed like surfaces, these surfaces restrict air flow and heat dissipation. Consider getting a cooling pad for the laptop. If you have a desktop keep in mine and practice good wire management inside the desktop. Cables and wires when messy can restrict air flow and heat dissipation.

Please post the make and model of your machine. If it is a custom build please post the brand and model number of the motherboard, cpu specs, graphics card model. PSU wattage and brand if it is a OEM computer or custom build.

Go into bios located your temp readings laptop or desktop. For desktop only locate your voltage readings and post all here.

If you have an OEM computer (Acer, Dell, HP, etc...) go to the manufacture of your system's website Support>Drivers look up your model number and version of Windows 32bit or 64bit and download the latest video drivers and install them. If you have a graphics card go to the manufacture of the card's website (ATI, Nvidia) look up the model number of your card at Support>Drivers and version of Windows 32bit or 64bit and download the latest drivers and install.

As the title suggests just about any game will crash. I have managed to work around this by playing in windowed mode which works for some games like saints row 4, but not for dota 2 (dota will crash no matter what I do). Also, netflix will crash the computer if I play the movies in full screen mode.
I've tried a lot of different things and sometimes when I keep my computer on for long periods of time (close to a week) saints row 4 will work just fine in full screen, but then I'll go to watch an anime in full screen (streaming) and the computer will crash. After that it will crash to almost anything that's full screen. Oddly enough I can watch twitch in full screen just fine.....

Hello all. I have been having the same problems with my desktop (a Frankenstein's monster of different parts first put together with assistance at the closest Frys store) that have spanned at least a few years. I've needed it for college and it mostly works for what I need it to do so I left it like this but would now like to once and for all solve the problem.

I'm running Windows 7 with a MSI mainboard, AMD FX-4100 CPU, 4 Gigs of RAM, currently connected to a ATI Radeon Graphics card connected to a cheap, old HP Pavilion mx50 monitor.

Okay, so the symptoms. Originally, when my computer was left to idle the monitor would shut down as monitors usually will but along with the monitor the whole system would be in a coma that I couldn't even use the off button to stop. I had to push the switch on the back to turn it off. Now it can idle for at least thirty minutes, but I think if left for an hour or two it does the same thing. Unfortunately I forgot how I managed to improve this problem.

The second problem still happens and is my major concern. When running certain functions the computer will either do the same as above or it will crash and immediately turn off the whole system. I can watch DVDs without problems for several hours and mp4s for at least twenty minutes but if I watch for longer, play Minecraft, or even watch Youtube for a significant portion of time it will crash. When it crashes like this I will usually need to wait for around ten to fifteen ... Read more

Ok, this all started when I had windows vista on my desktop computer Acer Aspire AM1641-U1521A, it was great everything was running smoothly, I was happy, but then after my mom put a password on the computer then forgot it, afterwards we got a restaurant and she moved all the internet connection to there. Since their was a tech support near by we took our password protected computer to him, then when we got it back he deleted everything and put it to windows 7, everything seemed ok until we got internet back at the house, now I downloadeded all my Mmos and played on one of them, S4 league, the FPS rate was so low and I did not know why. It wasn't the connection, I am using comcast atm. After a bit of messing around I found that the coprocessor in the Device manager had a yellow triangle on it, I tried clicking on it then the computer tried to instal new softwar but did not then it sent me to this, and the download was in this link, http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windo...ce_winvista_win7_32bit_international_whql.exe
I did it and it downloaded 4 drivers for nvidia, one of them was ethernet I recall, but after that everything was worse, the computer was slowing down a little with choppy mouse movement, and when I go on youtube videos, anything over 240-360p would cause major video lag and I think my Mmo frame rate got worse (And maybe download speed but I don't care that much). I've had this problem for about 3 years. I've replaced so many parts and i'm still getting the same problem.

so basically, during games or streaming videos, my computer might freeze sometimes.
Its a custom built computer from 6 years ago. Here's some specs.
Windows7 Ultimate 32x
AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core 6000+ 3.00ghz
4.00 gb memory (only 3.5 is usable because of 32x)
Nvidia GeForce 7900 GS

Okay so basically, the games i'm playing do not even take high end stuff to begin with (Heroes of Newerth / Left 4 dead 2 / Starcraft2)

And sometimes, it randomly freezes, the only way to turn it back on is hold down the power button to turn if off and turn it on again.

