Use Advanced System Diagnostics/Performance Reports for troubleshooting

Q: Use Advanced System Diagnostics/Performance Reports for troubleshooting

The Reliability and Performance Monitor found in Vista keeps a heap of data sets for response times, processes, configuration data, diagnostics, debug logs, registry keys and performance counters. This tool will help you diagnose windows errors, slow performance or anything else you would like it to help you track down.

1. Open the Start-Menu and search for Performance Monitor.
2. In the performance monitor there is a folder called "Data Collector Sets" found in the left open it and click "System"
3. Here you will find some default diagnostic tools to run on your vista machine, just right-click the name and click start, scroll down to the Reports folder to view your results.

You can also add your own customised monitors under the Data Collector sets folder for a more complete view of the systems performance handling, Just remember too many sets might slow your system down and vista allready runs a Reliability Monitor every hour.

This tool will point anyone in the right direction to solve issues they are having with vista or the hardware, Include the report in a support request and it can help diagnose the problem very quickly. Its proberly the most usefull feature found in vista.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First time poster. I'm an intermediate user who hasn't had many problems. I'm on an HP Pavilion dv6500 with Vista Home Premium w/Service Pack 1. For system maintenance I've loaded CrapCleaner, AVG free Anti-Virus vs. 8.5.325, AusLogics Disk and Registry Defraggers, and Advanced System Care vs. 3.3.1. I use all on a regular basis.

For the first time my ASC Security Analyzer just gave me a Hijack Analysis Report which I assume means it detects a potential threat. Reading through various forums I then downloaded and quick scanned with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It detected nothing. My AVG also detected nothing, so now I'm confused and don't know what/if there should be a next step. Below is the Hijack Log, and any help would be really appreciated (and p.s. please let me know if there's other protections/utilities that I should be using):

Hello,

I don't know what i am doing wrong, or if my VGA is faulty, but i am getting below average results from most tests i perform.

For instance, Oblivion (a 2008 game that ran fine in my GTX 295 with HD Mods) is struggling to run. Maybe struggling is an exaggeration, but its running at 30 - 40 FPS and stuttering a lot.

And thats not all, vanilla skyrim with the high resolution textures seems to be running at 60 fps but there are all sorts of frame skipping on some areas.
Is there any way i can troubleshoot whats wrong or what settings are off so my VGA can perform as well as it should ( like in the benchmarks? )

Thanks,
Alex

A:Troubleshooting poor system performance

Fixed the problem.
Turns out the latest nVidia drivers have updated the vsync functionality to integrate not only in OpenGL but also in D3D. Also they updated vsync to work that if your computer can't hold 60 FPS steady, it will drop to a 30 cap vsync. My skyrim was always in between 55 so it kept switching between those two.

As for oblivion, i believe that uhh i have no idea. Its fixed, so i dont even care!
Maybe because its old it doesnt support the new vsync very well? no clue.

Good day.

I'm having problems changing the Advanced system settings to all the users on my PC. How can i enforce a certain System setting to all User Accounts without having to log them on one by one?

And another one is how can transfer Personal User Directories to another Drive without removing the access permissions in them. (Example: C:\Users\Computer to D:\Users\Computer) Cause when i changed the user directory to D:/. That certain user directory can now be accessed by all Standard user accounts in my PC.

Any help?

Regards,

A:Advanced System Settings Performance to all User accounts

First, what system settings are you trying to change for all users? Different settings have different locations for their values and ways of making them work for all users isn't always set to one way.

Secondly, for your file copy question you'll want to look at xcopy. xcopy has some advanced features that cover almost anything that anyone would need. In regards to your specific need you'll want to look at the K, O, and X flags in the xcopy switch list. The /K flag copies attributes over, /O is the main flag you will probably want because it copies ownership and permissions, and then the /X flag copies any audit settings if you have those set and want those copied too.

So it'd be something like: xcopy C:\Users\Jon\Desktop\file.cmd D:\Users\Jon\Documents /K /O /X

I am curious about the Windows Error Reporting under the Software category in System Information from the control panel Performance Information & Tools Advanced System Information.

I see quite a few errors, which I don't recall seeing in exhaustive searches through all the Event Logs. But no idea if these are pertinent or useful, or how to save or print this report, etc. I have not found anything useful on online about this particular error reporting.

Note that my even finding this info is due to my having many system crashes BlackSOD, new GraySOD, etc. for weeks now, with no useful errors in the Event Log, no diagnostics report significant errors (only driver performance delays from standby mode, which I don't even notice). I am resisting a reinstall of Windows 7 until I get another hard drive, and still hoping to find a simple manageable cause for my problems.

