X250/Intel 5500 with one 4k monitor (W10/Linux Mint). How to verify in advance of monitor purchase?

Q: X250/Intel 5500 with one 4k monitor (W10/Linux Mint). How to verify in advance of monitor purchase?

I'd like to check that I can drive a single '4K' monitor through my X250 mDP port at 60 Hz e.g. BenQ PD3200U (http://www.benq.co.uk/product/monitor/pd3200u/specifications/). The BenQ I mention can display 3840x2160 at 60Hz. Read various reports about the Intel 5500 only being able to drive this resolution at 30Hz but also read about some specific success stories. I only want to run this single external monitor, not connect two or more as many others have tried. I don't even need to use the existing laptop screen at the same time. So, are the mDP1.2 and the 5500 that the X250 have enough to connect with the BenQ PD3200U (it has all inputs DP, mDP etc)? The other question I have is that I have a dual boot of Linux Mint and it would be fantastic if I could find out if that OS could also drive the monitor. Unfortunately I have less experience of Linux so any diagnostic advice/experience anyone would have in advance of me buying a monitor is very much appreciated. Below are the details of my X250 which I've updated as far as I can make for drivers and BIOS using the automatic update at Lenovo. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, am the proud new owner of a T550 type 20CK and ProDock. The ThinkPad itself has the 3K (2880 by 1620) LCD panel. I want to use this machine at my desk with an external 4K (3840x2160) monitor so that windows can move from screen to screen without scaling. But the Screen Resolution section of Windows 8.1 control panel only shows a max resolution for the external screen of 2560x1440. The hardware is supposed to be able to do this. I think I need a better driver. Explanation: Graphics are from the Intel HD Graphics 5500 onboard chip. The spec sheet for my machine, here, http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/164?MT=20CK  says  "Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor only, or Intel HD Graphics 5500 in processor and NVIDIA GeForce® 940M, 1GB memory (discrete models are only available in Western Europe); supports external analog monitor via VGA and digital monitor via Mini DisplayPort; supports three independent displays; Max resolution: [email protected] (DP via mDP cable); [email protected] (VGA)" Yet this resolution is not selectable. The Intel HD graphics 5500 driver updated by Lenovo System Update is dated 11/18/2014, pretty old. Intel's site has a driver dated 3/6/2015. But the system will not let me install this driver saying my system needs a custom driver I must obtain from Lenovo. Please help! Bryan

I am using the VGA port of a Dell 4-in-1 adapter (DA100) to connect my XPS 13 with touch screen display to a Dell U2412M monitor. The Intel HD Graphics Control Panel does not detect that there is an external monitor attached to the computer, i.e., the Graphics Options menu does not show the "Output To" option, the Graphics Properties' Display menu shows only "Built-in Display" under the Select Display tab, etc. The DA100 was installed remotely by Dell Support (after neither I nor they could find the driver on the Dell support website, as instructed to do by the software driver download guide that comes with the adapter), so I assume that it was installed correctly. Has anyone else experienced this problem and, hopefully, have a solution?

Intel suggest it is Mobo problem, which hdmi output directly connected to nvidia gtx card. Is it true dell?

Once again, switchable graphics only controls which GPU is used for rendering. It does not change which GPU is physically wired to the display outputs, and all 3 of the features I listed earlier require support from the GPU that is physically wired to the display output in order to be used. Currently, Intel GPUs do not support any of those features, so in a system with the design you want, those features couldn?t be used even if the system had a dGPU that supported those features, because the dGPU wouldn?t be physically wired to the display output. I?m sitting on an XPS 15 right now that is designed the way you want and has switchable graphics with an NVIDIA GPU that supports those features ? but my system can?t use any of them because the iGPU is wired to the display outputs. Switchable graphics does not fix that. You can shout in Caps Lock and say things as many times as you want, but that won?t make you right. You clearly don?t fully understand how some of these technologies work and what they require, but if you still think I?m wrong, go do some research and you?ll find lots of threads of people asking why their laptops with NVIDIA GPUs don?t support G-Sync or VR ? or 5K displays, which is another one I forgot about. This will be the reason why.
Anyway, I?ve already correctly answered your original question ? you?re welcome for that, by the way. I?m sorry it?s not the answer you wanted and that you don?t seem to recognize why Dell impleme... Read more

