Old version of Bitlocker issue

Q: Old version of Bitlocker issue

Dear Team member,
First I have a windows 7 OS - 64 bit (not Pro nor Ultimate).
I have installed bitlocker on a Seagate Expansion portable drive on my old laptop with an XP or older OS (now scrap) and I have set a password.
I have the password but I want to remove completely.
I tried several Seagate softwares and searched for Bitlocker programs that could delete the password but without any result.
Would you kindly assist me in deleting the password that locks the access (not encryption) to my external HD.
Thank you,
nagbay

Preferred Solution: Old version of Bitlocker issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have a laptop that has win 8 but not the Pro version. And it apparently does not have Bitlocker on it.
I have the win 8 Pro upgrade software but i think its the full version which i bought for another pc.And the upgrading instructions on the outside of the box talks about upgrading from vista or xp only.I am running win 8.

The only reason I am wanting to upgrade to win 8 Pro is to have Bitlocker.

Is it not possible to install the win 8 Pro OS?

Or is there another way of obtaining Bitlocker?

Its an acer laptop.
the system info says:
the system type is a "x64 based-pc"
celeron cpu 1017u 1.6 ghz,2 cores,2 logical processors,
Win 8 version is 6.2.9200 build 9200
thanks in advance

A:Upgrading Win 8 to Pro version - needing Bitlocker

The upgrade route is to use the "Add Features" option:
Add Features to Windows 8

Where I am, you can also buy the Windows 8 Pro Pack as a boxed product in the shops, and it's considerably cheaper than the Microsoft Store ("I want to buy a product key online") route. So I'd check your local computer stores to see if that's available.

It's still quite pricey (it is here, anyway) though.

What do you want to do with Bitlocker? Depending on what you're trying to do, you might find other 3rd party software that does the same.

I'm trying to help my daughter who is away at college with her XPS 13 laptop purchased June 2017.  It's running Windows 10 Home.  She took it out and opened it up after class and a blue screen with BitLocker looking for the recovery key was present.  From what I've read, bitlocker isn't available on the home version, only pro and enterprise.  She can't enter the recovery key since it was never turned on, even if it was available.  I told her it will probably need to be reformatted since it's looking for something that is not available.
Has anyone seen this before? Any recommendations?  She's taking it in to the tech center later today.
I forgot to add that when she goes to her Microsoft account and looks at her devices is shows Windows 10 home AND BitLocker ON, although it was never activated.  The "Get BitLocker recovery keys" link brings her to her Onedrive account.  She says she doesn't see the recovery key anywhere on her OneDrive account.
Thanks,

George

I went to bed last night with a reasonably happy computer, came down this morning and one of my drives wouldn't unlock, giving me a message saying that "The BitLocker encryption on this drive isn't compatible with you version of windows. Try opening the

Has anyone got any idea as to why and a possible solution?

Hi guys,

I've got issue with my bitlocker...
it's win 7 ent 32 bit.

i had bluescreen of death and now i'm unable to start windows anymore.

if i choose to start windows normally, it would just restart after the windows splash screen
if i choose safe mode or any other, it will ask for the bit locker key

the bitlocker txt file that contains the key doesn't have the same recovery id as what it's shown on the screen. So I'm pretty much stuffed here i think.
Can anyone advise me of the best way to recover my data?

If I have another hdd that i can new fresh win 7 with, then attach the first hdd that i'm trying to recover, if I re apply bitlocker then, will I be able to access my files then?

if this won't work, please advise me a solution. thanks

Hi all,

The really odd part is I have been running Windows 8.1 Enterprise on this laptop previously and was able to activate BitLocker without an issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey people, I'm kind of desperate here.
So, I was encrypting my external hard drive with BitLocker on Vista Ultimate, and I put on my password and such, and the power in the house went out when it was about 12% done. Now, however, when I try and access the external hard drive, I get an error message stating: "Error Recovering Disk E: There is no recovery password information on this volume. Any Ideas? And if you do have ideas, please tell me how to use them. How do you use the Bitlocker repair tool, for example? It's a windows update thing!

Hello Antares,

Does your PC's motherboard have a TPM.
Did you do steps like in the tutorial below?
BitLocker - Turn On or Off for OS Drive in Windows 8
If so, then this would be normal if you have the USB flash drive connected while the PC boots. When the PC boots, it will automatically read the startup key from the connected USB flash drive, and allows Windows 8 to start.
Hope this helps,

Hello everyone,

Thank you for coming and looking at this issue. I recently did a sweep of my drivers, this ended with several BIOS and other driver system updates being done. Somewhere, I'm assuming the BIOS flash, caused the need for my need for my Bitlocker Recovery Key.

Honestly, I made a mistake on the executable thumb drive and took me the last 12 hours to find the Recovery Key. Now that I have the recovery key, suddenly my usb keyboard decides it will not work. I have tried every port combination I could think of and nothing will work. I attach it to the laptop I am using and it is working fine, so it has something to do with the computer.

I'm hoping someone here could help me with some idea on how to fix this? I have the correct key to unlock the drive and everything would work fine again, just the keyboard doesn't want to work for me now on the desktop.

Thanks in advance to any answers, I will be standing by for any advice or help.

Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had encountered Bitlocker and TPM issues recently (possibly after a recent update)?
Just a few days ago every time I wake up my XPS 9360 it would ask me to input my recovery keys.
As this is getting annoying, I disabled Bitlocker altogether but somehow I can no longer enable it, it's saying "This device cannot use a Trusted Platform Module".
I've also checked Device Manager, I can see the TPM under Security Devices with the following message: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)"
It appears the TPM feature just disappeared.

