I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.
Please help me out.

A:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

Hi,

I have a dual boot of Fedora and Windows, and when I boot into Fedora, my headphones work fine. When I boot into Windows 7 64bit, my headphones don't work. My laptop speakers work fine however, and I tried re-installing drivers. I made sure that my headphones are the default playback device, and I only have one headphone jack.

Other people who had this issue solved it by replacing their audio jack, but for me that is not a problem because the audio jack works fine when I boot into Fedora.

Please help!

Janac

A:Laptop speakers working, but headphone jack not working only on Window

Normally, the "Speakers" (PC sound) is set as the Default Playback device and not Headphones. In fact, newer RealTek sound systems do not even show the Headphones when plugged in.

Are you using the correct sound drivers? Not the generic Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec.

What all is listed in the Device Manager, Sound section?

So recently the sound on my desktop and my laptop has stopped working. For seemingly no reason. I really don't understand it.

I first noticed it with my desktop. The sound just randomly stopped working. But not...entirely. It's really strange and complicated what's been happening, so bare with me while I try to explain it as best I can.

PC:
First time sound stopped working on PC. Restarted computer, sound came back, no issues.

Second time I woke up to find VLC frozen. Sound wasn't working. I restarted VLC. No sound. Found out that there was no sound on the computer at all. When I'd try to increase the volume on VLC, it would only change within an interval of ten percent. So it was at 50 percent initially. Would not let me go below 50%, but not above 10%. Sound didn't work anyway. Restarted, sound returned VLC working fine.

Third time I was playing Dragon Age: Inquisition. Sound worked fine, using my headset (Turtle Beach). Went to speakers to lay down and watch some shows on VLC. No sound on speakers. Switched to Turtle Beach again, sound returned. Restarted VLC, now suddenly no sound on VLC OR speakers. Had to restart computer, no issues after restart.

Laptop:
First time sound stopped working, used the "disable audio and reenable audio driver," didn't solve anything. Restarted, sound came back. Sound stopped working again same day, restarted, sound came back.

The next time I restarted the audio driver (Realtek) and then I shut down Explorer and then restar... Read more

A:Sound on Laptop and Desktop Randomly Stops Working and Working

Update: I'm not at home to test my PC, but I think I discovered the issue. It seems to possibly be a glitch or something with flash player.

After watching an episode of Daily Show on Hulu, I went back to Tumblr and saw that a video didn't have sound, and then all sound on my computer was suddenly gone. I then tried something out, and shut down flashplayer. That temporarily brought sound back.

But it quickly went away.

Then I shut down Firefox and flash player entirely, and sound comes back even when Flash Player comes up.

What could cause this?

Hello.
I have a dell inspiron n4010

Basically the sound doesn't work unless its in a hdmi or headphones. It won't play sound out of the laptop itself. I've updated the drivers and checked the bios, and it seems to be enabled. What can be the problem?

A:Sound is not working on laptop. Drivers updated, still not working.

Digital Audio (HDMI) Is the standard Windows driver for sound. You need the realtek drivers which can be found here - http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/uk/en/ukdhs1/Product/inspiron-14r

Download the driver (listed under audio).
Make sure the on-board audio is on in the bios, disconnect from the internet, uninstall all sound drivers and reboot.
Install the driver you downloaded and reboot.

An then reconnect to the internet. (This prevents Windows from reinstalling the Digital Audio HDMI before you can install the correct audio drivers).

Post back and let us know how it goes

Hi all,

I'm not too technically minded so I'll explain this as best I can and hope somebody can help me out.

A few weeks ago my media player stopped working - it flashes onto the screen for a split second and then disappears or just doesn't respond at all. Also the HP Advisor isn't working properly and keeps saying "an error ocurred" links don't work on the help section so I went to the HP site to try to get help there. I opened one of these instant help chat boxes and a technician  phoned me, said he could help etc mentioned a one off charge and it took me half an hour to find out how much etc. He had remote access to my laptop and was running scans that found several thousand problems and now I'm worried that he may have "planted" something in my pc. When I told him I couldn't pay what he was asking he finished the call pretty quick and left me to it.

How do I fix my problem and how do I found out if he left something malicious on my pc? I'm scared to do internet banking now :-(

Those are questions that you should be asking HP support, IMO.

ASUS Notebook G60Vx Series

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
A few days ago my internet suddenly stopped working. I plugged in the ethernet cord and everything worked fine. Checking the properties in the device manager showed the device was working properly, I also tried resetting it to make sure it was enabled but it did not work.

Upon troubleshooting, the "Windows Network Diagnostic" said the problems was that the Wireless adapter was not turned on. Using the switch on the front of the laptop as well as the function keys does nothing. Usually a graphic pops up showing if the WiFi is on or off, changinging transparent to show the WiFi is disabled. Now when I turn the switch on it always appears transparent, effectively going from off to off

So I know the computer reads both the function keys and the switch on the front but both methods never actually turns the adapter on. I just finished a system restore and nothing has changed

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

A:Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

Maybe the switch or adapter is defective. Some other ideas ...

