Acer Aspire - Windows 7 reinstallation stuck on "Setup is starting"

Q: Acer Aspire - Windows 7 reinstallation stuck on "Setup is starting"

Hi all, I am trying to reinstall Windows 7 on my notebook (Acer Aspire 5742-7645) from the DVD. I get as far as this screen: http://www.buildeasypc.com/pics/wind...windows7_3.jpg
When I click "Install now," the screen says "Setup is starting..." and then never moves on. I have gone into BIOS and set the boot order to DVD first. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Aspire one netbook with windows 7

model PAV70

i tried to restore it to factory settings (backed up to C file)

it went fine untill it got stuck in a loop saying it couldnt install windows and had to be restarted. i would restart and it would go to the same error over and over

then i tried to use the recovery discs (unsure of how to use them) i hooked up the external drive and powered on but no options came up although the disc was making noise as if activated. i left that going all night but no change.

NOW i power on and only get SETUP IS STARTING SERVICES

i have tried F8, F11, F12, ALT + F10 and nothing

the only thing that worked was shift+F10 (i tried ms00be but got nothing) (i did regedit/child comp/1 changed to 3 etc but nothing)

the only way i can get a response from the computer is SHIFT + F10 or if i press the space bar to "pause system resume" this gives the option to "continue" in which its back to being stuck on the SETUP screen or i could press "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" SO should i try to delete the data and go to boot menu? if so where do i go from there?

Hi to all

Hopefully I would find help here.
I have bought a new machine with 4GB ram, 500GB HD, Intel DG41KR motherboard and Intel G41 Graphics Card.
I received the machine with Windows 7 installed, but wanted to format and install XP since I would not be able to upgrade my screen reading softwares (I am totally blind) and other necessary stuff are too much for my little budget. I can not go on with 7 since they are not that compatible. So I planned to install XP.
The problem is that XP can not be installed on the machine. Everything is ok till a screen with the sentence "Setup is starting windows" appears and seems to stay till the end of life. By googling there were suggestions to replace the HD, I replaced it with newer one and nothing changed. Others suggested that might be due to falty ram, also replaced with no change. Some other suggestions recommended burning new XP and installing the one that is new and no change. I unplugged all devices; keyboard, mouse, speakers, everything unnecessary for the installation procedure to go on but all were in vain.
I disabled all devices in the BIOS and the problem is the same. No change.
And to narrow things down:
1. I changed sata mode to native, so that the problem is not in the correct SATA, SCASi, RAID, IDE AHCI, ICH etc drivers. Even I integrated the compatible SATA drivers and burned them into the XP disc and there were no change.
2. I created a bootable USB XP thump drive to instal XP from and the problem is the sa... Read more

Hey guys currently using home premium 32bit but got pro upgrade 64 bit so had to do the custom install from booting with the disk

I choose the language, keyboard layout etc, choose custom install, pick the hard drive and it goes to the installing screen.

When part 2 of the install screen is almost done it said installation will continue after the computer restarts.
After it restarts, it just stays on the "starting windows" screen and the windows logo never shows. It wa son there for hours. I restarted by pressing the restart button and it continued back on the step 2 and them same thing, restart and then continue later but now the screen is just stuck on the "starting windows" screen.

Any ideas????

After following the tutorials on the site to get windows on a flash drive or dvd, i used that to run the installer. sadly, after you hit "start to install" it goes into a seemingly infinite setup is starting cycle where ultimately nothing happens.
any solutions would be appreciated
also, i read somewhere that i can fix this with cmd by using this
At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT
however, after typing diskpart my cmd does not let me type anything else, effectively rendering this useless.. also regarding the infinite loop startup repair guide here it didnt let me issue any commands after typing D:

thanks in advance, help is much appreciated!