It's kind of similar to the discussion on the link below, but they're talking about 9550

Dell Support is not very helpful either, still waiting for their reply.

Thanks,

Hey all.

Here's a little backstory and then my problem.

I like storing certain things in the cloud. I believe in the storing things in 3 rule so I generally have whatever I need on my PC, on my NAS and then in the cloud in various services. I have nothing sinister/evil/bad to hide - but there are of course sensitive files I'd rather not allow with welcome arms, hackers who may happen to bumble into my folder when doing their foolishness to get at these sensitive files.

Generally my goto program is Truecrypt, but that is no more so I'm messing with Bitlocker. For the most part Bitlocker has worked for me, however recently something has changed. I'm the only person that uses my PC in my household. Everyone else has their own device(s) so this is a mystery to me. I definitely haven't changed anything. I haven't even changed or installed any software in sometime, certainly not between when Bitlocker worked and then stopped working for me.

So I created my vhd and encrypted it a while back. I used to just open it and get asked my password and the drive would pop into the hard drive list so I could open and use it. Well, now I get an error. I don't know if this is so much bitlocker as something else, but it really only affects Bitlocker encrypted files in a negative way.
This is the window I get.

I have tried creating new vhd's, vhdx's, fixed and dynamic. etc. After creating and encryption the drive works fine. The issue is after I dismount. When I mount it, I get a mount ... Read more

A:Unusual Bitlocker Issue (Location is not available, etc).

I don't know the answer to your question, but you said you like storing things in 3. Therefore, I assume that means you have one Bitlocker encrypted VHD(X), which you have backed up/stored in 3 locations?

Therefore, I'm wondering whether the error you're getting is because there are three identical versions of the same VHD and that's confusing Windows, because all three will be exactly the same files, with exactly the same drive letters when mounting, but stored on different harddrives.

I'm not sure how you'd test this theory, maybe make sure your PC can't see the other two versions, then mount/eject just the one on your local machine, reboot, and try again. If the VHD mounts fine with no error, then maybe try mounting one of the other two and seeing if this causes the error message to return.

If it is this causing the error, I'm not sure how to rectify it because the whole purpose of syncing between 3 locations is that you have 3 exact versions of the same VHD. Unfortunately, that will mean the VHD's are going to have the same drive letter assigned too...

Mmm, let us know what you find.

The organization I work for have been building ThinkPad L560 models for a while now using SCCM 2012 R2 and pulling down Windows 7 32-bit images over our network. The task sequence enables BitLocker on those L560 at the very end. During the setup of an L560 you have to go into the BIOS and select DISCRETE TPM option and then PXE over the network when settings are saved. All works OK. Recently we took delivery of a newer model we had never set up before ? an L570. The BIOS allows a 2 way choice for TPM which I gather from the user manual directs one to select TPM 1.2 for Windows 7 and TPM 2.0 for Windows 10. We are still dealing with Windows 7 so I chose TPM 1.2 in the BIOS and cleared the key and built the new model using PXE to SCCM servers and the laptop built and BitLocker is enabled and the finally built laptop looks OK. The problem comes when I do a restart ? it is looking for the entry of the BitLocker Recovery Key. Furthermore it is erratic in the asking for this entry ? sometimes it asks for it and sometimes it does not ? and it can be asked for on a simple warm restart or a power down and cold restart. Nobody is changing the BIOS so how does it think a change has taken place. I have also done the Suspend Protection followed a few minutes later by Resume Protection procedure but this does not make the problem go away. The issue is that I can't seem to enable or find bitlocker in any of the area's outlined. When I try to right click on the C: drive I don't have an option for bitlocker. When I go into control panel, there's no bitlocker icon. When I do a search on the machine for bitlocker I do get a "manage bitlocker" icon, but it's doesn't do anything when I click on it.

I have followed the tutorial on this site and downloaded/installed the reg files to enable it on a non tpm device. Can see that they did update the policy on the machine, but still no joy.

When I go into PC info on the machine in question I don't see anything about bitlocker. It's like it's not there. Do you have to add a windows feature to enable it?

Thanks

Darren

I'm trying to activate Bit locker for HP Elitebook 840 G3 after enabling the bit locker and restart to complete the Encryption process , after Asking for Pin code , I receive this message , and encryption doesn't complete

Message : "
Windows Bitlocker Drive Encryption Information
The system boot information   has changed since BitLocker was enabled.
You must supply a BitLocker recovery key to start this system.
Confirm that the changes to the system boot information are authorized.
If  the changes to the system boot information are trusted, then suspend and resume BitLocker. This will reset BitLocker to use the new boot information."
Otherwise, restore the system boot information

Hello! In our company we are using (amongst others) T460s and T560 laptops. Those laptops are Bitlocker encrypted. After switching on the laptop and when entering a Bitlocker PIN with the integrated keyboard everything is fine. But when using  an external keyboard, we are facing a strange behaviour: When typing a Bitlocker PIN (or also the recovery key), it randomly occurs that several keystrokes are interpreted as DOUBLE keystrokes. This holds for typing the PIN or the recovery key, but also for deleting already entered PINs and keys by pressing the backspace button. I tested this issues with several different external USB keyboars and also WITH and WITHOUT the Lenovo docking station. I am not sure whether this is a Bitlocker or an hardware issue. Affected are ALL T460 and T560 computers in the company. For all other Lenovos everything is working fine. btw: an update to the newest BIOS version did not change the issue. Please let me know, thanks, Christian
