Can't save a edited imageres.dll with many programs

Q: Can't save a edited imageres.dll with many programs

I can't modify imageres.dll file (../windows/system32/)
-copied and pasted to my desktop
-full permissions
-start programs as an administrator (I tried using Axialis IconWorkshop and with Microangelo)
-I edit something (I don't want to add icons, modifying those existing already)
-Save
-error, cannot save
tried with that imageres.dll of:
windows 8 (4.36 7/26/2012 ~ 65 MB)
windows 8.1 (13.44 8/22/2013 ~ 47 MB)
(this property are of files from windows ITALIAN)
running software on windows 8 and windows 8.1 (x64)
I don't understand where there can be the problem
Thanks in advance auto

Preferred Solution: Can't save a edited imageres.dll with many programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
I have Outlook 365 on my desktop for emails , calendars and contacts
I use Icloud for Windows to sync my Calendar and Contacts from iphone to desktop or from desktop to iphone.
Was seamless until a few days ago when trying to edit a contact on Outlook it would not allow me to save it
Error message was "Your changes cannot be saved because you don't have permission to modify some or all of the items in this folder. Do you want to save a copy of the item in the default
folder for the item?
I can edit the contact on iphone and it updates though to Outlook on desktop.
Calendar appointments (new and amended/edited) are seamlessly working both ways.
A new contact inputted onto Outlook icloud contact will save but if you then try to add a new number or note then get the above error message.
Please advise

Hi,
I hope this is the correct place to ask. I have spent the day editing a document which i stupidly just opened from an email attachment in my hotmail account and proceeded to edit. I diligently saved it throughout the day but did not use the save as function.

I have tried to open a similar document and choose save as to see where the document would have saved but this does not seem to work in Windows 7. I have tried looking in my 'temp' folder but this is empty.

Does anyone know how else I could retrieve this document? It is the only version i have...i really ought to have looked after it better!

Thank you in advance,

Sandra

No problem this is an easy one.

Go to search type in back up and restore Pick a date prior to your problem. And then like magic, everything is back the way it was when life was good. This will affect all your personal documents, but not system settings.

but first try this one. Go to search pick a phrase that is in your document and it should appear.

I have Windows 7.
i copy entire flash drive to a folder (Call it "RemovableDrive" folder under My Document) from flash drive (USB).

In "RemovableDrive", folder, I right click and select Properties, then I uncheck READ ONLY, and select Apply to set all files and folder/subfolders to uncheck READ ONLY.

In the "RemovableDrive" folder, I opened a file, and edit it. Then I try to save it.
it would not let me. I also set the property of the file to READ ONLY, but still has the same problem.

What is the problem?
I have administrator privileges.

A:Copied flash to harddrive, and Cannot save edited file in folder.

What you did was to clear the Read Only attributes for this folder, sub folders and files. In FAT32 this is enough.

But in NTFS file system, you have to check the file permissions along with the ownership also for the folder.

To check the file permissions, right click on your flash folder in My Documents, select Properties - Security Tab.

Here under your username check the file permissions. Do you have full control?

Click on Advanced - Owner tab and press Edit button. Now select your username and put a check mark on Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and press OK button twice to return to the folder Properties dialog box.

Now click Advanced button, and make sure your username has full control permissions. If not click on Change Permissions and remove the tick mark on include inheritable permissions from this object's parent. Click Add button on the opened dialog box. Select your username and press Edit button. In the opened dialog box, put a check mark on Allow at full control, select Apply to this folder, sub folder and files. Keep another check mark on Apply permissons.... in the bottom of the screen and finally press OK button. Now close all the dialog boxes.

This should now allow you to edit any files in the folder.

In the System 32 folder is a imageres.dll file. If I remember correctly, and I reserve the right to be 100% wrong here, there are .bmps in the file for desktops during the boot/shutdown procedures.

Does anybody know what I am refering to here?

When I run sfc /scannow, I get the following in my log file:

I do not pretend to understand all these diagnostic messages, but to someone in the know they might indicate why sfc is not completing.

