Windows 7 Home Basic Questions

Q: Windows 7 Home Basic Questions

Hi guys,

I am planning to build a Download rig using some old parts.

Config:

Processor: Intel Celeron 1.1Ghz Socket 370 SL5ZE
Motherboard: 810E unbranded mobo
Memory: 2x256MB SD RAM
Graphics Card: nVidia FX5200 128MB PCI
HDD: 40GB HDD or CF to IDE SSD & 500GB for Storage
OS: Windows 7 Home Basic x86

My queries are:

How much memory does Windows 7 Home Basic use & how much will I have free for other apps?

I have also tried Windows Thin PC on my Netbook.
When will ThinPC be released?

Thanks & regards,
Hariharan

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Home Basic Questions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows 7 Home Basic uses about 300MB of RAM. There is currently no release date for Windows Thin PC.

First question is, where can I find this online? Surprisingly, I can't find it at Best Buy, Amazon, etc.

Second, I ran the installation compatibility check for an older computer. It says it failed because the graphics chip won't support Aero. But my understanding is Home Basic doesn't use Aero. So, can Home Basic still be installed on this computer, or will all versions simply fail to install? thanks

Hello and welcome Jeff mate some system specs first would be really handy mate and I think you are far better off with Home Premium my friend the Starter for example is just that a "starter" pretty basic and I personally think Home Premium is the base level anyone should have.

Having said that anything is better than Vista - but the specs mate really important to what you should load / install.

Hi;

Just started trying out Vista Home Basic now. I know I'm kinda late trying it out..got stuck with XP SP3...Well, definitely a newbie here. It's different than XP. A couple of questions if I may:

1) I'm trying out Vista Home Basic on an old pc with P4 2.6Ghz 2.5gb ram 256mb agp video card. It was kinda hard making the drivers work and had to resort to using the Compatibility mode so I could have a audio and make an old 56K modem work. Well I got it working! It's kinda sluggish especially when dsplaying multiple windows ot tabs while browsing...

Can I do something to change setting perhaps to make the performance a bit faster...? Can you teach me how please?

2) How can I make a shortcut of my connections in the desktop? I use both a dial-up and wireless dsl and I have to go to "Connect To" in the start menu then select the connection I prefer to use. Isn't there a way to have a shortcut for this?

In XP SP3 I have a Connec to>(which displays all my connections) then I just select it from there. Can I do that in Vista Home Basic?

3) The status of the connection is only viewed via the Network and Sharing>View Status. Isn't there a way I can view the status of my connection via a hotkey or something?

Please guide/help me make my experience with Vista worthwhile.

Any tips or Vista approaches to improve performance is deeply appreciated.

Thank you very much!

A:Vista Home Basic questions

goto network connections you should see your dial up provider there right click it and send to desktop. I am not home right now so i am doing this by phone. doing from memory i know you can set it so you have an icon in task bar but i not home to look i know you right click on something and select properties. Then there should be a box you tick to show on task bar i think it is in network connections. And and should say something like show icon in notification area when connected. See if that helps. To answer your first question goto run type in msconfig hit enter goto start up tab uncheck everything you do not need to startup. Save and close restart computer. See if that helps speed it up.

Running Win 7 Pro & XP SP3 on my home network....NOT using Home Group. Here are a couple relatively novice questions I am curious about:

1) I have a couple printers setup and working fine...can I access and use an optical drive one one W& computer from another computer in the network...?...have one lightscribe drive in W7 system...can I use it from other computers in the house and how ?

2) Can I run some programs installed on one PC only from other PC's in the house...?..rather than install the same program on all computers in the house...I guess similar to a "go to my PC" system that's advertised out there ?

Is this what the remote computer option is on XP & W7 ?

Thanks, TR

A:Basic questions on Home network options

There is no way to run programs from another computer unless you use remote desktop software like the built-in program or TeamViewer.

To use the built-in client, first enable it:

Attachment 63218

Then to use it, start typing remote desktop connection into the start menu and press enter.

Then enter the computer name that you want to log into.

   Note
Only the Professional and higher editions of XP and 7 support hosting a remote desktop session. If you have the home version of XP, you will be able to connect to the 7 machine, but not the other way around.

If this is the case, consider using the free alternative TeamViewer instead.

I recently installed vista basic home 32. I couldnt upgrade it from windows xp because someone installed a bad version of xp on my computer. So I selected the other option and installed it. After I installed vista, I have to reinstall all software for my devices, like my dvd drive, soundblaster etc. right? I went to the HP site to get the software because I lost my disc and didnt see any software to install the dvd player, just firmware, utility and patch. Is one of these the software to install my drive? There is also a cd-rom order link, do I need to do that?

