Access to certain/secure websites blocked in all browsers

Q: Access to certain/secure websites blocked in all browsers

Hi all

I'm experiencing a problem where certain sites are being blocked by something on my PC. This happens to the same sites in both IE6 and Firefox 2. I've tried disabling all windows firewall and PC-cillin software. I also ran through some suggestions which you can see in the thread in Web& Email (link below). A guy there suggested I try this forum as it appears to be a security issue.

For an example of the problem, I can get access to http://hub.ebay.co.uk/buy just fine. But I cannot access www.ebay.co.uk. Similarly I can't access sites like online banking, expedia, etc.

There's a hijackthis log below if that helps. I've also run Ewido across the system to wipe out spyware of which there were a few bits.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

‘We find that cookie-related vulnerabilities are present in important sites (such as Google and Bank of America), and can be made worse by the implementation weaknesses we discovered in major web browsers (such as Chrome, Firefox, and Safari). Our successful attacks have included privacy violation, online victimization, and even financial loss and account hijacking. We also discuss mitigation strategies such as HSTS, possible browser changes, and present a proof-of-concept browser extension to provide better cookie isolation between HTTP and HTTPS, and between related domains.’

Hi, I have a problem accessing some secure sites requiring a username/ password like hotmail, msn, facebook & ebay. This problem occurs across all browsers: IE7 Firefox and Safari. I can browse other webpages fine.

I can access these websites using my laptop (windows XP) using the same wireless connection but they don't work when using my PC (windows vista).

I've had my PC for about a year now and it's the first time i've encountered such a problem.

I've looked up this problem everywhere and tried almost everything but haven't been able to resolve it. I've tried resetting/ changing my internet security settings, turning off my firewall, scanned my computer with a number of spyware removal programs.

Hi. . .

Nice link - I am a member at that site, but please disregard the "solutions" found therein.

Please run a Vista System Health report in HTML format:
START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Administrator | the black cmd prompt (DOS) screen will appear - type the following:

perfmon /report
It will take about a minute to run... then save it as an HTML file - you will see the default HTML file extension when you go to save it.

Please zip it up and attach to your next post.

What anti-virus are you running and do you have a 3rd party firewall? Do you use the Windows Firewall?

In the interim, do this as a test:
START | type Internet into the start search box | look up top under Programs and select Internet Explorer (no add-ons).

Can you reach those sites now?

Regards. . .

Hi Bleeping Computer,
Yesterday I just turned on my computer and once I got to the home screen my anti-malware program Malwarebytes just went off blocking a multitude of websites such as: kickass.to and a bunch of websites apparently from Russia because of the .ru. The strange thing is that I did not open any browsers neither do I even visit these sites that Malwarebytes blocked. I tried searching the web but nothing seems to come up about any malfunctions of Malwarebytes and these blocked websites. Malwarebytes has never done this before. I also ran scans using Malwarebytes, Super-Anti Spyware, and Avast Anti-virus but all programs says my computer is clean. Also, I tried restarting my computer but the problem persist, this time Malwarebytes is blocking another .ru website that I've never heard of. I want to make sure my computer is completely clean of infections, so please if anybody can spare the time to check my computer out it would be very helpful. I have zipped both the attach log and dds log in a zip folder and attached it to this post. Thank you for your time.

I installed Spybot Search & Destroy on my Windows XP laptop. I am using a wireless connection because my other computer is upstairs and I prefer not to use that one since all my school software programs are installed on my laptop. After installing Spybot I no longer can open any secure websites like windows update, my online college, online bank and anything that I have to login to to get information. I don't know what happened and I don't know how to fix it. I really need to get on my school website. I have some big assignments due on Tuesday. HELP PLEASE!

A:Can't Access Secure Websites HELP!!

Hi and welcome to TSG

It sounds very much as if Spybot is blocking your access to secure sites.

As it is a free prog. try uninstalling from Add/Remove in Control Panel- reboot and see if that helps.

I've found several posts on this subject, but the thread was closed to comment.
I tried the dll installs that were meticulously typed into the posts, but it did not
fix the problem. (I had an error in one of them, so perhaps it was this
that prevented access to secure websites-- email, etc.)

I reinstalled Windows SP3 updates and it fixed the problem.

I've found it useful to have a saved copy of SP1, SP2, SP3 on a memory stick
if ever I need to reinstall XP or if files become corrupted.