I have already replaced the "imageres.dll" with the one from the installation disk, but the problem is not going away. I do not understand why. However, since everything seems to be working OK, I don't really need to fix anything. I would like sfc to work correctly though.

If anyone knows why this is happening, I'd appreciate some tips. Thanks!

Hi,

Recently I downloaded an icon pack. Well, it turns out I didn't like it, so I tried to change my icons back to the default icons. The problem is that imageres.dll (What I assume to be the vista icons) doesn't have any icons in it anymore. SHELL32.dll is still full, but I am not running XP.

So, does anybody have a replacement imageres.dll that I could download? I googled it, but I don't trust any of the sites it turned up. If I can't install another imageres.dll is there another way to fix my problem? Thanks a lot!

A:imageres.dll contains no icons

Hi,

Two things: I have uploaded a new imageres.dll for you to replace your .dll with in case all else fails. You will probably need to take ownership of the old imageres.dll first, here is how:

Navigate to the old imageres.dll and right click on it and select Properties.Under the Security tab, click Advanced.Under the Owner tab, click Edit.Click "Other Users and Groups".Click Advanced.Click "Find Now".Scroll down and double click on Everyone.Click OK THREE times.Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).Click Add.Click Advanced.Click "Find Now".Scroll down and double click on Everyone.Click OK.Single click on Everyone and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.Click OK TWO times.
However, try this first. Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue. Type "cmd" and press enter. Go past the UAC prompt if necessary. In Command Prompt, type "sfc /scannow" and press enter. Let this scan finish (it will take about 15 minutes) See if this fixes the problem. Upload sfcdetails.txt so I can have a look at it for you. See full details here: System Files - SFC Command If this does not solve the problem, try the method above.

After one of these has repaired imageres.dll, follow METHOD 1 here: Icon Cache - Rebuild

Good luck,

Richard

EDIT: Forgot to upload the .dll, sorry! Will do so in a few minutes.

Grab a Vista disk, and pop it in the drive. Load it up, and select repair. That should replace and fix the DLL file. Make sure you take the changes out from Blinds, or remove it altogether.

Hi I am looking for an answer concerning the "save as" command causing the program to either hang up and not respond or it will litteraly shut the program down. This fisrt started happening in MS Word a few months ago and not I cannot even work with files in Photoshop 7.0.1

I am using the Nikon View 6.0 as a plug in for converting NEF files to JPEGS in PS7. I am able to open the picture file and make adjustments. But the minute I click save as and choose JPEG it will shut the entire program down like it was never open.

It is allowing me to save them as pps files and tif files but then the same thing happens again when I try to convert those files to jpeg.

Ive tried reinstalling both Nikon View and PS7 to no avail.

Anybody have an idea what is going on here?

Thanks

A:Save As - Just Shuts Programs Down

Have you tried uninstalling Nikon View all together and THEN saving as your desired format? Nikon View could possibly be conflicting and causing some sort of error. If you can, try that out and let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I'm preparing my computer for upgrading to win 7 from vista. I have shrunk my c drive & created a new partition. I loaded Norton ghost & did a backup of my program files along with pictures, videos etc. on the new partition. I plan on doing a clean install on my c drive of course wiping out all my programs etc. Now I've started "thinking"...uh oh... can I restore all those program files back on my c drive after the upgrade? Or should I somehow move all those programs over to my new partition before upgrading...in which case how do I do that? Not quite sure what to do....

A:What's the best way to save/reinstall programs?

Programs must be reinstalled as their installer writes to the registry as well as installing files in several places.

You can try an in-place Upgrade to see how the performance is, until you have time to clean install and reinstall all of your programs. Some have good luck with in-place Upgrades, although they are not considered a very clean install as they can carry over corruption from Vista.

A:Programs can't save to folder...

Hi Noekk, welcome to the Seven Forums.

By default, Seven protects system folders Windows, Program Files and in 64-bit editions also the Program Files (x86). Without built-in administrator rights, you can not save on those folders. If an installed application insists to write userdata to its own program folder instead of Username\AppData, and the application has not an option to change userdata folder, a simple workaround is to create a new folder to root of your drive and install apps there. For instance you could create a folder C:\Games, and install your game there.