I purchased my laptop in January and I'm not really sure what happened, I must have been struck by a pretty bad virus or something because I had a lot of protection and ran regular scans. But anyway, one day I booted up my computer and it said error recovery or something a prompted me to repair my pc but I choose start windows normally, and it loaded normally but just before it could get to the login screen a blue screen error flashed for a split second then my laptop restarted and took me to the error screen again. when I try repair my computer, it takes me tow blank lie screen, ole the login screen, with a cursor in the middle, but no dialog box. I left this running for up to 3 days, so it's definitely not just loading. so I decided my computer is pretty much screwed, and searched for my installation disc it came with. (windows was already preinstalled so I'd never used it before. on startup I pressed f12 and booted from cd rom, then it said press any key and took me to a loading screen, which took about 5 minutes and then to the installation screen. I said my language is English, choose uk English etc. then it says install now or repair your computer. when I click the repair option, I am taken to the same blank blue screen from before. when I press install it says setup is starting... and the loading cursor is spinning, so I know it's not frozen. I left it for half an hour, tried again, and this time left it for 11 hours, but still no setup has started. ... Read more

It probably isn't a virus or any kind of malware if you are experiencing issues when attempting a fresh Windows installation.
It's possible the hard drive has developed a fault, despite being only six-months old. You should test it to confirm if this is the case.

Download SeaTools for DOS from here (click Downloads): http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

Now download & install (on a working PC of course) IMGBurn from here: http://filehippo.com/download_imgburn/
Use IMGBurn to create a CD from the SeaTools for DOS ISO CD-Image File.
Now boot your laptop from that CD and SeaTools for DOS will eventually appear on the screen.
Select your laptop's hard drive and test it using the long/extended test if available.

Hopefully the drive will pass the test, but at least you can then move on to troubleshoot the problem elsewhere, confident in the knowledge that it's not a faulty hard drive that's causing it. So testing it is definitely not a waste of time.

So one evening my laptop randomly restarted itself and upon logging back in I found that I could not run almost any of my programs (.exe files). I tried checking for anything unusual in the registry but found nothing. In task manager when I clicked a program or attempted to run it in various ways I would see it pop up for a second before it got killed.

Finding no way of fixing it online I decided I would attempt the factory restore option that comes with the laptop in the system recovery that places all your documents in a C:Backup file. But nearing the end of this an error came up saying 'setup is starting services', which says to restart the computer to continue. But I can no longer get it past this screen. I've tried rebooting it in safe mode as well.

Any help is much appreciated! I don't even particularly mind if I lose my information at this point I just need a working laptop...

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

Ok, so I recently had some problems with my computer and I ended up restoring the computer to its original factory settings. I chose the option of restoring it while keeping user files and what not. Anyways everything was going well up to this point. The screen has been stuck on "Setup is starting up services" (with that loading bar underneath the text) all night.

I'm pretty sure I did everything right. I unplugged everything, except the keyboard, monitor, and the mouse. I did not insert the Windows 7 recovery disc, but I was under the impression that I didn't need them for what I was doing.

I've looked online for people who have had similar problems, and some people give solutions; however, none of them answer my most immediate question. What do I do about it being stuck on this screen? Do I just manually shut the computer down? Is there something on the keyboard that should abort the process?

My computer is a Gateway and I'm using Windows 7.

I know I'm probably not using all the correct terms for some of the stuff I'm talking about, I'm sorry I'm not a "computer guy". I'm the guy who uses ALT, CTRL, DEL; or runs a security scan to solve every problem I have, lol. This is way above me.

A:Stuck on "Setup is starting up services" during restoration

Your files should always be backed up externally.

Your focus should now first be on rescuiing the files stranded in the failed Recovery. To do this you'll need to boot the installer given in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to rescue the files as shown in Step 3.

You can then try unhanging Recovery by entering Device Manager during install to uninstall any Devices in error (likely video) so that Recovery completes: Device Manager - Access During Windows 7 Installation

If this doesn't work then wipe the HD with Diskpart Clean Command to run your Recovery Disks or get the superior Clean Reinstall.

2011 Vaio laptop, windows 7, and that's all I know about the computer. It's my daughter's. Her infant son banged the keyboard, making the screen freeze. It then rebooted and got stuck on Start-up repair or something...I don't remember now, that was a few days ago. We left it for hours, but it didn't go any further. So I tried other remedies:
1. Removed battery and power cord and held power button for 30 seconds. No change.
2. Reboot in safe mode. It wouldn't even go into safe mode.
3. Rebooted to last good configuration. Still wouldn't boot.
4. Tried to run Windows 7 repair disc. Wouldn't go past the third step.
5. Removed the hard drive and replaced it with one known to be working, and it just blue-screened and died.