A:Help with performance information and tools - Advanced System Info

Have you tried a basic registry cleaner like CCLeaner? Bad drivers can very hard to find - I've never had much luck with Windows error reporting myself. The time it takes to sleuth it and fix it, is less than the time it takes to restore or reinstall.

I'm looking for a decent General Windows Troubleshooting/Diagnostics Software Suite...

... but none of that garbage registry cleaner... system optimizer... PC tune-up CRAP.

I'm not looking for miracle software, but just a decent reliable software suite with legitimate FUNCTIONAL utilities for diagnostic and troubleshooting of windows systems and minor hardware diagnostics (disk checks, memory test)... no "Optimization" functions *eyeroll* necessary ... besides minor correction/fix commands for small errors...

I can repair most errors and navigate the registry on my own.. I'm just looking for (I hesitate to say it) a 'shortcut' in the diagnosis process for other users for whom I do routine maintenance.

I've heard Sandra 2013 is decent, but can anyone else think of any other, possibly better or equally useful software suites?

Greetings MrWalnuts and welcome to EightForums,

You could try System Information for Windows. It looks like it's freeware if you scroll down a little in the download section. l can't tell you if it's better than Sandra though, just that it's an alternative.

You can also try Hiren's BootCD and load it up with a bunch of diagnostic tools. But I get the feeling that Hiren's isn't what you're looking for.

Ok, I will try to make a long story short. I've had issues with BSOD off and on for sometime now. They don't happen at any particular time and mostly occur in the middle of the night. They occur about every 3 to 4 months. I used Bluescreenview to look at the dump files. The driver it pointed to was ntoskernl.exe and the bug string mentioned in four different cases was reference_by_pointer, driver_irql_not_less_or_equal, memory_management and bad_pool_header. The other drive mentioned in one of the other dump files was fltmgr.sys with the bug check string of bad_pool_header.

Everything I could find on the web pointed to bad memory or bad mobo. I ran Windows Memory Diagnotcs Tool under the advanced setting. It took 9 hours to run and it failed. I took out all sticks of ram and put them in one at a time and ran the diagnostic tool with standard setting. That only took about 20 minutes each to run and all sticks of ram passed. I then put all sticks back in and ran it with the standard setting and all sticks passed again. I then took out one stick and left two sticks in and ran the test with the advanced setting and it failed. I'm now down to running one stick at a time with the advanced setting. The problem is it takes 9 hours to run on the advanced setting.

My question is do I conclude that if all sticks of ram put in one at a time fails that all my ram is bad or does that mean my mobo is bad? I plan to take a stick of ram from a machine that seems to work ok and... Read more

I recently purchased an Open Box monitor, ASUS VW246, off of Newegg. It seemed to work fine from the intial start up, but after working for a few hours online (nothing graphics intensive) it went randomly went black. The power light was still blue as if it still had signal. Tried turning monitor on and off, also removing the power cable for a minute. Once it restarts it will flash the input (VGA) and show the home screen for literally a second then fall black again. Occasionally i can "catch" it by pressing the menu button. Yet, upon computer and monitor restart it will work again for a matter of time, sometimes hours. After blacking out, the monitor will respond to stand-by modes showing an amber light, but once woken, flash input screen and fall black again. No bent pins on VGA cable. My display drivers are up to date as with Direct X. I still have plenty of time for the 30-day return policy. At this point i've done what i know, but i want to be sure it's defected before i send it back. This was my first LCD anyhing, coming from a 17' CRT, it's beautiful and i'd rather not part with it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Issue
Random Request timeouts that happen enough to affect my connection. This started several days ago and locks up webpages and game sessions, often kicking me from a game if there are enough timeouts in a row.

Hardware/ISP
- Comcast Blast (75+mb download)
- Netgear C7000-100NAS (Nighthawk)
- Hardwired at 85-95mb DL/12-15mb UL
- Wireless 80-90mb DL /10-2mb UL

Troubleshooting
- 3-5% packet loss, regardless of the time of day
- Happens with the leased Comcast Modem/Router as well as my newly replaced Netgear Nighthawk
- Pings, trace routes, ping paths have been completed, but they're only as consistent as my timeouts
- First call to Comcast yielded a low signal, so they corrected this (verified on later calls that this was not a continuing issue)
- Comcast guy came out today and could not find an issue from my PC to the router, Router to coax, coax to drop connection. He replaced the drop cable out of courtesy.
- Flushed DNS, released/refreshed IP, disabled IPv6

I am happy to provide any logs you may need and I am sure I forgot a few things, so feel free to ask. The only thing left I can think is possibly too many connections on the node, but not sure if this is accurate as I have this issue at any point in the day (regardless of peak hours).

