Q: Ideapad U430 Touch black screen after installing I...

Hi Lenovo Forum, Yesterday when I started my computer it showed the lenovo splash screen and the screen then turned black and nothing happened. I tried restarting the computer etc. but nothing seemed to help, so I decided to do a complete reinstall of Windows 10. Everything went fine until Windows Update installed the IntelŪ HD Graphics 4400 driver. About 80 % into the insatllation it plays the windows sound of something getting unplugged and the screen turned black (like before the complete reinstalllation and format). I have been able to get into the computer again by forcing it to shutdown and turn it on in safe-mode and disable the IntelŪ HD Graphics 4400 driver. I have tried to install an older version of the driver but it did not help. Therefore I am asking all of you if you have experiened anything like it and if you have a solution? I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I got the Lenovo U430 Touch in late August and have noticed that the screen hinge wasn't very sturdy but it was still working fine. But today the hinge is broken and I can't close the screen properly without adjusting it. I didn't drop it or damage it and I looked it up and saw that other people were having similar issues and saying it was a production failure. Is there anyway I can get a replacement or do I have to send it in for repairs? I'm in college and I'll be needing it for a couple more weeks so I can't send it in for repairs yet. And is the $99 fee not covered by the warranty? I called Lenovo support and they said they can't look at my laptop until I pay the fee. I feel like the quality of Lenovo has declined recently. Any help would be appreciated.

A:U430 Touch Screen Hinge

I'm in the same situation as you.  I bought a U430 Touch in August and today the hinge on the left side broke when I closed it.  It's absurd that a hinge would break under normal use and not be covered by the warranty.  As far as I can tell I am going to have to send it in, although Best Buy (where I bought it) was more helpful than Lenovo.  I think Best Buy will pay the shipping and the $99 fee for me.  Since I need the computer for work I am going to wait to send it in.

Over the past two weeks I have been troubleshooting an U530 Touch Laptop (ideapad) - Type 80AS. The problem that im experiencing is a black screen on startup. Initially I thought that it mightve been a display driver issue, I went into safe mode and installed the said drivers and it worked for a little while until about a week later.(Drivers were from Lenovo website other drivers didnt seem to work). I am kind of confused of what could be the problem, perhaps hardware? I would appreciate any input or suggestions. I have tried using an alternate monitor and at times it works for a while but other times it wouldnt recieve any signal. I am running Windows 8.1 and can still boot into safe mode,  These are some things that I have tried:Reinstalling the entire OS from the Lenovo backup - this worked on the intitial startup, on reboot however black screen.Reinstalling drivers - Worked momentarily on and off, moderate success. Trying to login from the blackscreen doesnt workI have disabled Windows from automatically installing driver updates *Off topic- the hinges on the laptop screen have broken off, have tried to put it together with epoxy, hot glue, superglue and all have failed. (Warranty is expired)

Hi everyone, my U430 has suddenly rebooted itself (I suppose, I wasn't there to see) and now it will only show a black screen when booting. I tried the "unplug battery, press button for a minute, replug AC" method, but it did nothing. I also took out and put back in the RAM module. Nothing. It still only shows a black screen. The lights are all on, the keyboard is backlit and i can turn that backlight on or off, and the fan is spinning. But that's about it. I tried plugging in an HDMI cable and try with another screen, but it gives a "no signal" message. 3 Hours later.... At the 15th (or so...) attempt to turn it off and on again, the laptop suddendly started, going straight to the "Configuring Windows Updates" (I am on Windows 10) percentage screen. It now seems to work fine, but it is the third time that this incident happens, and now I am scared of ever rebooting it for fear of having it stuck on a black screen again. What can I do? Is it a BIOS problem? Motherboard? Any help would be very appreciated as I am working on an important document and I need to finish it up soon...

hi Hersh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First do a Power Drain
     (If the battery is removable)
Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not
I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Team about the Issue as this may be a device detection issue.

Hi there, sorry to be a bother.Like the title says, my touch screen stopped working. I went on to my computer one afternoon and found my mouse stuck in the top left corner, fidgeting. This was what I was expiriencing. (My touch-screen still worked fine at the time, but I still couldn't do anything or control the mouse, but I could tell that it was still working and it still responded.) After a bit of time and a few restarts later, it went back to normal, but my touch-screen then stopped working. I'm used to the touch-screen working incorrectly occasionally, and much like the mouse thing, a restart or two helps. It has now been three days and my touchs-creen still does not work. I've tried many of the solutions found in these forums, but to no avail. I am running Windows 10 and have had this computer for 2+ years.  Thanks.

