Q: Screen flashes black; then Windows unable to load Elevated UAC or Logon to Admin account; On reboot the system cannot find the file specified C:\Users\TEMP\ntuser.dat

Two similar events have happened to me recently, all while logged into windows; I use only one account on this pc. On both occurrences the Screen flashes black; after that, in particular the first occurrence i was not able to access the admin account via
UAC; Group policy is set to ask for password upon elevation, good and well, but the password dialogue box said that the admin account was locked out. After rebooting, I was unable to login, with the exact same error appearing; A system restore fixed this issue.
Unfortunately I did not note the exact string of the error, and I see no references to it in event log except for this " Event 6000 The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> was unavailable to handle a notification event." However
the error "description" was quite different error on this second occurrence.
Here are some event errors that occurred during the first error:

Rebooting the computer a second time fixed this problem; no system restore necessary.

It appears this may have happened to another PC on the same lan; when using a temporary profile apparently quote "this causes the user to be presented with the default profile with no personalized settings. " Another PC on the network had also
booted into windows and was presented with the default interface; I can only assume this person was hacked as well.

Preferred Solution: Screen flashes black; then Windows unable to load Elevated UAC or Logon to Admin account; On reboot the system cannot find the file specified C:\Users\TEMP\ntuser.dat

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This is a strange bug I seen once before in windows 7.

I was downloading a video file off megaupload with firefox. Firefox makes 2 files for a download the file itself and a temp file (where all the data goes to till the download is done.) So I pick the dir where I want to place the file and I download it, but right when it finishes I get a error message saying it dose not have access to save the file. So there I get left with a 0kb file and a finished temp file. I can move the temp file and edit out the .part to use it, but the blank file can't be deleted. It clams I don't have administrator access to delete the file, but I only have a admin account setup/in use
What can I do to fix this? The last time it happened I deleted the temp file restarted and it was ok, but I need a better solution for this stupid error.

I am trying to print something out of IE and when doing so I get an error message stating:
Cannot find 'file:///C:/Users/username/AppData/Local/Temp/...:blank'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.

When I can see the full error message the path ends in /Temp/Low/Randomfile.htm.  I have tried changing the integrity level to low on that folder and also tried turning off protected mode in IE with no luck. I deleted the folder and recreated it and
did the same with the integrity level again, with no luck.
What else can I try?

Hey,

I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

Thanks,
BC

A:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

Hi. I've just installed this ... Windows 10 Pro x64 yesterday.
It's been 20 hours since I've started installation and it is still not enough to get it working as it should be working.

So there is no hack or some bypass to run fully elevated admin (or at least so I can create files in my C:\ drive without hassle) and run MS Store?

You can laugh, but please don't call me an idiot...

I accidently deleted the name associated with one of my admin accounts, not realizing the entry was supposed to be there. So, I created a new account and thought I could copy the ntuser.dat files to the new account. Problem is the ntuser.dat files did not have my old
profile, it had a new "default" profile. (Luckily, I've been able to recover most of my files.)
My question is:
It looks like maybe I recovered an old registry . Any chance there is
an old copy of my ntuser.dat file(s) that I can copy to my new user
profile? If so, how would I "reload" the recovered registry.
Thanks so much,
Sarah

I purchased a system with dual GTX580's about a year and a half ago. I have had issues with system crashes (lockups, no blue screen, and no alt-tabbing out of them) almost from the beginning. Since I am impressed with some of the technical responses I have seen on threads in this forum, thought I'd reach out for help before I pull what hair I have left out.....

I tried literally every different bios update available, every single driver release Nvidia has released, too many clean windows installs to count, MSI Afterburner/EVGA Precision (video voltage increases, clock decreases (removing EVGA superclocking), replaced the SLI bridge, different ram, different powersupply cables, different fan speeds, and so many other things over the past 1.5 years it's rediculous.

In preparation for trashing the cards, I pulled them out and put my old cards back in. These are also EVGA brand, 8800's, also can run them in SLI with the same bridge, and not a single problem. This is while running the same driver release (clean install though) as the 580's.

