Missing Usual Hard Disk Drive Icon

Q: Missing Usual Hard Disk Drive Icon

I am running Windows XP SP3.I tried to install Universal Netboot Installer(UNetBootin) so I can run Linux too.The installation of Unbuntu linux failed and I had to uninstall UNetBootin too.But after that my hard disk drive icon is missing:Only C: drive icon is missing. This is where linux files were copied and later deleted. How can I recover it back?Thank you for your help in advance

Preferred Solution: Missing Usual Hard Disk Drive Icon

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all!

I have two hard drives. In windows explorer only one of them has a normal hard drive icon, the other one looks like the 'unknown file' icon. I haven't done anything to it recently, so I don't really know why it happened. I have Win XP, SP2. What I really would like to do is restore the original icon, so that it's the standard hard disk icon.

I don't understand what has happened. You know when you click on "my computer" and it shows you all your partitions, with a little icon next to it...well, my main data partition's icon is missing and replaced by that windows "icon" that you get when a computer sees an unrecognized file. its hard to explain.

My data on this partition is readable....runs fine. I have posted a cropped screen grab to show what it looks like. The one in question is Data D: and it used to look just like the others. "D" and "E" are both located on the same physical hard disk.

How can I change that icon?

During periods of inactivity i've noticed that my hard drive light gets going and I can hear some activity... I've noticed that every now and then while i'm browsing around, sometimes the focus gets taken off of my browser and I have to reclick the browser to put it back as the active window... One last thing is that whenever I reboot, my sound icon does not appear anymore in my system tray and I have to manually add it back through the control panel (it is supposed to be there by default, according to settings)

I've run both Spybot and MBAM as well as AVG to no avail they all did not find anything, so i'm wondering if i have anything suspicious...

I am in desperate need of some technical help. I have a Hp Pavillion desktop with a service pack 2 windows xp operating system My little sister's hard drive on her computer crashed so I replaced it with a new one. Before the crash, I had set up a wireless network with a linksys router just fine and the internet worked perfectly on that computer. However, after replacing the hard drive with the new one and rebooting the system, I proceeded to try to reconnect to the internet; however, the "wireless connection" icon is missing from the network connections place. I have already gone in to the wireless configuration zero and it says it is started (and I have restarted it) I am so frustrated and my mom threw away the installation cd for the router so i can not re set up the internet...

Any suggestions please My 11 year old sister and my mother and most definitely me would be greatly appreciated

Getting ready to retire my desktop, and am working on moving YEARS of data to a new home server. In the process, I wanted to verify some info on my hard drives. (2) 500Gb WD SATA drives. First drive partitioned into (2) virtual drives (C/D); second drive partitioned to (4) drives (E/F/J/unmapped). C is the only bootable, only Win XP SP3 (fully updated) for OS.

With the additional drives from USB sticks, USB drives, and memory card slots, I use Disk Manager a lot to remap drive assignments. Until now, I have never had any issues.

I went to start combining data onto a single drive, and get ready to physically move the single drive into the new server. Howeveer, when I went into Disk Manager, the first hard drive is not shown - the listing starts with HDD 1 (E/F/J/unmapped). Disk 0 (C/D) is nowhere to be found. It is also not visible in Device Manager.

However, it is obviously working (I boot to it!), I can find it in WinExplorer, and Defrag sees it.

I have been scouring the internet, and only found a few (current) cases of similar things, but none of their suggestions have worked. I have run several security scans, rootkit detectors, spyware scans, etc, to no avail.

Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi All,
I just purchased a new internal hard drive (Seagate Barracuda hard drive - 3 TB - SATA-600) to be used for storing data. Installation was simple, and Disk Management noticed it right away, with 1 problem: The free space is 743.48 GB, not the 3000 or so I was expecting. Disk Manager says it is 100% free. So the big question is: Where is all that other disk space?

Thank you!!

