Is it possible to have different authentication mode for SQL Server Database Engine and corresponding SQL Server instance?

Q: Is it possible to have different authentication mode for SQL Server Database Engine and corresponding SQL Server instance?

Hi,
I have installed the x64 SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with default settings and run MBSA 2.3 (using default settings too). It shows three SQL Server instances: MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS, SQLEXPRESS and SQLEXPRESS (32-bit). For the first, authentication
mode is Windows, for the rest two - mixed. Here https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/03e470dc-874d-476d-849b-c805acf5b24d/sql-mbsa-question-on-folder-permission?forum=sqlsecurity question
about such multiple instances was asked and the answer is that "MSSQL10.TEST_DB
is the instance ID for the SQL Server Database Engine of the instance, TEST_DB", so in my case, it seems that MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS is the instance ID for SQL Server Database Engine of the SQLEXPRESS instance.
I have two questions:
1) How can it be that SQL Server DB Engine instance has different authentication mode than corresponding SQL Server Instance?
2) Why 32-bit instance reported although I installed only 64-bit version?
Also, this https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/security/en-US/6b12c019-eaf0-402c-ab40-51d31dce968f/mbsa-23-reporting-sql-32bt-instance-is-running-in-mixed-mode-when-it-is-set-to-integrated?forum=MBSA question seems to be related to this
issue, but there is no answer :(.
Upd: Tried on clean Windows 8 installation and Windows 7 with the same result.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Team,
Intermittently,we are observing series of "500.0 internal server errors" are being logged to IIS log files.
That is causing an IIS server to hung and causing the web-services which are deployed on this server to throw the error "System.Web.Services.Protocols.SoapException: Server was unable to process request.
---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
Whenever there are series of 500.0 errors the Application server is failing. Need some help to find root cause. PFA Errors logged

Hi there. My first post.

I installed MySQL 5 on Vista 32-bit just now - it installed fine. The problem is that when I go to open the Server Instance Config Wizard the box is tiny and shows nothing that I can use to discern what is inside.

I tried positioning the cursor onto the side in a vain attempt to resize it - no success. Is there a way I can modify the settings so that I can actually see it?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I'm not sure if I posted in the wrong forum.

A:MySQL 5.0 Server Instance Config Wizard - cannot see anything

Hey there, welcome to TSG

I don't know if this is exactly the right forum or not; we don't get a slew of MySQL questions in Business Apps. If you feel like it isn't getting the attention it deserves, you can click on the yield icon in the first post's title bar and request it be moved somewhere more appropriate. The mods don't like it so much when we double-post, so they'll be happy to move it for you (and even pick the best forum).

Anyway. This seems similar to another MySQL/Vista thread I saw within the last month. Or maybe it only seems similar because there was another MySQL/Vista thread within the last month.

How have you verified the installation was successful? Can you get a version through command line? Can you start and stop the service? I don't know if Vista supports the same windowing hotkeys as XP, but have you tried typing Alt + Space to bring up the window's system menu in case it can be maximized, or typing F11 to enter Full Screen mode (not sure if that even exists on Vista)?

I know these are lame answers. I can't offer much help because I almost always configure MySQL through the command line.

I've been having a lot of trouble with this and I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me...It's driving me crazy! Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

We're using Windows 2000 Server in Terminal Server/Application Server mode. the Clients are Win98 boxes. Every so often, (once or so every 2 to 3 months) all of a sudden, All the Printers will disappear and a reboot seems to be the only way to get them back. I've tried restarting the Spooler with no effect. I've gone to Microsoft's site and been unable to find anything on the topic.

Last time this happened my System Log was full (could this cause that?). The last entry was:

I've installed MySQL onto Windows Vista home with no problems. However, when I go to configure an instance using the wizard, I get this odd error I've never seen before: "This application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application even log for more detail."

The event viewer shows the following:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\MySQLInstanceConfig.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.0\bin\MySQLInstanceConfig.exe" on line 6. The value "asAdministrator" of attribute "level" in element "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1^requestedPrivileges" is invalid.

I've tried running the file as administrator (right click for that option) and that was of no use either.

I have no darn clue what is going on at this point and searching across the internet has not produced any better luck either. Please help!

Hi ppl!

I have a pretty specific problem. I'm a total newbie on databases, so I hope one of you can help!

I'm upgrading an application on a corporate server which use a SQL database. They already have SQL Server 2005 installed on the host for other purposes, but at the time of the original install the app I'm upgrading only supported SQL Express, so they had to install it on the same host and create a new database.