A:Request Timeouts (advanced troubleshooting completed)

If drop is replaced and still have issues, it may be faulty wiring from the access point on house to the outlet. Could be bad connector in the outlet.

Did he check the connections at the tap and verify the integrity of the taps' ports?

Hello everyone,

I just checked Event Viewer and for me it shows me a lot of warnings.
Each warning contains:

The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : Video memory resources are over-utilized and there is thrashing happening as a result. Reducing number of running programs and open windows may help resolve this condition.

My videocard is OC'ed quite a lot. Could that be the cause?
I got a (old I know) GTS450 running at 968/1936/2075

Under what circumstances is Event 100 in the Diagnostics-Performance log categorized as a Critical, Error, Warning, Information event, or not recorded at all?
Event 100 is associated with Boot Performance Monitoring; among the parameters it records are Boot Duration and whether Boot Duration represents degradation.  I have seen Critical, Error, and Warning instances of Event 100, and I have noticed
that is not recorded at all on some boots, but I have not seen any Information instances.  Additionally, I haven't detected any correlation between the level of the event and whether IsDegradation is true or false.
It would be helpful to understand more about the logic of this event.
The following thread from August 2009 touches on this, but got only one response, and ihas not been answered http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproperf/thread/13738c6f-d093-4769-bf2e-3a938f46c832

A:Diagnostics-Performance log Event 100 - Critical, Error, or Warning - when and why?

These events are defined in Windows Source code

PostBootMinorThreshold_Sec(30)     // The time in seconds for postboot must exceed to consider minor issue.
PostBootMajorThreshold_Sec(60)   // The time in seconds for postboot must exceed to consider Serious issue.
BootMinorThreshold_Sec(60)         // The time in seconds excluding postboot must exceed to consider minor issue.
BootMajorThreshold_Sec(120)        // The time in seconds excluding postboot must exceed to consider Serious issue.
At the highest level, there are two separate scenarios for boot, the kernel scenario and the user scenario. Depending on the Scenario (long or short delay) the timer is started. There is a Kernel Timer and a a timer that is triggered for User. We'll start
the Post boot timer when the Winlogon process launches the User's shell.
Troubleshoot function calls BootScenario::PerformTroubleshooting.  This then performs calculations and then logs the event by calling OutputSqmEventLog.  OutputSqmEventLog calls EventWriteEx/EventWriteBatchEx to write the events.
This will internally check the BSS trigger for the event.
The Critical Events are logged when we cross beyond BootMajorThreshold_sec
We basically calculate two options for the level we’ll attach to event 100, an option based on what is logged as MainPathBootTime (i.e. BootTime – PostBootTime), and an... Read more

Hi there,
My friend has a W7Pro SP1 64-bit Inspiron 620 Intel i3-2100 3.1Ghz 6Gig RAM. He's having quite a bit of problems with this thing, and has asked me to try and fix it. I should mention that he is a photographer, and uses external HDDs which he moves back and forth from his MAC to his W7 machine, and I suspect this is a big part of the problem.

I ran sfc /scannow, and all it found was the GWX telemetry error and this other one:

2015-07-09 09:15:49, Info CSI 0000037f [SR] This component was referenced by [l:162{81}]"Package_250_for_KB3068708~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.3068708-814_neutral_GDR"

The two external HDDs are formatted, one as FAT32 and one as exFAT32. One of the issues he is having is that, when he plugs the HDD back into the W7 machine, the photo thumbnails are duplicated, but in B&W. He is not able to cut a disk using the OS copy/burn function, or the installed Roxio Creator Starter, but IMGBurn does work. I also was unable to burn a Macrium recovery disk for him through the Reflect program (it just hung at 14% forever) - I had to make an ISO on the desktop and then burn it using IMGBurn.

The system is pretty slow, in my opinion it should be much faster than it is. I would like some guidance as to what I should do first, and if anyone has any experience with swapping HDDs from MACs to W7 and back - I really think this has something to do with it, but I just don't know for sure - I am not a MAC person.

A:Poor overall performance-advice for troubleshooting?

First, I would find his product key for Windows 7 so if something untoward happens, at least you have that! Download Belarc Advisor from here: Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more. and run it on his system. It will tell you a lot of stuff, but best of all, it will give you a large number of his product keys; not all of them, but it will definitely show Windows 7's key and any MS Office keys.