Do you have an ASUS utility to also turn the wireless on/off? (I have an HP utility on one of my laptops that will individually control the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the physical switch is on.)

In Device Manager right click on the adapter - Properties - Advanced tab. Sometimes there is a Property in there that allows turning the adapter on/off.

If the card is easily accessible through a cover on the laptop's bottom remove and carefully and firmly replace the card several times to fix any potential looseness or corrosion problems.

I recently purchased an ASUS A555DG-EHFX to take over for my wife's Win7 ASUS K50IJ-BBZ5 (both are 64-bit).

Obviously getting Windows 10 up and running out of the box was a breeze. Configuring WLAN connectivity was also easy, even though I have a hidden SSID and access control on devices on the router. Even getting Office up and running was fine - just uninstalled from the old computer, downloaded an installer file from Microsoft, using the product key, and that was fine.

The one hiccup has been getting my files and configuration settings (such as browser history and passwords and cookies) from the old computer to the new.

I have read that one can run Windows Easy Transfer on a Win7 machine, which I did (to an external HD), then copy the migwiz and migration folders from the system32 subfolder of the Win7 machine, to somewhere on the new machine, and run the migwiz.exe program from the migwiz folder.

This appeared to "know what it was doing" - it identified the user profiles captured in the transfer data, and allowed me to select which ones to transfer.

But when the process completed, I can't find any of the files from the Win7 laptop, and I can't see any of the profiles and configurations - the files themselves, or evidence that the computer is accessing them.

Also, the old laptop had a C/D HD partition, as does this, and it was pretty much program files on C and data (.docx and .xlsx files, etc.) on the D partition.

After running migwiz, the new computer ... Read more

Have been having this problem for a while now.

Every so often, the headhphone jack on my laptop just stops working after hours and hours of the laptop being on.

The built-in speakers of the laptop work fine. What happens is that while the computer is in use (after some random amount of time), any hardware plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop will not playback sound. This includes headphones, speakers and the like. The sound device manager in control panel shows sound being output, and if the headphones/speakers are disconnected, the audio plays fine on the built-in speakers on the laptop.

I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes this problem. I have tried resinstalling the driver several times. I am 100% sure it isn't the headphones of the speakers that I use as I use these speakers and headphones on many other devices (phone, tablet etc.)

The only way that this issue gets fixed is if the computer is shut down and then rebooted (a restart doesn't work, the computer has to literally lose power for the problem to be fixed).

It seems very intermittent and I'm not sure how to approach this problem

Any ideas?

A:Headphone Jack on Laptop Stops Working Until Laptop is Powered Off

One idea would be a look the power plan in use. If you are running with the default Balanced power plan you may be seeing that nterfere by conserving battery power temporarily turning the audio off being a constant drain. Another thought could be a result of the onboard audio chip itself getting too warm where the hardware protection circuit will then come in and deactivate all sound. That is usually seen as far as the cpu temp as well as other major components. The audio being onboard would also be monitored by the bios not so much by Windows.

The other possible cause of losing sound would be the headphone jack or the board end having a cold solder point getting warm and expanding just enough to break the connection until cooled off. The complete shutdown of power would tend to suggest a temp or regulation issue where either the power plan or temp monitoring would have to be watched. And one more thing would be setting the laptop on a fan cooled stand or effective notebook cooling pad to draw heat away from the unit if you are not already using one. Laptops are known to get quite warm with extended use since everything is packed into a tight space with the typical serious lack of air flow unlike the usual desktop with front, rear, and side or top case fans in use if not water cooled.

You have some things to consider in the list of things there. Increased overall cooling, not planning to use the laptop for extended periods of time which can allow for something to overheat i... Read more

The second instance, which I havent been able to solve, is the keyboard keys. Certain keys will stop working after some short time after taking apart the computer, usually a couple hours to a couple days.

After the hard reset the computer started, but froze on the Windows start up screen. Afterwards it still quit booting after two or three seconds. Stayed away from it for a week or so trying to figure out what was wrong with it/where I could get help. Came back to it today to try and it turned on again, but this time it stopped on the initial dark screen and now it is a black screen with green lines all around it and some blue lines. Ok I've searched all over the Internet for hours and still havnt found the solution I've been looking for. Excuse me for any mistakes or leaving something out I'll do my best.
I just bought an asus ul50vt laptop(windows 7) without a hard drive. I bought a new hard drive separately which is a Fujitsu 2.5" 120gb. Everything on and in the laptop is all manufacture so nothing has been replaced or changed.

So heres the issue. I popped the hdd in my asus and powered it on an I got missing bootmgr. So I put in the windows 7 dvd(burnt not original) but it just attempts to read and automatically goes and tries to boot from the new hdd. And it's goes in the same cycle. So I had the idea to disconnect the hdd in my desktop and connect the new hdd to my desktop. I booted from the same windows 7 installation DVD but this time the the desktop gave me the option to boot from dvd(it said press any key to boot from cd) so I installed windows 7, went through the whole process and used it like a brand new computer. I shut the desktop down, disconnected the new hdd and reconnected it to my asus. It started to boot but when it got to "starting windows", it froze for about 1/2 second and the blue screen came on for mayne 1/4 of a second at the most. Then restarted itself into the same cycle. I tried the windows 7 DVD but it again Acted like it read it and went straight to the hdd into the cycle again.