Hello.
I hope I am posting in the right section, I am new here.
I am having a very annoying problem with Windows XP Home Edition SP3.
If I install Anti-Virus or a game etc. Anything that needs to be installed, after rebooting it acts like it was never installed.
What I mean is I installed Avast! Anti-virus and as with Anti-Virus I rebooted after I installed it.
But when I rebooted Avast had the red cross next to it, saying it wans't running. So I reinstalled, same problem.
It's not only Anti-Virus, it's Manycam, GTA San Andreas Multiplayer, even Google Chrome won't save my settings.

Manycam gives the "Initization error" Avast says unsecured SA:MP just asks me to reinstall.

I do not have a virus since After I installed Avast! I ran a detailed virus scan on everything, (took 2 hours) but everything came up clean.

This problem has been happening since November 2011 when for some reason my PC had the BSOD on Boot (which I fixed myself)
Also upon Boot up, it says "Finding new drivers" and then it says "Some programs may not run correctly until you reboot" but It says that every time I boot up.

Very annoying and very worrying since I want to install a new graphics card today.

Any help is very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Nathan.

EDIT2: XP also hangs when shutting down, I have to force the shutdown via the power button.

So I'm sure people have had similar posts of some tweak going into his OS system files and changing things and now screwed up their OS. Well, here's another one

I found a cool Vista theme I wanted to try out. So I followed the directions but made a mistake or two. I had to download Windows 7 Power Tool Ultimate 2.3 if that matters at all. That whole process in trying to get this vista theme I think I did correctly.

However, I had to 'Take Ownership' of imageres.dll and change the name, and then put the new imageres.dll into system 32. Well, a) the new imageres.dll wouldn't copy into it, it said it did, but the new file never popped up. But this could've been a result of..b) I restarted after thinking I was done, and when it loaded all of my UAC controls are gone. As are some icons and themes and stuff. Which isn't my main concern right now. I have no admin controls, I can't even open anything that requires that. And everything just 'error fails' and such. Can't do System Restore.

I even went to see if I could Enable or Disable UAC (which I was supposed to do in the beginning of trying to put this theme in) and the C:\ box says 'Access denied'.

Sooo.. Idk what to do. And I don't have a Vista disc to do the fix it thing.

A:UAC, imageres.dll, messed up controls..Help please

Hello Azuth, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if creating a Vista Recovery Disc to use to do a System Restore at boot using a restore point dated before this problem instead may be able to fix it for you.

Hope this helps,

Also, the hotmail attachement command Save Target As (using IE) shows an error message "Internet Explorer can not download. Interface not compatible".

If I open IE 64 and Office 2003 it will work correctly in the File Open/Save As commands...

Looks like a comdlg32.dll or the registry is corrupted / damaged...

Any experience like this? Please help...

A:32 bit programs with problems with Open/Save As

Hello,

Can you please press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue. Type cmd and press enter. Go past the UAC prompt if necessary. Type sfc /scannow noting the space and let the scan run. It will take about 15 minutes. If integrity violations are found, parse and upload the log files. See the top yellow box here on how to parse the logs files: System Files - SFC Command and then upload/paste inline if you really cannot upload sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop.

I want to format my laptop (windows vista) because it's got a lot of problems and I'm too lazy to try to fix it. I'm just wondering if I would be able to keep certain programs once I format it. Will there be any programs at all still installed or will they all be wiped out? I would like to at least have an internet browser like IE or Firefox. If possible, I'd want to keep a few other programs like Adobe programs and Microsoft Office.

A:will i be able to save certain programs when I format my laptop?

You'll have IE. Others will need to be installed.

There is this thread on a forum with alot of thumbnails of pictures. I want to download all the full size images, but there are too many to just "right click > save as"

I've tried the Firefox extension "Download-them-all" and I also have GalleryGrabber (which doesnt open the image links, just saves the images).

