Missing File gives error messages

Q: Missing File gives error messages

Every time I restart my computer, I get the error message "PRISMCFG.EXE - Entry Point Not Found." This has been coming up for a long time.

From what I gather, this is related to my modem in some way. I have Orange Broadband, though when I got it, it was called Freeserve (I think).

Is there anyone that could lend a hand? It's only an error message and so isn't that pressing, but any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Missing File gives error messages

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG....
To download HJTsetup.exe from SpyKiller To Download HijackThis go to the following at the File Repository
Click on the button for Download to the right of HijackThis Self Installer:

Save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialog.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit Edit then Select All then click Edit and then click Copy doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply. DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
A security expert with a gold shield to the right of their name should take a look at your log - please be patient.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. I've spent many frustrating hours trying to figure this out.
I have a Dell Inspiron M5030, Windows 7, 64-bit OS. Three days ago my computer blue screened but I couldn't catch the error message before it shut down. It seemed to work fine after that so I'm not sure if it's connected to the current issue. Two days ago I started getting error messages when using Yahoo and AOL instant messengers - "CLayoutHostWnd-Tooltip: YahooMessenger.exe - System Error    The program can't start because api-ms-win-downlevel-shell32-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." I did try to uninstall Yahoo but got the message "An error occured when trying to remove Yahoo Messenger. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove Yahoo Messenger from the Programs and Features list?" I clicked Yes but it wasn't removed and the same thing happens when I try to uninstall any program. I get a different error message when trying to run my webcam - "The program can't start because AVICAP32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." After a while, I couldn't hear the sound in videos online and the videos restart themselves and now music files won't play with Windows Media Player and I get the message "Server execution failed."

I think my husbands computer has a virus.   It is running windows 7.
It is so slow it is pretty much unusable.  He tried to update iTunes and received a message saying a file was missing (he didn't write down what it was).  It doesn't look like his windows updates are working.  He is now finding emails sent to all his outlook contacts going out that he didn't write with questionable links in them.
The virus protection he uses is ESet.  We tried to run malwarebytes but it is going so slow we stopped it.  It had been running for about 26 hours and didn't appear to be moving anymore at all.
Can the programs that someone will hopefully tell us to run to find the problem be run in safe mode?  Do you have to be connected to the internet to run them?  It seems to run a bit faster when not connected to the internet.
Hopefully someone can help us.

I have recently ran into a most interesting problem. I have missing text on my desktop, in folders, and in the Start Menu. I assumed that I had a virus of some kind so I used DBAN on my drive. I actually used it three times and then re-installed windows XP Pro SP3. However in the morning (after my computer does it's standard 3am full virus scan) I am having the same problem. It seems that the only way to correct the problem is to force shutdown my computer and reboot.

Please note: That when I noticed this problem it was actually occurring on all 4 of my networked computers. After i noticed it happening on all 4 computers I shut them all down, changed my routers password, randomly picked one computer to DBAN 3x, and never allows the 3 infected computers to touch the network where the 1st computer was located. After DBAN had finished I re-installed the OS and got it back up and running. I did my standard antivirus (Avira, Lavasoft, Spybot, & Spyware Blaster) installs and set Avira to update everyday at 3pm and perform a full scan for viruses at 3am. The following morning after the computer was well since finished with the 3am scan i found that it was still doing the same exact thing with text missing under icons on the desktop and in folders and error messages were popping up with nothing in them.

Also please note: All four computers have entirely different hardware, all four computers are running Windows XP (3 are running Pro and 1 is running Home), all four have Av... Read more

I am using Windows ME in a new Dell Dimension 4100 series, Pentium 3, 1.1 gig, MSN Office 2000 Professional.

I am having trouble saving a word document that was e-mailed to me. I did a "save as" into "my documents." Then I changed something in the document, and I saved it. Upon closing the document I was asked if wanted to save changes and I said yes.(this confused me as I don't normally get this when I do the normal 'save' under the 'file tab')
Later when I went to open this document, I got an error message, "Locked for editing by another user, click notify to open as a read only copy". When I clicked on notify, I got another error message,"Winword has caused an error in winword.exe. Winword will now close.Try restarting your computer."