The new upgrade supports the full-blown server, and the wish is to move the database from the Express instance to the server.

As I said, the two SQL installations reside on the same host, and updating the app with the new database details should be easy. So I guess I'm wondering if there is an easy way to merge or import the "old" Express instance or preferrably only the database I need.

Their db-guy is out of town, and I really have to get this upgrade done halp!

They use Management Studio to manage both instances.

thanks in advance guys!

A:Moving SQL Server 2005 Express database to SQL Server 2005

Hey there, welcome to TSG

Are you trying to port the database or the server configuration? If it's just the database, you should be able to create a dump of it and import it into the new server. I don't know how to do that with SQL Server, but you could probably Google "SQL Server 2005 database dump" and find some relevant material. If it's the server config, is there an .INI or .CONF file you can copy over?

I guess I'm not being much help because I have no experience with SQL Server, but in general a database port should be simple enough as long as both engines support the same data types. There should be very little push-up to get from 2005 Server Express to 2005 Server Enterprise.

Here seems to be a pertinent link to a Google Answers thread:

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=781934Is there help documentation for Management Studio? I'm sure there is a built-in utility to handle imports and exports.

This question is not at all about proxy configuration. It is about proxy authentication. In my college, we use the campus LAN network, where the first thing which opens after opening the browser (which should actually open) is ironport authentication from
the proxy server where I have to enter my user id and password.
The problem is that Internet explorer tries to connect to the proxy server after some redirections but doesn't prompt for authentication, leading to error. I have to start firefox for the same as it gives no problem, still want to use IE 11.
The page which should open is some https connection to ironport but rather asks to fix connection errors.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

Can e-mails be sent through a SMTP server by enforcing the authentication off for the sender's accounts? If yes, then how to do it and what all settings need to be done on the SMTP server?

A:SMTP server - Authentication off!

I would say the biggest question is what type of mail server are you running? As for the clients connecting to the SMTP server they have to use any client that supports SMTP Auth and they configure it under their connection settings (which most do).

Hi all,

Since 1 month ago im trying to setup, to configure, to understand authentication mode in SMTP IIS 6.0, with Windows 2003 Server.

I have done many test with SMTP but its impossible to me, found a solution.

I will try, with Google's Language Tool , to explain my situation. I have 2 servers. Server1 work as a Webserver and i need that this server send mail to web users. Server1 can't use local SMTP server. Server2 have a SMTP service and work well. Server1 and Server2 have a same ip range. Server2 use a SMTP service of IIS 6.0, not a Exchange server.

Objective: Server1 connected to SMTP of Server2 with Authentication mode to avoid SPAMMERS. The Server1 works with PHP but i do the test with ASP code. I think the most exactly scenario described is this:

Scenario 1: External user tries to send an email to(E-Mail address blocked: See forum rules). The email arrives at your server. If Anonymous access is not checked, then obviously the email bounces, because there was no authentication process undertaken. However, with it checked, the session establishes and yourdomain.com is checked against your domain name. If it matches, the email is accepted (it does not require relaying!). HOWEVER, if the email is to(E-Mail address blocked: See forum rules), then your server DOES NOT accept the email because it NEEDS TO BE RELAYED to NOTyourdomain.com

Hi All,
I will be deploying ATA 1.6 in our dev environment in the coming weeka and just needing a bit of help clearing up some detail with the "how-to" aspect of certificate generation. The environment I will be installing into is AD based with it's own
CA, so I won't be looking to use the self signed certs (unless someone can give me a good reason otherwise) and am wanting to get the certs provisioned from our own internal CA.
1. IIS certificate is easy, no problems here as I've done quite a few.
2. The Server Authentication template does not seem to be enabled within our environment, so I cannot use the Advanced Certificate Request form from the web portal as I can for the IIS CSR. I looked at generating a Server Authentication Certificate from
the certificates MMC, however I am getting lost under the Certificate Enrollement Policy page as policies configured by my administrator do not include a Server Authentication type.
I am getting the feeling I am going to need to either (a) get the Server Authentication template enabled or (b) generate a certificate template to facilitate this request. In either case I will need detail on what exactly is needed and why to get anything
like this approved. Can anyone help with more detailed/specific instructions on what needs to be done to generate the certificate here?
I guess the other option would be to use our internal CA for the IIS cert (trusted by all in the domain) and then use self signed for the ATA Center... Read more

What do you mean by "alone file"?

And right click on a .mds file , Properties, General, and next to "type of file" click on CHANGE.

And then scroll to the desired program you want to associate the file with and then that program will open those files.

