Optiplex 5040 SFF - Front USB 2 connector with PowerShare stopped working after adding new 2.5 SATA disk

Q: Optiplex 5040 SFF - Front USB 2 connector with PowerShare stopped working after adding new 2.5 SATA disk

When I installed a new 2.5 SATA disk in my Optiplex 5040 SFF, the front USB 2 connector with PowerShare stopped working.
When I uninstalled the disk, the front USB 2 connector with PowerShared started to work again.
Because the power supply just have one sata power-cord I used a splitter to supply the two disks with power.
According to the specifications it should be possible to use to hard disks in the Optiplex 5040 SFF. I have just not been able to figure out how :-)
I have not been able to find a reason for this, can someplease help me :-)
/Thomas

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So far, we have had four, reproducible issues (blacking out/flickering of monitor) with varying models of iPhones being plugged into the front USB 3.0 ports on OptiPlex 5040 small form factor PCs. iPhone 7, 6+, and 5S. Swapping cables does not affect result and upgrading BIOS to latest version also does not correct the issue.
There was also a user who had her screen blacking out with just her iPhone cable plugged in. This is the thunderbolt to USB cable. They use this cable to charge their phone and also to use their headphones with their Windows 10 PC. This cable is plugged into the USB 2 quick charge port.
These PCs are part of our Windows 10 deployment. I am unsure and have not yet tested this behavior on an OptiPlex 5040 running Windows 8.1 (the OS we currently have deployed).

I'm looking to add three drives to my system. However, I only have two SATA power connectors.

1. SATA-II 320 GB (OS installed)
2. SATA-II 1TB (Caviar Green WD10EARS)
3. SATA-II 1TB (Caviar Green WD10EARS)

I have enough spare molex connectors. when I connects my third drive using SATA power connector (4 pin) system start hanging/freezing and in worst case my third drive disappeared.

Note: I have changed many sata power connector (molex to sata connector) but the result is the same

PC Specifications
Processor: [Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz
Motherboard: P5E-VM DO
RAM: 2GB (667MB)
Super Drive: disconnected
using built in VGA
PSU:TOWERS power Supply AT-400 watt
what should i do?
Is 3.3V necessary for SATA-II.

My question is why molex to sata connector 3.3v orange cable missing. Lets say if i cut SATA connector (including orange 3.3v cable) from other faulty PSU can i use it for third HDD.
This guy says you can do it.

Hi hardware gurus

I've got an old 750 GB HDD (SATA) which will be fine for file serving (multi-media). It's got the standard SATA connectors (both the small one (data) and the power connector but it's ALSO got the 4 pin power connectors that you get with older IDE drives (Molex ??)

Do I need to connect BOTH power sockets or just ignore the older 4-pin IDE type connector.

Not sure why they needed BOTH power connectors -- maybe this drive might have been used also for making external HDD's at one time.

Any ideas -- I'm minded just to connect the two SATA cables and ignore the other one.

Cheers
jimbo

A:SATA disk with OLD (4 pin) power connector

Hey Jimbo,

It included both for backwards compatibility at the time, but you would only want to connect one of the power connections and not both. Both could fry the drive.

I would recommend to use the SATA power and data connections.

I am trying to get an Optiplex 5040 build from a USB boot flash drive, but it just won't even get to the task sequence (SCCM 2007). It's OK if I boot from a CD (but after a few tries!).
The error I get, after "initializing hardware devices" message is: ‘Unable to read task sequence configuration disk. For more information, please contact your system administrator or helpdesk operator.’
‘Unable to read task sequence configuration disk.

I am making sure I use the USB 2 ports and not the USB 3 ones. I even disabled the USB 3 ones in the bios, just in case, but the result is the same. The smsts.log file, open with Trace32.exe, highlights these three errors:
"Failed to find the current TS configuration path"  (if I F8 during the process, I can't even get an ip address).
"Failed to find the configuration path. The system cannot find the path specified. (Error: 80070003; Source: Windows)    TSBootShell    25/04/2016 10:44:22    864 (0x0360)"
The USB Flash drive is set as removable (diskpart).
The Optiplex network drivers were added to the wim file.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Hi,
I have a new Optiplex 5040 for evaluation for customer rollout that is reporting approx 1G usable RAM less than our current Dell 7010's. Both system run win7 in 32bit mode.
When I use device manager on the 5040, view->'Resources by connection' and select the memory tab, I note the at physical address A4000000 - 7FFFFFFF there is a PCI bus, but the intel HD graphics 530 mapped in this space starts at E0000000.
I'm concerned about the gap between A4000000 and E0000000 compared to what I see on a 7010 or 7020.
Is it expected that HD Graphics card is mapped so far into the A4000000 range on a 32-bit system?
Maybe the gap between A4000000 to E0000000 is expected, if so, Where has the extra 1G gone?
Can I move the HD Graphics 530 closer to A4000000?
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Jason.