Ok, here's how it started. I used to have a GeForce MX440, until it died a bitter death. I replaced it with a GeForce FX 5500 purchased at TigerDirect, thinking it was a better card. Here's what happens. With the MX440, I was able to play all kinds of games (Warcraft, CSI, Doom) with no problem. When I replaced the 440 with the 5500, I could still load Warcraft, but about 30 seconds into the game, the monitor would shut off. I would have to manually restart the computer to get it back up. So, I tried re-installing drivers for the video card and updating the motherboard drivers. I tried removing the card and putting it back in. Whenm that didn't work, I thought it may be windows related, so I uninstalled XP and formatted my drive and re-installed windows. That didn't work. The monitor kept turning black after about 10-30 seconds.

I read that the onboard sound might be conflicting with the video card, so I disabled that. I disabled the onboard video thinking that that might be the problem. Nada, zilch, nothing. It's gotten so bad now that I can't even load XP (unless it's in Safe Mode) without the monitor shutting off. I'm assuming this is a video card issue, but I can't figure out what the issue actually is. I've searched and searched and I'm two steps way from taking it to a computer place to get looked at, but I wanted to see if I could get help on here first.

Here is my set-up:

I love to game a lot which is pretty much the only thing I use my computer for so I want to make sure the monitor I get will be good for Counter Strike Source. I hear that CRTS are naturally better for gaming but I doubt that since they're obsolete now-a-days...any advice???

Also, my video card is a Radeon X1900XT if that is a factor

Ok here's the specs on the monitor I want:

Display Type TFT Active Matrix
Viewable Screen Size 22 inches
Display Area 473 x 296 mm
Maximum Refresh Rate 60Hz
Input Video Signal DVI-D
VGA (15-Pin D-Sub)
Contrast Ratio 800:1
Response Time 5 ms
Maximum Resolution 1680 x 1050
Cabinet Color Silver
VESA Mounting Compliant VESA 100mm
Unit Dimensions (WxHxD) 20.2" x 16.0" x 7.8"

Linux mint is comparatively easier to use, as it's GUI is similar to Windows. On the other hand, Ubuntu or Fedora look a bit different, but the functions are basically the same.

It will be a good idea to take a backup before installation.

if you want to go with a Viewsonic 19 then what you will need is the the GS790 model which will fit on your budget..
On the other hand , and this is from peronal expericence you're better off with a Sony monitor CPD-G420 crisper display graphics etc... ( again that's based on my eyesight so i guess that in the end if you set your eyes on a Viewsonic then that's what you need).

Well my monitor is starting to poop out on me, and I noticed that my 27' Magnavox TV has an S-Video out, So I'm thinking about buying a Graphics card with an S-Video out, and using my TV as a monitor, is there any problems associated with this, I was told it will seem like my computer has slowed down, is there any truth to this, I will be able to run at a much higher resolution right, thanks for the info.

A:TV for a Monitor any downsides before I purchase the Video Card?

I also have video card with a tv out feature but prefer to use a monitor. Why? Because the monitor has more adjustments, higher resolution and a sharper picture. I have a 28" TV with an S-video input and I have tried it out but depending on your television you will most likely only get up to 800 by 600 on the resolution. Depending on the model you may get as low as 640 by 480. The TV only has a fixed amount of scan lines and unless it is a High Definition television then a TV of that size will probably max out at 800 by 600. The sharpness wil vary from television to television but trust me, everything will look better on a monitor. I just checked out the Magnavox site and the top of the line 27" will get up to "800 lines of horizontal resolution" but most of the others have less. 800 lines of horizontal resolution means that with that model you could probably get up to 1024 by 768 on it but certainly not higher and that is the most expensive 27" model available. A computer monitor will definitely be sharper.

