Robocopy wildcard woes

Q: Robocopy wildcard woes

Uploaded the 3 working files, basically it is a script that closes outlook and saves any drafts and will then backup user profile including .pst that would be otherwise locked. Exclude.txt should be exclude.rcj but its a non allowed filetype

My problem is when I try and use %username% in the source or destination in the job file (.RCJ) it will give me a message along the lines of

The file was sitting on my desktop (reason for the first part of directory)

invalid source destination C:/user/kriern/desktop/robocopy/user/%username%/

rather then just using the source i specify of user/%username%

This works when i implement it in a .bat instead of a job file why does it stop working?

Bat files have a 2000ish character limit and i do not want to run into issues when i get more and more specific with my exclusions

I would love to be able to just throw it on users computers without changing anything and procced to use windows scheduler to run it

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

How can i tell robocopy to exclude a certain final folder, with the folder above changing.
I.e in c:\users\USERNAME\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\WER

I don't want to copy any WER contents, however the USERNAME section of the path obviously changes depending on what user account it is currently backing up... can i use a wildcard at the USERNAME section or how would i do this?
robocopy \\$compname\c$\users\$tname \\destination\$tname /E /ZB /COPY:DAT /XJ /TEE /R:1 /W:1 /MT:10 /XD \\$compname\c$\users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER.
Help would be muchly appreciated...

A:Robocopy Wildcard /XD

Hi Tarrley,
/xf could excludes files that match the specified names or paths. Note that
FileName can include wildcard characters (* and
?). Now that there is not all the files in the directory. You could use /xf command to exclude specific files.

simple Testcase: two directories named "from" and "to" below the working directory.
"from" contains:
when I run
robocopy from to /XF *.asm.*
I would expect that bla.asm and bla.txt are copied, since the wildcard demands a dot before and after the "asm". Instead, bla.asm is also excluded. Why is that?

I'd like to use Robocopy (I'm using Xcopy now) to copy everything from the 'current' folder. It appears that Robocopy absolutely has to have a path of some sort to correctly work. A:Robocopy - Wildcard to copy everything from current source directory

Hi Sandy,

It's true ROBOCOPY doesn't handle wild cards, but what you're after is still possible:

Say I want this:

C:\temp> robocopy *.* c:\temp2\

I'll get the error you get - "No Destination Directory Specified"

BUT, if you try this:

C:\temp>  robocopy c:\temp\ c:\temp2\

ROBOCOPY will work and do what your after. Quotation marks can also be used in the above path references.

I suppose one of the reasons for the lack of wildcard support is the fact that ROBOCOPY actually works to exclude files types later with the /XF switch (such as "/XF *.mp3"). More here.

Hope this helps,

I am trying to edit the permissions of folders that are in folders that are named differently. I am doing cacls commads and icacl commands

The following works:

cacls c:\test\\Secure /T /E /G "Domain Admins":F
This doesn't work:

icacls c:\test\\Secure /grant "__Project Managers":(OI)(CI)(WO)
The problem is that I can't use "\\" to apply the script to all directories in C:\test.
Is there a way to put a wildcard inbetween the "\\"?

Howdy everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a wildcard character for when searching via Metro search? If I just input a partial word, it will bring up results with that text in it, but what if I want to use a wildcard phrase within it.

For example - I want this type of search:

"Bo* Builder Corporation" - It will not generate any results, even though I know there's a document titled "Bob Builder Corporation"

Thanks for any help!

i have a problem using DIR command with wildcard. In my directory i have files ???08*.txt and ???10*.txt.

If i type:
DIR ???08*.txt

But not all rvi10*.txt files are listed, only selected ones.

What could be the problem ?

Thanks in advance

A:DOS wildcard ? not working correctly

???08* should not match rvi10*
Are you sure there are three letters before the numeral 1?
Open a Command Prompt, type these three commands, then copy and past the results:
Dir *.txt
Dir ???08*.txt
Dir ???10*.txt

To copy from the Command Prompt:
Right click the title bar
Point to Edit
Click Select All. This highlights everything
Press Enter. This copies to the clipboard.
Click in the reply window, press CTRL+V

I am burning a disk of our manual. The manual is about 40 directories and all contain PDF files. In one directory is "main menu.pdf". This PDF has built in hyperlinks to other parts of the manual that point to different directories. My question is regarding burning this manual to a cd. I wanted to create a shortcut to "main menu.pdf" on the root of the cd. Since not all cd rom drive letters are identical, is it possible to use a "wildcard" in the "target" and "start in" in the shortcut? I.e. "cd-rom-drive-letter\directory\main menu.pdf"

Does anyone know if wildcard characters will work when allowing/blocking specific sites using Vista Parental Controls? Here is the situation: I would like to allow all content from myspace.com to be displayed. However, it seems that each photo on this site has a different URL, something like http://XXXX.ac-images.myspacedn.com, where the XXXX can be anything. Short of entering each URL one-by-one, is there an easier way to allow these to be viewed?

