Preferred Solution: clear offline folder?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have scoured for a complete fix for this issue since I had 3 laptops using the Offline Files to keep all my documents, pictures, music, etc. in sync between them and a server that moved on to a more peaceful existence without bits and bytes.
There is a Mr Fixit for XP, and Windows 7 but not Windows 8. A Mr FixIt for windows 8 would be appreciated, but even better would be a button or hotkey to allow the Offline Files cache to be completely wiped, in case anyone is listening. Note that the
registry key location for Offline Files in Windows 7 & 8 is completely different even though the same FormatDatabase DWORD is used.
I found another post that told to do the following to reset the cache:
To reset Offline file in Windows 8, We have to reinitialize the offline files cache all together:

Open up registry editor (WARNING: Only for Advanced Users)
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc
Add a new key (folder) called Parameters
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Csc\Parameters, add a new DWORD called FormatDatabase and set its value to 1Save, Close, Reboot (added by me)
However, this did not fix it for me. After some tinkering I learned that the Offline Files registry change did not format the cache unless the Offline Fil... Read more

I like how Windows 7 shows a preview of a folder's contents by having little icons stick out of the folder. However, I put a picture into a desktop folder that I no longer want looking out at me every day. I took the picture out of the folder but that little icon carries on unchanged. I tried putting a different picture in the folder, but it is still that original one peeking out of the folder. How do I reset this?
Thanks, Gordon

Could it be in Control Panel=>Options Folders, check the box "Always Show Icons Never Thumbnails"

You can either Disable Thumbnails Cache if you need in registry.. (attached thumbnail for the path)
Create a Dword 32bits "NoThumbnailCache" set to 1, log Off log On.

I work in a network environment where the user cannot attach any kind of devices through any on the ports. so that wipes out the ability to create my own back up using hardware. The disc burning ability is also switched off. I am on a Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine.

I started work at a news site when there was an idea to restructure all the folders to make them more manageable. While this was happening somebody renamed a folder but it turned out it deleted the sub-folders which wiped out months of research and 3 weeks of personal work. It turns out there is no backup of the network share drive. This of course, pointed out a majot flaw in our recovery plan. However, the network guys are working on a way to solve this problem.

I want to make sure this doesn't happen again at my level and looked for a way to synchronize folders between the share and the local drive. What I found was the offline folder option which allows you to work on the files if the network goes down.

After this lengthy explanation, I want to ask if somebody wouldn't mind explaining how the offline folders work. If the share drive folder or files get wiped out, do I have a local copy on my machine? If it does not work this way, how could I accomplish this with the restricted environment?

Any help would be appreciated.

I have set the workstation up so that when the user logs on and off the my documents synchronises back to the Main site. since there are more and more documents in this folder its becoming very slow. when the user clicks on my documents its taking around 15 seconds to open, i have checked all the dns and ip settings and its as it was originally when it was quick, is there a way to make the folder offline without terminating the VPN link so that they can work on it and then when they log off, it syncs back to the server.

Recently a coworker was trying to CUT/PASTE files from their My Documents folder to another location. During the procedure our file server crashed and shutdown. Their My Documents folder is a re-directed and synchronized folder.

I was able to restore the users entire home drive from the previous nights backup to another location. To date the user has been working from this secondary location but wishes to have all the files moved back to their My Documents so that synchronization can occur for offline access.

I am unsure of how to go about doing this safely.

I'm thinking that I should re-initialize the users Offline Cache and Database first, delete what is in My Documents now, and then copy the restored data back to My Documents. Then, at that point in time re-enable offline files and perform a sync.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Our users "my documents" folders are set up for redirection to \\ourserver\users

We have an XP based machine ( machine X ) that was used by person A, each time they logged off it synchronized as expected.

However machine X is now used by another user B.

Whenever user B logs off user A's offline files still keep synchronising, have deleted all the files from the offline folder I still cannot see a way of stopping user A's files and starting the new user B's files sync.

User A's files were accounting type files and are sensitive files that should not be viewed by others, however by still sync to the offline files folder they can be easily viewed.

