Since installing SP2 cannot play protected content in media player

Q: Since installing SP2 cannot play protected content in media player

I have recently installed Service Pack 2 and since then I am no longer able to play protected content in media player (i.e songs I have purchased legit online)
I had WMP10 and when I went to play the songs it gave me an error message saying cannot play songs as updated security download is not available.
So, I decided to download WMP11 thinking this would be the most recent upgrade I could get. But, still having the same problem, although now it tells me "Windows Media Player cannot play the protected file because a security upgrade is required. Do you want to download the security upgrade?"
So I click on yes, and then another screen comes up, "The file or device that you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be upgraded. Click upgrade to download and install the required component." So I click on Upgrade and the error box goes away but nothing happens?? Just says down the bottom right that it is still trying to open "opening media".
I thought maybe my computer was having a bad day and was taking ages to download or something, but I went away and left the computer for a few hours and still nothing had happened, and I have restarted computer and tried again but still same issue??? Can anyone help?? Thanks so much.

Preferred Solution: Since installing SP2 cannot play protected content in media player

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.

I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.

I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.

The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.

On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

Does anybody know of any solutions?

Hello all, I tried to reply to the thread with a similar title to provide a correct answer. So I am reintroducing the topic and providing an answer that seems to work.

Problem: I want to use media player with very minimal frame. Many answers are "play full screen". But I know that media can be played in windows media without any skin, very minimal framing and floating media controls over the video that auto hide when you move away.

Press Ctrl-2. This puts you in a skin mode. There should be menu items at the top: File, View, Play, Tools, Help
Choose View->Skin Chooser
You are now in the full media player experience. Do not choose a skin. Click the 3 square & arrow thing at the bottom "Switch to now playing"
Viola! No skin, minimal borders and floating media controls.

I have no idea why this is not a simple option. I think what I am choosing is the most basic skin, maybe not even intended for use. But this is my favorite player, super simple.

for some reason, windows media player like packaged 12 of my mp3's... i burned them on to a cd format and then recopied them back into another computer.. and when i tried to use find album info, it tries to set the same album to all of the tracks. like track one is supposed to tbe marroon5- harder to breath, and track 2 is suposed to be missy elliot-work it.. but if i click just on maroon5, and select find album info, it finds the "songs about jane" album and tries renaming harder to breath to the first track in that, and work it the second track in that.

could i have possibly copy-protected the music or something like that while burning a cd? is there a way of getting around that?

That?s very interesting. It cannot play DVDs but you want to use it s default player. ;)
You know what, forget WMP and use something else. I recommend you to test ?VLC player?. It can read all video formats and you don?t need to install some codecs. It is for free.

If you will be happy with it you can set it as default player for video format files.

A:Media Player won't play anything!

Here are the series of actions you will need to take in order to reset your media playback settings to their default values (As they should be after a fresh OS install).

You will first need to obtain Zoom Player v3.10 or newer.

Run Zoom Player and open the "Options / Filter Control / Management" tab and click on the "Registered Filter Manager" button.

Select all the filters in the list (highlight the first filter, hold shift and press the End button on the keyboard).
Press on the "Unregister Filters" Button.
Close Zoom Player.
You will now need to re-register the filters that come with the system on a fresh install. To do this, run this batch file.

Use gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ to determine what codecs you need. Zoomplayer can aid in this as well.
Only install and register the codecs you require!
Some codecs play multiple formats and can reduce your need to install extra codecs. Too many codecs playing the same file formats can result in filter errors and stuttering playback, although this can be fixed by editing the registry and adjusting the codec filters merit, it's very difficult to fix. Codec filters go by merit rules, if you have 4 codecs that will play the same file, the one media player chooses to play the file is the one who has a registry entry for the highest merit for that filetype. This system can result in co... Read more

I'm running WMP version 9.0 on a P2 350 MHZ computer. I have 256 RAM installed and are having problems getting the player to play audio samples from the web. For example: I'm interested in hearing a certain track on amazon.com's site; I scroll down to the CD's track listing and are offered a chance to "listen" to a certain song. I'm assuming that it isn't the ENTIRE track so it shouldn't take long to steam it. I have a DSL line and it takes a long time to try to get the song to play so I just quit out of it. One time I waited nearly 5 minutes and still no music. Is there a reason why WMP 9.0 isn't working with my setup ?? If I click on WMP (launch the program) my video and audio works WITHIN that but not when I try to sample a song from another website. What can I do to fix this ? Is upgrading to version 10 the answer? Before I purchase a CD online I'd like to hear what's on it first. You can't download these samples, you can only listen to them. Any help is appreciated.

