I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

Not sure if anyone might know but:

I have come across 2 different software programs where the numerals in the Version number are seperated by comma's, instead of periods.

Wondered if the comma's could cause problems with functions like updates etc OR if something on my computer could have caused this to occur.

Thank you for your time,

Hi everyone... I have a new dilemma. I'm grabbed the data with this link and entering it into Excel. I did text to columns because I need to find specific cells (snowfall totals and departures). So I used a formula as arrow points to, to find these cells. I set all this up this morning..

When I just refreshed the new data this afternoon I realized it went back to one merged column.

3 questions:

1. Is there an easier way to grab that specific snow data from either the web itself and enter it into excel OR refreshed each time in excel without staying as one column?

2. Do I simply have to do text to columns each time? (twice a day and 30 different tabs!) 30 NWS Offices.

3. Why when I hit refresh all the program froze?

Thanks so much!

I need to shrink one partition, partition D, and extend partition C with the newly unallocated space. I can shrink D without any problems, however, for some reason the two partitions are seperated by a small recovery drive that i can not delete. Any advice about getting the two partitions next to each other or how to extend the drive otherwise?

A:Repartioning when the drives are seperated by a recovery drive

The Microsoft rule is that a drive or partition to the right of the C: drive, or whatever drive you want to extend, must be Unallocated Space to extend that drive.
The recovery partition, to the right of the C: drive, is used to restore your computer to Factory Defaults if there is disaster.
There are 3rd party utilities like Easeus Partition Master, or Minitool Partition Wizard that may allow you to do this, but it may make the Recovery Partition unusable.
If you have Windows install media, and do not care about using the Recovery Partition, then you can right click the Recovery Partition in Disk Management and Delete Volume. Making it Unallocated Space, then you can Right click the C: drive and choose to Extend Volume into the Unallocated Space. Be sure to backup in case this goes wrong.
The other alternative is to get another HDD that is larger,(ie) 2TB drive. And Clone the old HDD to the new, replace the old with the new and be back in business with a much larger drive. You then can keep the old drive as a backup, or you can format it and use it for storage.

Here is my system breakdown:
- Laptop Computer with 1 Harddisk (3 Partitions: C, D, E)
- Running Windows XP SP3
- Virus/Malware Scan: Deemed CLEANby Avast

HISTORY:
- Was installed with Windows Vista on C: partition
- Was installed with OSX (via osx86) on D: partition
- E partition is a FAT32 partition to swap files from Vista to OSX

- I got sick of Vista, and bought myself an iMac so I decided to convert the whole laptop back to XP.

- I formatted D drive while in Windows Vista to FAT32 as it wouldn't let me format to NTFS. I assume it has something to do with the fact that OSX was installed on it.

- After backing-up everything, I reinstalled Windows XP (SP2) via the installation disk I got when I first bought the Laptop.

- In the setup, I deleted the C partition, and selected to install XP to the unlocated space. I selected to fully format (not Quick) the new partition in NTFS.

- After install, everything is working fine so I reinstall all my drivers/programs, and have been working on it with no problems.

- That was 4 months ago.

PROBLEMS:

- Few days ago, I remembered that my D and E partitions are both FAT32 and that they should be formatted to NTFS since I'm not installing OSX on it again.

Hello,

In VB Express, what is the easiest way to read data from a text file, when the data is seperated by either a couple spaces or commas. So far i have been using:

Using sw As StreamReader = New streamReader("C:\test.txt")
dim line as string = sr.readLine()
while not (line is nothing)
...
line = sr.readLine()
end while
End using

to read in lines from files but what do you do when you want multiple pieces of data from the same line seperated by commas or large spaces such as:

Data like this: [Name, Age, Country]
Jim, 23, Canada
Mike, 27, Canada

Or data like this: [Episode Title Air Date]
100 This is ep one Jan 1
101 episode two Jan2
102 the third episode Jan5

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,

I have another ravishing question for you. I have many (and I mean many) files where the words within the filename are separated not by spaces but rather by periods.

Example:
My.Summer.Vacation.mkv

This is because my family uploads movies and other content on sites like Rapidshare and Hotfile, in which the filename cannot contain spaces. Therefore people use periods to separate the words of a given file.

My question is the following, is there a way to index my hard drives using either Windows 7 search or even Google Desktop in order to return a search result for the word "vacation" in my above example. At the moment it does not return a result since the word vacation is not separated by spaces.

As per my usual etiquette, if anyone helps me figure this out, I will post images of how to do so in the replies section of this posts.