When I tried to delete this document, I got the message "Cannot delete file. Access is denied. Source file may be in use."

I experimented and again saved into my documents, again made a change, hit save and closed the doc. When I got the message asking me if I wanted to save the changes, I said no. This procedure enabled me to reopen the document.

I don't understand what is happening and why the key seems to be how I answer the question, do you want to save the changes?

Can someone help?

A:Word doc-error messages: locked, winword error, source file

SOUNDS LIKE (tho I'm not sure), that Word didn't exit properly at least that one time. Next time it happens, and you believe Word to be closed, hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and see if "winword" is still in the task list. If so, click on it and hit End Task. Then delete your file.

If your programs aren't "really" closing down, you may just need to clean up your hard drive. Follow the instructions at:

I have Windows XP and run Avast as my security tool. Yesterday while just browsing the internet my Avast tool started going crazy blocking things left and right and running programs in its 'sandbox'. I thought it was taken care of and then i started receiving pop ups of hard drive errors. I ran the typical hard drive tests with no problems and ran a virus scan but Avast was not finding anything. I rebooted only to find a large number of my files/folders missing (soem were very important documents and pictures)and the hard drive messages popping up quite frequently. The speed of the computer/internet has severly slowed as well.

I downloaded MalwareBytes and it found to files that i deleted. However, everytime i restart the computer and run MalwareBytes, it is still finding stuff.

How do I get rid of this hiddent worm, trojan, whatever it is for good so it wont be creeping back in?

I am very new at this so please be patient with me ..

I have a programme that runs on my 32bit XP SP3 Machine, it works very well but has two error messages when launching. The error messages are to do with a non certified GPU but my programme works fine with the GPU so that bit is OK, to launch the programme I have to hit the enter key twice getting past both error messages.

What I really would like to do and I have spent some 6 hours trying to write a bat file or vbs that is a single hit clearly I have no idea how to do this - I would always spend time researching problems but I am stuck with this and wondered if I could get some help.

I have written a bat file contents below that actually launches my prog but then it stops at the first error message waiting for me to hit the enter key.

" cd C:\Program Files\my prog.exe

start /? [enter][enter]

The (my prog.exe) is obviously not the real programme.

Could somebody kindly help me ?? it may well be that what I have below is completely wrong in that case I am more than happy to try something else - I am also not clear if I need a bat or vbs file but what I do know is that I need some help.

I have a Dell laptop for work and somehow got some malware. When ever I open programs or start the computer I would get a lot of error messages that would say ""The application or DLL .... is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I read on another post that recommended you download and run AdwareSE and Spybot S&D and then run an online virus Scan. That resolved alot of the error messages but I still had some.

That post them recommended running hijackthis and post the log here for help.

Hi there.

I started having a problem with my Excel documents a few weeks ago. When I try to open a document (from the folder or the recent documents drop down), I get a series of errors that say that the file cannot be found - but it gives four file names, only the last of which is the correct one. I even get an error message for the correct one.

If I just "OK" all of the error messages, the document will open with all of its data intact and I don't have any problems working or saving.

I haven't installed any new hardware or software (at least I don't remember adding any). I'm about to run Spybot again. My Norton anti-virus is up-to-date.

Any ideas? Thanks much.

I have tried to user "File history" to make backups of my files on D: (not of the "official" Windows libraries) to an USB HD. I'm on Windows 10, latest update (anniversary edition), 64 bits.

I know that the error messages appear only in the event logs of Windows and I look there for them.

First I had many errors because of too long paths (>259 characters). I spend hours to correct everything, so now it should be OK but the backup still crashes when I include some directories.

Error in the event log: 201, something like "Impossible to analyse the changes...". No other error. And nothing is backed up.

As this happens only when I include some directories, I suppose it has to do with specific files - but which ones? How can I find out which file causes the problem? Does "File History" save more detailed informations somewhere?

It means the file is damaged or corrupt. Is it saved on a USB drive, or on the computer hard drive? if it's on a USB, then the file wasn't properly closed before the USB was removed. If it's saved to the hard drive, then the file is damaged.
You can try opening PowerPoint, then clicking on the file you want to open and dragging and dropping it into PowerPoint.

Hi all - hope you enjoyed the holidays.