So I put one 580 back in, both slots 1 & 3, and to my surprise it worked just fine in either PCI slot. Tried the other 580, also works fine when alone. Put them both in, put the bridge on, and it crashes right after Bios loads, before it even makes it to the windows logo/login screen.

Seems to have gotten worse over time (was just during intense gaming, next it's when in windows but not gaiming, sometimes at the Windows l... Read more

A:GTX580 Black Screen/Reboot in Games, Windows Logo, even at Bios load

A 1200 Watt PSU should be plenty for your setup as long as it is performing as expected. If you have had problems from the beginning with the cards, I suspect the SLI interface itself is bad on either one or both of the cards. How do they run with the bridge removed and just the cards themselves in? You mentioned running one at a time, but have you tried running with both cards in without the bridge?

Ok, now I've tried Prevx's fixshell.exe program, didn't work. I tried starting in safe mode. It brings up cmd.exe and will provide task manager but it looks ok to me. Still no fix. I've looked at my HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and the Shell string REG_SZ was already set to explorer.exe as I've seen be a possible fix elsewhere.

Unfortunately, it did lock up my other user once now and has given me the black screen with cursor with the new user once after that. A restart allowed me to log in successfully to the new user.

Vista Home PremiumService Pack 1Bear with me a me on this, as it is my friend (who doesn't speak English very well) who is having this issue and I do normally work on a Vista machine. I will try to interpret everything she says here. The computer has two accounts on it, one has administrator privileges and the other is a user account that belongs to her son. Whenever she tries to log into the admin account, after entering her password, the screen goes black. We managed to circumvent the black screen and reveal the desktop by bringing up the task manager with control + alt + del, then ending and restarting explorer.exe. Her son's account logs in and works fine. The second problem (and I'm not sure if they are related) which ties our hands from diagnosing/resolving the first is that she's unable to access any system tools or run any files which require elevated security. She can't install anything or run anything with the security icon on the admin account (her son's user account has heavy parental controls enabled so attempting to install/run anything from there is a moot point.) The UAC prompt which is supposed to come up when trying to access these things never does. She gets the Vista spinning blue "working/please wait" mouse animation instead and nothing else. We think the problem happened occurred after the last Windows update, somehow something was corrupted, because there were no other recent changes to her system (the computer has been in storage for a week.) Hey all. I'm trying to create a batch file to run an MMC using an elevated account. I'm a novice when it comes to batch files, but this is what I have so far is:

runas /user:domain\account "mmc C:\SuperConsole.msc"
pause

While I'm not including the domain or account info in this post, the file location is the same. I put the pause in it so I can see the error that I'm getting since I know that the MMC is not popping up.

So, I run the batch file and the CMD prompts for the password. I input the password and I receive the below error:

RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - mmc C:\SuperConsole.msc
740: The requested operation requires elevation.

This is where I am perplexed. The account I'm running as is an elevated account. I've tried everything from removing the quotes, using my standard account, and placing mmc outside the quotes. I've also tried running a CMD as my elevated account and it comes up fine. Thoughts?

A:Issues with batch file to run MMC with elevated account

Just to confirm, are you running the .BAT files as administrator?

Try placing the .BAT file on your desktop, and then right-click and select 'Run as administrator'

So, here is my story,
Yesterday I wanted to install graphics drivers form Dell website due to some problems that I had.
My laptop info: DELL_Intel Core i7-4500U CPU_RAM8GB_Windows 8.1 .
Graphics Dr.: Intel Graphics Family & AMD Radeon 8850M.
During the installation of a 'new' AMD Radeon 8867 - if I remember well - , my screen started to flash and then got black. My laptop was on with black screen and the cursor flashed. I turned it off, then back on , and it was the same story....nothing.. I pressed Shift+F8 and Nothing.
I can only access to BIOS (F2) or to BOOT MANAGER (F12)... Unfortunately no Safe Mode is an option. In fact, how is it possible to go to safe mode with a black screen on Windows 8??
I would appreciate any suggestions to fix the problem.
Thank you!