A:Installed Vista 32 basic home and have some questions

You don't need and drivers for you dvd, these drivers are native to vista and are installed when vista is installed.

You mentioned software, hp most likely supplied burning software with your compter this may or maynot work with vista but hp should have it under applications.

You will have to install drivers, such as chipset, sound, lan, video. These should/hopefully depending on the hp model, be avalible on the hp website but make sure they are vista drivers

Hi
Please advice on the performance comparison between
- Windows 7 Home Basic versus
- Windows 7 Home Premium
assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM.

Just a hearsay...that Windows 7 Home Basic is lagging behind Windows 7 Home Premium in terms of performance assuming if both uses the same 8GB RAM. Please confirm whether this is true or not.

By the way, how to activate the Windows Aero in Windows 7 Basic???

A:Performance comparison btw. Windows 7 Home Basic versus Home Premium

Hello cheesum and welcome to Seven Forums.

Last question first. This tutorial may help enable Aero. Please note that there is no way to enable transparency on Windows Home Basic.

Aero - Enable in Unsupported Editions of Windows 7

As far as performance, I have not been able to find any specific "speed" tests to say one way or the other.

Difference Between Windows 7 Home Basic and Home Premium | Difference Between | Windows 7 Home Basic vs Home Premium

But if Basic and Home Premium are run on two identical machines (not just identical RAM, but also identical hard drive/hard drive speed, identical CPU, identical programs and apps installed, etc) I would give a very slight performance advantage to Basic simply because it doesn't have the same amount of features that Home Premium has. Fewer features to load usually equals faster performance. But I think any performance advantage would be so slight it wouldn't make any appreciable difference.

I did find some comments comparing Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

performance difference 7 home premium vs. 7 professional? - Microsoft Community

Of course, others may completely disagree with my thoughts and that's cool. Healthy discussion and debate is welcomed.

I have recently purchased a new Acer Aspire 5535 laptop. It has Windows Vista Home Premium (WVHP) installed.

The computer came with a number of programs that I am not interested in having on my system. In addition, I was not provided a restore disc. I do own a copy of Windows Vista Home Basic (WVHB).

I would like to keep WVHP as I appear to be eligible for an upgrade to Windows 7 . . . but I would like to reinstall to get rid of all these worthless programs. Can I use a WVHB disc with my new WVHP product key?

Could I install WVHB with the WVHB product key, then use the WVHP key supplied by Acer to upgrade?

Thanks for your time in answering my question. I hope it isn't unclear.

Thanks,

Jeremy

I believe that if you install with the Basic disc the process will offer you a choice

I have some basic Win 7 Home Premium questions re creating/restoring IMAGES of my C drive ( and hidden partitions) using native Windows backup and restore. Never really used it before as I use other software instead, but wanted to explore this option a bit further:

QUESTIONS:

1) When I created my first image, it created a directory , with mutliple files ( one large 32 GB one and many timy ones. I assume this is normal?

2) I note the directory name was time stamped, so I assume this means that every subsequent time I create an image, it will create another new directory and new set of files.....(and that I would need to manaually delete the old images if start running out of space). Is that correct?

3) Can the creation of Windows system images be scheduled?? I know the file-by-file backups can, but I didnt see anything similar for images.

4) Suppose my bootable hard drive crashed, and I buy a new drive. How do I restore the image. Is the system repair disc bootable??? and does it prompt me to pick an image??

Thanks.

My set up is as follows

Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1

Disk 0 ( my main drive)

A:Basic questions on Windows 7 native backup and restore

Hello mediaman,

In Windows 7, you have two distinctive backup options. Windows Backup = To back up all files in selected folders, and restore any file from the backup. You also have the option to include creating a system image. This can all be done an automatic schedule if you like.

System Image = To manually completely back up and restore selected drives/volumes.

System images are saved as backup periods in the WindowsImageBackup folder where saved to. The blue Note box at the top of the tutorial can give you more details about this.

Each new system image created will create a new Backup YYYY-MM-DD-hh-mm-ss folder in the WindowsImageBackup\(ComputerName) folder.

The same note box above can give you more details on this as well.

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! Before formatting the C drive, did you have a Windows OEM version - Windows preinstalled by HP with your computer. When you bought the computer initially, did it have Win 7 preinstalled OR you installed WIndows later ? If you have a product key, you can try to download WIndows 7 installational ISO image from Microsoft >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 Then, burn the image to a DVD and use to install Win 7.Post successful WIn 7 installation, you can download and use HP Supprot Assistant to get the latest updates from HP such as drivers updates.  Let me know if this works for you.

I have had this HP G62 laptop for almost four years. It has always had Windows 7 Home Basic on it. I had to format my hard drive a few weeks ago due to viruses corrupting my graphics (OpenGL), so I did this and reinstalled Windows 7 Home Basic.