What is the bad reason behind SQL server corruption and how can I resolve it after MDF files corruption.? i want read about more information about this SQL sever corruption and how to fix errors and recover MDF files.

A:Bad reason of SQL server database corruption and how can fix...

There are many reasons that will cause SQL Server database corruptions, including: 1. Hardware failure, such as disk failure, power interruption, etc.2. Software problems, such as defections in SQL Server itself, malware, virus, etc.3. Human misoperations. When SQL Server corruptions occurs, then the possible solutions are based on the situation: 1. If the corruption is not severe, then you can use the SQL Server build-in command DBCC CheckDB to correct the errors. See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms176064.aspx 2. If the corruption is severe, then you may try some third party tools such as DataNumen SQL Recovery to scan and recover the data from your corrupted MDF and NDF database files. Good luck!

Around 150 people use this application and the data stored are usually text, ms office documents, pdf files and images. Suppose that about 50 people are using the system at any given time, what do you think will need better hardware specs, the database server or the web/application server?

Could you give any recommendations for the hardware specs? Like cpu, ram? A friend of mine suggested that it would be good to use the nVidia Tesla GPU for parallel processing. Is this a good idea or is this going a bit overboard?

Make sure all admin passwords to the database are complex and long.

A lot of the burden for security rests with those applications that access the database. If the applications are buggy, then you won't have a secure database.

All users have to have a username to log on to their computer in the first place, All computers also have to be linked to your server, and then what ever computer they are on, Microsoft Outlook configured to their name, Best if you ask your IT Guy/Girl to sort it. Go get your IT Person and watch and learn.

Below the basics for configuring Microsoft Outlook I am not putting anything further in here

When opening for first time (Microsoft Outlook) Click on –
Mail
Setup Email
Add Email Account
Next
Microsoft Exchange Server
Next
Untick first option
Type in – (usually Svr (number). (server name.local) or combinations of this your IT person should know what it is
Enter Name
Click – Check Name
Next
Then Yes (for Different)
Finish
Close

Open Microsoft Outlook

Email Accounts
Dot – change
Next
Change to mail box
Finish
Ok then close email

Let me start by saying that I'm a low level tech trying to solve a higher level problem, so what may be obvious to some people is likely unknown to me.

We had an access 97 database on a shared folder on a workstation at one of our remote facilities. Recently we put a Windows Server 2003 machine over there to, you guessed it, be a server. The share and all the files were moved off of the workstation and onto the server.

The only real change that I noticed is that when they open any of the files on that drive, it now comes up with an Open or Cancel dialogue box. This is no problem, just an extra step. The problem comes when someone is inside a particular database. If one person has the file open, Windows will not allow a second person to open the file. If they try, it just sits there, they don't even receive the Open or Cancel dialogue box until the person with the file open closes it.

EDIT: I should point out that the permissions seem, to me anyway, to be the same as they used to be.

Any ideas?

- Pat

A:Issue with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2: Database restore

First, investigate the technique being used: A binary image restore of the files OR just a plain SQL REPLACE. The binary restore is not the default, so I am afraid you're into the slow route.
Make sure you are not doing record at a time and are using the batch mode

If there's 1000's of records, ditch the indices:

DELETE all secondary indicies from every table (keep the definitions obviously)
Then RESTORE - - the base tables will fill much faster.

When done, update the schemas to add back the indices, and you can then write
SQL recreate the index data from the base tables.

I ran SFC/scannow and nice and easy i got back into the main account.

Now i am back in the main account i cannot Network - i Have a cable from office PC to a shop till which is also on XP:
The Internet is via a wireless dongle through Office PC
Network Bridge carries Internet to Till
Connection to till mainly carries database from SQL Server and associated back office software and translates it onto the Till structure via connection software
As it stands i cannot connect through the Local area connection from Office to till - and the IP Address will not renew (in the IP Protocol  the automatically assign buttons are checked) Ipconfig release / renew times out

THE SQL Sever 2005 Management studio express when loading just says Package 'Microsoft SQL management studio package' failed to load Click OK and it says the same thing with a red cross, click OK again and it closes.

At the same time as this SQL wont load, the software we use as back office, which used the SQL database cant load as it can... Read more

That error usually relates to a driver or RAM issue.
Have you connected any new hardware recently?
If so, uninstall and reinstall that to see if that solves it.
If not, do a RAM check with memtest. You can download memtest from http://www.memtest.org/#downiso.
I have recently had this error on a computer and it turned out to be a faulty stick of RAM.