I have recently built a new PC and installed Windows XP Home with SP2.

I have installed a fairly standard CD-RW/DVD combo, all mainboard chip support software has been installed. DVD'S play back perfectly and all sound functions seem to work fine but when I attempt to play back a CD a box comes up indicating that Windows cannot play the file because the file path may be wrong.

I installed a secondary media player just to make sure it was nothing to do with the drive and it played ok, so I know that technically everything is fine, codecs are installed and the drive can be found. I uninstalled the secondary player and went on the hunt for a technical solution from Microsoft, the explanation below is all I can find.

C00D1197: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Hi folks,

Sorry I honestly don't know where to turn anymore with this.

My Windows Media Player won't play WMA nor WMV files anymore.
It keeps telling me that the codecs aren't installed
WM9 codec
Windows Media Audio 9 Standard
Windows Media Audio 9 Pro

The problem I keep running into everywhere is that under Vista WMP11 is an integral part so there's no way to re-install/fix it. Codec packs like K-Light or Vista Media Pack don't fix this either.

So I'm just generally stuck with trying to find any solution to fix this.
After almost a week of trying to solve this any ideas would realllllyyy be welcome at this point. I'm hoping to avoid re-installing Windows if at all possible.

System info:
Operating System: Windows Vista? Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2 (6002.vistasp2_gdr.100608-0458)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 3326MB RAM
Video Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series (Dark Knight edition)

Try a system restore.

I never had any good experience troubleshooting software DVD players. I've pretty much given up using them altogether. My computer is the only computer in the 21st century that cannot accomplish a simple task: play DVD movies. The problem is that every DVD player I use always seems to not play the movie. But just freeze and crash my computer. I've tried many different players; all the same result. Power DVD just froze immediately when I start it up. MPC will say playing with no playback, and VideoLan (VLC) won't do anything at all. VLC is **** for RPC-2 drives. A common thing I'm seeing here (and this is a theory), is that it's taking these players a very long time to break the encryption key on the DVD to play the movie. The DVD is a perfectly legal Region 1 DVD that I just bought at a Best Buy. There are no scratches or augmentations to the disc. The DVD works perfectly fine in any other DVD player, just not a software DVD player. So I ruled out a defective disc. I also tried other DVDs and ran into the same problem: not giving any DVD playback. Some DVD's will play for a short minute and then freeze. I then turned on my hardware, an NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A. I downloaded and flashed my optic drive with the latest firmware and that didn't change a thing. The drive has no problem reading any discs inserted into it. I play a lot of games that are DVD Roms and the movie I bought does register as being inserted into the drive. I'm out of optio... Read more

A:DVD's don't play. Media player problems

I've seen reports of "codec conflict" from using those handy-dandy one-size-fits-all packages.

I use VLC with no problems. It stores its entire codec collection in its own program folder instead of installing codecs into the Windows folder.
I don't use codec packs ever, I only installed the few stand-alone codecs I needed.

Can Windows Explorer read the drive to see the VOB files on the dvd disk?
If so, you could try using GSpot or MediaInfo to load up a VOB, and see if you have missing or corrupted codecs.
Do you have the option of borrowing an external USB dvd drive to rule out that your drive is not at fault? When my dvd drive was dying, it could still read CD's, but not DVD disks. Lens-cleaner disks seemed to help for a while, but eventually it was toast.

Whenever I used to click on a link for a music video or video clip, my Windows Media Player would automatically open and play it. For some reason lately, it won't. The only thing that happens is at the bottom of my screen it says "downloading from www..." I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but this is driving me crazy! : Any suggestions?

A:My Windows Media Player won't play...

That doesn't sound too good. Could be something to do with Virus/spyware. But first, if you right click the media file, open with, and select windows media player, does it do the same?
Also, have you tried just opening Windows Media Player manually? What happens then?
If none of that works, go throught the "Having problems with spyware/viruses?" in my sig.