Apologies if this is a really basic question that you've all come across a thousand times!
I have a PC which used to have a FAT32 and NTFS partitions (it used to have Windows 2K). I reformatted the hard disk to get rid of any previous partitions and I now have 37GB of space on a 40GB HD. There is just a single NTFS partition with Windows XP Pro. The 3 GB does not appear as unallocated space. I want to sell this PC and I'm concerned that the reformat did not completely clear the HD and may still contain personal data. What do you recommend I do?

A:Missing Disk Space After Reformat Of Hard Drive

37GB sounds about right. Hard drive manufacturers use decimal measure for size, whereas normal computer practice is binary. The discrepancy annoyed some people:http://apcmag.com/7449/seagate_offers_cash...ssing_megabytes

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Running on Intel Celeron with a RAM capacity 1GB. The operating system: Windows Vista Basic Home. Its been running fine since the last two year but over the past week I noticed that the hard-disk space of the C drive was decreasing rapidly without me downloading anything, So I deleted a lot of data, used C-Cleaner and yet every time I switch it on almost half the space that was left is eaten up. I browsed through a lot of articles and most of it pointed the problem to the 'System Restore' feature. I ran disk clean up and nothing worked so I disabled System Restore and on Elevated Command Prompt I tried VSS LIST STORAGESPACE and all of that and all I got was that the query was invalid. I browsed through every folder. The space used by Windows and Program was not the problem and then I found that there was a folder in C---Users----Public-----PC DM Files------- PC NAME------ Over a million folders (In fact more) called Backup with the date and time and each minute(eg. Backup_15/6/2010_12.00 AM, 12.01 AM etc) had close to 50 folders and new folders keep coming up every time I switch on the Laptop and it is not possible to delete them as well because every time I do so the system hangs. Any Help on this? What can I do?

And I've scanned the system with BIT Defender, Kaspersky and Avast. Its all clear.

A:Windows VISTA eating up hard-disk space. Not the usual problem

Initially I would suggest turning off startup programs to sort this out. Go to MSConfig (type it in the start menu search box) and click startup. Uncheck all entries except your antivirus. Restart. See if that allows you to delete the folders.

If so you can turn back on the ones that you actually need, and leave off the others. Remember that most startup entries aren't needed at all, often being put there to do speed up loading a program when you actually decide to use it, but the program will still load fine if its turned off. Turning off startup entries is a good way to help improve the performance of your computer--I have exactly 2 enabled.

I have a problem with my computer's hard drive. I have recently formatted, re-installed windows 98 (In some thread here), then re-partitioned into two drives and installed XP. I noticed that IO was missing 250mb on drive c:. I than repartitioned into one drive, and installed XP Home. That is my current setup.

Drive c:, is 3GB and when going into C:'s properties it says it has 196mb free. However When I select all files in C:, and view properties it displays that all files total to only 1.73GB. So why does c:'s properties display the wrong disk space.

Windows is reminding me that I have under 200mb on the windows drive (c. I have hidden files shown.

It didn't work and I kept receiving an invalid parameters error.
I restarted my computer to find that my hard drive was partitioned.
I extended the drive back and rebooted.
Now in windows explorer I am at a loss of about 200 gb of space.
The space is apparently missing.
I will attach two pictures.
One of the Windows explorer and the other of a tool I used called partition wizard.

and here is partition wizard

Partition clearly shows that I have all the space I originally had, but windows explorer doesnt.
How can I fix this?
Thank you for everyone's time in advance.

Hi there!. I was wandering if anyone could help me out. I am running XP pro and although i recently updated with SP2 the PC appeared to be ok. Now when i try to boot up i get DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. If i put my operating disk in it loads the various files and proceeds to windows setup if i chose to set up windows XP now ie re -install the whole system it goes to the licence agreement then to the windows xp professional setup offering options either to set up windows on the selected item or create a partition or delete the partition . Most imporantly in the box below it states 57240 mb disk o at Id on bus 0 on atapi and underneath <setup cannot access this disk> which is worrying. In the bios it appears to be able to detect the fact that there is a hard disk drive available. If i do press enter at this stage a darker blue screen appears stating that a problem has been detected and that windown has shut down to prevent damage. It then goes on to suggest things that are not possible ie boot into safe mode ofr update or disable drivers it gives the following technical information which for me as a beginner is as much use as a wooden eye. It say ***STOP: 0XOOOOOOO8e (OXCOOOOOO5,OXF99C6CFD, OXF95 A5800, 0X00000000)
*** Setupdd.sys- adrress F999C6FD base at f999d000, datestamp 3d6dd67f
whatever that means
If there is anyone who can help i would appreciate it. I assume the hard drive is ok and the connections are too.

