Laptop screen only works in safe mode

Q: Laptop screen only works in safe mode

Hello,I have an HP Pavilion running Windows Vista. The problem I am having is that my screen will only come on in Safe Mode. If I try to start regularly, it gets just to the point where my desktop should open and the screen goes black. I have been trying to self diagnose the problem and I think I may be close, but I can't completely solve it. I am running a NVIDIA Geforce Go 6150 Driver. In reading through some forms I found that this may be a problem so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall my computer opened fine in normal mode and automatically downloaded the driver again. After the driver installs it requires a restart and then will not open in normal mode again. I have went through this process 3 times and each time I get the same results.Although in SAFE MODE, here is my DSS Log:.DDS (Ver_11-03-05.01) - NTFSx86 NETWORKRun by matthew at 9:58:36.92 on Sat 04/23/2011Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.19019Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium 6.0.6002.2.1252.1.1033.18.958.311 [GMT -4:00].SP: Windows Defender *Enabled/Updated* {D68DDC3A-831F-4fae-9E44-DA132C1ACF46}.============== Running Processes ===============.C:\Windows\system32\wininit.exeC:\Windows\system32\lsm.exeC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k DcomLaunchC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k rpcssC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k secsvcsC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcsC:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k NetworkServiceC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNoNetworkC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k NetworkServiceNetworkRestrictedC:\Windows\Explorer.EXEC:\Windows\system32\wbem\unsecapp.exeC:\Windows\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exeC:\Users\matthew\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\U6E410NE\dds[1].scrC:\Windows\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe.============== Pseudo HJT Report ===============.uStart Page = hxxp://www.yahoo.com/mStart Page = hxxp://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=71&bd=Pavilion&pf=laptopmDefault_Page_URL = hxxp://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&tp=iehome&locale=EN_US&c=71&bd=Pavilion&pf=laptopTB: {9D425283-D487-4337-BAB6-AB8354A81457} - Preferred Solution: Laptop screen only works in safe mode

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

There is no malicious software.I have gone through Malwarebytes,TDSSKiller,Kaspersky, etc.Nothing was found.
It doesn't entirely freeze.I can move the cursor which usually is a blue circle.Sometimes more things like highlight icons w/ the cursor or the clock keeps going.
Sometimes when I press ctrl+alt+del and open task manager, the programs that didn't open when I clicked on them will open up.Most times pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing though.
It works fine in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking.I have disabled all start ups and every service except Microsoft ones and restarted in Normal mode.Still the same problem.
I used checkdisk and it said nothing is wrong.
There are random times where it works fine.No specific time of day.It just happens. Most times it is this way though.

A:Laptop only works in safe mode.Hangs w/ blue circle in Normal mode.

Did you disable the startup items and services in Safe Mode, and then restart in normal mode?

Essentially what you are trying to do is a Clean Boot, this has to be performed in normal mode.

(2)  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

Step 2

(1)  Click on the General tab.

(2)  Click the Selective startup option.

(3)  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

Step 3

Not sure exactly what happened but couple days ago the laptop started to hang up or freeze when I tried to run any application, such as a browser, control panel, and even task manager. If I need to turn it off I have to hold the power button which I know is not good but otherwise I would not be able to reboot. If I go into safe mode I can use the computer somewhat sluggish but I can at least open up programs and even get on the internet. I cannot do system restore as this had been turned off. I had a conflicting driver issue that I installed, but that has not helped, I dont know what else to do. Please help this is my only computer.

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.9.218.0 (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/606422/windows-vista-x64-bksod-after-login-or-no-access-in-normal-mode-suspect-mse/. The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.

I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Above all, I wonder if any other security software with real-time protection is installed (or perhaps improperly uninstalled)? Of course there is a possibility that your issue is something else...

I really need help on this one. When I switched on my laptop ( Hp windows 7) , it started as usual and it screened the message " starting windows" as usual , after starting I was expecting the log on screen to come. But there it was, just a black screen while the standard windows tune was heard, there was NO log on screen. It was just black.
Then I went into safe mode with networking. And that's all how it works now.
Please I would be really greatful if you could help me out.