Thanks for any input,
Missionman

Hello,

The harddisk in my PC is 8 GB of which only 2,56 GB is still available now.
From I similar PC (done away in the meantime) I still have a 8 GB IDE harddisk.
and want to place it in my PC.
Please mind that I have never opened a PC sofar.

a) I don't know to what electronic circuit-cable it must be connected (wondering about serial and parallel)

b) then this second harddisk must somehow be connected to and made visisable to the system (by cables I think; however what cables, new ones or
already present)

When I tried to google this subject I only found items on partitioning etc, not
about how to get and connect a second harddisk inside a PC.
Furthermore I have no idea whether there are special well-known problems
related to having a seond harddisk installed (e.g. very slow system)

Advises will be highly aprreciated.

I purchased 64MB of RAM to bring my memory from 64MB to 128MB and my computer hasn't crashed ONCE since I got XP! But having two operating systems on one 10 gig hardrive and lots of preinstalled programs such as office has taken its toll and I was warned the other day that my harddisk was nearly full! I deleted all my unnessesary files and managed to get back 1 gig of space but I'm still not happy and would like to get a new 20gig hardrive. It makes more sense to use my recovery disk to return my computer to the way it was when it left the factory and reinstall windows XP on the new harddrive leaving my old operating system on the old C:\ and installing all my programs into the new harddrive. I have two questions about this:

1) Will my computer become dual-boot which i DONT want to happen I want the same setup as I have know but with XP installed on the new harddrive?

2) Will I be able to call my new harddrive B:\ as I don't have a 5 1/2 floppy drive installed and would prefer to have things organised and call it that, if not what will my drive call itself as default as I already have A,C,D,Q,R drive letters already taken?

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.

Hi,

My laptop internal harddisk is not accessible. The laptop was switched ON and I was holding it in my hand. Suddenly it slipped and fell down. Since then, the harddisk is not accessible. Windows and BIOS are not detecting the harddisc. So, I bought a new harddisc and replaced it with the old one. Then I connected the inaccessible harddisc to the laptop via USB port by purchasing a harddisc casing and connector. But the disc did not get detected. I didnt see it in disk management. I use windows 7 OS. The connector cable I purchased is Y shaped at one end with two USB connectors. The other end has only one connector which goes to the hard disc.
I have data in the harddisc and I need to recover it. Is there any way I can access the harddisc? Please help!

Thanks & Regards,

First did you use the Usb plug with 2 wires at the computer end ? If not please do so. Also, try it with both Usb plugs in ports at the PC end.

If that doesn't help it looks like the drive is too badly damaged to work.

often at this point you press a key to enter
depending on make an model of your PC
could be <F2>or <F10> or <Del> or another key

In the bios will be a section, probably security to set a bios / harddrive password
in some cases just setting the bios also sets the harddrive
BUT

After restarting my computer, this ididicator shows that the harddisk is running. This light lasts for many hours even I stopped all the programs running and Internet is disconnected. THe only way to stop this idicator is running a virus scan on the harddisk. After that scan, the idicator's light stops showing that nothing is using the harddisk. The virus scan shows that my computer is clean. Some days this problem doesn't appear but most days I have to do scan. I forced to do this scan because neglecting this may lead to harddisk failure as it happend before.

Hello Newtonx,

This is normal for there to almost always be some activity on your hard disk. Vista has many background programs and services that are constantly accessing the hard disk. Some of the most common ones are the Index updating the index during low or idle usage of the computer, System Protection creating a restore point, scheduled Disk Defragmenter scans, etc........

Hope this helps,

Hi benangaihte

Right click on my computer
Choose MANAGE
Then find DISK MANAGEMENT
You should see your ext hard drive under the list.
Right click on it, and choose CHANGE DRIVE LETTER
Choose anything, but I recommand something higher than M:

I've seen this problem with alot of STORAGE DEVICE

It happen more often with Laptop because they usually have Card reader.
So it makes couple drives like e:, f:, g:.
Storage device tries to install themself with the drive letter next to CDROM
c: - HD1
d: - HD2 or CDROM
e: - Mass storage device (maybe for card readers)
So your external HD tries to have the E: drive (probably a bug)

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question. If it is not, I apologise in advance. Just as a matter of interest, is it possible to over defragment one's hard drive? Can it maybe corrupt files? I defragment almost everyday, sometimes even twice or more times a day. Thanks.

A:Harddisk Defragmentation.

If you are talking about Windows XP it should tell you there is no point in defragmenting below a certain limit. If it does that don't bother to defrag - you're just wearing out your hard drive for no purpose.
Assuming everything is working perfectly no harm should come from defragmenting when its not needed but in the real world it does increase the chances of corrupting data through either disc error or power glitches. It's a matter of balancing the risks and the benefits.