If you're not familiar with Belarc, you will be amazed at the information the free program will give you; there's also a paid version that will give you even more info.

Secondly, if he has room on his externals, I would create a folder on one of the hard drives and move everything from the other one into that. Then, I would format the now empty hard drive to pristine condition, using NTFS unless he has a valid reason for using Fat 32. Now, I would move the folder containing the original files back to the newly formatted hard drive.

Repeat the process with the other external drive.

Once you have that done, I would suggest using one for his Mac and one for his PC. Yes, that will mean a duplication of photos, but I would think that's better than what he's contending with now.

You didn't say if the PC is a desktop or laptop, but from the problems described, his DVD drive could be partially on the blink. If it's a desktop, a new DVD drive can be had from Newegg for around $20.00.

Hope this helps.

Hello HP Community, So I am currently in posession of a HP Envy product number M1W01UA#ABL; it has Intel-core i7-5500 CPU at 2.4GHz, 16 GB of RAM, Intel HD Graphics 5500 (integrated), and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M graphics card. I'm here because when I'm playing a certain game, I seem to be having performance issues even on the lowest setings well below the optimal graphics settings; stuttering, FPS loss, freezing occassionally, and I don't understand why. Now I know immediately the issue of overheating will come up, but I have a cooling pad that I use and my CPU averages the temperature at about 57C, it never really goes higher then 60C. What I assume is happening is that either the processor can't handle all that is going on within the game (though I would be very surprised if that is the case, and frankly a little dissapointed, given I have a friend with a less powerful HP Envy who doesn't seem to have any issues), that the CPU is limiting it's performance due to heat, or that there are background OS processes being a bother and sucking up my resources (not entirely evident in the Task Manager). I would appreciate any help and advice you could offer.  Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, I will relocate it if that is the case.

I apologize in advance if this is longer than needed. Long question short, what can I do to improve my system performance or what am I doing wrong to improve it?

Before I continue, I?ve read the ?Speed Up the Performance of Vista? thread numerous times with no real success. My laptop isn?t extremely slow, it tends to be a little sluggish when scrolling on web pages [Mozilla and IE(have tried both 32 and 64bit editions of IE)], when scrolling in my music in iTunes (especially in Cover Flow), or when the system is left on for a day or two. I started with a clean install to avoid problems and to update all drivers necessary. On the Cover Flow, I have a friend with a latop with half the power of mine and it scrolls through the Cover Flow flawlessly (he has Home Premium 32bit).

Throughout the forum threads on this issue I see a lot that Vista simply takes time to update everything necessary. I?ve been running on it for about 4 months now. All drivers up to date, all Windows updates downloaded and installed as soon as they come out, and the system in protected with anti virus software. Here come the inquiries. 1) Can that be a problem? Laptops are not speed demons. Try a cooling pad. Most laptops will slow when they get to a certain tempature. Overclocking a laptop could cause you to overheat and slow down. Many of the chips have thermal controls. I would switch to a desktop.

I was reading the speed up boot time performance tutorial (by a now banned member, no less) and saw that it had an option to improve disk speed by enabling advanced performance for the disk. Is it wise to do this on an installed hard drive? I noticed the optimize disk option was already enabled on my C drive and was wondering if it would be a good idea to enable the advance performance option as well.

I just don't want to lose information if I am forced to, say, hard boot the system when if it freezes up.

A:Advanced Disk Performance

I had the same question along with a couple of more on that tutorial. It was long on the "what to do's" but short on the why's. Like why do you click the No GUI Boot? Why do you need to run THREE downloaded programs? Isn't there one that does what all three do? Or why was he banned lol?

How do I remove it?

Should I adjust for best performance of:
Programs or system cache?

If I have 1g of ram how much ram what should I set the total paging file size for all drives? (I have 600MB set now, is that too much)

What is the total paging file for all drives and what is system cache?
BTW I am interested in gaming so I set for best performance of programs, but I think that may be causing me to crash while in some games... although its prob unlikely.

A:Question about Advanced Performance Options

I adjust for best performance of programs on both
the paging file should be set to 1 1/2 times the amount of ram, so paging file for 1g should be set to 1536mb

My SONY Vaio VGNFW495J Laptop runnign Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit has an Intel Core Duo CPU P8700. I use my Laptop primarily for (many) multiple browsing sessions; and some times for Music and various MS office tools (but not really for graphic-intensive apps like games).

Considering this information, can anyone give me any guidelines as to what Boot configuration will give me better performance: telling the system I have/use 2 processors (thru the System Configuration / Boot / Advanced Options / Number of Processors ==> setting to "2" - OR - should I use "1"?