So basically the laptop is functioning all fine in safe mode but wouldn't go further the " starting windows" message in normal mode.
Please Please help

Hey guys, I seem to be having trouble, and I'm not terribly inclined with laptops and computers, mine is an HP G62 laptop, and that's about as far as I know about it. The other day I went to use it, opened it up, I had 3 tabs open (google chrome), and I tried to open a new tab. All new tabs were freezing, and my itunes had frozen as well. I tried closing the laptop, hoping it would go into sleep mode, but it didn't, it stayed running. I reopened it and the screen stayed off, so I did a hard reset (holding the power button to turn it off) and started it back up. I started it in normal mode, and logged on, but after loading from the log on screen, it went to a black screen with just the cursor, and stayed there. I did another hard reset, and started it in safe mode, and now this is how I'm currently running. I've tried disabling the display drivers and restarting, that worked momentarily, but froze shortly after. Next, I tried a system restore, which did absolutely nothing, and then I ran chkdsk and, again, nothing. After all this, I decided to try uninstalling the display drivers, which, once again, did nothing. This seems to be all the info I have gathered from online, and through friends' help, there seems to be nothing left to do that may fix this problem. Anyone have any idea on where to go from here?

A:Black Screen in Normal Mode. Only Safe Mode Works.

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

When booting up the OS in normal mode, windows 7 pulls up all the normal desktop settings, icons, etc. but when you click on ANY program shortcut to run, the computer hangs up in perpetual hour-glass wait mode. Not even Clt-Alt-Del will work so a power-off force shut down is necessary. So we use the laptop in safe mode with networking and all is well.

We performed an extensive malware/virus clean up with one of the Tech Support Guys recently and I have included the link thread below for your review. We are confident it is not malware/virus related since the Tech Support Guy could not find anything on our computer hindering performance. Our conclusion is something is wrong with the OS. New screen is LP156WF1 (TL)(C2)
It is up to date with drivers. I have no clue how to fijx this

If the screen in working in the bios and safe mode, then the screen is indeed working.

If you boot into safe mode with networking, can you redownload the display adapter driver?

You could also try Clean Install Windows 7

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/596146-solved-windows-cant-boot-black.html
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.

All 3 safe mods work fine.

Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.

Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.

The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv

Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.

I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.

Anymore information for me, or from me that you need, i would be extremely happy.
Thanks for your time.

Hello,

My computer is restarting over and over again. I can run it in safe mode and have been using it to get work done that way, but I need to figure out a real solution to the problem. I'm hoping someone here might be willing and able to help.

My laptop is HP G60 Notebook PC with Windows Vista Home Premium. Service Pack 2. 32-bit Operating system. Pentium ® Dual-Core CPU; 3 GB.

A few days ago, I plugged my computer into one of the two HP printers we have. I've used this printer many times before. The paper ran out and rather than filling up the printer, I just decided to cancel the print and unplugged my computer quickly from the printer. When I picked the laptop up to take it into another room, I tilted it to the side and heard a strange sound-- like a fan dying or system failing. The computer was restarting at that point and then it didn't stop restarting. I was able to start it in safe mode and safe mode with networking just fine.

I ran spybot, malware bytes, and avg. No infected items showed up.

So, I started reading forums about printer drivers, thinking that was the issue. So I went into the driver information and printer information on my computer. I was not able to roll back the printer driver, so I just deleted the files for the hp printer that I was using when the computer crashed. That didn't help. And, I didn't really know what I was doing in the first place by removing the drivers for the printer.

I then tried to do a system resto... Read more

A:Laptop Restarting over and over again. Works in Safe Mode.

When I picked the laptop up to take it into another room, I tilted it to the side and heard a strange sound-- like a fan dying or system failing. The HDD could have been damaged.. that sound you heard could have been a platter being scratched.. I would suggest running a HDD diagnostic on it. When you attempted the system restore did you try to do it through safe mode or the recovery console? One thing you may try is a check disk.. but if that platter got scratched that drive needs to be changed..While in CMD via safe mode or recovery console"chkdsk /f"The system should schedule the check for the next reboot.