2 keys have been giving me troubble over the past year. I have tried everything to clean them but have finally decided to just replace the keyboard. The parts list for my computer (US) shows the part number is 90203243. This is for the top cover assembly including the keyboard in silver.  The model name on the bottom of my computer says it is 20270. When I allow the Lenovo site to query my computer for serial number, it says the model is not 20270, but instead is 80B30. The site says the keyboard  p/n for my serial number is  25211731 which is no longer available. Suitable replacements listed are 25211609 or 25211670. I see that some sites list the keyboard alone but replacing that requires some DIY techniques that I'd simply prefer not to do. Does anyone know if these 25211xxx p/n's include the keyboard/cover assembly or are they just the keyboard itself?   I'd like to confirm this with someone at Lenovo before I place the order but it apears that there is no phone number to contact the parts dept for ordering.

A:U430 Touch keyboard p/n?

correction: The service manual/parts list shows the p/n to be 90203245, not 90203243 as stated above.

The fan of my IdealPad U430 Touch becomes every noisy after the computer works for a few hours. I've had it for over a year and the fan hasn't been cleaned, so I ran the Energy Manager Fan Cleaning Utility which took some dust off it but it didn't really make any difference when it comes to the noise.  I am welcoming any advice.Thanks.

A:U430 Touch Fan Noise

Hi BS5,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.

Open the bottom panel and use a compressed air can to clean up the fan. A thin layer of dust can cause the heat transfer to reduce greatly and cause the fan to go high speed to compensate for the higher temperature readings.

Please go through this HMM (hardware maintenance manual) for hardware reference.

If still the same issue try to update the BIOS and check for the issue.

Also, please ensure that you have the latest Power Manager installed.

I hope the above information helps.
Regards,
Shashi

The original SSD for this laptop from Lenovo is:

FRU 16200316 Model Samsung MZ7TD256HAFV
So this model should work perfectly. But any other SSD with 2.5-inch and 7.0 mm height should also work.

The proper installation details is shown in the maintenance manual:

I am actually just reposting this as I've noticed nobody responds a second time. My friend has a Lenovo Ideapad U430 Touch. It just recently shut down spontaneously and now when she presses the power button all that happens is the power light turns on and blinks, the screen doesn't even turn on. We tried unplugging the battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds and pressing it a couple times after. We even tried removing and re-inserting the RAM card (carefully and correctly mind you), since a faulty RAM connection could cause problems with the screen turning on, only to no avail. It should also be noted that she just recently upgraded to Windows 10. Is there any way to get it to start up on our own. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It did not beap after we took the RAM out and nothing but the power light blinks afer we turn it on. Please help!

Hello, I purchased my U430 Touch almost 2 years ago, and haven't had any problems until recently. Suddenly, my wifi keeps cutting out, and finding no connections, just for a moment, and then the connections come back. Would you have the Machine number for checking further on the details of the pc?
You can see it on the sticker label or visit the parts lookup page .

From the same parts look up page is the part number or FRU matched on the battery sticker.
Use that to check on Lenovo encompass as an authorized parts distributor for availability and pricing.

Hello, I have an IdeaPad U430 Touch with 8GB RAM. After experiencing all kind of strange errors and crashes lately (especially when trying to update Windows 10), I did some memory tests. First with Windows memory tool, and then with MemTest86. Both of them reported memory errors, unfortunately. The laptop is not under warranty anymore (I think; manufactured Sept. 2013). Before I spent money on replacement memory, is there a way to change the memory frequency/timings, to see if that solves the problem, at least temporary? Looking in BIOS I see no options to change any RAM or CPU settings. For the record, the information I have about the memory is: PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz / 11-11-11-28 / Micron Technology 16KTF1G Thank you in advance for any recommendation.

I plug it to my LED tv with an HDMI cable, and the computer works fine, the problem is in the display. I am wondering what could the problem be, I read something about the video chip or something like that, could be failing on the motherboard. Is there anything that I can do to realise what the problem really is??? I prefer to resolve it miself rather to let anyone open up the computer and make the thing worse than they already are.I am sorry if my english isnīt the best, I think that I manage to explain myself just fine.THANKS

A:Lenovo U430 Touch Display Issue

Hi alemano ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If the laptop is showing display using your external TV then most likely the graphic card would be performing well since external projection of display is an advanced feature .