Hi,

Toshiba L750, core i5 - win-7 64bit installed. 4gb ram, 600gb HDD,
50gb os, 250gb, 250gb partitions. 8gb Virtual memory on 3rd partition.

Used sparingly and working fine until a few days ago. I heard some faint whirling sound (probably the HDD) and in some time the OS crashed.
It went into an infinite loop of shutting down and rebooting trying to recover the system.

At some time, I chose command prompt and ran chkdsk on all the partitions chkdsk /f /r

It seemed to work, although the computer was only half as fast.

After a couple of boots, I only get a blank screen and a cursor at left hand top, post the bios screen.

Has my harddisk crashed? If so, how do I get it working back, either with the same HDD or another one
The data is not really important to me ( I have a back up on my desktop)

Thanks in advance for your help

When you say 'everything' what did you try?
Did you try updating the drivers?
Did you make sure the volume is full from the speaker icon in the taskbar?
Did you make sure no sounds are muted when you click on mixer?
Are you using external speakers/headphones?

Hey there

I'm having a weird issue with booting up my computer and I'm hoping to find a solution that does not involve reinstalling windows completely. Might come to that, but first I'm looking for other issues.

To give some context:
A few months ago my primary harddisk started failing. I acquired a new harddisk, installed windows on it and it has been working fine.

When I boot up the computer, I can select between the old and the new windows installation and I've simply been using the new one. I've left the old harddisk plugged in as I had some data on it I wanted to salavage and then I just left it there. I've gotten the data of it and have had no reason to unplug it.

Recently, however, I wanted to unplug the old harddisk as there has been some issues with hangups and I had a suspicioun they were caused by windows (for some reason) reading from the old harddisk.

When I unplugged it I got a "Bootmgr is missing" error and could not boot up. Thus I need to have the old harddisk plugged in in order to boot up windows.

WHich is annoying, as I think the old harddisk is the cause of the performance issues I've been having.

Obviously the new harddisk has not been made bootable by installing windows on it. The old harddisk was plugged in when I installed windows, so that's likely the cause of it (for some reason...?).

Is there any way for me to fix this without unplugging the old harddisk and installing windows again? I'd rather ... Read more

A:Cannot Boot from Harddisk

The Windows installer will put its boot-up code (the bootmgr) on the primary hard drive regardless of the drive that Windows proper is installed on. You can repair this by booting your Windows 7 DVD and running the Startup Repair tool. See Microsoft's how-to article here. Make sure that the original disk is unplugged before attempting this repair.

3.Currently its showing 397 bad sectors on disk surface according to software Hard Disk Sentinel

Operating System Win 7

A:Bad Sectors on Harddisk

Currently its showing 397 bad sectors on disk surface according to software Hard Disk SentinelHi -This program is not one that I am familiar with, but it sounds like many Registry Fixers that show 200 problems, and say" for $50 we can fix these" I would be very careful about believing all that this program is telling you about your system !!The Hungarian or German company behind this program seems to offer very little support to their program, and also seem to want your money -Run chkdsk /r first and see if the report is the same as this HDS program reports to you, as your inbuilt diagnostics are usually better than some 3rd party programs -Method 1: Run As Administrator from shortcutUse this method and type chkdsk /r at the command -Thank You -

Hi I have a 1Tb SATA hard disk, Iam planning to replace it with a SSD for better performance, is this possible? and if so what is the maximun capacity that can be installed.

A:Harddisk Upgrade possible?

Hi, Basically yes and to make everything simple, please use 1TB SSD. Samsung 850 series is very hot now. Why I say easy/simple, because with 1TB (or larger) you can clone the whole existing HDD (1TB) and the changeover will be much simpler. Regards.

I was thinking about partitioning the hard drive on one of my computers running XP SP3 and installing other Operating systems on them, but I have no clue how to do it Also, I know there's a way to do it with an OS disk, but I have a SP2 one, would using that make a difference partitioning the harddisk?

A:Partitioning a harddisk

I would recommend wiping the entire disk, and starting from scratch using the Windows installer to partition your drive out. What size of drive is it, and what OS do you plan on installing on the other partition?

Is it possible that a hard disk can be damaged by virus?A computer of a friend of mine has been complaining about her sluggish PC even if had been formatted. The technician said the harddisk was virus infected? The hard disk should be replaced?what do I need to check out first to know the cause of sluggishness? Thanks.

A:Harddisk Is Infected!?

Since the virus is stored at the hard disk when placed, yes
examples are:
-It deletes files needed to run a system
-Tracks down your activity and private information
-It also slows down pcs
and many more......

Did she download any AntiVirus program?
several of these at the same time may be the cause of the sluggishness
especially when they are scanning at the same time

Also, did she got recently infected with a particular virus?
After reformatt of her PC?