I have an acer aspire laptop. Last night firefox stopped responding and from that message the whole system froze. The only way I could shut it down was to take the battery out. I turned it on, entered my password and when it loaded froze immediatley. I tried again, again the only way of shutting down was to take the battery out, and when turned on I was greeted by a black screen and nothing else. I left it til this morning and the same thing happened, completely frozen. Tried safe mode and it worked, but normal mode would not work at all. Tried a few hours later and it worked for about 2 hours and then a blue screen with white squiggly lines appeared and it restarted. It then froze again once restarted in normal mode and hasn't worked since yet safe mode works fine. I tried system restore but there was no restore points. I've searched the internet for an answer but nothing. Can anybody help? Please!

A:Laptop hangs but works fine on safe mode

Could try running MSCONFIG in safe-mode, de-select start-up applications & non-windows services (selective startup) and see if that gets you past the lock-up issue. That would at least help identify if its a possible software / service issue on load.

Additional information, if disabling everything appears to fix the lock-up issue, then its simply a matter of process of elimination. Re-enable services & programs one at a time, and see if you can determine which program is causing explorer / desktop to hang.

Hello all, my BSOD problems are thankfully a thing of the past now! However, I have a new issue that has been quite confusing to me. When I log in to Windows normally, I'm presented with a black screen and a cursor. Through findings of my own I've found that it's because windows explorer is failing to launch. Upon trying to start it by opening the task manager via CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and opening a new task, I'm presented with an error code that tells me windows explorer failed to launch (I believe the code was something like 00x000002...I'm currently at work and don't remember it exactly off the top of my head). So I attempted to restart in safe mode, and that worked perfectly fine. I ran my virus scanner (Kaspersky Internet Security) and found no threats. I then attempted a system restore, and that failed to complete for an unknown reason. The next time I tried logging in to windows normally, it gave me the black screen again. After some frustration, I gave up on trying to fix it for a while and shut the computer down. After turning it on, however, I was able to open windows explorer manually through the same method I mentioned earlier, and it actually opened this time. I ran the sfc scan through the administrator's privilege command prompt, and was told that there were files that were corrupted but could not be repaired. I don't have a windows CD and am not sure where to go from here. Should I start my computer on safe mode with networking... Read more

A:Black screen with cursor, safe mode works

Here is the CBS log I mentioned in the OP. Not sure which information is relevant, but I had to trim most of the document and left just the most recent stuff from the very bottom.

Another note is that upon starting in safe mode, I received a message saying that System Restore did not work, and that an unexpected error occurred while the computer was attempting the restore.

A:Blue screen on startup, only Safe mode works

Some reasons for Blue Screens
New hardware - software installed.
Device driver - Video driver - corrupted - faulty.
Faulty Ram - Overheating - Dying hard drive etc.
======
Can you get into Safe Mode with Networking?
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe
======
Post the Minidump files
Create a new folder on the desktop and call it dumpfiles [or something similar]
Look in c:\windows\minidump
Copy the last 4 minidump files to that folder.
Close the folder and right click on it and select Send To Compressed [zipped] Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.
Attach the zip folder by using the 'Upload a File' button.
======
Run a Mem Test.
http://www.memtest.org/
Scroll down to 'Download (Pre-built & ISOs)'
'Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)'

Download the ISO file - then burn the ISO to a Cd.
Start the Pc using the Cd and run the memory test overnight or for at least 8 passes.

It is best to run a full scan on individual Ram sticks if you can.
Or run the test but if any errors are shown - then remove all sticks of Ram - test each Ram stick one at a time and test them in different slots.

Guide to using Memtest86+

======
Run system file checker.
Click Start
Type cmd in search box
Right click cmd.exe to run as administrator.
Type
SFC /SCANNOW
Press Enter

ok i was getting help with this another forum but that forum is currently down and the last thing they had my try was to try the last known good configuration if that would boot into windows, well i tryed that and it didnt work, this all started after i used combofix in safemode to remove some virus on my computer and now i cant boot into windows normally so if anyone has any advice please let me know thanks.