Hi all,
I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

A:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

When it comes to actually using the BartPE disc, you?ll need to first enter your BIOS and set the CDROM drive as your primary boot device, this is the default setting in most computers.Once BartPE is loading, when prompted for network support, click ?no? if you do not need it like in this case to save yourself some time.Click on Go , Programs, A43 File Management UtilityThis will open a similar program to windows explorer so you can copy your data before formatting. Locate the hard disk where your windows installation is on, select the folders you want to backup and copy them to the other partition or hard disk.If you have an external USB hard disk and want to copy your data on it, make sure you connect it to the computer before you boot with the BartPE disk.http://reanimatepc.com

Hey Guys,

My Situation

In December 2009 I purchased a Toshiba Qosmio X500 - Model No. PQX33A-00X00J

At the time I upgraded my purchase from Toshiba Reseller BD4U, going from the standard 1x 500GB Sata drive + 1x 64GB SSD... to instead having 2x 500GB sata drives. I purchased with 3 year onsite next business day warranty, that is is now expired.

It came loaded with MS Win 7 Premium Home Edition - but no disks provided.
My Needs
I need/want to factory reset my PC - its starting to run slowI need to re-partition from my existing 4x partitions to just having 2
The Issues
Possibly as a result of upgrading the disk drives at time of purchase, I don't believe I have a hidden Recovery partition in order to do a System Recovery from the Hard Disk Drive - see image of my current partitions attached I don't have Win 7 OS installation disks or Toshiba Driver disks as they should have been installed by Toshiba

Do You agree that I DONT have a Recovery Partition - when looking at the partition image? I'm confused on this point coz people say its hidden!?Given I have no Toshiba Drivers Disk or Windows 7 OS disks - what should I do? I'm thinking of downloading Win 7 (use my product key from sticker under PC) and making a disk/USB (but need to learn how)Is this where I get ALL necessary Toshiba drivers for my PC from?Does Toshiba provide a link on its site and instructions on where to get Win 7 ... A:new hard drive causing nonsystem disk or disk error

If you would provide the make and modle of the machine to be upgraded, I will try to assist. It could be as easy as configuring a BIOS setting.

Hope someone can help with this, as it's got me scratching my head.

I reinstalled my computer the other day, and since then I've had a hard drive playing hide and seek with me. I have one hard drive partitioned in half containing two operating systems - one is Vista x64 SP1 and the other... let's say it's UNIX-based and made by a company whose name is a fruit. I also have a second hard disk with all my data and media on. Both are SATA, connected to the motherboard SATA ports and configured as AHCI. Windows Vista cannot for some reason see the data drive. The 'other' OS sees it just fine, as does any other OS I've booted from CD in my diagnostic attempts - Windows PE can see it, Ubuntu can see it - but Vista cannot.

To begin with, it would see the drive at first, until I attempted to open it in explorer or access any of the files directly, whereupon it would suddenly disappear. Now it just doesn't see it at all, even in Device Manager. Which rules out my usual uninstall-and-reboot method.

Any ideas?

A:Missing hard disk

Just as an update which may or may not help - after mentioning uninstall-and-reboot, I had the idea of uninstalling the AHCI ports and SATA controller. After a reboot, the data drive reappeared and worked fine - for about ten minutes, then it disappeared again. Since then I've been able to bring the drive back just by clicking 'scan for hardware changes' in Device Manager, but it only works for a few minutes at best before disappearing again, and usually disappears instantly. Really puzzling me, this one.

