Windows 7 File Copy: Can't Find Skipped Files

Q: Windows 7 File Copy: Can't Find Skipped Files

Hello everyone. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 installed. I have never used 7, and upon copying files from an external drive to the C: drive I encountered an error stating that one of the folder names was too long. It gave me a couple of options, and I chose "skip." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that it just skipped the folder. I can't find it anywhere, either on the external drive where I had copied it from or on the C: where I was trying to copy it. If anyone has any idea where these files are I would greatly appreciate it, as I could not find a temporary location or anything else of that sort.

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 File Copy: Can't Find Skipped Files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try this: In search, type several unique words that would be found in the folders. Maybe the entire title or a name of a special location, etc.

Hi Techies ,

I have been looking to find a macro to help me sort out my excel file. I am new to macros so the one I am looking for has to look for a text , copy another column of that row(eg lets say E11) where text is found , find this text (E11 text) , copy another column of a row where E11 is found ( say F21 ) , find F21 and copy another coulmn of a row where F21 was found and print all these ( text , E11 , F21 etc. ) on a new sheet in a single row.

examples are all highlighted fields in the attached file.

Can someone help me with creating a macro!!! ?

I'm trying to do a backup using Windows 7 built in tool to create an Image and a Data backup. This is for a senior who I happen to know.

The external drive is brand new. The backup runs and completes but instead of giving that nice 100% and Green bar it says it skipped files. Normally I would leave this alone as I can simply see what files are skipped.

This being for someone less techy I want it to finish with no error messages.

It says it can't find two files.

Double clicking on this short cut produces two folders, New Folder and New Folder(2). Double clicking on New folder takes you down a layer to New Folder. Double clicking on New Folder, you guess it, you get New Folder. There were four embedded directories from the top all called New Folder.

I went to bottom and deleted the New Folder directory. I deleted each empty New Folder directory all the way back to the top. Then I delete "My Documents" on desktop. This did not delete any real documents found in the Documents library.

Under the New Folder(2) directory I found a real file which I moved to Documents.

Just run sfc /scannow (copy and paste that into run, or command prompt )
You will need your Windows server 2003 CD (maybe)

Also confirm all backups are complete (even though it's just a standard Windows command, sometimes installed personal firewalls and Antivirus softwares can cause issues during the scan)

I have a Windows XP user who can open PDF files on our secondary file server (e.g. \\serverB\shares\marketing\file.pdf) but not from the main server (\\serverA\shares\marketing\file.pdf). Same with copying PDF files. He can
copy them to his desktop. from server B but not from server A. Server A is the one assigned to him because server B is being pre-seeded for DFS and is in a different office anyway.

The problem is only with PDF files. He can open and copy any other files. And it's only on his Windows XP machine. His Windows 7 machine works just fine (he can copy and open PDF files from server A).

The two servers (Windows 2016) are set up identically as far as NTFS permissions. The only difference is that server A is set up in DFS while server B is being pre-seeded before being added to DFS.

DFS namespace type is: domain (Windows Server 2008 mode).

The XP machine had no problem under server A when the DFS namespace type was Server 2000 mode, but I'm not sure that would cause the problem.

I tried backing up my Windows 7 Pro yesterday and all 3 times I got a message that the backup was complete, but some files were skipped.

It was the same sub-directory each time. Funny thing is the sub-directory isn't on the PC any longer.

I'm afraid to think the backup was successful and that I can move on to my next task.

Any one have any suggestions?

A:Skipped files

Hello Bill, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I guess it may have just been a ghost folder (deleted folder that didn't go away until after a refresh or restart) since it's not actually on your computer for Windows Backup to include in the backup.

A:Backup completed but some files were skipped

Hello Joseph,

This error means that one or more folders that you selected to be included when you setup Windows Backup is no longer available to be backed up. Thus, it was skipped while backing up the others.