A:blank screen on boot up but safe mode works

While booted into the safe mode try looking for any error or warning messages in the Event Viewer, which is in Administrative Tools in your Control Panel. You click either application or system on the left side in Event Viewer, then I do click view, filter, then click to uncheck the box for information, apply and ok, so then only warnings and errors will show on the right. Then just double on one of those to open to see the details of it. Maybe try to run the system file checker tool in safe mode too, click start, run, type in this; sfc /scannow , and include that space before the / too.

Strangely, my computer booted just fine last night. My sister checked her Hotmail, and chatted on MSN for a short while. I turned it on this afternoon and it hangs at the Windows XP logo screen. The blue bar in the loading box is still moving, but windows never gets any further. Safe mode works OK. AVG scan shows no infection. I restored my Master Boot Record just in case, but it still won't boot.

I have service pack 2.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi All!

I have a windows 7 laptop (can't find my original Windows 7 CD's that came with the comp).
I turn the computer on, enter my password, and everything loads up.
But, I can't open anything once I'm there... Not the desktop icons, not the toolbar icons, not even the start menu! Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work either!
I had some malware that I removed using malware bytes.  After I removed it, these problems started!  Before then the only problems were some lagging and random video ads playing on pages I was visiting.
I also found "MyPCBackUp" program, which I was told was a virus.  I deleted that too.
The only way I can get ANYTHING done is to open in "Safe Mode with Networking."  I can use most of my programs including anti-virus and chrome.
I've been told that a virus may have corrupted the operating system.

PLEASE HELP!
I'm not sure what to do!

Hi there!

I'm here after spending most of yesterday trying to figure this out myself. I should have just come straight here because you guys have ALWAYS fixed my computer problems in the past.

My computer:

Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2; HP Pavillion m9100t; Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3 GHz; 2.47 GB Ram; 32-bit OS; NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; DirectX 10

Problem started when I turned on my pc yesterday morning. I had been walking around doing things and did not notice that it had failed to boot correctly. It was on a repair screen for some time and eventually notified me that it could not repair startup problem. After this I rebooted again and told it not to go to repair but to boot normally. It then went to a blue screen page which of course went by too fast for me to see much. I rebooted, this time in safe mode with networking. I set my computer not to automatically restart and then rebooted again so that I could read the bsod. I wrote down the stop error codes and rebooted to safe mode with networking again. Long story short, I didn't know what the error codes were, but I figured I could search them online. I ran all of my virus and malware scans, got the most recent windows updates (had already been at service pack 2, but there were some other updates) and started surfing the web for solutions. This was done over a period of time since I was also doing other things in the house. I did find that once in every 4 or 5 reboots, it will re... Read more

My laptop, a Gateway NV57H, starts up fine, but after 10 minutes or so it becomes incredibly slow and everything is unresponsive. I used to get a bluescreen (kernel_inpage_error) after it being in this state for a while, but I researched it, ran a memory diagnostic, and found out one of my sticks of RAM was fried. Replaced both, doubling the capacity to its limit (8GB) and I still have the problem. When task manager is open during all of this, it shows that I'm only using 1.6 GB of the 8GB of RAM available, so I don't think that's the problem. I ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow from the command prompt, both said there were no errors found on the hard drive. I've ran malwarebytes from safemode a couple of times, it found some trojans and potentially unwanted programs and such that I quarantined and deleted. that didn't seem to fix the problem, and scans now come up clean. I'm running another now, just in case. The laptop runs fine in safe mode, no lag and no errors. I researched some other threads where people had similar problems and they said it was caused by having two antivirus software trying to run at the same time. I have kaspersky, but it's outdated. I turned off windows defender because it was trying to scan, and then started back up and the problem still wasn't fixed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to fix it? Thanks!

