Iomega not so Mega

Q: Iomega not so Mega

I have an iomega 500gb external hard drive that just recently decided to stop working with my Macbook. It has worked flawlessly for almost a year but last week it decided to stop. It will still turn on whenever plugged in, light on the back will flash and it is not recognized. I can find it in disk utility but it doesn't let me do anything with it. I have tried all the ports with different connections, usb, firewire (both firewire ports) to no avail. Looking for help as there is a lot of important data on here. Thanks in advance for any help.

Preferred Solution: Iomega not so Mega

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Will it work with any other Computer/Operating System, but not with your Macbook?

i've had vista ultimate for 5 days now and had nothing but problems. after one day the boot time increased from about 1 minute to 5 minutes!!! how can this be? i installed all the windows updates and the ultimate extras...i havent fiddled with the registry or anything. does anybody know what can be causing it to boot so slow. it sits at the windows boot screen with the scrolling bar for about 3 minutes. i have tried things like defragging, disk chk and disk cleanup. nothing seems to work though.

i wish bootvis worked on vista. that did wonders for my xp boot.

if anyone is able to help me i will appreciate it very much.

I'm looking to put a new processor in my MSI mega PC
It is about 2/3 years old and has a celeron 1700 in it at the mo.
A couple of apps I want say 2ghz min so I'm thinking of upgrading.

Can anyone tell me if it fits one Celeron will it take them all?
I have seen a new one:
Intel Celeron® D 335 2.8GHz SKT478 FSB533 256kb

Its the "D 335" bit that confuses me, I know my motherboard supports 533 FSB.

any help appreciated.

A:Msi Mega Pc

You will need to find out the exact model of the motherboard of the PC to find out what CPU's it supports. Many old boards do not support the new Celeron-D's. You'd also be better off buy an older Pentium 4 rather then a Celeron. The Celeron's are budget CPU's and don't perform as well a Pentium 4 running at the same clock speed.

Ok my pc, that I'm using now, keeps randomnly restarting and wont turn off, will only restart. It has been doing this since I installed Wincleaner complete pc care, and the anti-virus with that dtected and deleted a virus, but there were no problems before that.
So I got rid of all of the wincleaner software except the antivirus, and still its happening, it wont let me go to a restore point, and each time te pc restarts a message comes up sayin its recover from a serious error, and I send the error report which microsofts site says is corrupted.

One of the things that seem st trigger it to restart is when i put in a music cd and windows media player loads and it restarts.

I hve windows XP, any ideas on how to fix it?

Have you tried using System Restore from a command prompt in "SAFE MODE"?The symptoms you describe could be malware related or they could be due to hardware or overheating problems caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing power supply, underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, drivers, dirty hardware, etc. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to restart on a more regular basis. If your not finding any malware then its sounds like the latter problem. When was the last time you cleaned the inside of your computer? Dust restricts the airflow and prevents proper cooling. This in turn can cause overheating and faulty processor fans which can result in unexpected shutdowns, random restarts, booting problems, etc.Open your machine, check all the connections and make sure the fans are all operational.Check the heat sink on the processor to ensure it is not blocked with dust or debris.Remove the CPU's cooling unit and clean the fins on the heat sink that sits under the CPU with a can of compressed air.Inspect the thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink as it can break down over time so.Remove the cards and RAM modules, clean the contacts and reseat them.Feel the CPU heatsink when it powers down. It should be warm to very warm but not hot.See "Cleaning the Interior of your PC" and the "Illustrated How to Replace an AGP Video Card" (use as a guide to clean & reseat).A word of caution about... Hello all

Nice to be here.

I am very paranoid when it comes to my desktop, partly because I don't exactly have the cash lying around to get a new one if something happens with this and partly because I do online shopping etc so don't want anyone getting hold of bank details.

The reason I am here is to ask such knowledgeable people a few questions in the hope that I can slightly allay my fears.

Yesterday Avast discovered a few viruses in its boot scan, one of which was a Trojan which can download other nasties as and when it pleases - a downloader, I'm guessing?

Anyway this whacked me into full paranoia mode and so today I have using the Acer recovery console to transform back to factory settings (the OS being vista when I first got this comp) and then installing 7 via the windows discs. My computer seems very happy right now, certainly a bit more speed and less loading when not doing much at all.