I have 2 250GB SATA's setup as Raid 1 or mirrored which is my E drive and 2 75GB

SATA's set up as raid 0 stiped which is my C drive. When I started my computer

drive E wasn't reconized. When read in disk management, drive C is reconized and

online, But drive E isn't reconized but shows up below as basic and unallocated but online.

I suspect when I installed the lastest nforce4 amd chipset drivers and went to

shut down the computer. I killed the power too soon because sometimes my computer

hangs waiting for a program to close and it may of been writing somthing

important. Anyway, I can't do a restore point because restore dosen't see drive

E. I can't find a driver to rollback. It seems all I should have to do is

re-reconize the drive I did this and nothing happened. The next thing I was

going to do is reinstall the nforce4 driver. I'm running XP Pro Could anyone please help? Thank you

for your time. BJ

A:Hard Disk Missing

A similar thing happened to me a while ago. Check the BIOS to ensure that the drive is registering correctly. Sometimes my computer will, for no reason, change the BIOS setting for the PS drive to "None" and it causes a similar problem with Windows to that which you've described. I don't know why it does this nor why it only affects my primary slave and not any other drive.

hi, hope someone can help. My Toshiba satellite c50-b laptop has suddenly lost about 35gb from its normal 500gb. The shop is telling me this is due to a) Microsoft hiding the operating stem or b)'natural wastage'? I think this is lies but can't refute their claims. The disk management program does not show any hidden partitions. I only have the one c drive. I have been experimenting with Linux software but have removed them and tried resetting back to default and reinstalling window 10, but nothing gets me back to 500gb. Is this a problem with Toshiba hard disks? Hoping for any help.

A:missing 35 gb from hard disk.

1GB according to the disk manufacturers is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes. According to how the operating system (and the rest of the computing world) calculates it, it's equal to 1,024 megabytes, which in turn are equal to 1,024 kilobytes, which are themselves equal to 1,024 bytes. So one GB as per the disk manufacturer is really 1,000,000,000 / (1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024) = .931GB as measured by everybody else. So a "500GB" disk has 500 x .931GB of storage, or 465GB.

This isn't because your system isn't showing some available storage or because the formatting lost storage - it's just the byproduct of the disk manufacturers exaggerating the storage capacity. It's similar to stereo manufacturers overstating the wattage of their systems, tv manufacturers overstating the dimensions of their tv's, homebuilders overstating the square footage of houses, etc.

My Hp pavillion pc started crashing a lot recently and recovery didn't work so I told was advised to get a new hard disk which I did but now I keep getting the above error. I've been into the bios and all seems to be booting from the correct drive
The first time I tried the hp recovery disk it started to work but when it came to reinstalling the software it stayed on 0% for long so I switched off. Maybe that was a mistake. I've run a diagnostics test all passed the test but at the end it said testing: Boot path, error code BIOHD-3.

I tried putting the old drive back in and it was the same as before. But I was still able to go online, albeit until it crashed again.
HP want more money to help even though I brought the recovery discs they suggested.

I really hope someone can help, I've been told there needs be A partition before the software can be installed.

Sorry if the wording is a bit messed up, I am writting this from a mobile.

Thanks in advance,

A:Non-system disk or disk error with new hard drive

Have you tried to run the recovery disks again? They should automatically put a partition on the hard drive.

If it still doesn't work then there's usually one of two different possibilities:
- bad recovery disks
- other bad hardware in the system

I'd suggest running these free bootable diagnostics first: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Then, if those tests pass, contact HP to return the defective recovery disks and get a new set.

I was advised by a computer tech to buy a new hard drive because of issues I had with my HP pavillion s3330.
After installing I got a non-system disk error message.
After going into the BIOS to make sure it was booting my HP recovery cd from the the right drive, I ran a diagnostics test and after finding no problems an error message came up at the bottom saying - Testing: BOOT PATH, Error code: BIOHD-3.

I consulted HP who said I need to create a partition for the software to be installed to.
If that is the problem then can anybody assist me with this as I have no clue.

By the way, I'm using Vista home premium.