I just built a new system about a month ago and have had no problems with keeping the USB mouse plugged into a PS2 port, actually I prefer it and just to disable the USB in the bios. Strangely enough the mouse just went dead, at first I thought it was the mouse going out even though it was only a month old, but then I plugged it into the usb port and it worked fine. Like I said I never had problems with this before and it struck me very strange that only the mouse port would stop working. Anyone else ever experience this?

Things that changed on my system recently: installed MP3 player software and have downloaded song sets via USB to the player. Besides that its been solid. Win2k, AMD64 3400+ Ocz platinum memory, Dragon K8 motherboard, 500w psu, 10k WD SATA hd, ATI 9800pro.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, worried the mp3 might have fried something via USB.

Thanks.

we have a batch of new 5040's
I have had SEVERAL users complain about flickering/blanking monitors-- the one I am looking at now--both monitors will blank out and return.  it was doing it probably every minute.
unplugging one or other monitor does not fix it.  will still blank existing monitor
no real commonality other than 5040's
bios / drivers are up to date
originally on a dell 19" on DVI (DP-DVI cable)-- blanked/flashed
new monitor--24" dell on DP (DP to DP)-- still does it
I am beginning to think there is a big problem with these display ports on the 5040's
also note that these users have two or three monitors each.
This is becoming a real thorn.

help!

A:OptiPlex 5040 SFF video is flickering/ blanking

I'm seeing this this precise problem with Optiplex 5040 systems with HDMI and 2xDisplayPort connections on board. I'm using Acer monitors, very inexpensive no-frills model V246HQL; not sure that matters.
Symptom: system works OK with a single monitor, via HDMI or DisplayPort to HDMI. System will not cold boot with 2 monitors connected if the monitors are HDMI and powered on. Turning one monitor off lets the system boot OK. Switching to a DisplayPort to VGA adapter works around it; and using an HDMI/DVI adapter plug also works around it.
Notable: this was after BIOS upgrade to 1.5.7, and 1.5.9. This was working on BIOS 1.2.7... I should have left it.
Onboard ePSA diagnostics will hang at "Video Card" test if 2 monitors are connected.
My workaround: use DisplayPort to VGA adapters, and connect 2 monitors via VGA.
A motherboard swap fixed this on one system. I'm about to have the second system repaired too under warranty.
I think this might have something to do with HDMI and DisplayPort display handshaking. I'm betting a future BIOS update might finally resolve it.

My new (to me) OptiPlex 5040 SFF desktop can detect a 6TB 5900rpm SATA HDD but not a 10TB 7200rpm SATA HDD (HGST HUH721010ALE604). It has the latest BIOS, and the 10TB drive's operational wattage is only 6.8W so "power supply isn't powerful enough" shouldn't be the reason. The BIOS doesn't see this drive at all. Is there a chipset limitation? If I can never get the 10TB HDD to work, would an 8TB HDD work? I just want to have as much internal storage as possible. Thanks in advance for your help. BTW, this 10TB drive works fine in a 5-year-old HP 8300 Elite minitower. I refuse to believe that HP desktops are better than Dell's!

We have been replacing workstations at our college with OptiPlex 5040s. We are running Windows 8.1 Enterprise x64. We use SCCM to image and have the latest Deploy OptiPlex 5040 Windows 8.1 Driver Pack loaded so the audio driver is current.

There have been many reports of students not getting audio from their headphones in the labs that have been upgraded to OptiPlex 5040 model. When I would head over to a lab and test a few random PCs (because the reports I was getting didn't include actual station designations), they would all work fine. I would plug in my 3.5mm plug earbuds and would get the audio popup asking what type of device I plugged in. Headphones is the default and so I would click "ok" and a few seconds later, the audio controls in the Windows taskbar would re-enable and sound would work fine through the headphones.
What I discovered was that if a student used USB headphones and then left the lab then another student comes in and plugs in 3.5mm headphones, they will not work unless the run the "troubleshoot sound problems" option from the task tray.
Anyone else experience this issue? Hopefully Dell is aware of this issue. All of our previous OptiPlex models had two audio ports (mic and headphone) and never seemed to have this issue.