Trouble is, am I completely fine now after these admittedly quite drastic but still pretty simple steps? Is there any step in the process where the nasties could have flown through to the 'other side' and still be able to get me? I've heard of bios, boot viruses - are these a myth? Also can viruses be sent simple 'down the line' via your ip address and modem? Can they get onto the recovery drive itself, rendering a factory restore useless in any case?

I also now have two operating systems, one being this, 7, which is on my Acer DATA (F:) drive ... Read more

I've heard of bios, boot viruses - are these a myth?Boot viruses, i.e. malware that persists and infects via the Master Boor Record (MBR) exists, it's not a myth. Some variants are quite prevalent in the wild.Bios viruses, i.e. malware that persists via the BIOS or other firmware is more of a myth. There was malware in the wild that corrupted or erased the BIOS settings/memory on Windows 95/98.There exist research papers of proof-of-concept malware on modern Windows that installs itself in the BIOS. But I've only seen anecdotal cases of real, in the wild malware that infects the BIOS. I've not found research papers about real BIOS malware found in the wild, neither do the virus libraries of different AV vendors describe malware that installs itself in the BIOS.

When i got it back it was acting weirdly it started freezing chrome wouldn't load pages ( so i uninstalled it and reinstalled it and that seemed to fix the issue)but it's still freezing a lot. then a few hours ago i did a hard(or cold) reboot because the system had come to a complete halt and when it came back up and i typed my password in it just showed the "Welcome" sign and that blue circle thing and would not logon. so i rebooted... It didn't go into a loop, like that virus that infected lsass awhile back it just restarted for no reason. Then a week and a half ago my screen got broken, so I sent it in for repairs. I got it back a few days ago and it was acting oddly ( I noticed some of the symptoms i'm about to lay out on my tower pc aswell) Chrome wouldn't load pages, and my computer was freezing on and off. I "solved" that by re-installing chrome from scratch. then things took a turn for the worse. The whole system locked up, so I had to hard re-boot my laptop. When it started back up and I had typed in my password it just froze on the welcome screen with the blue loading circle. So I hard re-booted again. This time it logged on but froze immediately forcing me to hard re-boot yet again with the same result: freezing at login. I'm running XP Home on my HP Pavilion (actually my folks' machine), slightly tweaked using Black Viper's guides. A few minutes ago, the damn thing slowed down to a CRAWL like I haven't seen in years. I was running MSN Explorer, Mozilla Firebird, Norton AV, Agnitum Outpost (free version), and AOL IM. I opened Task Manager, and my CPU usage was jumping around like crazy (from 20% to 90%), and my page file usage was steadily increasing at a rate of about 1 MB per 3-5 seconds. I closed my 'net connection, shut down all running programs (except Norton AV) as quickly as possible, and tried to reboot (through the start menu). After struggling to close Norton, Windows told me I was out of virtual memory. I freaked out and cut the power from my surge protector. At the next startup, Windows ran a check on my hard drive's "consistency." Everything seems to be running fine now, I just want to know: WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?

Any ideas?

I recommend you run a System Restore and pick a date before performing the Black Viper's guides instructions.

Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Let's get you cleaned up....

1. Download this file from one of these locations:

* IMPORTANT !!! Place it on your Desktop.

2. Go to Start -> Run and then paste in this single line command & click OK"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v cbxvv vwsbchu winhza32

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries if they exist (make sure you do not miss any) and click Fix Checked

Your friend is having troubles because there are no security patches for Windows XP on this system. Without these updates, they will continue to be infected upon connecting to the internet. This system is still infected.

I see no evidence of an AntiVirus program on your system. This must be resolved. A good free AV program, AVG is available. Download, install, update and run a full scan.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.

I am interested in both but I am seeking help from the MT community on which of these (From A Security POV) would be a better choice, as I will be utilizing the paid version of the most secure option. I do currently have a free MEGA Acct. But when it comes to a Paid account I want the best security for my buck, thats why I am asking here brfore I step up and pay for either option. I am more interested in which will protect my files and data best.
I don't care about storage size, sync perks, free or paid, ect.
I don't think MEGA is hosted in the US, while DropBox is hosted in US (I think) as their main is in Cali and MEGA is in New Zeland. Correct me if I am wrong, and does this have an impact for either of these from a security standpoint ?
Thanks for your feedback in advance.