Hey everyone, I'm in a situation where I need to search for text in my document with words that have several possible alternatives - and for that I need to use a logical OR between them. If I'd used a Google search syntax for example, it would have been easy - e.g. "having a headache OR migraine", but in Word I don't know how to do it, and could not find anything about this in the Word Help. Can anyone advise me how to do this? Anticipated thanks!

A:Logical OR in Word wildcard searches

As far as I know, you can't do logical searches in Microsoft Word. I checked OpenOffice. It doesn't have that capability either.

I have tried a number of arrangements to which i think might work - unfortunately didnt work.

1 Art Support Dude [Formula]

2 Tech Support Guy [Formula]

what i want to do is come up with a formula which will pick up the word "support" . If i do it in the find function i.e. *support* it does pick that cell up.

If i were to insert that into a formula say:

If(A1="*support*", "This works", )

it somehow does not work with that arrangement. I think its just the syntax problem so i am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Also, if you can shed some light on the ~ wildcard. What does it actually do?

My Form accesses a query to return a dataset from 2 tables.
There are almost 1000 rows returned, and I have the usual navigation buttons along the bottom.
So if I want to retrieve a row from the middle, it takes quite some time to get to it using these buttons.
I would like the ability to enter a wildcard search in one of the key fields.
I know I can use a parameter query like “Like "*" & [Search text] & "*"”,
but I don’t think this syntax will work in my scenario.

Perhaps a popup window could be displayed with all matches, and the user could then select
the row required, and control then returned to the main Form, with all the other fields populated ?

Is this possible in Access 2003 ?
I have only had basic training, but nothing like this !

A:Access : Wildcard search from a displayed dataset

grinder, you can do what you want in a few diferent ways, the most efficient is to use "Find" Combo Boxes or use VBA to set the Form's Filter.

And it's possible to use a wildcard in the path, like %Program Files% or %Windows%. Please note, if a program uses this method to bind to a UDP port, you might be able to use the netstat command and other troubleshooting tools to determine which UDP
port is being used, and then add that port to the exceptions list.

System is an old Emachines T3092 with Athlon 3000+ processor and 2 gig ram running Windows 7 Ultimate Professional Media Center 6.01.7600 as reported by PC Wizard 2010. I run Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and Peer Guardian. My C: drive is indexed (Local Disk C: Properties has "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" checked "Compress this drive to conserve disk space" is unchecked.
To make a long story reasonably short, I used to use Windows XP Pro. I do some video file conversions and used to use, in the XP search box, *.* This star dot star search would allow me to find all the files on my C: drive. I had my file search show details ( not just icons) so I could find very large files that I may have forgotten about and I would delete them to save disk space. I find that this *.* search does not work in Win 7. All I get is see more results. I never get a list of all files on my C: drive. Question is.... Is there a way to have Win 7 do the same thing as the old Win XP file search for all files (star dot star)? I have talked to another person at work that has the same issue and used to do the same *.* search in XP and they have no idea why it doesn't work. I have Googled and find no answers. Hi all,

I'm using excel 2003 and trying to find out if there is an easy way of using data available in multiple sheets without putting in each sheet's name individually.

For example, each 'customer' has 2 sheets within a workbook, identified by a 'customer' number.
eg. sheets for customers 123, 345, 789:
D123 / X123 / D345 / X345 / D789 / X789

I'm actually using the function DCOUNT at the moment, with each 'customer' having their own workbook. When I use the DCOUNT function, EACH CUSTOMER'S workbook needs to be open, which is a pain. (and it craps itself if they're not open)

by using the two sheets for customers (D and X) is there a way to search for D* (like a wildcard which would only use sheets D123, D345 and D789, but not X123, X345 and X789) within the DCOUNT function? Something like:

I have a Word 2007 manuscript with headings styled as heading1.

If the line had no style, I could probably use the wildcards ^13*^13 in Find and Replace. However, since the line is a different style from the body text before and after it, the first ^13 is not found.

Any ideas how I can do this? Please?

Hi there,

I want to use ROBOCOPY to move any file that is older than 30 days.
I've tried this command but it seems to move the file anyway, even though the file is only 4 days old:

robocopy * C:\b2d C:\archive /mov /minage: 01-04-2011

From "/minage: 01-04-2011" i thought it would only move files that are at least 30 days or more old. But this seems to move everything.

Can anybody explain why this is happening? Is it because i used a wildcard on files, will that not look at the file age?