Any thoughts as how I can stop this and re-direct the new users files to sync as I need to release this pc for general use.

A:Offline files / folder sync

You need to unmark the old users' folders for offline use, apply, reboot and make sure that the machine can see the domain and be made happy on that front, log in as the new user and then mark those new folders for offline use.

Just about everyone in my company has Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and we are running Windows Server 2008R2 as our domain controllers.  I have a group policy to redirect the Desktop, Documents, Favorites, Music, Pictures and Videos folders to a network location.
It has been working fine while everyone was using desktop computers in the domain.
Now I have two new users who have laptops and of course will need to use them outside of our network.  But when I tried logging into the laptop off-site I get error messages about not being able to find the redirected folders.
So I have been looking into folder redirection with offline files, thinking this was the solution.  However, I can't seem to find the settings that the articles I'm looking at reference.  For example, this article references User Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Network\Offline Files but I can't find it in my Group Policy Management Editor.  In fact, User Configuration\Administrative Templates doesn't even exist.
So what am I missing here?  How can I make these laptops work outside my organization?
Thanks in advance,

Since user has been migrated to Vista Enterprise, offline files have not been functioning correctly. It appears to ONLY be that way for newly created files and folders. Sync log indicates that "the files are in use by another system."

All other users syncing to the same server are fine.

I've disabled Indexing, but that did not take care of it.
I've also googled the heck out of this. Nothing worked.

If I go to the actual server location and sync from there, it works without issue, but not the other way. There's a similar error for every created file or folder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried searching for "offline" in the forum and scanned through the 250 odd titles that came up but could not find reference to relocating the offline files folder. I frequently take an image of the system drive as a backup but, with an ever increasing offline folder (windows\csc), this is getting unworkable so I want to move the folder to my data drive (D:\).

I've tried using a symbolic link to a folder on the C drive (as I've successfully done with the OneDrive folder) but win10 seems to object and stops working.

Surprisingly, with google there's loads of references to doing this with previous versions of windows but I can't find anything Win10 specific. Does anybody know of a reliable way of relocating the csc folder?

Ok,  a  friend of mine works in a school and they still have XP (no comment).
They now have Server 2012 R2 AD but have a problem with offline files.

They have 2 VLANs
They have 2 DC's (One in each Vlan)
The DC is also the file server in VLAN 1
They have Windows XP & Windows 7 PCs in both vlans
Offline files is enabled on the clients
There is a GPO to redirect My documents to DC1 on VLAN 1 using "\\DC1\share\My documents"
The only issue they are having is that the XP clients in VLAN 2 are getting Offline files cannot reach the server error even though the network is working fine.  Able to ping both DCs .  Able to manually browse the path, no detailed information
in the event logs.
Any idea why only XP clients in VLAN 2 have the issue with offline files?

Hey Guys,

I've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:

Go to MMC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.

It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere. Thanks for any help.

A:GP for permanently changing shared folder offline permissions?

Sorry, forgot to mention the environment. We're running 100% Windows 7 workstations and an SBS 2011 server.

The whole point of my question is to ultimately enable a WORKING 'restore previous versions' feature for each workstation across the domain. As far as I can see, after much testing, with the setting I'm trying to permanently enable turned on, restore points actually do back up files for RPV... and with it off, RPV is totally useless on every workstation.

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my user's home folders from one storage server to another storage server. We have offline files sync enabled and users use to work at work in offline mode and the files/folders sync when they connect to the company's network.
I have done some testing before migrating and found an issue that need assistance from your guys.

I pick a test user say "Testuser01" and logout him out from the system. I have copied all home drive stuff from Sharedserever-1 (Old) to Sharedserever-2 (New) for test user and make the required changes in AD profile and GPO for drive mapping. As
the Testuser01's documents pointing to H-drive (My Documents) are available offline on laptop in Documents folder. Now I have worked offline as "tesetuser01" and created some test files but when I logged in and connected
with my company's network H-drive is it correctly pointing to new Sharedserever (i.e. Sharedserever-2) and Documents path also redirected to the new server location. However the files created in offline mode were disappeared instead of sync with
the new Sharedserever.
I could not figure out why and I don't know if it something with CSC - Client-Side Caching folder ?
Any help would be appreciated.