Husband installed a Windows update this morning.

Upon reboot, system went into Check Disk and reported multiple errors.

Once Windows loaded, a bunch of DOS shell windows began opening.

Then every program he clicked gave an error message that the DLL file was missing.

He has IE running and MSN Messenger; no sound. I Googled one error message and then had him try to open Add/Remove Programs at the cmd prompt. It wouldn't, and the error message given was:

Error in shell32.dll

Missing entry: control_run.dll

NOD32 system scan hung up at 20% so he gave up on that.

He says his computer occasionally runs Check Disk on reboot. Are we looking at an infiltrator here or maybe a failing hard drive?

Thanks for anything you can offer. That is our "business" PC so he's freaking out, of course.

I was trying to install an HP Printer. It would not install. I called HP and an HP Tech accessed my computer remotely. He pulled up a bunch of error and stopped working messages. He said my computer was about to crash. He wanted a ton of money to fix it. I have no money, so here I am. I have attached a summary of my computer. I am really computer stupid so any help I can get will be truly appreciated.

I don't know where to begin. Let's start be deleting all old versions of Java in your control panel and updating at: java.com: Java + You
Also, stop using ToolWiz and Optimizer Pro These Registry Cleaners cause the kind of problems you're experiencing.

Recently, when booting up, I have been getting 2 error messages (both appear twice). They refer to files not found or missing but I cannot begin to identify the files - all that I see are a series of little squares: 7 in a row, then a space, then 14 more. I click on OK and away they go and everything else seems to procede normally. I have a Dell Dimension, Windows XP Home. A call to Dell was not encouraging - they recommended re-installing the system. Oh dear. I have Norton Firewall and Anti-Virus, Microsoft's new Anti-Spy, WinPatrol, AdAware and Spybot. I am FAIRLY confident that my system is clean, but then, who knows? I have run registry checks and let them do their business (I don't fool around with the registry on my own, I am not a trouble-maker). If I need to re-install, I will work up the courage to do so, but until then...maybe someone here has had some experience with these error messages. At least I would learn something new. For now, my system SEEMS to be working OK, but what do I know. This could be a harbinger of worse things to come.

I have an old copy of Command and Conquer: Red Alert.

At first it wouldn't recognize Windows XP but the compatibility option under properties fixed that problem.

Unfortunately I ran into another problem. When I try to run the game I get an error message:

"The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_12 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"

I tried reinstalling twice, with no solution.

Any idea if there's something I can do?

I had installed a Scrapbook Software Program I purchased comercially onto my HP Pavillion zt1130 notebook {Windows XP} and it loaded and ran fine.
Then I used a thumb drive wireless networking adapter{Netgear} to access our LAN dsl, which it did witout problems and the connection worked great.
After using the Scrapbook program and also surfing the Web a bit, I decided to do a little computer maintenance and ran the defragment tool that came with Windows XP. It was late, I fell asleep, and the computer went into 'Hibernation' mode after a while. When I awoke {sleepy} a few hours later I noticed the computer was still on, attempted to turn it off but since it was hibernating it would not respond to my usual commands ; I had forgotten how to bring the computer out of hibernation, so I used the 'paperclip' reset button on the back of the notebook to turn the machine off.
The next morning I attempted to turn on and use the notebook, and this is what happened :
The computer powered up
The HP logo appeared quickly
Before the Windows logo appeared I observed.the following error report on a black screen:
<Windows root> system 32\hall.dll file missing or corrupted. Please install a copy of the above file.
I do not have access to the start, programs, or any other menu to begin searching for the file.
I am not familiar with how to configiure the notebook to boot from a CD.
I do not know how to change the Bios settings, or which Safe Mode selection to use.

A:Windows XP error missing dll.hal file

Hi Lashleyfry43

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Do you have the Windows XP disk, or is it a recovery disk?
Will the computer boot from that disk?
When attempting to enter Safe Mode, did you try the:
Last know good configuration option?
Does the computer show a key to enter setup when it starts?
If not, when starting the computer start tapping the F1, F2 or Del to enter the Bios.

Once in the Bios, arrow over to the Boot menu and set the boot order to start with the CD-rom.