Hi All,
Looking at  towers in the current Optiplex range shows the 5040 is supplied with ddr3L 1600mhz ram  -  does anyone know if there's a particular reason for that older standard still being used?
On the outlet site there are 7040 towers (skylake cpus) advertised with ddr4 2400mhz ram  -  but won't those towers only be able to run their ram at 2133mhz?

A:Optiplex 5040 & 7040 - ddr3L & ddr4 (2400mhz)

The 5040 is positioned lower in the price scale, so less expensive DDR3L is used.
The CPU determines the memory speed -- so yes, the RAM will run at 2133 MHz with most CPUs.

I have an OptiPlex 5040 mid-tower.  This is the standard desktop / mid-tower provided by my employer, so I can't just swap it out for a better one - I can upgrade the components, but I can't get a different model.

It will be used for Adobe Premiere video editing.  I have purchased 32GB of RAM and a 1TB M.2 hard drive for it.  All that's left to do is upgrading the factory video card.

What's the fastest nVidia card I can put in it that will work with the power supply in the 5040?

Honestly, I'd rather just replace the power supply with something better (and with the additional power plugs for video cards) and put an nVidea GeForce® GTX 1080 Ti in it, if anyone knows where I can get a replacement power supply that has the extra wattage and power plugs.

A:What is the fastest nVidia card I can put in an OptiPlex 5040 mid-tower?

The answer depends on the card itself.  Don't expect to fit a 1080-level card in that system - these are just about all too large to fit the chassis, even with the power requirements met by a replacement power supply.
Without a PS upgrade, you're looking at a mid-range 1050 card -- these can be had without the additional power connectors that higher-end cards need.  Also remember that most of these require UEFI systems - not legacy BIOS systems -- so you need to make sure you're running in UEFI mode or that you're willing to reload the OS after changing modes.

I have a 5040 mini tower i7-6700. Manual in Specifications/External Connectors section there is a Parallel feature "25-pin connector (optional)".   I was hoping that mean I could plug a cable onto the motherboard  with a 25 pin parallel connector.  Have done that before with other motherboards.  But looking at the mobo, I see only two unused connectors.  One is labelled USB - INT.  The other label is unclear.
Does the motherboard have onboard parallel support?  I would prefer not to install a parallel port card in the PCI slot.

A:OptiPlex 5040 Mini Tower optional Parallel support?

The documentation must be incorrect. I do not see anywhere on the motherboard to plug in a 25 pin parallel port cable. The internal parts page doesn't even mention 25 pin connector?

This feature was available on the lowly (now obsolete) vostro 420 and 430 which I installed on several machines, and it worked beautifully.

You might have to open up your case, trace back the cable, and re-plug it. It could be detached, or the USB controller on the front ports could be fried somehow too.

My HP desktop is about 2 years old, and has two USB ports on the front and a several at the back. I had no problems with any of the ports till I used a USB stick in the now-broken port and it caused a malfunction so that now that port won't recognise any USB device.  It says "USB device not recognised.  The last USB device you connnected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it."   I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB ports on Device Manager, and have been through all the suggestions on both the HP support site and the Microsoft support site. The faulty USB stick must have caused some damage to the port. I'm hoping you can suggest something that I can do to get it working again.

Hello, The front internal Camera my Lenovo X1 stopped working 3 weeks ago. When I open the camera app it says the camera is not detected. I cannot find anything related to the camera in my device manager. In the control panel I have it set so my camera is not using any privacy settings and I use norton Anti-virus and they claim to not interfere with the camera.  I reinstalled the drivers from the Lenovo website and they still dont work. Can someone please help? Although I have a registered warranty with Lenovo I am not successful in getting intouch with their online customer support, so I am on this forum.  Thank you.

Hi,
I have a Dell Optiplex 780 desktop running Windows 10 successfully until this morning when the on-board audio has stopped working. Note that I am talking about the built in speaker not plug in ones. I can still get sound if I plug in headphones but I prefer not to use them and I want to know what's up.

I figure that there might have been a windows update that may have changed things but I'm no expert.

Thanks in advance

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

Hi all, I'm hoping somebody can help me.

Yesterday I received a new Samsung SATA 320GB hard drive. My PC (running XP) already containes a 250GB IDE drive. I installed the SATA drive with no problems initially, then copied all my important files over onto it.

I decided to take this opportunity to format the IDE drive and reinstall Windows XP (SP2). (I unplugged the SATA drive data cable for this, to avoid accidentally writing over any data!)

After doing so succesfully, I then re-connected that SATA drive, only to find Windows doesn't recognise it. Now when I go into 'My Computer', the SATA drive shows as drive 'Local Disk (F:)' but when I try to open it I get the following message:

'The disk in drive F: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?'