The day after my latest Win 7 Update, I suddenly started getting the error message:

Besides this message, my emails struggle to open, I cannot attach files to outgoing emails, etc. I tried the Recovery function, to take my laptop to a date prior to the Windows Update I did on 5/21, but it couldn't execute for that date, or for prior dates (which may be another separate problem to deal with). Last year I upgraded my old Small business server 2003 to server 2012 standard and shortly after had issues with some of the offline files on the server, we use almost all laptops here that users take home at night and we have folder redirection set up through
group policy for the my documents, and pictures folders stored in \\server\Network\users\ and these folders sync locally, However we also have network drives set up pointing to \\server\Network\ and \\server\network\scans as drives N: and S:.

Files in these 2 network drives somehow got set to be available offline and caused issues with versioning and  people coming in and finding themselves in "offline mode". Thinking this to be user error I updated group policy to employ these
2 policies:
Remove "Make Available Offline" command Enabled
Remove "Work offline" command Enabled
Today however I found that a laptop that had been deployed After all of this had been put in place was having the same problem, with files on the N: drive showing as trying to sync outside of the users folder

Is there a way that I can lock this down to only sync the items in the user folder for documents and pictures? Outside of that folder we have other company documents and databases that get problematic if they try to sync changes between users and it's causing
a lot of issues.

I ran into an issue with a user's computer. Initially, he was experiencing problems with the computer running slow. A previous technician diagnosed the issue and decided to run Combofix to clear any issues that might be causing this. However, in running Combofix, the files in the folder C:/windows/csc folder/d6 or %systemroot%/csc folder/d6 were treated as malware and moved to C:/Qoobox/Quarantine/C/Windows/csc folder/d6 and renamed with the extension .vir. In doing so, the user has lost some of his data. Although the data represents files on a share drive on a server, in syncing the share drive's files in order to make them available offline, some of those files were lost. Well, at least that's how it seems as the user's files seemed to have disappeared around the same time Combofix was run.

We've tried a system restore to the day BEFORE Combofix was run to no avail. We've also tried to use batch file renaming programs as we made copies of the files in the Quarantine in order to get them out of quarantine and rename them without the .vir extension, put them back in their original folder and resync, but that did not work. The Windows resynchronization process reports that some of the files can't be restored because the user is not connected to the server, even though he is. Nonetheless, after that attempt, the files that were missing are still missing.

The files themselves vary from Excel spreadsheets to Word documents. The scan was perfo... Read more

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.

Steps taken so far.

Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
Check various registry entry settings.
Disabled cashing on the File server.
Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.

I have spent hours researching this error online to no avail.

The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit
The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2

Any help or ideas would be most welcome.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have been Googling all over the place last couple of days and looking through hundreds of regkeys but cannot find the answer.

We have 1800 PC's using Offline files to a NAS location. Even though the Group Policy is set to force PC's Offline no matter what the latency value. I have noticed some PC's that have Offline files enabled but are set to work online. Maybe set manually
before the GPO was applied. Anyway I was wondering if there is a way to detect on numerous PC's whether a PC is set to work Offline or Online? I have been looking to see if a regkey changes when the Work Offline / Online button is pressed on the file menu
of the redirected folder.

I have found a key that changes if you hit the button Work Online/ Offline button
manually HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache\OnlineTransitionLog Value - (name of nas share) but this clears when the PC is rebooted or logged out and does not reappear unless you do the switch again manually.
This will not work when I try to scan all the PC's.

Help would be much appreciated.

Let's say \\Server01\Users\username is the share that is available offline.

When attempting to access documents in the user share, the "Offline Status" is usually listed as "Disconnected" in the Explorer window.  When opening up Sync Center, it also shows that the Offline Files are "Disconnected" in its listed "Status".

While this occurs however, the server is available on the network.  It can be pinged as well as other non-offline shares accessed seamlessly.

The Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles operational log file shows that the path to the folder is being connected ever 2 minutes, only to be disconnected about 5 seconds later - not to reconnect for another 2 minutes. See the following events which happen continuously:

Information 2/7/2012 2:30:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected.
Information 2/7/2012 2:30:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected.

I am having trouble linking my hotmail account with Outlook 2007.
It was working last week just fine but I deleted my profile and all the .pst and .ost files in the c:\outlook folder because I wanted to start outlook from scratch and reconfigure all my email accounts in outlook. I did back up all the .pst and .ost files on a thumb drive before I deleted from my HDD. I even uninstalled and deleted outlook connector.
I reinstalled outlook connector today and went through the steps of adding my hotmail account. After I click finish a new folder pops up in the left pane with my email account but when I click on it, it reads "the set of folders cannot be opened. the file hotmail.ost is not an offline folder file."
I have tried deleting my profile and the .ost files, and I bought advanced exchange recovery but that failed to fix it. I have spent the past 3 hours trying to figure this out with no luck. I moved the old hotmail.ost file that I saved back into the outlook folder but that didnt help either.
Any suggestions?

Hi, each of our 2000+ laptop users use a 110MB of our DFSr for redirected folders (Document, Desktop & Favorites). This was working fine until we discovered their Offline Files cache was not restricted to 110MB so many are now over the 110MB limit
for Offline Files and this is causing various issues, e.g. deleted files are reappearing. So we need to set both group policy settings "Size of auto-cached files" and "Total size of offline files" in "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\Network\Offline Files" to 110MB and then reduce each user's Offline Files to under 110MB. The latter is the tricky bit. We could deploy an SCCM package to re-initialize the offline files cache and database (Offline-Folders) using "REG ADD
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\NetCache" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f" but any files in a user's Offline Files that hasn't yet been synch'd will be lost and this approach will be unacceptable to the business.

How can we overcome this? Could we somehow backup the Offline Files folder (C:\Windows\CSC) using a script/USMT, without requiring user intervention, before deploying the FormatDatabase reg key update? If so, how please?

I can setup offline folders on a Windows 2000 Pro client so the files are available when offline.

Is it possible to configure offline folders so that even when the computer is connected to the network the offline folder is still used.

What we want to acheive is for the notebook user to always use a local copy of their data but to also have an up to date copy on the server.

If i need to clarify anything or provide more details then please let me know.

I have discovered that if I disconnect my DSL from my computer, IE will work, the sidebar will work, and most of the programs will operate correctly. If I connect it into the back of the computer, almost immediately Windows Vista will report a problem and start looking for a solution. IE will also prompt "stopped working" and the sidebar will quit . Also most programs that require some type of installer wizard will not open, but shutdown.

Does anyone have any ideas or know a solution to the problem.

Help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

We have few laptops (windows 7 pro) for sales rep and Offline file enable to sync their documents which are on SBS 2011 server.
I don't know why it try to sync some other users (My video , My music , etc ) files and error says "access denied" or

“The Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process”

we have tried many times and confirm there's no one using those files but still same error
I found this article on forumbut not sure how much this valid to SBS 2011, and if it's known issue why not there's fix patch yet from Microsoft

On the 2003 server I had to ADD this reg entry and set it to 0:
OplocksDisabled REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 0 (not disabled)

And then Changed this entry to 1:

EnableOplocks REG_DWORD 0 or 1
Default: 1 (enabled)

I have a new printer for my Vista, the Dell v725w. However, it will not print. My problem is with the Vista as the printer can scan and make copies. I just for whatever reason cannot print. Whenever I click "Use Printer Offline" to turn the on the printer online, instead it states "Printer status Offline-Offline". It says "offline" twice! When I click again, it goes back to "Use Printer Offline". I cannot turn the printer back online as "Use Printer Online" won't show back up! I also get a message saying that it is a communication error.

On a side note, does the "WI-fi" and "Ethernet" icons on the v725w need to light up to indicate that the printer is communication with the Vista desktop? If so, that could be my problem and I don't know how to turn on Wi-Fi/Ethernet" to fix the communication.

I hope someone can help. Thanks.