OK the problem we are having is we have this really old accounting software. We were running all Windows 98 machines before upgrading to XP last week. The way the software works is that it is installed individually on each computer but it points to a mapped network drive on another XP pro "file server" to get the database information such as customer list, etc. On the "file server" the program opens, closes, switches users, etc fast. On the 98 machines it worked fast as well. The problem is that right now the other workstations are extremely slow when opening the software, closing the software, and switching company names (we have two company profiles on this software). Once you are in the software it is fine. Any idea what may be causing this and how to fix it?

Here are the basic specs:

XP Pro machines
File server has an AMD X2 Processor, 1 GB memory, XP Pro, 80 GB Hard drive
Workstations have AMD processor, 512 mb, 80 gb hard drive, xp pro
All are set to automatically obtain IPs from the router.

Let me know if you have any other questions about our setup and if you have any suggestions. Thanks alot guys.

An update for you. We put back in the old 98 server and left the other 5 XP workstations and it worked fine. What is wrong with XP?

Database Server CPU Comparison: Athlon MP vs. Hyper Threading Xeon

If you wanted to find out what the fastest desktop CPU is, it would just take a few clicks and you would have 10 reviews at your disposal. If you're trying to put together a workstation system, you'll have a bit less to go off of but there is still more than enough information available to help make your decision. But when it comes to servers, the information flow is severely reduced.

Generally speaking, you'll find reviews of individual servers from Dell and HP but you won't find the type of component level comparisons we're used to seeing in the desktop and workstation sectors.

There are a number of reasons for this. First of all, it's very difficult to test the performance of CPUs and platforms in a server environment without actually setting up such an environment. Especially as you get into the 4-way and beyond realms, it becomes very difficult to stress those systems. There are industry standard benchmarks that can be used but again, they are very costly to run and require a great deal of setup. In the desktop and workstation worlds, you simply load up the application you wish to measure performance under and find a benchmark to help you gauge... Read more

I created an application in Access 2007 with a form and database. I have to make it a client server type app now. I need to put just the database and report files on the server for 2 users to use. Each will have the form portion of the app. The app will now have to connect to the Access 2007 database on the server. I need to know the best approach to connecting to the database this way and how to use record locking. Originally I could just use CurrentDB on the form as it was integrated with the database. But to connect to the database on the server I tried using a connection object and creating a recordset that way. But I don't seem to be able to lock the record ussing existing things like the recordset locktype property or setting the Recordlocks property on the form.

Please help me figure out the best method, of the various ones, to connect to the database on the server, as in ADODB, DAO, database object or whatever, and how to use record locking so the 2 users cannot have the same record open at the same time.

Thank you!

Valhalla

Their original SQL Server was 2008, with SP unknown, but installed on D: and C: drives. The power spike corrupted their O/S on the C: drive and someone reinstalled both the O/S and the SQL Server, which is now SQL 2008, SP4. They have intact files for all system databases, both .mdb and .ldf. Is there some way they can reconnect with the user databases using the intact copies of the previous system databases?

I have heard that if the SQL Server is stopped, previous Master and Msdb .mdb and .ldf files moved into place and the server restarted, that any previous user database .mdb and .ldf files can be accessed by the SQL server.
Is this the case, or are there details missing?

Hello,

I am randomly getting following error on my VMware based virtual Windows 7 desktops (VDI) when logging in via a domain account

"The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship"

Checked Domain Controller Logs found authentication failure event for that machine, screenshot is attached

I then checked attributes of that AD computer account and found that one of the
Service Principal Name was missing:

Host/abc.domain.org

Found following entries were present
Host/***
RestrictedKrbHost/abc
RestrictedKrbHost/abc.domain.org
TERMSRV/abc

Now, I know the fix to this issue but my concern is to find out the root cause
to prevent this error from happening as users are now getting irritated.
Please help.

We are on a windows server 2008 domain with windows 7 professional pcs.  Two months ago we started receiving this error on all pcs.  The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship.
We have narrowed it down to being a windows update issue and several updates if installed cause the issue to happen.  KB3146706, KB3149090, KB3153171, KB3161561, KB3147071, KB3156417.  If even one of these updates is installed we cannot change

Good Morning.
I`ve joined a computer to a domain and when I try loggin on it gives me the message: "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship".
I've tried making the following:
- Deleting the computer from my domain, deleting the object from AD and joining it again.
- Steps explained in these links:

And also used netdom and nltest to reset the trust relationship but nothing seemed to work.
Does anybody have any clue?