Before I formatted my hard drive, I used a program to obtain my Product Key for Microsoft Office and I also made a note of the Windows Product Key which was different to the one on the Certificate Of Authenticity on the bottom of the laptop. I downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 (which apparently is legal) and put it onto a flash drive and used it to reinstall Windows. I don't remember entering the Product Key when installing, so cannot confirm this.

I received a message saying that the Windows is not genuine and I must activate it. I tried to do that using the Product Key on the COA and it says that the product key will not work with this edition of Windows. The sticker on the bottom of my laptop says it is for Windows 7 Home Premium, but my laptop came to me with Home Basic.

I also tried the Product Key that I obtained from the program before formatting and this key gives me a message saying "The Software Licensing Service reported that the computer BIOS is missing a required license." (Error Code 0xC004F063)

Please could you assist me, here is the MGADiag report.

From the looks of it you did a repair/reinstall using a Retail disk.

If the Key on your machine is for Windows 7 Home Premium - then that is what the machine is licensed for (and why anyone would wish to downgrade it to Home Basic is rather beyond me) - and you need to upgrade to the Home Premium install to get the Key to work. From what I can see of the Spec for the machine, the default is Home Premium.

From where did you purchase this?

ArturSibgatulli Sorry, but HP does not provide downloads for their recovery media; instead, you have to order it from HP. In addition, HP no longer stocks recovery media for the older Win7 PCs. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. There is a problem with a partitioning process. Firstly, I've installed Acronis Disk Director Suite and in manual mode I've started to create a new partition. My notebook had 3 partitions: main partition of ~300Gb with Windows installed, unknown "System" partition with "boot" flag of ~1.5Gb and recovery partition of ~8Gb. So I tried to create a new partition using the free space from the first one. After rebooting Acronis started to work, created a new partition and started to replace "HDDRECOVERY" partition. During this process, notebook had been shutdown (it was plugged into the socket) and after turning on, I noticed the next: after turning on and booting BIOS, the laptop is going to reboot again and again and again. Any ideas? P.S.: sorry for the very muddled description

You need to change the Product Key to the oneon the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the batterycompartment), using the Change ProductKey link at the bottom of the System properties page.

You may need toactivate by phone.

Hi i was hoping to reformat my girlfriends computer since she's never done it and it's got tons of stuff on there she doesn't need or use. The problem is she doesn't have her original Windows XP home basic cd that came with her computer so i was wondering if my Windows XP home edition cd would work with her cd key since my cd isn't the "basic" version.

Will it boot?
What is the error that you are receiving?
Disable defragging before it runs..possibly making this more difficult

Hi everyone.

I'm thinking of buying a cheap Windows 7 OS and that is Home Basic and I'm thinking that if I will regret buying only a Home Basic Windows 7?

For my use of my PC I'm just a moderate gamer and sometime edit pictures and videos. And I'm thinking that if I will miss something using only a HomeBasic.

It tells in the Product that it is and 32bit OEM. I heard that you can make it to 64bit.
If I will upgrade my 32bit to 64bit can I just download it in the internet or I will still need to buy it?

A:Windows 7 Home Basic is good enough?

Windows Home Premium is your first level of the Windows family. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/compare

Below Home Premuim is only preinstall in factory Home Starter and Home Basic. These version arent very common because its a strip version of Windows 7 Home Preemuim. I think that you cant buy Home Basic or Starter at retail shops they only sell the Home Premium
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7_editions#Main_editions

I am suggesting Home Premium because its commonly for Home User or Professional is Business environment

32 bit is for 86 bit processors
64 bit is for 64 bit processors
OEM disc tie to your motherboard to that disc. Retail disc dont have that limitation

Depending on your hardware you can buy 32 or 64 bit version of Windows

I think if you buy retail has both versions 32,64 while OEM has to specified 32 or 64 versions

A:Installing SAS in Windows 7 Home Basic

Welcome to Seven Forums ann16. It should install. Try downloading the installer again. Download to your desktop, and right click the installer and choose Run as administrator. If you are trying to install from a non administrator account, that would also be an issue. A Guy

A:problem with windows home basic , plz help

Well, some features of Windows 7 are disabled in the Home Basic edition, but to change themes (if you can) you right click on the desktop and from the menu that appears you select Personalize. From there select the theme you want.

Over thanksgiving, i was called in to help my aunt's Thinkpad connect to the printer. She mentioned that she'd like windows 7 so i helped her get Windows Ultimate Steal using her .edu email address. It downloaded well, and we opened up the setup file. I was just leaving, so i told her to click upgrade when the prompt came. i received a call saying a dialog box popped up saying it could not upgrade from Vista Home basic, which she was apparantly running. Does anyone know of a solution or workaround to let her upgrade to Windows 7?