I have just searched the archives for this problem and have come across a thread by someone with almost virtually identical symptoms http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?threadid=46424&highlight=secure+websites

Unfortunately it appears that it wasn't solved but I'm hoping that someone else can help. To save you a trip to the other thread, I'll repeat the symptoms for my machine:

I'm using Internet Explorer 5.5 with SP 2 under Windows 98. There are some secure websites that I cannot access. No error messages, the system just "hangs" on a totally blank page with the progress bar indicating about one third transferred. I have tried the IE Repair Tool with no success, have tried checking and unchecking all the security settings in Tools/Advanced, including the SSL 2 and 3. Have tried setting Security level to Medium and pressing Reset. Have installed and uninstalled Zonealarm 3 times and now not use it, do not have a proxy and I have cookies enabled for the secure website I visit.

The particular website is Cabelas - I can add something to my Cart, but cannot get to the checkout where it appears that you select options on a secure form. It tries, but then the connection stops responding and I get hung on a blank page.
EDIT: Just remembered something - I have tried using Netscape Communicator and the same thing happens, so maybe it isn't an IE specific problem?

This is driving me nuts. There are other problems that may or may not be r... Read more

Hi guys, Wondering if someone can help.

Recently i have been struggling to access my hotmail account, e.g when i got to www.hotmail.com it says the page cannot be found. I thought this problem was specific for this site but on further investigation, it looks like i get the same message for all https:// sites via Internet explorer version 7.

I have done all a couple of the usual things to try and solve this problem i.e:

Deleted all temp internet files / cookies
Enabled all SSL and TLS settings on the secuirty tab
checked the cipher strength is 128 bit
Cleared the SSL state
Diasabled all firewalls inc windows

I can access all other sites (http://) with no problem. I also have a laptop on the same network that has no problems accessing https://.

Can anyone help?

Whenever I try to access any site that has https I get 'Cannot find server or DNS error'. I've tried turning the firewall off, adding port 443 to it, turning pop up blockers off, running ad aware and spybot s&d, deleting cookies, TIF files, and clearing history with no luck. There have been 2 secure sites which I could access through https (bestbuy.com and amazon.com), but no others. Any suggestions?

A:I can't access secure websites

Welcome to TSF,

Have you tried to add these sites to the exemption lists in the Firewall and IE Security?

Do you have a pop-up blocker switched on? If so, try turning it off whilst you gain access to the sites.

I used to have trouble with my Internet Banking sites until I did both of these things.

Try them and see what happens.

Post back with your results.

Kind Regards,

When I try to pay for things via paypal, or other secure pay sites (have tried several) the secure pay page won't load - it just seems to take ages to load and then doesn't, leaving me with a blank screen, which says 'done' at the bottom.

The same thing happening on the other computer upstairs - perhaps this is more of a router/cable problem?

Been helped before by you guys, so hoping this can help resolve the problem, thanks!

Any help appreciated...

Can browse fine, but if I want to buy on-line (for example), when I get to the point of 'you are entering a secure connection - others will not be able to see what you are doing' (or similar wording), I invariably get 'page not found', and can't get past this point - happens on every site if I proceed towards a checkout.

Have Sygate Personal Firewall & PC-cillin running all the time, and have their settings on 'normal'; but even if I turn the programs off, I can't get past this point. I have even tried toning down the security options in IE, but this doesn't allow the connection either.

I have been on the MS Knowledge Database & tried what's recommended there, but all to no avail.

Any ideas?

I am running windows xp and my broadband is from virgin media. I have contacted virgin and they say they haven't blocked these sites. I mentioned that I had a problem with an update from AVG, so I was immediately told to contact AVG.

AVG told me to uninstall then reinstall and if the problem persisted, to go back to virgin.

My son's sites are hosted by vidahost, com and two of his sites are dvdcollections.co.uk and bluray.co.uk.

I have tried some suggestions, running ipconfig /all and checking that everything is ok.

I was able to do my checks on these two sites today by using a proxy site, but this is slow, and I really should be able to access them directly.

(Sorry for the double-post: I just read about how to properly post topic titles and descriptions. My apologies!)Hello everyone,Short story: Win XP home ed. DSL int. access. I have Mozilla and IE on my PC. I was running my internet fine until this afternoon when both IE and MF went 'dead'. I can still connect to the internet, but it takes about 30 secs. (as opposed to about 5 sec.'s previously). I can open both the IE and MF browser windows, but I cannot connect to any websites on both IE and MF, regardless of which ones I try to access. Also, I was running both ZoneAlarm and AVG. I thought maybe there was a conflict, so I tried uninstalling AVG and leaving ZA. No luck. Within the last week I have been unable to access a few websites using IE 11, Firefox or Chrome.
I have been on all these sites recently.
In IE I get page cannot be displayed. Chrome says Oops chrome can't find this page

I have Windows 7 Home Premium

At first I thought the site was down so I waited a day or two.
Then I thought it could have been something changed on my computer.
I bypassed my router and wired directly from the modem and still no luck.
Flushed DNS and still nothing

Contacted ISP and after some tests they sent a tech to my house.

