Infernal "Not Responding" Error

Q: Infernal "Not Responding" Error

Hello. I get the dreaded "Not Responding" error many times throughout the day, usually accompanied by that nonstop spinning and buffering wheel. This causes a delay of several seconds to over a minute before I can type or use the cursor. Is this common in Windows 7 and Chrome?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am infected with this crap and have used the following tools to try to get rid of it:
Windows Defender, Unible PowerSuite (SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster & Spyware Protector) and Norton's One Button Checkup and WinDoctor.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

Atempted the 5 Step Process before posting and Panda ActiveScan froze and crashed after scanning 59253 files, but not before identifying 28 spyware files.

Here's my extra.txt log from Deckard's:

The files in one of my folders aren't showing up. It's only that specific folder that is having problem. Whenever I try to access it, no files show up even though there are clearly files in it (Properties say 20.5 GB). And it will always stuck at "not responding"

This is what it looks like:

I've found a possible solution but since it deals with command prompt, I want to make sure I don't make things worse. I need to know what exactly the following command does:

attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*, in which g is the drive letter.

This video: says it reveals hidden folders but I'm not sure if it's relates to my problem exactly since Properties doesn't have "Hidden" checked. It only has "Read-Only" checked under the General tab.

I have a 3 year old Dell computer with Windows 2000 Service pack 3 and McAfee antivirus. Well it all started gradually, first as I work in MS Word ,some of my docs i couldnt "save as" as this function freezed up and the program stopped responding, and now all of my documents do not even open, and they do not open from directly MSWord as well,i just can open a blank new doc, thats about it. If I restart the comp everything opens just well for about 5-10 min, and then stops responding, once i close the unresponsive tab, the whole screen just kinda shuts down for a min. and all the icons dissappear and then gradually come back. And now more and more programs on my computer are not responding, and even internet Explorer takes a while to open.
Well, being the fan of this forum here's what i already did:
-run my Antivirus-didnt show anything
-performes a system restore
-run fix and repair feature in MS Word itself
-performed Smithfraudfix cleanup from Safe mode
-run "Malwarebytes'-antimalware scanner(which found 9 infected files and deleted them)
Well, unfortunately none of those worked in terms of freeze up that i keep getting. Cant really work on this computer any more and cant open my existing files-please any help will be so so much appreciated!!!
Do not know if that might be one of the reasons, but i couldnt install the update of Windows service Pack 3 ,it just hung up in a middle, and then i figured it out and just disabled the antivirus -so everything ... Read more

I have an XPS15 that has been "upgraded" to Windows 10 but I am constantly getting this error. I have attempted to find updated drivers, and I found one from Sept. 2015, but I'm still getting the same problem. It is incredibly frustrating. Help.

A:XPS15 error: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered"

What is the exact system model? When did the issue start? Was the issue seen when the system was on Win 8 or only after you upgraded to Win 10?
If the system was working fine earlier while on Win 10, then perform a system restore to restore the system to a point where it was working fine - http://bit.ly/1JEw2ov
For XPS 9530:
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1Qpam2M and reinstall the Intel video driver from the same site. If the issue persists, then uninstall the existing video driver and install the driver from Intel site - http://intel.ly/1h4oaGT
For XPS 9550:
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1XOjEeg and reinstall the Intel video driver from the same site. If the issue persists, then uninstall the existing video driver and install the driver from Intel site - http://intel.ly/1qEcrCW
If the issue is not resolved, then create a new local admin account and check - http://bit.ly/1JoFhcw
If the issue is seen only on Win 10 and was working fine on Win 8.1, then downgrade to Win8.1 and check - http://bit.ly/1RMaCdK
You could later perform a clean install of Win10 and check - http://bit.ly/1VxGDgb

I have purchased Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060, installed the latest drivers (version 372.54 at the time) and everything was fine. When version 372.70 came out I didn't bother installing it for quite some time but when had plenty of time, I installed it. On the next day I got "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." error (checked Event Viewer) and the HDMI sound disappeared. I checked for newer drivers and 372.90 was hot on the spot, so I downloaded it and installed. On next day, to my surprise same error happened. I decided to go back to driver version 372.54, since it was working fine, report about issue to NVIDIA and wait for the fix. Yesterday (almost 3 weeks later), with driver version 372.54 same error happened again. I have restarted computer and sound returned. I am planing to install 373.06 today, but if error happens randomly, there is no way telling if it will help or not right away.
Some other info:
Before installing driver, I uninstall it completely using latest version of Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

Hello Gamertronica,

A piece of malware could be on your system and that would cause it to run slowly.