I don't have any idea at this point what it means for Windows to use one or the other settings. On the surface, it'd seem that one should tell it to use 2 if indeed there are two processors in the machine; but I haven't seen any "noticeable" difference so far when using one setting over the other (although I haven't been doing any kind of performance measuring, so I don't really "know").

A:What is better performance: Boot / Advanced Options / # of Processors =2 - OR - 1?

Two (2) would be the proper setting.

I have seen this issue before in Windows 7 but this is happening on one of my Windows 10 computers. I want to have my settings set to Adjust for best appearance but when I restart the computer, it'll be set to custom but all of my settings will still have a check mark in the check boxes but not all of them will take affect until I change it back to adjust for best performance which I think is only a couple of options not taking affect. Is there a way I can fix this.

A:Advanced Performance settings saves until restart

Are you logged into the administrating account of your computer? Just sounds like you're a non-admin and it's only temporary until the computer restarts.

Hello,   I have an Envy 15t laptop, and the original battery seems to not be functioning properly (the initial charge is quite low and the laptop does not last a long time).  I bought a new battery to remedy this issue, and I was hoping to do a calibration test.  While doing this, I ran into a strange problem.   For some reason, when I try to access the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (by pressing ESC on bootup, followed by F2), it looks different now than it did before (I don't think it's because of the new battery before though, since I still had the old menu even with the new battery at some point).  The old menu used to be more of a GUI style, something like Figure 9 in the following link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259 Now though, under HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, it doesn't look like a GUI (it's more text based), and I only have the following options: Memory Test, Hard Drive Check, Language, Exit.  I no longer see a "Components" option, and I certainly cannot access the Battery option from within Components (since the Components option is missing).  Any ideas about why this is the case?  Thank you.

Hi rjordan393 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Either that the LSC is not ok or it has encountered issue during the test that was not able to verify.
Try to uninstall it from programs and features under control panel and download a fresh updated copy from the support site and see if that would work.

Likewise for differential comparison you can also use similar test software such as this and this .
Update us how things go.

Is there a diagnostic program that can tell me what is going on inside my notebook? I am used to the one that came with my MSI machine that tells you CPU/GPU temp, fan revs etc. I suspect fan in this notebook is not working or is it not fitted with a fan? Also is anyone aware if win10 update can be turned off. I have totally had it well and truly that every update totally trashes the machine each and every time the download installs. I am sick of losing my 3rd party software and my data. This laptop will go into orbit on the end of my boot if it doesn't stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no control over when it decides to update and I can be right in the middle of things and down it goes never to restart again until factory reset.

I bought this because MSI like to play funny buggers with that machine. It has now gone back for 3 warranty repairs and now is back there again as they damaged it last time they had it and who knows when I'll see that machine again!

I just want something that minimizes system process's and keeps the computer running at the best performance possible. Whether by cleaning out the computer periodically or stopping certain services.

I also want to see if there is any diagnostics programs out there for hard drive, memory, and any other hardware/software i would to diagnose in the future!

For memory i use MemTest currently and I have nothing else for all other hardware/software diagnostics.

Hello. I would like to make an inquiry concerning system diagnostics for my computer system. I run a Windows 10 Home (Ver. 1703, OS Build 15063.483) on a ThinkPad T450s (under a 4-year warranty that'll expire on July 20 2019). I have recently run a System Diagnostics for my system and found issues regarding two storage tests (the tests being for Targeted Read Test & SMART Short Shelf Test for Storage 'device' WDC WD10JPVX-08JC3T5 - 931.51 GBs; the report is attached for reference). I was wondering if I should be concerned over those failed tests. I would like to know as the end results report state that my computer is 100% functional, even though it doesn't display the one storage 'device' with the two failed tests. Any help/suggestion/advice on the case would be appreciated!

So last night I was using my laptop to watch a movie from my hot tub. I guess I managed to get a few drops of water on the keyboard when I went to change the volume because afterwords some of the keyboard buttons didn't work. I left it upside down with a paper towl on the keyboard and when I woke up the keyboard worked fine, but the computer asked if i wanted to do a diagnostic. I figured why not and ran it. It said yes. After the diagnostic though the computer turned off and it won't turn back on. I push the power button and all it did was flash 5 times and nothing happened. Any ideas.

Does all the RAM show at startup, or when you rightclick My Computer, and choose Properties?

It may mean that the stick that you have just added is failing. Can you check by pulling out the one you have just added, and then re-running the program?