You can use step 4 in the tutorial below to "Change settings" in your Windows Backup to uncheck any included (checked) folders that have been deleted or moved.

Afterwards, you should stop getting this error.

im on a domain

we have a network share which i'll call H:

anyways i have a small folder on this share called backups with a few small files in it.

I opened command prompt H:> and typed:

copy .\backups c:\Desktop

the command was a success and it listed all the files that were transferred.

anyways... i thought the folder and corresponding files would appear on my Desktop but no go...

then after running a dir /A command on C: i realized at the root of C: there is a file called Desktop and not a directory.

Its gets more interesting. I ran a "my computer" search and could not find the folder name "backups" anywhere on the entire pc, or the files that were in it.

I even checked my profile \tatem\documents and settings\desktop and still... no go.

"totally stumped"

any ideas...?

i just hope it didnt append that data to the file called Desktop on c: \ root, as im assuming its there for some sort of administrative reason, condisering it has no file extention.

***update: ran this command instead H:> copy .\backups "c:\Documents and Settings\tatem\Desktop" and it worked ok...
i was just thinking it would have placed the folder on my desktop and not just the contents... still trying to figure out where the original transfer went though... (senario above)

My XP installation disks are very scratched up and I got the message "Setup cannot copy the file[...]" several times on what I recall being "CDMEDIA.HL_" and "CDMEDIA.CH_" and MAYBE one other that I can't remember (believe it was two or three files) during setup, so I skipped the files. I figured that would screw with my CD drive, and sure enough, when I got Windows running it wouldn't even recognize my CD drive. The funny thing is, my CD drive still functions as far as opening and closing and even blinking lights, so this is clearly a software problem caused by the lack of those critical system files. Knowing that, I downloaded an XP installation disc online and took the file I suspected were missing and put them into the proper directory (C:\WINDOWS\system32), but to no avail. I rebooted and the CD drive is still not working. I was reading online and tried to use the "sfc /scannow" command to scan for missing files. It said there were some missing, but I had to insert an XP disc to fix it! Talk about a catch-22.

Can anyone help? I really don't want to have to reinstall windows (and can't if this isn't fixed anyways as I'll just have the same problem). I have no access to any other copies of XP in disk form nor any writable disks to burn the existing copy I do have so yeah.

I know there are solutions for this on this forum but I can't get any of them to work in my specific situation.

I have a program that cannot deal with ZIP files and I need to manually sort them out. What I can do is export a partial location for these ZIP files to a txt files so I have:

What I want to be able to do is create a batch file that will read the location of these files and copy them to a folder. The files are located on a network share but they r are mapped in My Computer. I can modify to the txt file so it gives the full path as a UNC path or a hard path.

I've been trying to get it to work using a For In Do statement but I don't know if that's the best solution. Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It should have created a copy...I usually don't pay attention to such, but I think that's what happens.

The files are either moved, copied...or in one location or both.

They don't just disappear, unless one of your drives is defective.

Situation: I have the simple CMD(DOS) .bat below that i am using to scan networked computers for specific files that need to be overwritten. When the file is found, its path is appended to the resutls log (MS08-070_compname.txt). I am trying to figure out how to read that results log to automatically overwrite those files with the updated files.

Limits: Cannot use any third-party software, cannot use GPO, pretty much can't use much else than the DOS CLI basically. A HUGE! annoyance, trust me, I know. I am quite aware of how old the DOS CLI is and that there are much better tools out there, I just simply cannot use them due to implemented network limitations.

I've just bought a new laptop and I need to move my personal files from the old one to the new one. I've tried several methods, but they all give me problems with certain files: some files (and I have not been able to find any pattern here) will simply not copy over.

What I've done:
Move files onto an external USB drive and then copy them onto the new laptop.
Take out the old HDD and connect it to the USB port of my new laptop.

In both cases there are files that request admin permission before starting to copy, but the admin permission of my new laptop does not work for those files.