The problem may be the LCD or LCD cables that you can try to unplug and replug checking if there are impinged cable along the way and in the port.

Herewith is the hardware manual that can help you on the disassembly of top , bottom cover and LCD panel.
The user guide here and service training video would also be a good reference.

Take time to review the steps .
Hope this helps you in your steps.

I have read through every thread on similar topics, and tried every possible fix. I have rebooted, rebooted into Safe Mode, unplugged the battery, run the computer to 0%, booted a different OS, unplugged the CMOS and discharged all records, checked the BIOS settings, uninstalled every conceivable USB driver, and run every dialog and troubleshooter Windows has to offer. My issue is with a Lenovo U430 Touch (i7-4500U) running Windows 8.1 64-bit. It was purchased about two years ago. It has the original Windows installation on a hybrid drive, and the only modifications since purchase were a M.2 SSD and a RAM upgrade to 8GB, none of which coincided with this issue. The two USB 2.0 ports on the right side of the laptop (next to the charging port) no longer function. They will charge "dumb" devices, like batteries, but will not recognize USB devices. For instance, on Android devices, they believe that they're being charged from "AC Charger" rather than a "USB Port." However, Windows notices certain events related to them. When I plug a flash drive into the lower USB2 port, Windows gives the following error message: "Problem Detected with Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed), and on the "View details" page, the General tab shows the following:  Device type: Universal Serial Bus ControllersManufacturer: (Standard USB Host Controller)Location: Port_#0004.Hub_#0003

I can find 04w3814 cards (note the different FRU) on eBay for ~$30 - will the BIOS accept that as an approved card, or does it have to be a 04w3815 card (those seem to be wireless-N only)? Are there other FRU:s that should work with my laptop/BIOS, machine type model 80B3CTO. 2. Is there a way to get access to the whitelist and update it?

A friend asked me to look at his U430 Touch because it wouldn't come on. I have tested the power supply at 20.4v to both the center pin and the shell. The battery shows 7.18 v between black and red. I have disconnected the battery and the power supply, done the tricks to discharge the capacitors and bleed off any residual voltage. Those did nothing. I then removed all power including the CMOS battery and tried again. Still nothing. I tried connecting the power supply with the battery out. Still nothing. The only indication of life is that the Charging Light comes on when the battery is connected and the power supply is on. No bump of the fan, no flash of any light, nothing. Oh, if I hold the power button on for 20 seconds with all power sources connected, the Charging Light will go out for 4 seconds, so I know that the power switch is functional. I would appreciate any words of wisdom. I hate to think it is the motherboard. Thanks,Dennis

I was using my laptop this morning, closed the lid, and went on to use the wifi from my phone (my wifi is weird in that I can only have one device connected at a time. I don't think this is relevant, but who knows?)When I went back to my laptop and opened the lid, it didn't start up from hybernation. I noticed that the battery light was blinking orange, so I plugged it in. Now the battery light comes on as white (which means charging but not critical battery life.)But when I push the power button, nothing at all happens. The power button usually glows when it's powering up, but now it doesn't do that. Nothing at all happens, except for the glowing white light aignifying charging when it's plugged in.Also, I notice that when it is plugged in, and when I press and hold the power for some time (10-20 seconds) the charging light will stop glowing for a bit. But beyond that, nothing happens: no fans, no sounds, nothing. This is one of the worst times for this to happen, since I have so much to do on my computer. Thanks in advance for reading this, and thank you for any help you can give.

Seems like possibly a hardware issue. Best way I see you can deal with this is contact support. You can submit a warranty claim, live chat, or schedule a call back at support.lenovo.com.

Hi all, I've had a discussion about this with another user of the forum, who told me he wasn't sure how to unplug the battery inside his U430, so he just drained it by using the laptop, then pressed the power button a few times to discharge capacitors, and then proceeded to change the RAM module without any problem.I wonder if there's any Lenovo rep who can say if this is an OK procedure and if not can give detailed instructions on how to unplug the battery. From the pictures shown here (http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-IdeaPad-U430-Touch-Ultrabook.100623.0.html) I see that the battery is fixed with screws, but I figure it wouldn't be necessary to remove them in order to just unplug it for a moment?Any help would be appreciated!

A:RAM upgrading Ideapad U430: Battery Removal

hi BranMakMorn,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Try checking this Maintenance Manual (Page36)

For me I think the procedure you mentioned draining the power from the battery is ok, Just make sure you wear an ESD Strap when you replace the RAM

Hope this helps
Cheers!