Is there any other program that will open all the links and save them?
Just incase you dont know what i mean about thumbnail.. I mean..

So, I'd like to dual boot XP and Vista to take advantage of DirectX10. However, I would also like to keep full XP functionality, and I might also end up adding Ubuntu to the mix (but that's not really important). I've read that the best way to do something like this is make a separate partition for each operating system and then make one larger one for storing everything. The problem I see with this is that programs tend to use the OS partition to save things such as game saves, registry data, etc. Would there be any way to get around something like this and retain access to programs between both OSes? I doubt that simply changing the installation directory would help much. Programs I'd like to run between both XP and Vista include games such as Crysis, everyday apps such as Microsoft Office and Daemon Tools, and modification apps such as RivaTuner. I also want to run things like NOD32 and WindowBlinds, which I think would have problems unless I installed them separately within each OS. Is this at all possible to do? If anyone could give me any information, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

A:Can I change where programs save data?

Most of the programs you have listed there would require specific Registry entries, so would need to be installed on each Operating system.

If you do want to install multiple Operating Systems, then partitioning will work just as well as adding a ne whard drive. Be sure to check the file structure you're using (FAT32/NTFS etc) as they are not always compatible if you want to vie wfiles from both linux and Windows.

As far as your games go, you could probably save your games on a common partition - but the option will be within the game itself, so every game will be different.

Hello everybody,

As my first posting, I'd like to say hello and thank you in advance to helping me out. I currently have an Alienware M17, way too big for my liking. I plan on switching to a new laptop, but not without selling this one to afford one I want. I will be getting a internal terabyte of memory to do a disk clone, but I am also backing up to my 1 tb external WD drive.

In essence my question is.....

"What would be THE BEST way to ensure that when I re-install everything on my new laptop, that all my programs and their keys will be on the disk? I know I can take out my current harddrive (maybe) and swap it out with the new one, but I will not have my current one, and would like to sell it with the harddrive. I have programs such as Microsoft Office, CS5 Master, SketchUp, Revit, etc.

Would it be possible to simply take everything from my current laptop, and without any modifications, place everything on my current drive, to the new laptop?

Thank you!

A:How to save programs and keys on backup?

You can do that with Macrium imaging. But you need the Pro Version which costs $59 - but sometimes they offer it for less. The function is called: " Restore to dissimilar hardware ".

Earlier today, I let my brother use my computer for a few hours...big<edit> mistake. He installed all kinds of crap including Kazza, games, and some other programs that I've never even heard of. I uninstalled everything from the Add Remove Programs list and ran an Adaware scan, but nasty programs have a tendency to hide and I'm afraid there might still be some on my computer.
It would be really helpful if someone could just give my HijackThis Analyzer results log a once over to be sure my machine is okay. I usually keep it clean as a whistle and would like to get it back to good condition.
Also, if you happen to know which programs the things that I will need to remove are associated with, please let me know so I can block them from installing.

I should tell you that I have the Cox Security Software installed (it appears in the log and anything "Curtains" is associated with that program) and I would like to keep it on my computer.

Thanks!!

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, so please forgive me if it's in the wrong place. I wasn't sure where else it fits.

Here's my issue, I've been having some major trouble with all of my programs. At first I thought it was just with my Adobe Creative suite, but then I noticed it was happening on my Office Suite. Then on firefox, IE, etc.

Every time I open up the window to save or open a file from a specific directory, the program crashes. Resetting my computer helps for a while but after a few hours, it goes back to crashing all my programs. I'm getting very desperate as I have some looming deadlines and this is really affecting my work.

I've tried 'refreshing' my system and it says my drive is locked...
I've tried restoring a backup but get an error...
I've tried formatting my system and it says a partition is missing...

Please let me know if you brilliant people need any other information.

A:All programs crash when trying to open or save

Could be a virus, but sometimes it might be the language that your system is in.

Some programs only work with english, so when saving to a directory the letters in a different language will show as "??????"

example C;\ Users\?????????\Downloads\
I've had problems where i couldn't install or save a game or file just because the name of a folder was in a seperate language than english.