He can access the sites from outside with his air card on his laptop but when he hooked up in the house he couldn't.
Replaced the modem and router and after about an hour he couldn't solve this even with his own tech support

At this point, he "escalated the ticket" higher up.

I have tried a number of suggestions that I have found by searching but still no success.

I know there are a lot of very smart people here and have gotten great help in the past.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hey guys,

I am new here - hello.

I am desperately trying to sort out a problem I have with my computer and I really hope that somebody here will be able to help me.

I am a AOL user, using McAfee for my firewall and have a wireless router.

For some reason I am not able to access secured websites (e.g. Paypal, I-tunes, etc). As soon as I type in my password, the system just ignores it and nothing happens. It used to work before, but 2 weeks ago it started on a gfew websites and now it's getting worse.

I have already cleared all my cache, history, etc and disconnected my Firewall, but nothing seems to help.

Is somebody able to help me - it's much appreciated!!!

Thanks, Martin

Hello all,I am a computer technician that is encountering a puzzling issue on Windows 8 Release Preview. I am using the latest version of Google Chrome and have tried accessing popular webpages in IE 10. The popular pages I am trying to access are Facebook, any Google page except their home page (I can access http://www.google.com, but not http://www.google.com/*). I am unable to access these sites. They always time out. The specific error I am receiving in Google Chrome is Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out. I have ran a MBAM scan and came up clean. I am no expert on reading HijackThis logs either, but I have run a log file as well. I was unable to run DDS or GMER because I am running Windows 8. Please let me know if you have any advice on how to resolve this or if you wish for me to post any more logs. Thanks,Kyle Marlin

I am having two problems.

First, I am trying to install Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 but it reports that McAfee is installed. McAfee is not installed but there are some references to it in the registry.

Second, and more importantly, I am not able to access any anti-virus websites such as McAfee.com or Kaspersky.com. I have no problem with other websites.
This started happening on Aug 15, 2009 when I removed an older version of Kaspersky to install the new one. I was able to access the Kaspersky website at least once.

Also I no longer have any restore points prior to Aug 15, 2009.

I am looking for help with the second problem so I can move onto the first.

PS. I have some commercial software that puts activation keys in the root of C:\. Let me know if I should move these to Floppies before any repairs.

Every now and again when I try to open a website a bar comes up in internet explorer that says "Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click here for options." Then I right-click and select "Allow blocked content." and then the site refreshes again and the same thing just happens again.

I wasn't very concerned about this for the longest time but now I have an online class and it's homepage is being blocked by this problem.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.

A:ActiveX Controls? Websites being blocked... Can't access my online classes...

1. Try going to your "Tools" menu, then click on "Internet Options"
2. Click on the "Security" tab
3. There should be a green icon with a checkmark that says "Trusted Sites"
4. Click on it, then click on the "Sites" button.
5. In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" box, put in the address for the website you're going to.

Click "Ok" then "Ok" again to exit out. Try going to the site again.

If that doesn't work, follow the first three steps above once again. Then:
6. Towards the bottom of the Internet Options window, there should be a button that says "Custom Level". Click on it.
7. Near the top of the options, there should be a section for "ActiveX controls and plug-ins". You can try playing with different settings in here. I'm not sure specifically what one it will be, but I'm guessing it's the first one that says "Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls". Try changing that one first.

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Both are followed by specific connection and encryption information, i.e. TLS 1.2.

I have 2 problems which I believe to be unrelated but no virus scan or malware scans have detected any problems. The first started a while ago and my windows update will not connect to download updates. I believe something is blocking it. Also if I go to the microsoft website to download an update manually when I click to download I get a page cannot load error. So I think something is stopping me from updating my version of windows (Vista SP1).

The next issue just started recently and at first I suspected it was just one webpage and it was their issue. Whenever I'd go to the site it'd redirect to an ad, different each time. It would block all access to the site because it'd just redirect to an ad site. Then as randomly as it started, it will occasionally let me onto the site and then again start redirecting. I thought it was the site because it does this in every browser and also on my Mac in safari & firefox. If I try opening with NoScript running it just opens a blank page. Anyway I now believe it's not that site that's the problem because now another unrelated site is doing the same thing.