Now it doesn't even get to the startup repair screen. It is on a blue screen that says "Setup is starting". And it stays on that screen.
Hope someone can help!

So about two weeks ago my computer's screen would just stay completely black whenever I turned it on. Soo I backed up my files and I guess I reinstalled the system or something.
But now it's just stuck at "Setup is starting services" with a loading bar under it. Then after about 10 seconds of this a window opens saying "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation." I click "ok"--because it is the only option--and it restarts the whole computer. Bringing us back to "Setup is starting services".
So I guess what I need to know is how to restart the installation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My grandkids destroyed their computer. Don't know what they did but getting "setup is starting services" and it's frozen. Am not able to get past it. Did try one suggestion:

On the same error screen press SHIFT+F10 and it will open up a black Window. (a command prompt window) 2) In the black windows type the word "regedit"(without the inverted commas and hit enter. That will open the registry editor. In the Registry Editor.. Browse to.... HKLocal machine/SYSTEM/SETUP/STATUS/ChildCompletion, and after highlighting childcompletion,on the right hand side check for setup.exe. if the value is 1 change it to 3.(by double clicking on setup.exe and changing the value shown in the box). Then close the registry editor and then also close the black window. Then click on OK for the error and the computer will restart and the installation may complete.

This did not work. The kids did not make backup discs either. To avoid this nonsense in the future I purchased OEM version of Windows 7 Home Prem 7 SPI 64-bit. I figured I would just changed the boot sequence to CD-ROM and just do a clean install with the new disc.

Lots of luck, it accesses the disc, but still does "Setup is installing services" and freezes there. Apparently, it's still trying to do a recovery? I don't know how to get around this. Any ideas? Would getting a new hard drive (more money down the drain) and then do a new install get me out of this mess?

I started to do a full system recovery on my son's Acer Aspire 5750z, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit using the (4) Recovery DVD's we made when we bought it. Everything was working fine through the first three discs. I was called away while the third disc was in use (maybe 10 minutes) and when I got back to the machine, the window was up asking me to remove disc 3 and insert disc 4. I did, and in the 4 hours and 15 minutes since then, nothing has happened. The Acer eRecovery Management (v8.3.2) Window is up. Step 5 "Restore Progres" is highlighted. The elapsed time counter is continuing to run (currently at 5 hours 8 minutes and counting), the "Restoring System" bar is full and shows 100%, and the "Updating System" bar is stuck at 2%, which is where it was when I put in the 4th disc. I am tempted to shut down the laptop and start all over again, but I am afraid that it will mess something up if I do...what should I do at this point?

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

I started to do a full system recovery on my son's Acer Aspire 5750z, Click to expand...

Why?

I am NOT, sadly an expert with the Acer recovery program.

I don't know if stopping & restarting will damage your computer.

Which service pack of W7 HP 64 bit?

Logically, what choices have you; wait for X # of hours, or shut it down?

If you shut it down, boot to the W7 Recovery Environment & try a repair. It might find the files necessary to believe that W7 is currently installed.

Run Diags from Acer, that are probably built into the computer.

Hi everyone,

I turned on my computer and i got a black screen saying "windows error recovery"
I clicked on "start windows normally" and the logo starts to load.
Then a black screen comes up saying "setup is starting services" and a pop-up titled "Install Windows" reads: The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click "ok" restart computer and then restart the installation.

I press ok, and the computer restarts normally but then it stays stuck at the setup is starting services screen, with the Install windows pop-up.