We have a new dell business computer (don't have model with me now, but its an optiplex with serial and ps2 ports in the back, purchased a few months ago with i5 processor + 8 gigs ram) and our hard drive went bad and dell replaced it. Then a little later we had an issue with our windows genuine activation saying its not genuine when we had windows 7 and it blocked the admin account on the sign in screen (only account). Meaning you can't do anything, there are no other options, no option to enter key code or make genuine or anything like that.
So I reinstalled Windows 7 (Dell CD) + downloaded drivers (except sata drivers which it didn't show it needed in device manager and I was pushed to finish quickly) from dell  today, thought all was well. It showed genuine and activated, etc...
Employee upgraded to windows 10. Guess what? The login screen when you turn on the computer has once again blocked the admin account which is the only account. What is going on and how do I fix it? This is ridiculous. I can't even login to try to fix it.

edit: forgot to mention that this computer was added to a domain at work, not sure if that makes a difference or not

I was gong to change a file under the path c://users/admin, but it's not there - only "c://users/<my name>/......." was (and a "public" folder under my name). I need to modify a file in a folder further down the path, but unless I can find the "admin" folder, it's useless.

Any reason I can't find this?

A:Can't find "c://users/admin" file

What are you trying to do?
The double slash after C: isn't needed, but assuming you're using windows explorer that won't matter.

Nonetheless, there simply isn't an account folder called Admin unless you have created an account called Admin. If you can explain what you're after, I might be able to suggest where your mysterious file actually is.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help. Windows won't load at all, I just get a bsod flash up. Same thing happens with safe mode. For some reason I can't even system restore or format/reinstall windows from my cd. (after I click install nothing happens just sits at the loading screen)

Any suggestions?

This BSOD will not let you to boot to the desktop, in either mode.

The most typical causes of a stop 0xED is a failing HDD or dome mismatch boot records. If the second one is the issue, then a clean install should be possible, which is not as you said.

Take both the short test and the long test. Let us know the results.

Currently unable to use laptop at all because it has got itself into a state where I can't reboot it to reset. When "on", the keyboard backlight is on but the laptop has a black screen - and pressing caps lock for example does nothing (should there be a status light?) and pressing Fn+F9 does not toggle the keyboard backlight.  The battery charge light comes on when I plug in the power supply as does the power light when the laptop is supposedly "on". The obvious thing to try is to hold the power button for 5-10 seconds, but after depressing power for 2 seconds, the power goes off and continuing to hold the power button es nothing further.  Pressing power again after a delay to switch back on brings it back in to the same black screen state as before. Can anyone help?  I saw a previous answer where the solution was to open up the back of the latop to remove the CMOS battery for a couple of minutes - but have never opened up the laptop before and would rather not as still under warranty. Machine is an Acer V3-574G-56LU, and I have Windows automatic updates switched on (so has Windows 10 anniversary update for example), and I regularly use Nvidia GeForce driver update for the graphics card.

A:V3-574G black screen and unable to reboot laptop

Quick update on original post. Found the battery reset pin button on the underside, and depressed it for 4 seconds as per the manual advice.  Laptop is still in the same state - so am beginning to suspect the laptop is trying to boot but not able to (no Acer logo appearing, have tried inserting a USB recovery key but nothing different happens). I suspect it is bricked - and have raised a warranty repair request.  But if anyone is able to suggest anything, I'm willing to give it a go!

So, Long story short got my computer back from my brother last night and... Go Figure nothing seems to work. I started by trying to log into my account (admin acct) starts to log in but then displays "The User Profile Service failed the logon". At that point I turned to the internet for help:

Started here: You receive "The User Profile Service failed the logon

I thought sounded like something I could do, but sadly had no users that could actually complete this task. I would open the regedit go to my account then when I tried to edit the said ".bak" file it would tell me I didn't have permissions and anytime that I was prompted for my password I would type it in and it would accept it as far as to go away but wouldn't do anything, I could type in wrong passwords and it would show an error for said wrong password.