I am considering the purchase of a new, larger Samsung Monitor, model Samsung S27A850D 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor. I cannot locate this monitor locally so cannot evaluate it prior to purchase. Before I commit, I'd like to ask advice on my understanding of the resolution and how it will relate to my use. I do a lot of online research and primarily require sharp text. The screen resolution on this model is: 2560 X 1440.

At this resolution, do I understand I may need to enlarge my text because it will be smaller than the same text on my older display? (please see description below) Will resizing the text affect the sharpness?

I currently have an older 24" Samsung SyncMaster 245BW - w/resolution of 1920 x 1200 which is still providing me excellent service. I just want a bit more screen area.

Anything else to consider?

Thanks for advice or explanations.

A:Samsung Monitor purchase - question abt resolution

When you install your monitor, it will find the correct resolution.

Your images will still be sharp.

I just purchased the LG 29" widescreen - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005624 and the res is 2560 x 1080.

When you right click on your desktop and click Screen resolution you will see Recommended.

You can play with the resolution, but I think you will be very happy with what you have.

Good luck!

Hi,

I don't think you can edit the repositories directly, although I may be wrong. I suggest changing your software sources to the main server, or another mirror, and then trying:

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
If this doesn't solve the problem, check to see whether Synaptic Package Manager is open elsewhere, and close it before running these commands.

Hi there

Linux Mint (17) QIANA now released

I Am trying this in a VM now before testing on a REAL machine. I'm looking for good things with this release --it's a LTS (Long Term support) release which will be supported until 2019.

This is the sort of things I've been looking for -- I tend to use Linux as an everyday desktop and like the idea of Long term release support -- one of the main reasons I chose OPENSUSE over a lot of other ones - but I do prefer a debian based system over an RPM based one like SUSE even though I haven't had too many complaints with it.

(I recommend you use the LEGAL torrent in their links - it's a lot faster than some of the servers until the mirrors get loaded up with the new release).

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

Ok... I looked for about an hour and decided i would have to make a new thread for my specific problem... so sorry if im making my first post in an odd place

I recently installed a NVIDIA GeForce 5500 FX PCI 256MB DDR video card
followed directions as best i could, and disabled the Intel integrated graphics... but my PC insists on REinstalling the intel integrated graphics controller upon restart... It left me alone for awhile and i could run Counter Strike : Condition Zero moderately well (low frames after playing for over an hour) but after allowing my computer to update itself (while using IE to dowload firefox for a reinstall, IE randomly decided my home page was going to be the microsoft site for the day) and since then no matter what i do the computer insists on trying to reinstall the intel integrated graphics thing...

so my question is, how do I make this stop? how do i keep the computer from giving me the dreaded "found new hardware" bubble when im using a FAR superior (REAL) video card already?

is there something i do in the BIOS (i hope not, i dont like messing around in there) or on the motherboard itself?

i have some basic info about my comp in my signature but im going to use "PolSystemInfo" to find all my PC specs and just copy paste them below, I just hope its enough info to help so... Read more

Hmm that didn't happen to me when I put mines in. Did you install the NVIDIA drivers? Try disabling the onboard in the device manager. That?s what I did. There doesn?t seem to be an option to turn it off in the bios (my bios) maybe there is for you however. It isn?t too complicated. Just simply look for onboard graphics or integrated graphics controller or w/e and select disable, but first try disabling it in the device manager. It should be listed under display adapters -> properties -> disable this device.

You should upgrade to DX9.0c...

Hi!