I have replaced the PSU 3x already (its a corsair 650w now. My first PSU that came with the computer was a thermaltake 500w did not even have problems unitl after 2 years.)

I have gotten more ram. (i started at 2gb and now i'm at 4gb)
I have ran many scans and everything seems to be alright but my computer still freezes.

And i have gotten more fans cause i thought it wasn't cool enough.

But i discovered something. Is it possible that my computer isn't getting enough energy from the outlet? Here is a speedfan picture

My temp is normal and never ever goes past 81c even while playing and is 60c at idle.

But the voltage on the 12v line is REALLY disturbing me. Is it possible that, that is the problem?
And sometimes it alternates between 7.44v and 9.50v but it never goes higher than... Read more

A:Computer Freezes during games or streaming videos

Hi Icehism,

Any number of faults could cause this issue, the PSU might not output the power it needs, drivers can stop working, devices can stop responding due to hardware/software faults, it can basicly be anything.

I would recommend you to take a look in the eventlog (Start > Search > eventvwr.msc > Hit enter) under the systems log (and the other ones aswell for that matter) and see if you find any reoccuring faults at all, if so, paste them here. And also check around the time it last happened, see if any error reports were made.

If you don't feel comfortable doing that, you could export the log and attach it to your next post for us to look at.

My first time posting to a forum, as I usually just read around.

Hi all, I have read various forums and googled around and cannot figure out why my computer freezes when playing games.

My computer has frozen on Total War Rome 2 since the fresh windows install. Before, it froze on BF4, Starcraft 2, Assassins Creed Black Flag, Civilization 5 (Dx9 and Dx11) and a few others. This is a new build from February and began freezing suddenly about a week ago (4/26ish).

When I say "freeze" i mean the computer completely locks up, I cant tab out or CTRL-ALT-DEL and the mouse just hangs. I have gotten the BSOD 1-2 times but freezing is much more common.

My specs:
AMD FX 8350 - black edition
GIGABYTE GTX 770 4gb (furmark - 4600 points)
2x 4gb G-Skill
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
650W consair PSU

I have tried:
Fresh install of windows - Fully updated
GPU Stress test (1080p Furmark - min 30c max 72c)
GPU drivers are up to date.
memtest86 - 4 passes on each stick
change settings to "power saver"

I am stuck and hopefully these debugger reports can help me. Thank you to anyone reading this.

A:Computer freeze when playing games

Hello,

Seems the dump files are not in there. Go to this folder: C:\Windows\Minidump, check if there are any files in there.

If not, follow this Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD to make sure it is configured properly.

Other than that.

memtest86 - 4 passes on each stick

You want to run memtest for atleast 8 passes. Preferably over night.

If your useing a onboard video solution, then the biggest upgrade would be adding a video card, otherwise make sure you have enough memory.

Hi everybody first of all ive got to say: sry for my bad englisch but im from germany and so my mothertongue isnt english =)

So here comes my problem:
When im startin playing Games on my Computer i get freezes after some time
All i know is that i have in COD ghosts about 20mins in bf4 about 15mis and in my heavilly modded skyrim i have 1-3minutes, until the crash/freeze comes
Mostly there isnt a report and its only hanging. Screen is on and it seems that run all components. I must switch the power button of and press it again because theres now reaction. Now yesterday i got 2 crashes with the 0x101 BSOD (in Skyrim) but for me that cant be because my processor is 2months old and the problem is just since sunday. On that day i cleaned my Graphicscard and ram and i added two HDDs. They are removed again because i thougt they might make any of my components would overheating. but that wasnt the mistake. Ive read about of 100 posts in many forums and made every test.

2x4Gb kingston Ram is ok
FX 8350 should be ok too
HD 6870 is ok too but with the fans on 100% i reach 75 degrees -> i got turned it up because of 90? on 58%
HDD is ok
Drivers and Windows is on newest Stage
System new since January
Motherboard shouldnt be anything i dont know why (Asus M5A87)

So and here my suggestion comes: my Psu (550w lc-power lc6550 super silent v2.2) is not that high quality and so i think, that this psu cant hold my system running when everythings is used 100%
i turned they vcore a little b... Read more

The problem that I encounter is random 10 -15 sec freeze of my monitor screen during the period of which I can still hear the sound of the game but I cannot move nor do anything. After the initial 3-5 sec of the freeze period, the screen turns black for 5-10 sec and then goes back to normal at the point of which I can play again. During the freeze period, my internet connection seem to be stopped because after the freeze I have the "waiting for server" window pop up. Hello guys!

