I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Using Office 2007, I can save files, Word/Excel, on my laptop. But I can not save to the network server. When I try to save to the server, a file is created with no information in it, and I received an error message that "file was not saved". I can paste and copy the file to the server. Had a local IT guy look at it and was unable to fix the problem. Don't know what to do next. Any thoughts?

When I try to open a 2007 Word or Excel document I recieve as an attachment in Outlook 2003, I get the following message:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed". Office 2007 compatibility pack was installed and it still did not work.

I then uninstalled Office 2003, uninstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack and then I ran CCleaner to clean up the registry. I updated my OS (currently has Windows XP SP3) with all updates, reinstalled Office 2003, installed Office 2003 SP 3 and then reinstalled the Office 2007 compatibility pack.

I still get the same message when I try to open an Office 2007 attachment in Outlook 2003.

OS is Windows XP SP3 fully updated
Office 2003 SP 3 fully updated

Any suggestions?

I have a 32 gig flash drive on which is an MS Excel 2007 file with all my passwords, serial numbers etc.

Last week I purchased a new HDD and successfully installed Vista Home and MS Office 2007 but when I click on the Password File on the flash drive, I get a message that "Excel cannot open the file .............. .xlsx due the file format or extension being invalid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that file extension matches that of the file format.

I have tried opening it in MS Word and other similar programs but no joy.

I downloaded the MS Compatability Pack but nothing................

Any ideas on how I can get this important file to open properly using Excel?

Good day!
May I ask another way how to resolve my file problem,
"excel cannot open the file <filename>.xlsx because the file format or file extension is not valid. verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
I already try the "Open and Repair" method of MS Excel 2007 and still cannot open the file.
I cannot change the extension by renaming it. (I'm using Win7)
I already checked the associated file extension on control panel.
Thank you in advance!

What version of Excel do you have?  Usually that error comes from Excel 2002.  You can upgrade to 2003 (MS Office 2003) at Amazon for $50 or less, and then download the free 'fileconverters.exe' from Microsoft, which enables an older MS Office to read the later files.
I know this, because it happens to me all the time, what happened to you.  So finally I took the plunge and upgraded to MS Office 2003, on all my machines.
The upgrade will accept all your customizations, macros, etc. so the interface looks the same, post upgrade, because it will import all your Normal.dot settings.  Difference is, that 'fileconverters.exe' will work in 2003, but not 2002.
.xlsx is Excel 2007 and later (secure, the extra 'x') format.  So I don't see how you'd get that error if you're really using 2007.  The only other possibility, is that someone password protected it, yet somehow you're not getting the password prompt.
I guess it's also possible that the file was generated by some other later version of MS Office which prohibits 2007 from reading it, but I can't see why.  This is just a very wild guess.

It would be really great and really appreciated if you could help me with a problem. I am unable to open an excel 2007 file in which I have stored examination results for a class of over 140 students.

When I click on the file I first get this message:

"Excel found unreadable content in "2.1 Marks.xlsx". Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes.

I can click on yes or no. When I click on yes, i get the following message:

"Excel can not open the file "2.1 Marks.xlsx" because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file"

Then I have to click on "OK".

How can I open this file to see my data???? If even I could open it once and print it off that would be enough.

When I started my computer this morning Windows ran a disk check on my back up flash drive (K:\). When I tried to open Outlook in MS Office 2007 I got the following error message:

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file K:\Personal\Email Addresses Backup.pst is not a personal folders file."

This has happened before so I tried what I've done before. (1) I've tried to repair MS Office using the program cd but that hasn't helped. (2) I tried starting MS Office while holding the Ctrl key so that I could get to the Repair command in Help but that didn't work either. (3) I ran scanpst.exe on the Backup.pst file and it repaired it. That allowed me to open Outlook and over 1,500 emails began to download (from my ISP's server I guess).

I suspect that Outlook is using the backup file as its primary source for my Contacts (individuals and distribution lists) and wonder if anyone can help me get those items into the Outlook program itself. Last time time this happened I received a message saying that the K:\Personal\Email Addresses Backup.pst file wasn't available but the program ran anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unable to open MS Outlook 2007 - Please Help!
Hi All,

Would really appriciate any help I can get with the following!

I am unable to open Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. I keep getting an error message everytime I try to open the application. The error message is:

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file C:\Documents & Settings\my name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit Outlook and all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the Inbox repair tool, see Help."

I located the Inbox repair tool and the Scanpst.exe file, however, there is no "C:\Documents & Settings\my name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst" file anywhere on my hard drive. I performed a search of my hard drive for any *.pst files, and nothing displayed. Is this file named something else for Outlook 2007?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

This is a D630 newly formatted Dell laptop and the user has had it about a month. Yesterday she noted that opening any Office 2007 program (but particularly Word) was very slow. I checked it out, and noted that in the bottom left of the Word document, when first opening Word it said " Contacting C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office..... for information

Outlook said the same thing.

Other users that started at the same time as she did and using the same model of laptop (and same image on the laptop) are fine and not experiencing this problem.

I disabled antivirus and all add ons, no change.
I ran diagnostics, which found one issue (that it did not name) that it said it fixed, but no change
I took out the printer drivers, no change
I repaired office, no change
I checked for any recent updates, nothing since June 19th. She has the latest Office updates (inc SP2)
I checked she didn't have something strange in the TCP/IP bindings.

I recently purchased a HP 530 laptop for our soccer club that came pre installed with Vista. During use of outlook, Excel etc it came up with a message asking for activation key & that we had 20 uses left to enter it (I presumed this was a trial version & activation code to be purchased). After 5-10 uses I decided to install Office 97 which I still had lying around from an old PC. This installed OK but the message was still appearing.