How can I fix this?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all, and thanks in advance for helping.
About 2-3 weeks ago i purchased a toshiba satellite L500D laptop, all went smoothly through the setup etc, and it was running fine untill, a couple of days ago i turned it on and whilst starting up a screen came up saying "setup is starting services" after a couple of minutes it was still on this screen so i left it running thinking it would start eventually, but when about 9-10 hours later it was still on this screen i decided to turn it off and retry. But now everytime i try and start it up it goes to that same screen, and then a little box pops up saying "the computer restarted unexpectadly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows instalation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the instalation" so i press ok and it just returns to the same thing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i am not the best when it comes to computers.
Thanks again

Hi guys, wonder if anyone could shed some light on my issue please?
I am trying to reinstall XP SP2 on an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop, as it would not boot up correctly and hang. I tried initially to repair the installation from the Disk, but setup would load all the drivers and when it gets to the "Setup is starting windows" everything stops and just hangs.
I have a copy of unbuntu and i could boot to that off the live CD, and could browse the HDD contents. I then used the partition manager thing in unbuntu and made the disk one partition (thinking the partitions were screwed and opted to try to start from scratch!) This however has not cured the problem, and now im out of ideas... other than trying to install unbuntu only to prove the HDD isnt knackered!

Any help is greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance

A:Windows 7 Laptop installation "Setup is starting services"

Start over using the latest official Win7 installation media for your licensed version provided in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and follow those steps closely to get and keep a perfect install.

This time delete all partitions during the booted install. This is explained in tutorial.

I ran Spybot Seek and Destroy on my Gateway laptop running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. My startup time had gone to a crawl as had the time to load pages in explorer. After Spybot was done it reccomended to "quarentine" certain files which I did and saved the registry of those files. When I rebooted to finish the process Windows would not retart.

I tried several restore points including one I created before running Spybot, but Windows still wouldn't start.

When nothing else in the recovery options worked I opted to reinstall Windows from factory default settings. Part way through the installation process I got the error "Windows cannot complete installation on this hard drive. Windows will restart installation after restarting."

Since that point, it is freezing at the Setup is starting service screen (or it is moving at such a slow pace I can't tell. It's been about 2hrs).

Any ideas?

A:windows 7 reinstall freezing at "Setup is starting services"

Spybot lost favor about ten years ago when it bloated up and got buggy and has never been recommended here where we favor newer tools like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

What should have been a simple restore operation might have been complicated by having a Factory install which is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilties which interfere with better versions built into Win7. Most tech enthusiasts will not run such an install but instead Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Everything needed is in the blue link to get and keep a perfect install, including the tools and methods which work best with Win7.

I found this forum by searching for my problem and someone made a post here seven months ago with the exact same problem, but the thread has been deleted.
"Hi all, this is my first post here and I really need help.
Im installing Win XP Pro (SP2) on a HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop. Everything runs fine until I start installing windows xp. The cd boots and the "Setup is loading files" goes through but then stalls at "Setup is starting windows". Waited for 2 hours just in case and still the same results.
From what I can gather this points to a hardware problem. I have tried different ram modules and removed the battery but all to no avail.
Could this be a processor or motherboard problem??"

I did everything the person above me did and then I took the hard drive out, reformatted it and tried installing XP SP2, Windows Home and the recovery cd supplied by HP. Every time it is gets to "Setup is Starting Windows" it freezes. I know the hard drive is working since I tested it in another computer. The reason I needed to reload XP is the notebook would load and get to the Windows XP loading screen and then freeze. It wouldn't boot in safe mode either.

Any ideas?

Thanks

A:Windows 8 installation stucks at"setup is starting" window

So when you started to do a fresh install, you allowed the Win setup to do the format etc, when at setup stage, did you try delete and then recreate the partition?

Try Brink's Tutorial on Clean Install - Windows 8

Hopefully this will help you. A power surge and then sudden issues with hard drives is never a great sign.

Hey everyone,

Yesterday my install of Windows started having issues. The system would periodically BSOD after the Windows startup logo appeared. I've tried every type of safe mode, last known good config, and startup repair, but to no avail. I had a Windows 7 install disk from my desktop (OEM) from when I built it and decided to try starting it from that. However, while I can get to the install page which has the install button as well as the repair option, when I click on either one, nothing happens.

When I click on the Repair button, it goes to a blank blue wallpaper (the standard win7 wallpaper) and sits there, doing nothing for about 5 minutes, before I just shut it off. Then I tried the standard install option, but it hangs on the "Setup is starting..." dialog and just sits with the loading cursor.