I tried doing everything listed in the "before you post" thread but RootRepeal will not run. It just freezes at the "Initializing" screen. I did a search and found one place where someone having that problem was told to rename it something else but when I did that I got "Could not load driver (0xc0000035)!".

Hello this is my first post at bleeping computer, because I can usually figure out all of my computer related problems on my own. But this time I am in over my head. I recently got a vundo variant virus that was very difficult to remove along with a clicker virus and a few other random trojans. The first thing that alerted me to this was a message telling me that a virus had been detected. It looked suspicious to me so I didn't install what it was asking me to install and it turns out I was right. It was a false windows alert message created by a virus. I tried to go download a new anti-virus program but the virus I have has made it impossible to connect to any anti-virus or help related websites without using a program called Tor configured with foxyproxy, a firefox add-on. This has also created another problem, when I try to install spybot search and destroy and mbam it wont install because it has to connect to the servers at those websites. I have run many deep and full system scans with avg anti virus, ad-adware free edition, and super anti-spyware free edition. Initially it detected many virus and registry entries which I had to remove in safe mode, but now it detects it as clean. I know I just wrote a novel pretty much but please read it and help me out because I need to be able to connect tech websites and anti-virus websites. For the past 8 weeks, at least 4 secure sites from which I send emails are not receiving them.
These include the bank, library (where I can request or secure books for later) my ISP (!) and a government agency. Two of these have my Hotmail address registered, two have Gmail.

I investigated this myself (a little), trying to send an email from MsEdge, that didn't work either so I'm assuming it's not the browser at fault.

The library IT dept sent the message below which, as suggested, I forwarded to my ISP. I then spent a fruitless hour with a very patients techie who had no idea how to solve the problem. He suggested I try the Hotmail Fix-IT site - I already had, going through all the stages to no avail. He suggested I ask Microsoft what the problem is - I'd guess that's about as probable as getting Gates to come and fix the problem himself. I did look at a couple of MS forums but there... Read more

I'm running Windows XP, and use Panda Platnum ('04) for firewall, and anti virus. For several months I've been locked out of secure websites- 'the page cannot be displayed', experience an error message regarding SPORDER.DLL at start up, and the firewall says it has an error. I downloaded Spy bot search and destroy, but it did not fix the problem. I've spoken with Dell's and AOL's tech support- they didn't solve this. Panda's tech support said the SPODER.DLL error is from their program. We downloaded sporder.dll from a website, but nothing changed. Then Panda said to call Symantec to get the shipped with version (this laptop came with a 90 trial- I thought I had deleted it) off, uninstall Panda, then re-install. I also tried to run Ad-Aware, but the Paanda guy said not to because it can lock up my computer. Help, please!! This seemed very similar to Paul79's problem, but couldn't quite figure out what to do. I need to access them! please help!

Do you have Norton Internet Security installed? If so, check out the last post on this page.

Also check out Internet Explorer Cannot Connect to Secure Web Sites.

If neither of those help, plenty of resources here.

This is my first post - hope I'm posting in the correct forum. I have a huge problem. For some unknown reason, I can't get into secure sites on my home computer. Last week I could, now I can't. As far as I know nothing has changed between now and then. If anyone has ANY advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Not being able to bank online is making me a little crazy. I have looked at several discussions here on this topic. Here's what I've tried so far (and none of it has worked):

Disabled Firewall
Disabled Norton
Made sure time and date are correct
Made sure it has a 128 cipher strength
Made sure SSL 2.0 & SS 3.0 are checked in my advanced options
Made sure my security is at medium

At my bank's recommendation I also disabled my pop-up blocker, accepted their cookies, and downloaded the IE service pack #1.

Nothing! I am getting a little frusterated to say the least. Somewhere on these boards I read this:

"Try this - with all browser windows closed, Go to Start->Run and copy and paste each of the following, hitting ok after each:"

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll ****
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll ****
regsvr32 sccbase.dll ****
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll ****
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

When I did this, the ones w/ stars next to them failed. I have no idea what any of that stuff means, so I don't know if that could be what's causing the problem.

Ok I have a friend who has a win xp os on a dell. She has gone through dell help as well as tech help via her internet provider. What she is running into is, she cannot gain access to a page that is a secure website. (one in which you have to log into I guess) I believe she said that she is getting a pop up that says this page has expired, try to refresh or something on those lines. Bottom line is she cannot get to secure websites. Ex) Amazon.com Any ideas or thoughts on this ?

Thank you