I am runing  window 7 32bit.  I run  robocopy to backup  files and dirs  ? I noticed lately that the process is coping files that are not subject to copy, ie the source and target files are exactly the same ? I use the /mir robocopy

When  roboopy copies a file from the source to the target, it will tag the copy in the log, ie ?newer? ?new files? ?older?   - etc ? in this case there is no tag on the copy log  and the summary at the end of the job reports all the source
being copied.

I have windows 7 on other computer and this  operation works  correctly on those computers  ? the only difference were this is not working it seems that version of windows 7 has fix  KB2639043 installed.

I went  as far as to write a program to show the 64 bit time stamp (both the modified and create times) and an compare them  on the source and target files and they are EXACTLY the same (the file size is also the same in both files)

Lastly, I tried ?synctoy? and that ?did the right thing? ? so there is some sort of bug with robocopy  ? How can I report this issue?

I am reporting a bug with the program robocopy.  My system is Windows 7 32bit.
The bug was introduced when hotfix kb3125574 was applied.

The bug seems to be that now, robocopy, is using the "access time" of the source
file to determine if the file is to be copied to the target.

Every copy that is executed by robocopy in annotated in the robocopy log with
the tag "new file" "newer" "older" "changed" ... etc.  With this bug, the copy
is noted in the log, but the tag (field) is blank

I was able to duplicate this, the console session is attached.

This bug has rendered robocopy useless.

We are looking to migrate a SQL database to a new server. The database is for an imaging software and has pointers to the images. We are going to move the database in the next week or two. Are you migrating to a server that will be running the same software? Why not use an SSIS package? That way, you can migrate the complete database to the new server and just point your programs as necessary.

2. if I execute the robocopy by the Planned Activity (by manually Excute or automatically at the planned time) the robocopy is done correctly but the log.txt file is not created or updated.

I did both on W7 Professional 64bit and on W8.1 64bit but no difference.
Could someone help me to understand why the difference of results manually and via Planned Activity ?
Thank in advance.

I don't use Robocopy or Planned Activity but it might perhaps be related to the current directory when the bat file is executed. If so, the other log file should be somewhere on your system and you could search for it.

I mean when you manually run the bat file you get a certain "current directory", but in the other scenario you get another directory. You can try to include a path for the log parameter or move to a certain directory with the cd command in the bat file, before the robocopy command.

I haven't tested RichCopy on Win7 but I have tested the Robocopy Gui and it works fine.

EDIT: I just downloaded and installed RichCopy and it appears to be working fine in Win7.

Within ROBOCOPY i need to write a script that will compare one folder to the other. The differences will be copied to a third folder and after copied to a third folder be copied back to the second folder.

Compare Folder 1 to Folder 2. Differences in 1 to 2 get copied to Folder 3 and after copied it will be copied to folder 2.

Anyone have any ideas?

A:RoboCopy question

Hi and Welcome!
May be better in the development section of the forum, as that is for scripting.
Click the red triangle next to your post and ask for it to be moved.
Kind Regards

Hi all, quick question.

I have used Robocopy to back up all my photos etc. for yonks, set it so that it mirrored by files on my main laptop. I have since had the need for faster and bigger storage and so have invested in a NAS. Awesome.....BUT...

when I run my script it no longer detects that a copy of the file already exists - it thinks every file is 'newer' and so it copies everything again (not funny given it's 50Gigs!)

My script consists of several lines like this...it's very simple(!)..

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\my pictures" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\pictures" /mir /xd *.lrdata

robocopy "c:\Users\Steve\Modo" "\\LS-XHLA97\backup\sr-backup\Modo" /mir

Any ideas? Or suggestions for another way of doing this type of backup?

Many thanks

I've been using Robocopy for a while now and I have found it to be a simple and mostly efficient tool to mirror contents from one drive to another, and I've created a couple of batch files to simplify typing in parameters, like "AF ? ?" to copy my data files from one drive to another.

The thing is, for the last two days my data contents have been mirrored to my HDD partitions and a USB device absolutely fine - only a few files have been modified each time and I can rest assured that the contents are identical. The whole process has only taken a few moments.

But last night, the clocks went back and then earlier today I ran Robocopy once again to mirror my data contents. The HDD copy went without a hitch, but when running it to mirror contents to the USB device it started to recopy EVERYTHING over to it, naming all the files "Older"! What's more, I check the "modified" date/times on both sides and they're identical! I can only assume that the change in the clock from yesterday is the cause, and something unique to FAT32 file format (which the USB is).

The least I want to do is not to copy files with an older timestamp on top of new ones (if that's what's happening) so is there a way I can still use /MIR and use the /XO (exclude older) switch as well?

Well, I'm trying the /XO switch, and it seems to have worked so far.