A:Laptop becomes unresponsive after a few minutes, works fine in safe mode

If you don't have an antivirus program running at all times, you need to fix that ASAP.  Two good free ones are Avast and AVG.  MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials is another free one.
To further inspect your system, please download and run Speccy from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/speccy/ .  After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.

Good luck.

Hi y'all.

Recently my laptop running on windows 7 home edition started acting up. I boots up fine but once i get to windows then it gets tempremental. Sometimes it works fine until the screen saver comes on, sometimes it does not even open a browser window before it freezes.

I had trend micro titanium antivirus that expired last week, after which i installed avg. I thought it was the culprit which i uninstalled and installed avast and superantispyware. I ran both and they found a few problems that they claim to have resolved. Still the computer was not working well. Again in safe mode i ran kaspersky and it found 3 trojans that it removed but still no improvement.

I would really appreciate your help in resolving this. I have followed the instructions from the sticky and below are hijackthis log, DDS.txt, Attach.txt file and ark.txt file:

I have tried many reboots but or doesnt change anything. Getting a little desperate now. Does anyone know a fix?

This is my wife's laptop. The problem started recently, about a week ago When she starts the laptop, often (but not always) there is the hp logo, and then the screen goes black. It does not always happen, and sometimes it happens when the laptop has not been used for a few hours.

The screen seems to wrok okay in safe mode, bit has problems in regular mode. The laptop is about 4 years old, came with Vista, but now has Windows 7 premium home edition. I reinstalled windows 7, but the problem has not been resolved.

Grateful for your advice. Should this laptop be discarded? Repairs are quite expensive in Switzerland, and rather than spend good money on an old laptop, I would prefer getting a new one, if an easy solution can not be found. HP G60-235DX Windows 7 (32 bit), 3GB RAM, plenty of free HD space.

Many thanks.

Hi folks!

Unfortunately, my 2 year old pushed some buttons on my Lenovo B590 laptop and something isn't right. Upon start up, I get a black screen with a moving cursor. Ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up the task manager.

I double checked the boot order in BIOS and that looks OK.

Restarting in Safe mode works.

I also updated the video drivers, and (strangely) I was able to restart in normal and everything looked fine. However, when I restarted again after that, I was back to the black screen in Normal.

I've been Googling all morning, and done what I've found. If anyone else has any other suggestions, I'd be grateful for them. And if you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer was working like a dream and has been for about a year now, when yesterday I booted up after running Windows update, like always, logged on like normal, only to see a blank screen with only my mouse cursor. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctrl+Shft+Esc work to bring up the Task Manager. I am able to boot into Safe Mode just fine, but of course unable to uninstall the Windows updates to the .NET framework.

I have tried System Restore several times now, both from the Safe Mode and from the start-up recovery options accessed via F8 upon system startup. From the same menu, I have attempted Startup Repair but alas, Windows does not detect any problems (go figure, right? ).

I have ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check if my hardware was going bad, and upon completion, it rebooted, once again, to a blank screen after being prompted to log in. Mouse works, nothing else does. Upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I am greeted with the following message after waiting roughly 5 minutes:

"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

^Pressing ESC makes the message disappear along with my mouse, so that I am staring at a completely blank screen.

I am on my friend's MacBook Pro right now, I'm really hoping someone can help, but I mu... Read more

I have scanned through the other posts and the closest thing that I could find to my problem seemed to involve a video card going kaput. I'm just hoping maybe one of you can confirm this for me before I take my pc up to the repair shop and they try to sell me something I don't need.

So, here's what is going on. Yesterday my Dell Dimensions (2500 I think?) was working just fine. I noticed the fan was running for quite some time so I got up to check and just as I suspected virus scan was performing a scan of my system. After the scan was completed I exited out of virus scan and figured the fan would stop running shortly. A few hours later I notice the fan is still running, so when I go to check my pc all I see is a black screen. The button on my monitor is flashing between yellow and red, so I restart my monitor and the test page comes up. It says my monitor is working and to check pc connection. After that I manually restart and the windows logo comes up but then we're right back to that black screen. I am currently in safe mode with networking which is obviously working just fine.