Please can you download and install the following programs, and run a full scan with them:
Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software
HitmanPro 3 - SurfRight
AdwCleaner Download
Junkware Removal Tool Download

Malwarebytes will product a log, please can you upload it to here? Navigate to: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Logs and upload the logs to here, which have todays date.

Instructions for running Hitman Pro:
After opening Hitman Pro, select next. Click 'no, I only want to perform a one-time scan to check this computer' and select next. It will then scan your computer. After it's finished scanning, click next and click activate free licence, which is a free-trial of it for 30 days.

Can you follow this guide, written by Gerry Conrell:

Please upload and share with everyone fresh copies of your System and Application logs from your Event Viewer.

To access the System log select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer, from the list in the left side of the window select Windows Logs and System. Place the cursor on System, select Action from the Menu and Save All Events as (the default evtx file type) and give the file a name. Do the same for the Applications log. Do not provide filtered files.

I got rid of the Windows drivers and went straight to the Intel site for the drivers.....issue remains. Tried a complete power cycle of the router and modem....issue remains (No other computers are having the DNS issues, wired and wireless). I disabled the Bonjour Service (mDNSResponder.exe)......issue remains. The is driving me nuts and I notice that the only way I can force the connection is to disable and enable the NIC. Any help?! Thanks!

Friends - On my laptop running 8.1 I need to remedy the often-seen "Display Driver Stopped Responding" display crash. On other systems equipped with AMD GPU components I could use the CCC Presets [Profiles] + Overdrive to workaround the strict Windows timing parameters, increasing the idle clock and core clock targets for the Preset, then invoking it [which requires AMD Overdrive]. On this notebook, no such option is accessible. There is a lot of chatter on the web about this and it is not new to 8.

Anyone know for SURE what a cure is? What I'm gathering is that there should be a Registry entry for a key that deals with Overdrive, but it is missing on the Registry I can see.

Otherwise, I don't know of a certain fix. Microsoft/TechNet board suggests a Registry hack to alter the base windows timing parameters but in the past I have found that not a good solution. It may cut down from 20 errors a week to four or five, but it does not have the surety that the CCC/Overdrive fix is - which targets only the GPU in use

Verify from the manufacturer that you have the correct drivers installed, I hope you did not update your drivers via Windows Update.
In some cases to avoid your problem you could downgrade your driver.

Hi there,

I am new here and I am not computer guru. So I ran the test earlier today , and everything was fine. Max temperature after 11 minutes running the test was as far as I can remember not more than 85 it stayed stable with only 1 degree difference from time to time till I stopped the test. I am with Palit Gtx570 Sonic Platinium video card. So I didn't take a screen because I thought everything was fine. Seven hours later I ran the test again and then suddenly here is what happened :

Actually I bought my computer recently. I am using Win7 64bit. I had that problem and here is what I have done:

1.Reinstalling drivers from different sources - Palit, Nvidia and disc drivers. Tried older versions.
2. Reinstalling Windows - putting first the drivers of the video and then the drivers of other devices with the purpose to try to detect if there is a driver conflict.
3. Talked with the distributor which sold me that video card and they changed it with a brand new one. The same model.
The first video card had that TDR problem quite often. This one not that often. The first one was able to force the TDR crash in two ways -no need of those test. I installed a game called - World of Warcraft and I tested it there was where i experienced TDRs for first time. After that I found out that I can force them to happen also when I am testing the " Windows experience index" - usually happens on the 3D Geometry and some other 3D tests.
Somewhere in the internet I read th... Read more

First off heres a screen of the exact message I get: http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?p=110. While playing some games, every 1-3 minutes, my screen goes black. To fix this I have to alt tab out and tab back into the game. The message i get appears on my taskbar: " "Display driver igfx stoppe responding and has successfully recovered". It is a very annoying message, and I'm using a new computer with windows vista on it. If you dont think it is a big deal then think of this : its 1v1 and your playing counter strike source. All of the sudden your screen goes black and you hear shots followed by a "HEADSHOT" "COUNTER-TERRORISTS WIN." This bug is really annoying and I need someone to give me a step by step guide to fix it.