Hello Lenovo,I'm a business management student from India.I purchased Lenovo Ideapad U310 Touch model this May from the US (through Amazon) and have been using it without any issues till the last month. Last month I noticed that the hinge had developed tension and there was additional pressure on the lid or the screen area while closing. I thought it would be a routine issue and took it to my college's hardware repair center, but they suggested I handle the issue via Lenovo Support as it required opening the laptop. When I checked Lenovo support through customer care (India), I was told that the U series is not covered by International warranty. But I checked if the Lenovo service center would still have a look at the issue, to which I was told that it would be chargeable. I thought it was fair enough and took the laptop to the service center in Jamshedpur this afternoon. To my utter disappointment, the technician was unable to open up the area near the screen (where the problem was supposedly), but he also got the screen cracked while trying to. Now I'm left with a laptop that cannot be used as even though the screen display is intact, the touch sensors detect screen touch near the cracked area and keep the cursor rooted to that point. Also, the issue with the hinge could also not be fixed. All to add to the woes, I will have to manage a few days (don't know how many) without a laptop and also shell out the expense from my pocket! Now my question is, will the screen for Ideapad... Hello, I need help fixing the Touch Screen on my Flex15D Ideapad. I did a fresh install to Windows 10 and the Touch Screen stopped working. I tried every solution on these forums by going into Device Manager and disabling/uninstalling the HID compliant touch screen driver along with the HID Usb driver in that same section.  I also checked the Mice and Other Pointing Devices>USB Touchscreen Controller(A111) and that doesn't exist there. I checked to make sure the USB Hub is enabled and not disabled under Universal Serial Bus controllers section. I tried installing every Driver in the book from the Support section. I even tried reverting back to Windows 8.1 and STILL NOTHING and I went through all the same steps as I did on Windows 10. And apparently this is a rampant problem with Lenovo Touch Screen laptops with no real solution. Is there anything that works? Thanks.

Hi all, I purchased my U530 Touch laptop in January of 2015, then about a year later I had the infamous "broken hinge" issue that a lot of these laptops seem to suffer from. I sent it in to Lenovo and had it fixed though, and haven't had any other issue with it until now. The problem I am now experiencing is a very noticable flickering that moves from the bottom to the top of the screen. Changing the refresh rate only seems to change the rate at which the flickering moves. I noticed that the glossy black portion of the hinge seemed to have a slighly loose feel, and saw the screen flickering issue go away when I pressed into the hinge in the right place. You can feel and hear the plastic moving when pressing into the hinge. If you fiddle with it enough you can get it to a state where the screen doesn't flicker, but it's not an ideal solution. If the laptop gets even slightly bumped or moved, the flickering will come back. Any help with this issue would be much appreciated.

I have a Lenovo IdeaPad P500 Touch and the screen has darkened (barely lit).  I've used all the Brightening options in the Control Center but it hasn't helped at all.  If I brought this in to a computer tech would it be fixable or is the laptop totally "shot"?  Moderator comment: Model added to subject for clarity.

This computer is not even a week old. When this first happened I saw that on the bottom side of the laptop were two switches, one for the battery and I guess one for the touch screen, by the way there is not literature on what so ever, and after flipping the switch the touch screen worked perfectly for about a day. Now it has stopped working again, but the switch is in the correct position. All of my drivers are up to date. I am so frustrated with this. the mouse works fine, it is just the touch screen. Please, someone tell me you have had a similar issue with this series of the ideapad and that you have been able to fix it, I really don't want to have to send it in as I use it everyday for work.

Hi eking4044, welcome to the forum,

Both of those "switches" on the bottom are for the battery. One is a spring loaded switch to open battery, after you push the other one into the open position. This is how you remove the battery, and have nothing to do with the Touch Screen.

Did you delete any of the software that came with your system? The easiest thing you could do is backup your user files to a CD, or some external hard drive, then reset your system using the system recovery. See page 20 of the user guide for the recovery routine. Make sure you have a backup of your user files, before attempting the recovery, as it will set up your system like new. This should solve your problem, but if it doesn't, please post back with further information.

Cheers

510p Ideapad Touchscreen stopped responding to touch several months ago. Everything else with system is fully functional. I do not use touchscreen that frequently so not sure of exact time touchscreen stopped responding. I did have an issue with a Windows update about 6 months ago so may have been related. I noticed the issue around that same time. I have run the system diagnostics and no issues and shows no drivers to update. Thanks for your help.