Hi there, Welcome to SF

Couple of points, firstly i dont think theres anything wrong, i believe the only problem is that your machine is not booting from the disc its trying to boot the HDD which was initially blank and then from another machine hence the blue screen.

All you need to do is get the HDD in the target machine and get it to boot from disk by hitting F2 on startup and selecting it, then you should be good for claen install formatting drive on the way Clean Install Windows 7 guidelines here

Try holding the Esc key down while booting and the press F11 to run the system recovery.  If this does not work, you might have to boot from a recovery USB to restore the laptop.  If you did not create one, you can order one from HP.  If this has Windows 10 on it, you can also do a fresh install using the downloadable installation media from Microsoft.

There are no indications of driver errors and the relevant driver is up to date. Are there any further tests I might try or known fixes? Thanks.

A:Laptop LAN i/f not working

If the ethernet successfully connects to the LAN but there is no internet access then the problem is likely a firewall.

If the ethernet does not connect to the LAN there is a very small chance of a misconfigured or corrupted firewall, but it sounds like you a describing a defective NIC.

I have an 4yr. old HP laptop with new power supply that will not start. This laptop came from a college student that thought when you messed up the OS you bought another. He gave it to a friend, but without a power supply. My friend bought one that was supposed to be a replacement. After plugging it in the computer it booted up but only into safemode. This was for a short period. After computer was shut off it would not reboot.

When you push power button all lights come on ( power,HD, and battery chargeing) bout for only a few seconds. My quess is the MB is gone. Any Ideas? Suggestions?

hi
I have bought a vga to component cable and a s-video to rca cable. I cannot get neither of them to work. I have a panasonic viera 42" HDTV but it doesn't have a vga port on the back of it so I cannot use a vga to vga cord. I have another HDTV slightly newer but same brand (panasonic viera 32") with vga port in it so I have a vga to vga cord working fine to this laptop. I don't have that tv here so I want to get my 42" one to work. I have tryed both of them but the tv screen is blank. My vga to component says its connected on the laptop but nothing happens on the screen. It has AV1, AV2, AV3 and HDMI channels. I have tryed changing screen resolution and all different settings. I have got it on the right AV channel but nothing happens.???

So, my laptop fan hasn't been working lately and i'm not too sure why. I'ved checked my power options and my cooling system is on active intead of passive, I went into the BIOS and the fans are set to always on. Last night, my power options for my cooling systems were on passive, so I set it to active and restarted my laptop, then the fans started spinning like normal. Then after about 2 hours of gaming, the temps were at 60c - 70c but suddenly the fan stopped working and the temps went up to 80c - 90c. I don't have a can of compressed air, and too worried to kill my laptop using a vacuum cleaner. But i've tried blowing into the fan vents several times but the fan still won't work. If someone can give some possible solutions, that'd be amazing. Thanks

I have tried to reinstall Windows 7 genuine from Cd. But this solution is also not working.

A:Laptop is not working

System model?  Age?  Define "not working" -- won't powerup at all?
In that case, unplug, remove or disconnect the battery, and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory and hard drive.  Try powering up on AC only - if it will, but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If it still won't power up on AC only after the reset above, the mainboard is likely bad.

I keep getting a system fan (90b) error message on start up.How can I test the fan to make sure is working or not? On the Bios is already set to "Always On". Also, I already did the troubleshooting steps that I found for this which told me to blow air through the vent openings to remove any dust that has accumulate inside.

A:Fan on Laptop Not Working

The code is selftest and i recommend to you to replace the cpu fan. If you are in warranty take it to HP Service Center

I'm new to the forum and hope someone can help, I have a Samsung laptop (details below) with a HDMI port and I recently purchased a 32" BUSH LCD TV and a Belkin HDMI cable. When I connect the Laptop to the TV via the HDMI cable nothing happens :/ . Below I have listed the full spec of the laptop and TV, if anyone requires any more information I'd be happy to provide it.

Kind Regards

Hi Liam, have you tried pressing the FN key and F4 at the same time while the tv is connected to the laptop? This combination of buttons basically tells the laptop that you want to use an external display, if it doesn't work then you may need to check in the intel graphics properties (right click desktop and select graphics options) and see if the HDMI needs to be enabled, hope this helps and post back if you need more help.

I have a 4-year old laptop (Toshiba) whose DVD has hardly been used, but nevertheless stopped reading a year back. I have just purchased a new printer and cannot load the new drive either via the supplied CD or online (after an hour or so I am kicked off the site.) Can anyone help?

Sam.

A:DVD on laptop not working

Do you hear any noise when you insert the DVD??
you may have to buy a external DVD reader like this one if we cannot solve the issue :http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SE-208AB-TSBS-External-DVD-Writer/dp/B005KQ0S8S/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1350933818&sr=1-1&keywords=external dvd drive

Remove the laptops battery and see if the laptop will power up on the AC adaptor only