See if Option 1 at this link helps:

I am running XP media edition on my home laptop (acer aspire). On booting up I get as far as the wallpaper screen then the error message wininet.dll file is missing together with a recomendation to restore the file appears. The laptop then stays on that screen. I am not able to go any further or access any files or programes.

Using the safe mode with cmd promt I have tried the following all with no success: I have tried to copy a clean version of this file using both the copy and expand command. I have tried to rename the file and to delete the file. None of these have worked. I Also get when attempting these is a cyclic redundancy check error message.

I dont know what to do next. I have no discs as Xp came pre installed with the laptop. The acer recovery stuff is no longer there following a total rebuild 18 months ago. I am not able to get on the internet. I can not run any virus software.

What should I do next? I have spent hours and hours trying to reslove this.

A:Wininet.dll file missing error

Welcome to TSG!

If you don't have any XP CD, where are you copying/expanding the wininit.dll file from?
The CRC error indicates the file you are trying to copy is corrupted.

Have you tried copying the backup copy from Windows\System32\dllcache to Windows\System32?
Or copy the file from anopther WinXP system using a floppy, Flash drive, or CD.
You could also try running System Restore:
How to start the System Restore tool by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt in Windows XP

It could be the file was deleted by your AV/AS software as it was infected, so running a scan once you get the file restored would be a good idea.

Major issue here!I loaded AVG last night (and some associated toolbar, per AVG install). AVG immediately flagged two issues (even before I ran a scan). I requested a fix. (note: during AVG install, it requested I remove Norton and I did remove Norton). After loading AVG, Google Chrome got an error stating "This application has failed to start because msjrdu.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." However, I closed the warning and Google Chrome operated normally. NOTE: I googled the dll file and no entries were found for this mysterious dll. I shut-down the computer and upon re-boot I now get the same warning pop-up when windows boots and for every single exe that loads up upon boot. And for every application I try to open. If I x-out (or close) the pop-up, then my desired application will run (all except Google Chrome and Firefox and Adobe). So far, I have loaded and run many spyware applications (AVG, Spybot, Super Spyware, Malwarebytes). And I ran the online scan from Microsoft (called Safety Scanner via onecare live website). The Safety Scanner ststed that two problems could not be fixed. Finally I ran ComboFix - which told me that I have an infected system32 imm (or something) file. But ComboFix was not able to fix the problem. Please help!!!! Hi Folks -

I am having a problem with a new Dell Inspiron 15 3520 that came with Windows 8 installed and that I had been using for only a month when it went bad. I had tried to repair it as best I could, but, at this point, the problem seems to be beyond my capacities to deal with or understand, and I am seeking help.

The problems started when I turned it off about ten days ago, and went I turned it back on a couple days later, and it was stuck in the apparently famous Win8 "Automatic repair couldn't repair your pc"/BSOD loop. I was not able to boot into safe mode. System restores made no difference. Somewhere along the line I found something that said that I had an "inaccessible_boot_device error".

From the repair menu maze, I was able to get to a command prompt. I used this to copy almost all of my files off of computer.

Chkdsk showed no bad sectors, no bad partition records, or other irregularities. sfc returned "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations". Some test (I do not remember which) showed that the boot record and BCD were fine. The Dell hardware diagnostic test showed everything working fine.

I am thinking that it is possible that the source of this was a virus or mechanical problem (I saw no evidence for either). If I had to guess, however, I would imagine that the computer stopped working after an automatic update pushed a corrupted/incompatible driver. I have seen discussions online abo... Read more

I'm running Windows XP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and when I recently ran my Norton WinDoctor, I got a couple of problems - which WinDoctor was able to fix all by itself.

I also got one that requires a manual fix. The diagnostic reports that:

"CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer32," refers to a missing file, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8b.ocx."

I've located this entry in my registry, but I'm unclear as to whether I should delete the CLSID entry or the indicated Default, which references the Data "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash8b.ocx."

I suspect this is an "orphan" registry reference, and that the minor fix is within reach - but which entry in the registry to delete?

A:Error message for missing file

Hello Bob

That missing file is connected to the virus.
You will need some help in cleaning it all out.

Please read ?HijackThis Log Help? and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Don`t try to fix this yourself as you could do damage and lose all access to your system

Please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.