How can I get all my files on my new laptop with as little hassle as possible and without losing any files?

P.S. I did not set any special file permissions for any of the files and it looks like most of the files that won't copy over came from email or forum attachments, support downloads from hardware manufacturers etc. This has me even more puzzled since these files are supposed to be shared and should copy over without any problems...

Hi all,

To increase our backup solutions, we have decided to backup our SQL database every hour to a folder within the C drive (we couldn't get it to backup straight to a USB drive). So now we need a way (batch file best solution?) to copy these files to the USB drive, lets say every 1.05hours just after they've been created?

Maybe we could copy the entire folder every hour and delete old backups that are in this folder and to the new place for the backups. (although I guess it won't work as it'll have the same folder name once it has been copied).

Or copy the individual files to that new folder although with this they have all different names so is it possible to copy the newest file to the new folder and then after this delete the old backups from a certain time frame?

Big thanks for your help!

I want to write a batch file that do this for me:

Any Idea?

A:a simple batch file for copy files and folders

To create a directory with the date and time as the name, In a batch file use:

set DirName=%date:~-4,4%.%date:~-7,2%.%date:~0,2%.%time:~0,2%.%time:~3,2%
MD \%DirName%

Then in the same batch file use robocopy to copy files to the new directory

robocopy TEST %DirName% /e

you need to add your own paths and read the robocopy help for the right switches you need.
By default Robocopy copies only files that don't exist in the target directory but because you are creating a new directory every time it will copy every thing in TEST

You could use the /A switch which only copies files with the Archive attribute set.

I was looking for some files from different folders in a computer so I searched for it using normal windows search and the result has come around 1000 files.

Now when I try to copy all these files and paste it in an external usb, it could not copy because most of the file names are same(though in different paths). Also, I'm not able to check the total sizes of the results.

I wonder then how I can copy all these 1000 files into my usb.

My OS is win xp professional

A:[SOLVED] how to copy all search result files into an USB (even if file names are same

Hello comonforall,

One laborious way to do this would be to temporarily rename them; for instance, if the file is called "Help", rename it to "Help(1)"; then when transferred to their final location, remove the numbers and brackets.

Incidently, what files are you trying to move? If they belong to the Windows XP Operating System; then, transferring them will be useless, because they will not in another location other than the one that they were originally installed.

Post back with the file names.

Kind Regards,

I require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this;

Copy "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker" to "Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbutcher"

The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. It may be the case that the 4tonbaker folder is on;
C:\Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or
D:Genesis\Vehicles\truck\diesel\4tonbaker or even

and I require the end user to have no need to know, just for the directory to be copied and renamed when and where it is found.

If possible I then want the batch file to perform a second task. I want to distribute a folder, lets say it is 4tonbutcher and in that folder there are files lets say doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt

On any given users PC 4tonbaker has these same named files but the content is different to the ones in my folder 4tonbutcher, I want to update the newly created folder, 4tonbutcher with the new txt files I d... Read more

I purchased a refurbished computer with Windows 10 installed. I am now suspicious that it is a pirated copy.

Microsoft pages speak in geek about how to for $130 get legal. The money is not the problem it's the language where they speak of a installation that erases everything.I copied files from my old computer onto this new one and had some problem with my old one. Repeating that process would be a disaster.

Does anyone have a phone contact with Microsoft who speaks human who can explain the process. An independent computer repairman told me today that at one time they had a special office with special prices for helping people who got swindled.

Any and all help will be appreciated.

You can find instructions for "Checking activation status" here:

I don't know if the contact information on this page on the Microsoft site is still valid. The Validate Windows link was broken when I tried it.

EDIT: Is there a holographic Microsoft Certificate Of Authenticity attached to the computer for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, or 7?