Now -- about two weeks ago the monitor that came with this system died. I snatched an older monitor from a spare pc in the house and attached it to this system. I don't know if that has any bearing at all on the events that have taken place but I wanted to let you know that I had infact made a change recently.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Currently having problem, in that when I turn on my laptop, it loads very slowly, and when it does eventually reach the sign-in screen it freezes within ~5-10 seconds regardless of whether I have time to enter password or not. I have tried disabling some unnecessary startup processes in safe mode, still no luck though. Every now an then it does work, an will continue to work, even if I put it into sleep mode an restart through that. When I try boot up in safe mode it works fine without freezing. I am running Vista also btw. This is all the info I can think of, I am not incredibly computer literate, but if any more info is required I shall gladly post here if I know how to. Thanks.

A:Freezing on User Sign In Screen [works in safe mode]

Since Safemode works fine, the problem is likely a start-up app.

Use SysInternals AutoRuns - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s...rnals/bb963902

Go through "startup" entries 1-by-1, uncheck a box, see if you can boot into normal Windows.

from another thread i read to download the service pack 4 for my windows 2000 pc.....i downloaded it and attempted to load it into my harddrive......there was some error on my pc so the entire service pack would not load at all but it was still on my computer sitting there. i looked and tryed to delete it since it was unusable....it told me that my computer might not run properly if i deleted it.....but since it never really was loaded onto m hardrive correctly i did not think it could do much damage....i deleted it....i logged off my computer.....a few hours later i came home and turned my computer on....within about 15 seconds of turning it on a blue screen popped up saying it could not find the source or the entry to the computer?? ...bottom line is that it would not boot correctly at all. i attempted many times yet the same thing happened. it also prompted to boot in safe mode. i did that but the blue screen popped up again. i am typing this on back-up computer that we have. i was wondering if anybody knows what i can to with my computer to fix it or get it fixed professionally which is a strong option. But I was wondering to see if there was anything that I could do before bringing it to a computer pro.i am fairly advanced with computers but this boggles my mind and I do not know what to do. if anyone knows anything to help me it would help alot.....thanks...

Firstly I'm on Win7 64. Over the last few weeks I've noticed that after starting up my laptop, and logging in just fine, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds-- my cursor would appear and I could move it around, but the screen would be black. After 10 seconds or so, the Win7 GUI would load just fine and there I would be.

I restarted my PC at 5AM this morning and it did the same. All I did at that point was send an e-mail via Gmail and shut it down again. At 2PM I went to startup my PC and everything went as usual except the PC never left that black screen with the responsive cursor.

I searched here and found that problem many times, but with one difference-- my PC starts fine in Safe Mode.

I used Advanced System Care to fix some registry errors and am currently running a Malwarebytes full scan.

It might be worth noting that I recently installed Batman: Arkham Asylum and as it was frequently crashing, followed some advice to enable everything at startup, which I did, fixing my game problem. That was around the time the black screen first started showing up, and I assumed it was a result of more things taking place during Windows startup.

Thanks in advance.

When safe mode works fine but a normal boot fails, it usually means that a driver is at fault... I would suggest that you run a disk check. You can set it up in safe mode in Computer, and right click on the C drive. Select Properties, tools, check now. Check both boxes for trying to repair... Restart normally

Hi folks.
I've scoured the internet looking for an explanation but can't find anything.

It was working perfectly well, closed the cover, opened it again five minutes later and only grey screen.
Graphics are fine until log in screen and then everything is grey, I can hear the start up sounds though.

Booted it in safe mode and played around with resolution settings but didn't get much further than that. Got the screen replaced on it a few weeks back but no new software or issues with the new screen.

It's an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC running windows 7.
Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 Grey screen immediately before log in, works perfectly in safe mode

In Safe Mode, uninstall the Display Adapters by right clicking on them and selecting "Uninstall"
If it offers to uninstall the drivers, check that box.
Once that's done, reboot into normal mode to see if you can see the display.