Ok so this is my 5th time trying to post this so i'll be brief. A friend organised this setup for me through a computer superstore. The setup is:
Motherboad: Mini ITX P55 T36
Processor: Intel i5 3.2Ghz
RAM: Incompatible: OCZ 800Mhz 2Gb x2 Compatible: Mach Xtreme 1333Mhz CL9 4Gb x2 (the compatibility will make sense as you read on)
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5450 512Mb

Ok so my friend had assured me all components were compatible and would work together. But I was getting alot of application errors as well as BSOD's (Stop error messages). So I decided i'd need new ram and when I looked at the motherboard manual it turned out the OCZ sticks were in fact incompatible. I then purchased the Mach sticks which should be 100% compatible and work with no problem. After I installed them (Unplugged power etc before installation of sticks) and reset the bios and cmos data. The computer would power on and power off before reaching bios (we'll call it code 16 for later reference).

So I tried one of each stick together and the computer boots fine, I then swapped out the OCZ stick and the computer booted but displayed no picture (I had the same problem when I tried running the OCZ sticks at different frequency settings, I was troubleshooting the BSOD's before I knew of the incompatibility). I tried to change the bios settings to suit the new set of ram which got me boot up but no display (i'm sure the board thought it was still running the 800mhz sticks at the wr... Read more

Good Evening. I have a brand new HP desktop, two weeks old and am having mega problems loading webpages, connecting to audio streams etc...  I have the AMD A6-7310 cpu. From the time I power up the computer until I can bring up my AOL mail can be 7 to 8 minutes. That is pretty normal for almost all the webpages I try to go to. Frequently Microsoft Edge tells me HMMMMMM we can't seem to fine that page, or something to that effect. In addition I had trouble loading Chrome, but I did fiinally get that loaded, but when I click on the Chrome icon to start a session, I see the circle moving around then nothing, Chrome in no way will come up on this computer. For AV software I am using Norton 360. In my opinion Microsoft's Edge browser stinks. Also Has anyone had any luck wiping Win 10 off their computer & going to Linux? Thanks in advance

My mom has had problems with her Toshiba for a year. She says she has had a problem since she updated to Windows 8, but that's not the case at all. She said the company she previously worked for had offered her a reduced price Word. She got it, and the problems slowly started. She had to buy a new computer because my dad or her couldn't figure out what the problem with it.

There's multiple problems with this so far. Number one, after about 10-15 minutes, the laptop shuts down and reboots itself. The second problem is that it can't connect to the internet most of the time. It says that the network adapter needs work. The third problem is that I can't open the control panel or any side panels in the start button. Apparently, if multiple programs are opened, it'll shut down. I don't have enough money to go out and buy a laptop at the moment, so I'm trying to fix this. Please help me with this monstrosity of malwares/viruses! Much appreciated, MikeNIke

I went to install a program jus overcoming a problem with my monitor, it said hello to the fist and thankfully it decided to work lol. But yes back to the story i inserted a DvD and waited for autoplay to work but nothink happened. The busy light on my computer and on my dvd drive syncronised, which told me that it does know its there, but i go to My Computer and no drive comes up. I went to Device manager and it had a big yellow ! over the drive. I clicked on it and under device status it read:
A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

I clicked on trouble shoot but it kept looping me round again and again with the uninstalling of the driver and making me reinstall but it just dosnt want to work. I cant update the firmware either because the program cant find my DvD drive. Im clueless, I usually fix these situations myself but Im sunk with this one.

Your help is much appreciated and if you need aditional information on my system just ask

Cheers,, HARLEY!

I just bought the Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PC, and it won't work.

I've seen a very small amount of people with the same problem as me (using google)
but no proper resolution has been given.
this is a link to the same problem:

sadly no one ever took the time to resolve it.
anyways, so i know the problem is the game wont run on higher than a certain amount of RAM in the system. After I click "Play Game" on the splash screen, nothing happens, the cursor turns into an hourglass for a second but to no avail.