This might be your problem, although I doubt it since you are from Ohio, and probably only use english.

Computer has been working like a champ for over 2 years.  I keep it clean with Windows 8 and Malwarebytes and really only use it for games here and there, internet browsing, torrents and "Netflix and chilling".  I recently installed an old game called Escape Velocity: Nova.  Old 32 bit game from back in the Macintosh days.  I also installed Heroes of the Storm.

Today I came home and Chrome has stopped working.  It's still showing installed on my computer and the icon is still there on the taskbar but when I try to load it, nothing happens.  I ran Malwarebytes to see if some malware was downloaded by mistake but nothing.  So then I tried using IE to download antivirus programs and malware cleaners from this forum but now when I try to save any file to the downloads folder I get an error message.  I have attached a screen shot (

I am writing from my laptop. My desktop (Windows XP Pro, SP3) has been so taken over by memory resident trojans that it will not allow outside communications and will not recognize my external backup drive. Malwarebytes and AVG are on the cpu and report the trojans but can't remove them. I am not able to use email, internet or download the programs you normally request like TSG SysInfo or the removal and repair software from that cpu. Is it possible to download this to my laptop and then try to load it to the desktop? Even so, it would be difficult to upload results to this forum for advice.
So, Unless someone has a good way out of this mess, I'm ready to wipe and reload Windows, but I use this cpu for art and music work including digital transfer of old family VCR videos and photos.
So I would like to try to save those programs and the data from being wiped out with the reinstallation of Windows. My last good backup was about 4 months ago, so I'd lose data as well as the supporting programs. Any suggestions?

Hi all,
When wishing to save a file into a different format using WORD or IRFANVIEW or WAVELAB or all other programs the save-as option list appears fleetingly then disappears. You can rarely fluke it and sometimes after multiple clicks it works normally but mostly the drop down menu just disappears.
This only happened after using CC cleaner and malwarebytes to remove a bad virus infection.
Also if I happen to double-click while attempting to choose a format (as the menu disappears) the computer goes into a strange feedback loop and becomes unusable till eventually it stops by itself.
Pretty weird huh?
Sure hope some brilliant person on here can help me! Windows 10 on a Toshiba Qosmio laptop.
Cheers!

Hi,

Something is preventing Icon #16, which is the default drive icon in Windows 7 from displaying in my imageres.dll.

The problems started after using various methods and software for recovering data from an external hard drive. My local hard drive icons went missing in My Computer

I took the following steps all of which have been futile:

1. rebuild icon cache
2. sfc /scannow
3. Replace the imageres.dll with the original Windows 7 one using Win7 orig. IconPack inst X64 by ~Mr-Ragnarok on deviantART

Basically even when I download an original imageres.dll from somewhere, when I see the icons in the database, Icon #16 is always missing. Also missing are many other icons such as 11, 12, 13 etc. as you can see in the screenshot.

Clearly something is immediately preventing these icons from showing even after I have replaced the file with a new one.

What could be the solution to my problem? I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and a scan does not show any Virus.

A:Icon #16 missing from imageres.dll even after replacing with new

Welcome to the Seven Forums
They're not missing Microsoft did not put them there.
The drive icon is number 32 or 35 or 36 in the imageres.dllI don't remember for sure.
You said you already did 1. rebuild icon cache 2. sfc /scannow them would've been my first two choices also and I probably would've done your third choice to but if it didn't work you made need to do a Repair Install

Hello.
I would like to change many icons via Res. Hacker in imageres.dll but i have small problem.
There is a bunch of icons in imageres.dll and i dont know for many icons for what they are so is there some list or specification for these icons?
Something like:
Icon number 1 - music folder
icon number 34 - default folder
etc
Sorry for my bad English but i hope you understand what i`m looking for

A:imageres.dll icon list/specifications

Hello Acidi, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could install the free program IconViewer to add the Icons tab to files (ex: imageres.dll) that contain icons in them. As you see in the screenshot below, you will be able to see what the icon is for each number in the file (ex: imageres.dll).

Hope this helps,
Shawn