Other info:
I cannot get into the desktop, so anything that requires that will be no good.
I have tried Seatools to see if it's an HDD issue, but it would not open properly, even though I burned the .iso correctly.
Both installs are x64, so the disk should work.

Thanks for any ideas.

A:Windows 7 reinstall stalling at "Setup is starting" and other problems

You can try these steps for when Windows 7 fails to boot

Or you can skip to Clean Reinstall Windows 7 Factory OEM - same steps with your BUilder's OEM key.

If it continues to stall at boot, try another ISO from the tutorial just above, burned with tool given to DVD, or written to flash stick if that fails. This will tell us if it is the installer.

If not try resetting the BIOS to defaults: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

There are quite a few problems with my system right now.
I'm unable to run windows normally thanks to the "BOOTMGR is missing" error.
When I try to reinstall Windows 7, it hangs on the "Setup is starting..." screen.
When I open the cmd.exe using SHIFT+F10, I am able to access all of my drives, except for the D: drive. When I attempt to execute any command on that drive, it does absolutely nothing except give me a blinking cursor on the next line. I've let it sit there for about an hour, and still nothing, along with the "Setup is starting..." screen.

Even if I could get past the BOOTMGR screen, I would be stopped by a blue screen that says: UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME.

Does anyone have any idea about what I should do?

A:Unable to reinstall Windows 7 - "Setup is starting..." hang.

Is there maybe a program I can save onto a disc that would work on startup that could wipe out my harddrive? I really think the D: drive is the problem.

I have an old PC (Specs in the Computer specs next to my username)

It was working fine for a few days but now it gets stuck in a boot loop. Safe Mode options don't work, repair windows doesn't work either and rather then trying to fix it, I decided it needed a format after not using it for about a year.
I've burnt Win7 onto a Disc and onto a USB using the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool. Configured my BIOS to boot from both which it does, however right after the "Windows is loading files..." it moves on to "Starting windows" and stays on there (the WIndows logo doesn't show either). Can't figure out why. I've fallen asleep for about an hour waiting for it and from past experiences it usually doesn't take that long..

My current computer uses Win 8 so I thought I'd give that a shot via USB and DVD and same issue. It shows the Windows Logo however the Loading circle just continues to spin. I've been stuck there for about an hour now.

I had a look inside the computer while it was running, everything seems to be connected right (hasn't been touched) so before this post, I unplugged everything, gave it a nice clean (just a cloth[not wet]) and placed every thing back in.
ALSO what's the difference between these options:
USB - FDD
USB - ZIP
USB-CDROM
USB-HDD

My problems began probably a year ago. Started having BSOD's regularly with startup issues. Nothing I tried fixed anything. Had it in a shop where the first time I was told he "fixed some things" and seemed to be working for about a week and a half when it went back to BSOD's and startup problems (getting stuck at the "starting Windows" screen, etc). Took it back to shop where they wiped it and replaced Windows. Within a few weeks I was back to the same issues. At this point I actually just put the thing away and solely used my husbands computer. Last week after not touching my laptop for several months I had to use it due to a major accident with my husbands. The thing worked perfectly for 9 days, PERFECTLY. Then it started randomly shutting down with no rhyme or reason. After a couple of times doing that it started getting stuck at the "starting Windows" screen and wanting to run Startup Repair.

I have an Intel 945GTP motherboard running XP Pro on a SATA HDD that, until last week, worked just fine. Then, it decided not to boot up one morning, in either regular or safe mode.
It won't boot from the CDROM drive either.
It does boot from floppy.
I've replaced RAM, taken out all non-essential hardware, replaced HDD cables.
HDD can be recognised in another system.
Mouse and KB are not usb.
I removed the HDD partition, intending to reload XP, but the load hangs on "setup is starting windows" and never goes anywhere - i left it overnight, just to be sure.
I repartitioned and reformatted using a 98 disk, just for kicks, to see if it'd work. Yep, boots to c:\>
HDD manufacturer's diagnostic reports no errors.
I have put in another, new SATA HDD, as well as a new IDE HDD. SAME issue.
HELP?!