Lately, for no explain-able reason, whenever I play a movie every 5-15 minutes I get a glitch with the picture getting stuck, audio replaying itself for a few seconds, screen turns black and everything goes back to normal, with a pop-up appearing informing me that my graphic kernel was shut down and has been restored.
I have attempted updating graphics driver (using the 310.64 nvidia beta one, after the latest didn't solve it), updated windows to latest version, and followed advices given on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2665946 with no effect.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? It has occured to me while playing movies in SMPlayer, as well as in streaming online media.

Typically the cause of a video driver glitch which can resolved by upgrading or downgrading the video drivers. I've also seen it caused by a specific app. In which case, updating the app or using a different app resolves the problem.

First time ever with this problem...
Starting a few days ago, on my home network, I've been unable to see or edit my Office 365 Sharepoint website (www.wtlinc.net) on IE or Chrome. This is only a problem on my home network. The site is visible on networks outside mine. Further, I only have this problem with my website. I can see all other websites I normally visit (including this one). Last, I've not blocked my site accidentally.

My modem/router is an Actiontec GT784WN.

After much back and forth with Sharepoint Tech Support, they can find nothing wrong with the site.

The error message I receive is "DNS Server Isn't Responding". My ISP (DSL Extreme) is no help. I'm about to call Actiontec.

Any educated guesses/solutions will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I have a brand new Asus Notebook laptop and Windows 8 OS and am using Office 2016 Proffesional. Ever since I started using the laptop, I cannot get the Home, End, Pgup and down (arrows) buttons to do what they're supposed to, nor do they respond when
I press ctrl+ either of them. This  happens when I'm working on Word. The cursor will move but it won't go to the next page or previous page, top or bottom of document. It will go the next or previous word in the sentence I'm tryping, or something
similar. When I'm on an internet site, I can sometimes get to the top of the page or bottom using the "alt+home" or other scrolling options. I tried using the arrows together with the "fn" key. Doesn't work either. I spoke to a Microsoft
techincal support person and they said they don't know what the problem is - might be something to do with the OS.
This is a very strange problem and I would most appreiciate some help here.

It's been a month since my laptop gone wrong. All programs doesn't run properly, and stop working many times. Media Player, Office, Internet explorer, all stop working frequently, and I have to wait ten second until five minutes to continue my work.

Two days ago I noticed that when I downloaded windows update, the updates wasn't saved in OS folder like it used to be. New folders named like "1ee10074..." appeared in my hard disk. I realized that the problems begin when I found new folder like this in my hard disk, and now the problems is getting worst after updates. I thought my "OS" was full, but the indicator say "11.8 GB free of 58.5 GB".

I can't delete or move the folder without permission, and try to copy them to "OS". Now each time I open a file, two windows are opened, one is my opened file and the other is blank window.

I don't have enough knowledge about computer. Can anyone help me, please?

A:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

Hello Support Users,
I'm having an issue with the OptiPlex 3040 Intel HD Graphics 530 Driver for Windows 10 Pro. The machine will work fine for awhile then while certain applications like Microsoft Excel are running, the machine will stop working and give the following error:"Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
This machine has 2 monitors so using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter doesn't work, even googling if that works or detects such is almost absent. I'm just letting whoever know it doesn't work with dual monitors on Windows 10 Pro.
I've found this link and installed the following display driver to see if that clears the issue + adjusted some PC settings in "Advanced System Settings" Under This PC : Windows still chooses what to do for visual effects and Virtual Memory is now 4096MB. I've also added the TdrRelay = 10 to the GraphicsDriver section in Registry.
Here is the link that's been suggested and the steps I've taken so far, I did skip the DELL driver and went for the initial Intel Generic Driver instead.
Is anyone else facing this issue with their onboard graphics?
Thread I've used so far to troubleshoot:www.intel.com/.../000005482.html
Any suggestions which could help or solutions for this PC?

Running Windows 7 Enterprise, 32-bit, I keep getting random freezes which last about 20-30 seconds, then the system always recovers. Generally, the mouse still moves, streaming music in not interrupted, but I can't do anything during these micro-freezes. CTRL-ALT-DEL is non-responsive at first, then once the task manager comes up, everything returns to normal. No abnnormal CPU usage. I have updated all the latest drivers, and have tried rolling back various component drivers to test it. I have overclocked this system for several years with XP, but just to be safe, I returned all setting to factory once my issues with W7 started. Still, no luck. Memtest okay. I don't know if this is a common internet issue or not, but I'd like to know how I would be able to fix this.