I then uninstalled Office 97 via add/remove programs & then did likewise for anything that mentioned office 2007 (I didn't do the actual uninstalling but am advised there were 4-6 office 2007 variants uninstalled). I then went to load office 97 back in but no go. It goes through the usual install process, enter key, select location to load (prog files/microsoft office) & then select type of install required (typical) & then the features (have selected all & just the basic office install).

Then it goes to the actual install process but just sits there with the bluey/green coloured screen with Microsoft Office 97 written at the top but goes no further.

I have checked add remove programs again & no mentions of office are listed.

I have followed the following fix I was advised about -

Just bought a new laptop with Windows7 64bit installed-my first exposure to Windows7. I had Office 2007 installed on my old Dell 32 bit machine. I had also recently pruchased Office 2010 and installed that on my new machine.

Now, when I try to open those 32bit 2007 files with 64bt 2011, Iget an error message that "no picture file is available", or words to that effect. When I try to "open with", the only option displayed is "Microsoft Office" with an icon that looks like a picture file. When I try to browse to the proper office program(Excel, for example), there are none of teh Office suite programs displayed, only "Microsoft Office".

I can navigate seperately to the proper progran, Excel, etc., and drag the file into the application, and it opens, and all seems to work OK. I "save as" the proper application file, but it still will not open with double-click on the file name.

I have not seen this particular item in the forums and would appreciate very much some help in fixing this issue.

Hey All,

Here is my issue. The Company we consult for has not transitioned all of the way to Office 2007. We have a number of machines that still have Office 2003. Compatibility Pack works on almost all issues.

Current issue is one of our users received a PowerPoint 2003 that has embedded PowerPoint 2007 files. When the user opens the PowerPoint 2007 file Office 2003 shuts down. He has to download the 2007 file to his desktop.

From what I can see this is because the file conversion process shuts down Office 2003 before attempting to open the PowerPoint 2007 file.

Another issue that may be complicating the error is we had to run a Fixit patch from Microsoft that was causing Excel, Word and PowerPoint to be scanned which caused long opening times. I don't remember the KB article for that one at the moment but will find it if I need to.

Thanks for any help in advance.

On my Win7 PC I have open office and on my WinXP Laptop I have Office 2007. Both have one major problem: the spell-checker does not work regularly for English and does not work at all for other languages, e.g., French, Spanish, or German.

I did read other threads regarding this problem and I did go through the routine of Tools-option-writing aids; and marked "check spelling as you type." I also have my abc on the menu bar checked and the adjacent ABC is underlined with a red wavy line (which means the spell-checker is active).

The problem is that when I activate the Eng language in my task bar and type a wrong word, it will be marked with a wavy red line-- which means my spell checker works for English. Now while I still have English on my language bar, if I type a word in Spanish, the spell-checker doesn't work because the foreign word is not marked with red-wavy line. If I change the language in my task bar to Spanish and write a wrong Spanish word, again the spellchecker doesn't seem to work.

Anybody has any idea what seems to be the problem?

I greatly appreciate your help.

I had several spreadsheets open, including a fairly large one with 10 tabs and large tables of data. The file itself is 3.5MB.

I was working on the file, and I might have accidentally hit Ctrl-Z -- not sure. Suddenly the spreadsheet window vanished. No sign of my spreadsheet anywhere. The other spreadsheets were still open.

I tried opening it again but nothing happened. I exited Excel and it asked me if I wanted to save the changes to the spreadsheet, so Excel apparently still had it open. I saved.

Now if I try to open the spreadsheet, excel works for a minute, then stops. It says "Opening spreadsheet.xlsx" with the progress bar, then that clears as if it had finished opening the file. But the file isn't open.

Any guesses what happened? Is there any way to recover this file??

Additionally, Office XP must be updated with the following three updates that were released after SP3:

917153 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917153/ ) Description of the update for PowerPoint 2002: July 11, 2006
917347 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917347/ ) Description of the update for Word 2002: July 11, 2006
To verify that these updates are installed for Office XP, follow these steps, as appropriate your operating system."
Since you just are having problems with Excel, make sure you have everything updated.
However, if you do have all the updates, there are several good suggestions in this thread:
Good luck!

My end user is unable to open attachments with .dwg file ext. from outlook 2003. I installed a program called cadwizviewer. User still gets an error message. see attached screen shot. I have already completed the uninstall\reinstall ritual with no change in results

A:Solved: unable to open attachment with .dwg file ext.

That doesn't look like a format error, more likely a permissions issue.

Hi All,

I have Office 2007 installed in my PC...plan to install another office software which one shall i go for Open Office.org or Office 2007.

Which is better between this 2?Can open office such as Ms Word file can open all existing Word document for MS word 2003,2007 and 2010?

A:Open Office VS Office 2007

In order to answer that question we would need to know what you define as "better". For instance, if your main consideration is price then OpenOffice is better since it is free to download. However, if you need the ability to create and run VBA macros, then Office 2007 is better since OpenOffice doesn't support VBA.

sorry this is probably a really dumb question and I need help with it.

I have downloaded a few updates and saved to disk.

The files will not unpack and execute.

Under properties file type is just file, not .exe.

Whats going on?

Are they simply loosing the .exe tag when passing through my firewall?

The files come from reputable sources ie zonealarm.

I haven't had this trouble before.

Thanks for any help

A:Solved: Unable to open Zonealarms update file

I am using XP sp3
the downloaded files are for xp.