At this point I restarted my computer set up my built-in Administrator, and logged in as that admin. I tried removing the ".bak" (it let me without prompting) but after restarting it did nothing. And when I looked in the regedit the ".bak" was back(also I had reset the RefCount, and the other key(can't remember name)).

SO I don't want this to get too big of a thread starter heres a quick list of what I tried:

Made new user, can't log in with same issues.

Tried to edit users in control panel, I get no prompt(because using built in admin) but nothing happens when I click on users link.

Well just updated windows to find I now get this error message when loading up windows;

Quote:

Could not load file or assembly 'sorttbls.nlp' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find this specified File.

Now this is coming form ATI Catalyst, I know so cause the error message has the new CCC logo. Now what stinks is its apparently something wrong with Microsoft NET, yet I have googled the problem and tried many fixes but with no avail. Right now I am pretty
mad cause I have CCC which wont work anymore, Zune, and also my windows is freaking out. Now I have spent the last hour trying to fix this dang issue and need help as I am stuck... Please help, ANY help at all is much appreciated.
Also this was after I had to restore my system because the new Microsoft updated screwed up my system...

A:Could not load file or assembly 'sorttbls.nlp' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find this specified File.

Hi,

I've searched the sorttbls.nlp file in my computer, and find that this file should be a component of the .NET Framework 2.

Also I find some information in the AMD support website:

• The AMD Catalyst™ Control Center requires that the Microsoft® .NET Framework SP1 be installed for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Without .NET SP1 installed, the AMD Catalyst™ Control Center will not launch properly and the user will see an error message.
• When installing the AMD Catalyst™ driver for Windows operating system, the user must be logged on as Administrator or have Administrator rights to complete the installation of the AMD Catalyst™ driver.

Please refer:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst112ReleaseNotes.aspx

You can try the steps below to resolve this problem.
Firstly, please go to Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a program -> Turn Windows features on or off,

• If the checkbox of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 is not been selected, then select it and click OK.
• If the checkbox of Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 is been selected, unselect the checkbox first, click OK. Then open the Turn Windows features on or off again and select Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1, click OK.
Then, please try to install the AMD Catalyst™ Control Center again.
If the above steps still not working, please perform the steps in this blog to fix the .NET Framework 2.0 in Windows 7:

Hello, when I sign on to my computer, then click my user, it won't load. There is just a black screen with the cursor. I've tried using ctrl+shift+escape and typing explorer.exe, but the task manager immediately has an error and closes. I think the problem with this is that all the files with an .exe close within a few seconds after opening.

I CAN use the computer with the administrative user. I can access my files and transfer them over to my admin account. The problem with this is that all my preferences and settings (particularly my firefox bookmarks and settings) are gone.

Does anyone have an idea on how I might fix this?

Thanks,
Brad

On my Windows Vista 32 Bit version, i have two accounts. My admin acc and my guest acc. About a week ago my admin account stop working, when i logged into it the screen turned black and it would not display anything, except the task manager when pressed. The computer has started to freeze and go ridiculously slow. When i log out a blue error message displays and it kicks me off. I can however get acces to my guest account. When i log on a weird application called hn wants to run (this started to happen when first when the problem began.) I do not let it run. I have run multiple ad aware scans and Panda antivirus scans as well but they do not pick up anything. I would just like some help to stop my computer from going slow and to get access to my admin account.

A:Vista Black Screen Unable to access account

Have you tried logging on in safe mode? If not, try doing so. After you start your computer, but BEFORE windows starts, press the F8 key, and, I believe, an Advanced Options menu comes up. Pick the option for safe mode.

If Safe Mode does let you log on, run your anti-virus program, doing a *full* scan.

When i log on a weird application called hn wants to run (this started to happen when first when the problem began.)Click to expand...