I'm going to provide very thorough details.

For a couple months, I've been experiencing this "www.microsoft.com not responding" error. It occurs every Sunday. I have an excellent connection, I am able go on Google and Twitter, but not Facebook, YouTube, or any other website. I am also able to search for websites and images on Google, but I cannot view them directly. On Steam, I cannot connect to the Community nor can I view the Store, but I can still chat with friends. Not only do I have this issue on my laptop, but I am also unable to surf the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, the internet on my Motorola Cliq, nor can I use the web browser on my Playstation Portable. Now, my mother had tweaked some settings on the router, allowing me to stay up to 11 PM (I'm only 16 years old, I still have to listen to parents). After that, the error occurs every day of the week.

The error message on my computer is this: "Your computer seems to be correctly configured, but the device or resource {www.microsoft.com} is not responding."

Please, I would highly appreciate any help from anybody.

A:"www.microsoft.com not responding" Error

I recommend checking to see if the website in question is even accessable at the time you are trying to connect to it. You can do this easily be using Down For Everyone Or Just Me -> Check if your website is down or up?

If the site is up and running open notepad and copy and past the following into it.

@Echo on
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save the file as Flush.bat to your desktop. Right click the bat file and select Run as Administrator. That will reset some of your connection settings, hopefully solving the issue.

I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-

A:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error. It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.† First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority††† Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Normally pressing F2 or F12 on the computer will solve this.

I've been having some problems with my computer and I've always somehow managed to work my way around the issues spyware/malware etc. have created but lately it's been getting out of hand.. Some time ago I got a virus or something that made the entire tab under "Processes" dissapear. So I could not see process-names in the task-manager. I have re-installed XP but this problem persists. I have been using a different application to monitor and handle processes.

The problem now is the constant pop-ups generated from this fake anti-virus program calling itself "Anti Virus Pro 2007" or something.. It pops up with fake commercials, and even attach itself into other explorer-windows while I view other pages.

As popups and messageboxes keep popping up, I close them, but after a while windows will open a messagebox telling me "Buffer overrun detected in e:\Windows\system32\explorer.exe" (or \\windows\explorer.exe I don't remember really but you get the idea) and explorer.exe will be terminated, sometimes taking some internet explorer windows along with it, other times explorer.exe just starts up again and all my windows remain.

I used to have Norton but was forced to remove it as it was sucking up all my CPU. It rendered my computer useless, as I mainly use it for gaming.

I've also experienced having the connection between me and my modem broken while beeing on the internet, and I don't know if my computer actually is offline or if -I'm- just... Read more

Please download ComboFix

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop.

Close all browsers. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I read a few other forum posts but didnt see anyone have the 0xc00000e9 error also. Bios boot priorities are in order if that matters.

Is there a fix without having to replace the entire HD and buy a new vista installation(preinstalled w/ no disc in the box).

Im very reluctant to take it to a service center as i can very likely fix it myself (with the help of the friendly people here of course), only problem is im having a little trouble..finding.. my HD in this damn notebook.. heh, ill figure that part out. new to notebook repair.

Thanks in advance. Danny

Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7?  Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"?
The usual response is, "You need to run regedit as an administrator".  but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!!
Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user?
So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again.  It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key".

The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI    ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!...

Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not!  So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key!  Why, Microsoft, why???!!!  Please just make the Administrator accoun... Read more

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

While using "Windows Explorer" as an FTP client I have put the system into a state where any attempts to access an FTP folder from "Windows Explorer" produces the following dialog:
Dialog Title: "FTP Folder Error"
Dialog Icon: Information Icon
Dialog Text: "Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.  Details: No more Internet handles can be allocated"
Dialog Buttons: OK
I had used the "Add a network location" feature of "Windows Explorer" to add an FTP site.  The FTP folder appears under "Computer" in the left panel of "Windows Explorer."
It is not mapped to a drive letter.  I then initiated a large FTP transfer operation by using drag-and-drop from the FTP folder to a local folder.  A portion of the transfer completed as expected but after some time it produced the "No more Internet
handles can be allocated" error.  When OK was clicked the transfer was terminated.  In this case I am using large to refer to many thousands of files and directories to be transferred as opposed to a small count of files having many bytes.
After the initial error dialog is cleared with the OK button and the transfer is terminated I can then reliably reproduce the dialog.  Any attempt to open an FTP network location
from "Windows Explorer" will produce a n... Read more