So i've got to find a way to force it to run on my 3gb of ram, or somehow temporarily lower the usage of my RAM.
please help

A:Sonic Mega Collection Plus for PC

Those sonic games are older.
You might try right clicking the game executable and click properties.
Click the compatability tab and select run in compatabilty mode
for windows 98 second edition.
Select run as administrator.Click apply/ok.
Try to run it.

hi yall.. first of all im new here so i dont really kno how to use everything and the proper procedures etc, but i am currently having a big problem with my laptop.. i have tried eveything and must have spent like 10 hours googling but i cant seem to find an answer.

I had been using my hp compaq nc 4200 laptop seamlessly for 6 months, when all of a sudden, i got a screen at startup with the boot options for xp. it gave me 4 options to boot, which were safe mode, safe mode with network functions, safe mode with system symbol and start windows normally. I thought it wuz just a glitch or something, but when i chose to start windows normally, the screen went black for a sec, loaded the windows xp logo, then rebooted back to the startup options screen. It does the same with every option i choose and no matter what i do. Also this laptop has no cd or floppy drives, just 3 usb ports.

Can someone plz help me or tell me why this is happening. Please if you need more info just post your questions.

A:Mega Xp Boot Problem

In the last 48hrs we've suddenly had problems with so many pop ups that it's hard to do anything.

The other thing is that last night Net Nanny stopped working, it came up with an error message saying it wasn't loaded properly. Then all of a sudden it was working again but the log list was erased.

[I'm running a Pentium 4, 1.5G with 512M RAM, Win98SR2 and Internet Explorer 5]

A:Net Nanny assasinated, mega pop ups

I've never heard of this, but I'm guessing...no, it couldn't...

Right, just to amuse us all, please could you go to http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles and download the StartUp List app. When it runs, it will create a text file in the same directory and contains a list of all running processes. I'm guessing that there is a program running that is doing this. You should also scan for viruses. Housecall at http://housecall.trendmicro.com is a very good online virus scanner. Please post back with the list and any findings from the virus scan.

hello all. i have a barebone system named mega 865 that's from MSI. now, i've searched a couple websites for a good heatsink, but they all look radically different from the one i have. with my heatsink/fan two fans accelerate airflow from left to right, but all the heatsinks i have seen has a single fan mounted on top of the heatsink. this would not work with my system, since it is a barebone and air cannot get through if i installed one of those. can anyone with experience upgrading barebone cooling systems give me some advice?

What do you think of MEGA cloud storage, by Kim Dotcom? Think it has potential? I think one concern is if it gets taken down due to copyright issues and you lose all your files stored on it.

A:What do you think of MEGA cloud storage?

I personally think it's a great site. It's designed to be takedown resistant if I remember correctly, meaning they partner with various companies to store the data. I always prefer self hosting things like this though.

This P4 2.4G has suddenly slowed to a crawl. My P3 600M blows it away. She "thinks" she opened a bad e-mail. She updated McAfee just after the episode, but had an extremely hard time getting it to install properly. The PC resources aren't in heavy use. The HDD doesn't need a defrag and is only half full. I don't see anything glaring in the HJT log, but I'm strictly a novice.

Any help is appreciated.

My son has a laptop on which he has a USB 500GB disk with 420GB of music all cataloged and I want a copy. I am anticipating purchasing a 750GB USB disk that will be my second USB attached disk. I already have one for my main backup. If I do this, what would be the fastest way to transfer this volume of music to my new disk. Know of any software that would clone two external drives? I use Acronis for my backup but I think that will only clone master disk to another drive. I hate to think of his "copy D:\*.* to his e:\:*.* with my disk in second USB port. Thanks for your help in advance.

I operate Win98SE.

Once before with the help of Eddie5659 I successfully copied Streets and Trips to the hard drive and changed the registry to read from the hard drive instead of looking for the disk in the CD ROM.

I wish to do this with Mega ClipArt. ClipArt has two disks that are now copied to the hard drive.

For preventive measures, I plan to copy the registry as before and then follow directions to change the registry as instructed.

To see how S&T's was accomplished, see eddie5659 or davidrs' posts.

Any takers? Thanks,