While still in safe mode, check to see if this file is in the startup options - click start, then type "msconfig" (w/out the quotes) into the search box, then enter. The System Configuration utility should be on your desktop - click the "startup" tab, then look through everything that is checked, and see if you can find the mysterious HN application. If it is there, and there's a check mark next to it, UNcheck it, then press apply, then ok. Then windows will ask if you want to restart, click "restart now," reboot normally (without pressing F8) and try logging on normally.

Let us know what happens.

Good luck!

Mollie

Hey I recently had a problem with reformatting a partition. It was solved by relocating the pagefile.sys.

Now whenever I boot upon login it says the system has made a temp pagefile system. I try adjusting the size of the pagefile system to much more, less, or equal to amount of ram (4gb). Doesn't seem to solve it.

dropbox has stopped working too; it seems like that malfunction may be related to the pagefilesys

I have three users (all with local accounts) on my PC and some time ago I disabled the auto-login using the process described here:
Solved Help with multiple users login screen!

This worked perfectly as the users appeared in alphabetical order as follows:
UserA (with the user picture in the centre of the screen)
UserB
UserC

Recently, the order has changed to (I don't know why!):
UserB (with the user picture in the centre of the screen)
UserA
UserC

I would like to change the order back to how it was originally, as UserA is the primary user of this computer. UserA currently has to click on 'UserA' and then 'Sign In' rather than just 'Sign In'

Note: UserB is the only account that is password protected.

Does anyone have any ideas how to do this?

Many thanks

System = WinXP SP2

When I logon at "user screen", logon is to "system" admin account instead of personal users account.

Only two user accounts on this computer...both have admin rights...but initial log on by either logs on to Admin account instead of specific user desktop. If user logs off, and then logs on again, the correct user desktop will then be available, but it requires two logons

I have sought help here on other forum (see link) and posted some images there of screens I see displayed, but thought that perhaps a HJT log analysis might point to the cause of this logon problem as I have not made any progress in fixing this logon problem.

I have upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 10. During the procedure a screen showed that Dell Access had to be removed before Windows 10 could be installed.
It was removed, and everything else went smoothly.
Now during logon, at the login screen, the system will take a while to initialize, and say "Failure to initialize". Luckily I am able to login using a password.
I want to use the fingerprint reader to login. Dell says that this system have no issues with upgrading to Windows 10, but not now. So how can I solve this problem?
I will like to do either the following:
1. Get the fingerprint reader working.
2. If it cannot work, I want the logon screen to stop trying to initialize and just use password to logon.

Also, I am getting 2-3 nos of the same user on the login screen. There is only 1 user on this computer but I see mostly 2 but sometimes 3 of the same on the lower left of the logon screen. I also want to remove the extras. Not an issue, but I think it may be related to the above as well.

Thanks.

Problem:
Following the Windows-7-HP-64-bit logo screen, system hangs in perpetual state of "pre-login". Black screen, normal-resolution mouse pointer, no alt-ctrl-del capabilities nor any other interaction other than mouse movement.

This follows a large burst of 63 updates (Don't ask why...Bad Habits!) and then reboot. Now NTBTLog.txt reports vga and NDProxy drivers do not install (not that the latter really matters), no safe-modes give me anything, no low-res-vga boot, and so on...

System hs worked great for 5+ years.
No new H/W or S/W or changes.

I cloned the disk and can now work off of the clone to attempt any fixes.

I did have adequate anti-malware s/w running, but I'll have to go through that whole "process" I realize...

But I also know this is a sort of a common problem lately (although in many different varieties when it comes to specifics) - So I thought maybe someone would be able to steer me to a fix that doesn't involve a system reinstall.
Any ideas...
vga.sys?
Oh, and no restore points are present!
Anything I might not know about going on here?
Something you might be able to enlighten me about!

I would appreciate any help you could provide. And I'd like to figure out the source if possible, rather than a simple standard or duck-tape type of solution. That's a last resort. And then I'll not know what to avoid!

Thanks in advance!