I installed Linux Mint on my external HDD. Worked fine. Booted Linux when external HDD was plugged in, Win7 when not. Unfortunately at one point Linux Mint updated its kernel headers and I suppose it made an update to Grub with this. => no boot to Win7 although all data was still there.
I tried a Win7 recovery cd image via USB-Stick (no cd drive available) => no windows found.
I tried bootrec, bootsect, but that did not help ("element not found").
There was a drive E: with 100mb which held a /boot folder.
C: (with win7 on it) did not.
I tried diskpart for activating partitions etc.
Nothing worked.
Someone suggested "sudo update-grub" in linux mint (still worked if plugged in). That one found windows and it looked like it was making an entry for it (beneath diverse linux mint options).
Next restart brought only a grub-console, but no boot options. => no linux either now.
I restartet using USB-Win7 recovery. Now the 100mb partition is gone (I suppose thats ok, since I sat it to hidden+boot in gparted), all the drive letters are wildly assigned in diskpart and I do not know what to do now.

Thx for any help, Tommy

Linux has obviously grabbed complete control over your boot process. If you are going to fix this I have a feeling you'll have more luck on the linux forums than here.

After much research i concluded its must be a corrupt mint download so i re downloaded but instead of burning a DVD from the ISO i chose to add to usb stick using "Pendrivelinux" very easy to use program unfortunately still wouldn't work

then i was reading something somewhere and someone was advised to try a different usb stick so i fort i would too and success, i know have a fully installed and working linux mint 16 64bit Cinnamon

Hi all,I have a question,I have dual booted many times before but only with windows os.I downloaded an ISO of linux mint and burned it to cd.Would like to know if it would be the same process as dual booting
windows os.Don't want to run into any surprises,thank-you.

A:Dualboot 8.1 and Linux Mint

I can't say if it would be the same process since you didn't describe what you did before.  However, this article is the one I followed to install Linux Mint alongside Windows.  You should note that there are certain steps that are specific to dual booting Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint on a UEFI system.

I've read the Dota 2 Linux Minimum System Requirements are:

Ubuntu 12.04
Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz
4GB RAM
4GB Hard Drive Space,
nVidia GeForce 8600/9600GT, ATI/AMD Radeaon HD2600/3600 (Graphic Drivers: nVidia 310, AMD 12.11), OpenGL 2.1
OpenAL Compatible Sound Card

But I use:

Linux Mint 14 "Nadia" with Cinnamon 1.6
Quad-core Intel 4670K-i5 Haswell
8GB DDR3 RAM
500GB HDD
nVidia GeForce GTX 770 Gaming Edition
Sabertooth Z87 Motherboard

And for some reason DotA 2 won't launch. I have successfully installed Steam, then proceeded to install DotA 2. When I click "Play" in Steam, it loads, plays the Valve intro animation, then closes out. Whyyyy? I thought Linux Mint was built off of Ubuntu?

Hello all,

After some searching I thought I'd ask here.  Does anyone know of a system-wide EQ for Linux Mint, similar to the Realtek one in windows?  I did come across one called PulseAudio, but that seems to be either out of date or not maintained anymore from what I read.  Not a big deal, just like having the ability to dial in half decent sounds on youtube and the like.

Apologies if I missed this already.

Y500 dual 650m 16gb ram, installed Linux Mint 18 on second hard drive and have Windows 10 on the original 1tb drive. I was able to swap the drives and boot without issue. After upgrading to Win 10 anniversary update swapping in the linux drive caused a boot error and after getting it to boot then swapping in the windows drive it would not boot at all. Tried disabling secure boot and uefi, legacy boot, nothing worked. Completely wiped the 1tb drive and installed Win 10 again from scratch. Secure boot enabled and uefi on. Swapped out for the linux drive and again no boot. Went in to bios and disabled secure boot and enable legacy boot mode-still no boot. Turned on UEFI boot mode but still no secure boot and linux drive boots fine. I have read that it should be possible to add the security code whatever to the firmware so it can boot in secure mode but nobody explains how that can be done. BIOS flash to add code?

I want to install Windows XP Home Edition SP3 to an NTFS partition on my SSD.