A:Windows Vista Home Basic

Which version of Win7 did she buy?

According to the upgrade matrix:

http://i.zdnet.com/blogs/windows_7_upgrade_chart.png

Vista Home Basic can be upgraded-in-place to Win7 Home Premium or Ultimate.

That only applies within the same addressing type: 32 bit can only be upgraded-in-place to 32 bit, 64 to 64.

An upgrade license can be used in other ways, but only with a custom (clean) install.

Hi,

I have recently bought LENOVO Z560 with pre-installed 32-bit Windows 7 Home Basic.

I want to know:
1) How can I upgrade to 64 bit Home Basic
2) How can I know/ get the PRODUCT KEY of my pre-installed 32 bit Home Basic
3) Do I need to pay extra amount if I upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit (as, I have heard that if I purchase, I will get 32 and 64 bit OS in a single pack only)
4) Will my existing set of drivers work fine with 64 bit Home Basic. If not, from where can I get the drivers

Thanks In Advance.

Regards,
Ajoy

Downloading installation discs can be risky . . there are no legal sites to do so, and the illegal ones will often include things you do not want.

You can request a replacement disc here:

A:Windows 7 home basic wont boot

You can access the Windows 7 System Recovery Options using a Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive, or by using a system repair disc if you created one earlier. To use this method, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the disc or USB flash drive.Insert the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive, or a system repair disc, and then shut down your computer.

Restart your computer using the computer's power button.

When prompted, press any key, and then follow the instructions that appear.

On the Install Windows page, or on the System Recovery Options page, choose your language and other preferences, and then click Next.If neither the Install Windows page nor the System Recovery Options page appear, and you're not asked to press any key, you might need to change some system settings. To learn how to do this, see Start your computer from a Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. If you are using the Windows installation disc or USB flash drive, click Repair your computer.

Select the Windows installation you want to repair, and then click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool to open it.

A:Please help me, I Have Asus K43s, Windows 7 Home Basic 64 bit,

Hello kaleigh. Couple of things you can try.

If the problem has just recently begun you could try rolling back your machine to a date/time prior to the problem first starting with System Restore.

System Restore

Run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) The scan will look for damaged or corrupt system files that could be affecting Windows Explorer. If any problems are found, run the scan 3 times rebooting after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Microsoft has an article that may help and there are some additional suggestions in another help article. Don't forget to perform your routine maintenance chores like: run a full scan with your anti-virus suite and even run a few more free on-demand scans like Malwarebytes, ESET Online Scanner, etc; run disk cleanup; run check disk; defrag;

Windows Explorer may crash in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Windows Explorer Randomly Freezes or Restarts

So my computer was running on a broken version of windows, and I decided to buy a new disk and install. After installing quite smoothly, I found out that my laptop couldn't find any wireless network at all, even though my home is bathed in Wi-Fi networks. I tried to connect to the internet via wire, but it still couldn't connect. Help?

I'm using MSI GE60
Cpu: Intel core i74700mq
Gpu: NVIDIA geforce gt 750M

A:Problems after installing windows 7 Home basic 64x

Anytime you install or reinstall Windows you will also have to install drivers.
Go to the MSI website for most of your drivers here: http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GE60_0NC.html#down-driver

While you can use the video drivers you find there, for the most recent video drivers go to the Nvidia website.

Are you talking about changing the icon in the notification area (lower rt, next to clock)? If so, I dont know if that can be done...

But, there are plenty of cool wireless networking gadgets that do exactly what you are talking about!

Help please!

Hi Ash,
Nothing wrong in that report at all.

The server referal error points towards a lack of access to it, is it your ISP's?, have you reset your ssid and password.

The Update error, service not started is spp??

For starters can you run the Windows update Troubleshooter, try updating again.

if that fails can you run/post the results from this link,
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

and from the Windows update log the last day entries

Hi,

I just recently purchased a second dell computer. I was having problems installing windows xp sp2 on my old computer so i used the Vista CD that came with my new computer and installed it on my old one(I'm aware this may be illegal).

I've been reading up on this about a 30 day trial period, so my question is will their be a lockdown after 30 days on my old computer asking for a cd key? It never asked for one in the first place but i have a feeling it may. I just don't want to be caught off guard on this.

Also, if i end up having to purchase another OS im going to get Vista 64-Bit Premium and install it on my new computer. Would i have a problem using the CD-key from my new computer on the old one?

Can someone inform me if this is going to happen.

A:Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit on two computers

Nevermind, dell uses OEM versions of Operating systems, which i found out that cannot be installed on another computer. Guess I'll just have to buy another OEM for my old computer.