I'm having some major problems with my computer. I was playing a game (stronghold kingdoms), opened a battle report to see the battle, and my computer froze.Mouse wouldn't move, ctrl+alt+delete wouldn't work.
Only solution was the reset button. When i reset the computer same thing happened when i tried opening the game. I tried it many times, always the same thing. Computer froze. First thing i thought that it had overheated (was running for about 14 hours straight, and it is an old pc) , so i left it for a few hours to cool down. After i came back, i opened a movie, and the computer froze. Not right away, after a few seconds. I tried again, the computer would always freeze, some times not at the same point, but it would freeze at some point. (most of the times when a scene changed or i forwarded the movie.)
At some point, computer would freeze most of the times at the windows loading screen.
Tried restroring the computer a few days back, nothing changed.
Installed an anti-crash program, still nothing, scanned disk for errors, nothing.
Opened the computer in safe mode, still froze at some point.
I tried restoring the computer 2 months back, but the computer froze when 1/5 of the process was left. When i rebooted the computer, it would not go past the Ai Series screen where it froze (the screen before the windows loading screen).

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Sorry for the long post

A:My computer restarts whenever i play games or watch videos?

Hello, and welcome to the forum. First off, a common problem is the PSU being underpowered for the hardware you have in your system. If it was a custom built or you built it, i would advise you to post your hardware in the PSU section and see see what they think, also do this if you upgraded any part of your computer recently. If it was a store bought (dell, hp, ibm, etc.) then you should not have this problem. If this does not work out then you can also try to go to the HiJackThis section and post a log (intructions are posted there).

Can you see the POST screen / BIOS prior to loading Windows? Or is there no signal at all?

If you can see POST / BIOS but lose signal as Windows loads - then that's interesting, as the recovery/safe mode uses the generic VGA driver.

The fact that the PC kept freezing coupled with the loss of signal suggests that either the card, or power supply may be faulty.

Hi guys,

I am having problems with computer freezing when playing games. I am guessing it's the graphics card Nvidia GeForce GT 220. Specs are:

Motherboard: Gigabyte EP43T-UD3L
CPU: Intel Dual Core E6500
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 220
System: Windows 7, 64 bit

So the freezing happened 3 times so far after playing game for like 30 mins. It's not the blue screen but just when it freezes the speakers just like play that zzzzzzz sound and the monitor turns off. I guess because it does not receive any signal from the graphics card. Also at that point I can just turn it off by holding the power button. Then immediately if I turn it on it powers on until that motherboard screen and then just restarts and so on and on, so I have to turn it off and wait a couple of minutes and then turn it on. Then it's all normal.
Anyone can help?
Thanks

A:Computer freeze in games Nvidia GeForce GT 220

That sounds like overheating.

Can you check to see if the fan is working on the 220 card?

Also try running the system with the side(s) of the case removed to see if that improves things.

That would also be a good time to look and see how much dust has accumulated inside.

Since I purchased my computer two years ago, I've been having problems with the occasional crash when playing games. Over the past couple of months, the problem has been getting a lot worse, and my computer will crash/hang constantly when playing anything, including WOW, Rome: Total War, and Civilization IV. In addition to that, watching videos online, as well as on Windows Media Player also can result in crashes. I've even experienced full hangs when opening Microsoft Word or burning a DVD.

I've done a full MEMTEST and it found no errors. In addition to that, I believe my video and sound drivers are fully updated, and I've even tried plugging in a new graphic's card with no success. I have also cleaned out the dust from the inside of my computer. When I first experienced this problem, I formatted my computer and reinstalled everything, which also did not help solve my problem.

Hey, im having the most annoying problems. Fresh install for windows 7 ultimate x64, never experienced problems like this before. So whats happening, first off when i went to install windows 7 it took 6 times to get an install without problems. Secondly now that ive got a good install, im experiencing numerous problems. I've had 3 bsod's and a few times a day im experiencing crashes like i haven't seen before. The whole computer freezes. i cant even turn num lock on my keyboard and worst of all i cant even click the restart button i actually have to turn it off at the mains. i normally experience this when playing a game, but non of my components are overheating, i think it could be my hard drive as i had the problems installing software on previous windows installation.

Any idea's how to fix this?