Obviously I clicked 'no'. Also when I right-click properties, it reports as 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free.

Also, I have just noticed that in disk management, the disk is showing as two partitions one at 128 GB (F: drive) and the other 207.35GB (unallocated).

Can anybody help? Thanks in advance! Even if anybody knows a way to simply recover the data, I could then re-format it and start again.

A:SATA HD stopped working after XP reinstall?

dont try this as im not super with sata drives..but me being me i would allocate the remaining space..

like i said dont risk it..wait till someone like vladimirb or dunedin..obviously smarter :P

but if it wasnt partitioned...i dont see why it is now..

How to connect usb front connector on the Mother Board, have +vcc, +d,
-d, and ground.

Thanks!!

A:front usb connector

This would depend on your motherboard, if you dont have the manual, download it from the mfg web site, and it should tell you how to connect them.

Here's a pretty good tutorial I found that explains it. It's probably not exactly as your setup but it should be close enough for you to get a good idea of what to do. I think you are probably interested in the "Front USB via a Port to Header connection" section.

Good luck.

The ePSA reports Hard Drive errors. How will I be able to fit a new Hard Drive and install Windows 7 Home Premium, please?

A:Inspiron 5040, hard disk is dying...

You'll need a new 2.5" 9.5 or 7 mm SATA drive plus the recovery media you hopefully made when you received the system.
Service manual is here:

I have just changed my system from a large case to a matx case, but used all the part except the mainboard. Changed from a Asus P6T Deluxe to a Asus Rampage Gene II.

Now I thought I might have to reinstall windows, but as luck would have it, it booted straight into windows with no other problem except I had to register windows.

It was only when I tried plugging in a usb memory stick into the front of the case that I got a bsod. If I plug it into one of the back usb ports it works. So I checked to see if the cable was attached correctly on the internal header and again it was.

So could this be down to windows or a hardware problem?

It is a hardware problem ! Sometimes the front usb ports does not work properly.

I just put in a Soyo P4I865PE Plus Dragon 2 into a POWMAX case. I had another Soyo Dragon P4X400-8235 mobo that had fried, and I'm replacing it.
What the mobo connector pins for the front panel require are the HDD LED, ACPI LED, PWRBT, RESET, POWER LED, KEY LOCK, SPEAKER.

My case has the SPEAKER, THE RESET, and the HDD LED, plus a POWER SW, and
one cable with
mic-bias
spkout r
spkout l
Return R
Return L

and 2 cables each with
+vcc
+D
-D
grounds.

So I have the SPEAKER, THE HDD LED and the RESET pins connected.

Right now I'm not getting any power. I suspect that it's because the POWER LED hasn't been hooked up. I don't know if hooking the POWER SW to the POWER LED will do any good--or any harm. Any suggestions, or do I need a different case?

Thanks for any suggestions, tips, or answers.

Hi Guys:

It's been a while since I've posted a question, however, this one is really bugging me. Recently, I've been putting together a lot of systems that have the 9-pin front-panel connection on the motherboard. The problem for me is that the ACPI/LED has only a
2-pin and most cases come with 3-pin cables. No mater which way I input the 3-pin cable, the front-panel LED light will not come on. Does anybody know what I'm referring? If you can Be of assistance, please give me some input.

Thanks.

A:Motherboard 9-Pin Front-Panel Connector

If the motherboard requires a 2 pin connector and the case manufacturer supplies a 3 pin connector just take the pins out of the connector and place them next to one another in the connector. There is a little tab on the connector you can lift up and slide the pin out. It's hard to explain here, but once you look at it closely you will see what I mean.

My motherboard is a model Ms-6330 Ver: 2.1 (Microstar) but it also has the gateway part number 2512595. I am currently relocating this motherboard to a brand new case that I just bought and I ran into a problem. The front panel connectors (power switch, led, hdd led, etc) go onto the motherboard in a certain area where there are 15 pins. Unfortunately I have no idea which connectors connect to which pins. Can someone help me? (Maybe someone with the same motherboard/problem). All I need is a way to identify the pins and make sure I don't like accidently fry my motherboard. Thanks a lot! -Andrew C.

A:Front Panel Connector on Mobo

Hi,
For starters, have you checked your manual? Also, look on the m/b...in really tiny abbreviated letters you should be able to see where these go (you may see "pw switch"...."HDD ACT"........i know when i was installing my connectors, i got most of them wrong..but dont worry..no frying of the motherboard.....if the connector is in the right place but no light from the LED..try reversing the cable........the easiest cables to place are the pw switch and the reset..as you can test these easily....good luck