The PC has the following devices hooked up:
128 GB SSD - ext4 and swap partitions taking up half the space, Linux Mint 17.2 installed
A blank NTFS partition taking up the rest

750 GB HDD - one NTFS partition

1 TB HDD - one ext4 partition

But when I run the XP setup disc, it reports the following:
122104 MB Disc 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]
E: Partition1 [Unknown] 122104 MB ( 122104 MB free)
715403 MB Disk 0 at Id 2 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]
C: Partition1 (Programs Fi) [NTFS]  715402 MB ( 237929 MB free)
953868 MB Disk 0 at Id 3 on bus 0 on ahcix86 [MBR]
F: Partition1 [Unknown] 953869 MB ( 953868 MB free)

And if I select E: it tells me "Windows XP cannot recognize the partition you selected."

You never know what's going on there. Maybe it does not like UEFI or ext4?

MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard
AMD FX-8350 Eight-core Black Edition 4.0 GHz
2x4 GB DDR3 RAM OC 2133 MHz
Corsair Force LX 128 GB SATA SSD
Seagate Momentus 750 GB SATA 2.5" HDD
Seagate Desktop 1 TB SATA 3.5" HDD
Linux Mint 17.2
Windows XP Home Edition SP3

A:Add XP to PC running Linux Mint with UEFI

I want to install Windows XP Home Edition SP3 to an NTFS partition on my SSD.

Cool. Please keep in mind that Windows XP will overwrite GRUB. As such, you will lose access to Linux Mint, and will need to re-install GRUB using a Linux Mint live-flashdrive (or live-DVD).

Maybe it does not like UEFI or ext4?

In Linux Mint type:
sudo parted -l
This will show information about your harddrive, most importantly what kind of partition table you're using. Based on your comment about UEFI, I would presume you're using a GPT table, which Windows XP doesn't support. Nore does Windows XP support UEFI.

My current OS is Win 7 Pro 32 bit on one HD, but I'm thinking of installing Linux Mint 64 bit on an extra HD and alternating between the two.
I would only be using one OS at a time on alternate HDs.
What would be a good antivirus, free or paid, to cover both?
Or should I go for two different antivirus programs?
I currently run Norton 360 Premier, but I'm not sure if it works with Linux.
I have not actually installed Linux yet.
Tnx in advance for any help.

Hi, I have been directed from the Linux forums to ask this concern here and I will just copy and paste what I asked there:

Are you able to answer the concerns about  "Possible Linux/Ebury - Operation Windigo installetd." An attacker can't infect you through just knowing your ip and then looking for vulnerable ports can they?

The only vulnerable ports I know of are the Samba ports and they were both closed on my vpn ip and my real ip. Plus I had a firewall set to reject all incoming traffic. The port checkers I used were http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

Also upon I discovered that port 22 ssh was a vulnerable port which I never checked.

I'd be very grateful for any help on this. Thanks.

A:Linux Mint backdoor concern.

As this question has now been answered in another thread, I'll close this thread to prevent further confusion.

Hi,
A very useful article on that subject. Much less need than in Windows but when/why is covered here too. I run Crunchbang Linux with just a firewall and haven't experienced any problems - very conservative browsing habits though.

Alright guys, I was adding a line to my .profile for OpenGL to play L4D2 and after I re-booted and all of that when I log in I get this

View details (~/.xsession-errors file)
/etc/mdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

Any idea what to do?

I have read the post by Kurzo and have a question regarding the [/home] partition. Specifically if I have a created a separate partition for windows, documents, can this also be used by Linux as the [/home] partition?

A:Dual Boot W7 Linux Mint

Hi Not quite sure what you want to achieve, but I will try and give you some relevant info. You should make/take/create Recovery Media for Windows 7 so that it can be re-installed at a later date if wanted.  If you view the Hard Disk and can take a screen shot to post here it may help to give more targeted advice. I would expect to shrink the C: and create 3 or 4 more partitions //home/swap and perhaps a common data storage area formatted to NTFS. Then when Mint is installed the common data area can be mounted to use for docs between W`indows and Mint. If in doubt please ask.

Consider using MBAM Premium as an on demand scanner only BTS is enough for real time protection.
You could also add an additional on demand scanner such as ESET Online Scanner
CCleaner or Privazer if not already installed
Some type of backup solution
If only for testing and you have another machine then you probably don't need all the above