I have a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 1gb as well as a Memorex 1gb flash drive and when I connect them to my computer and double click on them in the Windows Explorer pane that shows icons for the devices, I get the following error:

Windows cannot find 'copy.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

I click ok and nothing happens. I can, however, click on the devices in the tree view and access my files, as well as going File>open in any program. This is more of an annoyance than anything, as I am able to access my files in all manners EXCEPT the one area of Explorer. Can anyone give me some insight on this error?

We've got a file server here in the office on which we have a separate folder for each client. In several of these folders are a document, specific to that client, but with the same name as a similar though not identical document in another client's folder. In other words in client1's folder there may be document.doc and in client2's folder there may be a document.doc. I have need to create a collection of the 400 or so document.doc files in one place but if I were to try to simply copy them from the search result I would get a message asking me if I want to overwrite the files. Is there a way, perhaps from the command line, to copy the files from the search results to the new location and append the name of the folder from which the file is being copied to the file? In other words, client1\document.doc and client2\document.doc will be copied to newfolder\documentclient1.doc and newfolder\documentclient2.doc. Is this something for which I should use robocopy? I've got two computers, one running xp pro sp3 and the other running win 7 pro sp1. The files are on an ms small business server 2011 and will, hopefully, be copied to a file on one of the two local computers from the server. Thanks!

A:copy files from search result and append previous location to file

You cannot copy a file with the same name to a new location without overwriting the previous version. Rename the file before copying it, If you want to keep the original file name in the original folder, then copy it and rename it before moving it. Of course if you rename the file then it will not get updated once changes are made.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

Greetings! I have been using Windows Backup for years with no problems. Today I got a new Buffalo external harddrive with USB V3. I started the backup, then remembered something and stopped the backup in the middle. I have no idea if this has anything to do with my problem. When I was ready to restart the backup I first went to the new drive and deleted the folder that had been created by Windows Backup. Then I restarted the backup. It backed up all the data without a hitch, but when it started to work on the System Image the whole thing stopped and I got the error message: Windows Backup cannot find the shadow copy of the source volume. I tried removing programs, I did a System Restore to a point before I did the first backup. Nothing helped. I attempted backups at least four times with the same result. I haven't a clue how to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yes, I wanted to also mention that I've been doing backups to my old Seagate drive and have no idea if these are stored on catalog files somewhere that are conflicting. As a test I reconnect the Seagate and tried a backup but it failed with the same error.

I have an HP notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I have no idea what else to do at this point.

A:Windows Backup cannot find the shadow copy

Not sure about the main problem, but you can download a program like Macrium Reflect Free Edition to make a system image and boot disk to use for backups. It's actually more reliable for backups if you test the boot disk to make sure you'll be able to access your system images.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to batch files and batch file software, so apologies in advance.

I've done some research on Google etc but I seem to just be getting more and more confused trying to use various different scripts and programs and reading different info on various websites.

This is what I need...

I have a folder with around 2000 files in it. I want to be able to copy certain files from this folder (normally around 40) and place them in a brand new folder, I want to be able to do this with nothing more than a txt file that has all the file names I need copying in it with every file name on a separate line.

I receive around 10 new txt files each day so you can imagine how tedious it is searching through 2000 files, picking out the 40 I need, 10 times a day everyday.

To make things even more complicated, the txt files I receive don't always have the correct file names in them, maybe there's a misspelling or a word or two missing for some of the names. That's ok when I'm going through picking out the files I need to copy myself because I can normally tell which file is being requested, but I can't see it being so easy for a program or whatever to do, I'm guessing it'll need to have a search feature where it picks out the most likely file.

I'd like it to be as automated as possible. I receive the txt file, make sure each file name is on a separate line then a program or script or whatever goes out and picks out the files (or most likely files f... Read more

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

Hi! My computer crashed and did not re-boot, but after viewing a tutorial on this forum, I managed to get most of my data back (using a copy and paste method). However, I have not been able to find the folder with my emails in. I was using windows live mail to download my emails onto the computer.
Does anyone know how to find this folder, which I believe is hidden in normal view?
