Thinkpad Workstation Dock 40A5 (for P50) and Linux

Q: Thinkpad Workstation Dock 40A5 (for P50) and Linux

I am having a whole range of display problems trying to setup dual external monitors using the DisplayPorts on the ThinkPad Workstation Dock model 40A5 with a TP P50 running Linux. Most notably, only one DisplayPort works and only in conjunction with the internal ThinkPad monitor; I never see both external monitors in the Display setup utility. So I can not get the DisplayPort/DisplayPort combination to work. Also, the VGA/DisplayPort combination does not work. Just very bizarre behavior. I am using RHEL 7.2. Has anyone had luck making this combination work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I recently bought a Thinkpad X1 Extreme and I am now locking for a suitable Thunderbolt 3 dock. Although I've read a lot of posts about various docks I am still a little consfused about which one to choose. It seems like the following ones would all work with the X1 Extreme:1. Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W:https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...2. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (170W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/universal-cable-docks-thunderbolt/Thun...3. ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W):https://www.lenovo.com/ca/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/Thunderbolt-WS-230W-dock-US/p/40AN023... Please correct me if I am wrong but to me it seems as if the only difference between these docks is that the workstation ones come with two AC adapters each and a special Thunderbolt/Power cable to avoid using two different cables. Or are there any other technical differences? So if I am okay with a two cable solution couldn't I just use the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W and connect it via Thunderbolt while at the same time use my 135W AC adapter to charge the laptop? Thanks a lot in advance.

When the P50 is docked with the lid closed, my two Dell 23" monitors (P2317H) connected via  2 Display Ports both recieve a signal from the dock. When the lid is opened, one monitor will lose signal. I have updated the Nvidia driver on the P50, as well as the firmware on the dock, which did not resolve the issue.  I have also tested this with a differnt P50, dock, monitors, and cables with the same result. OS: Windows 10 64-bitHardware: Lenovo ThinkPad P50, Lenovo ThinkPad Ultra Dock 40A2, Dell 23" Monitors P2317H

Using a thinkpad P70 with the new workstation dock. If I put the P70 on the dock with the lid closed and press the power button on the dock the laptop powers up but nothing appears on the two display port monitors that are connected to the dock. If I put the P70 on the dock, open the lid and press the power button on the laptop then the laptop boots ok.  I can then close the lid and continue work off the two connected monitors. I want to know how I can avoid having to open and close the laptop lid since it kind of destroys the point of having a docking station. Had a W510 beforehand and it did not display this problem.

I have a P51 that I mainly use in the ThinkPad Workstation Dock. The dock obstructs most of the air intakes of the P51, causing the CPU (and GPU) to heat up more and the fans to spin more and louder. I am looking for a solution (like drilling holes into the part of the dock that obstructs the air intake). Has anyone find s solution? @Lenovo: How can it be that the air intakes are blocked by the workstation dock? Is the workstation dock not fit for the P51?

Dear community, I am running a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock with my P72 and I am having a hard time to get some of my realtime USB devices to run properly: (1) 1080p Webcams: I tested 2 devices (Logitech C930e and Microsoft LifeCam Studio) and both provide an unstable video stream, which is regularly interrupted by distortions. A lower 720p stream with another device (Logitech C270) works fine, though. (2) Oculus Rift Headset and Oculus Sensor: Does not run at all or with bad tracking performance. Those devices require a stable USB 3.0 connection to function properly. All of those devices run perfectly when connected to my Thinkpad P72 diretly. So chances are, that the Dock is causing the problems, I have the Dock's latest drivers (v10011) and firmware (04-0E-83_Rev_0083) installed. Does the Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock actually support fast USB connections (such as high definition Webcams)? Or is it rather likely that my Dock and/or the Thunderbolt cable are damaged?  I have been working on this issue for many hours now. So any advice is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robert

I received the ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock back in October. In fact, I got two: one for the home office and one for the work office. It came in a small but heavy package (yes, it has two power adapters inside: a 65W and a 230W one). As mobile workstations have a power requirement that is more than 100W - P1/X1X requires 135W, the P52 170W and the P72 230W - a single TB3 cable cannot carry power to the notebook. Hence the special double cable that comes with the dock. I know I read a lot of arguments on which is better - the mechanical dock or the cable dock.    I have been using both docks daily since I got them, and I gathered my thoughts into two articles.   The review has my opinion about the dock and how it functions. You will also find more pictures about the dock and cable in this article. The troubleshooting article has some issues I bumped into and some solutions for them. One issue in particular mechanical dock fans will love :-) The cable can dislodge easily, and while the dock functions because there is a Thunderbolt 3 connection, the power connection gets terminated and the notebook will use battery power. Read more about in my troubleshooting article.

Today I updated my P50 BIOS to latest version available on the Lenovo website: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/rs/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Something is seriously wrong with this BIOS update. It worked like charm before, and now it won't boot when docked (Workstation Dock for P50/P70). The only way to use it docked is to first undock it, start the boot process and when Windows 10 logo appears on screen, then quickly re-dock it. I tried to load BIOS factory defaults, but it did not help. Discrete graphics (M1000M) is forced in BIOS and display priority is set to docking station. Anybody else having this problem and how did you solve it?  Regards,Dragan

Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation DockEU/INA/VIE/ROKModel name: 40AN0230EULink (US version) I didn't find any decent pictures and or specs about this dock for the P series workstations, so here you are some pictures. It has a special combined cable, that allows to attach the powercable and the Thunderbolt cable in one. On the P1, P52, and P72, the sockets for the power adapter and the Thunderbolt are arranged the same way that the cable can plug in exactly. This is a simple and clever solution I think. The dock arrives with:230 W power adapter (which is for the P72 necessary, the P52 and P1 can use smaller ones), and I think is a simple pass-through from the dock to the laptop.65W power adapter - which is for powering the dock itself Downsides:The dock's cable is only 60 cm long, so there is not enough length to hide the dock (I think this is related to display data on Thunderbolt - can someone confirm?)And that the cable can be plugged in in one direction, so it will determine how the laptop and dock can be positioned relative to each otherConnections:USB: 5Thunderbolt: 2Audio: 1Network: 1Lock: 1List price is 392? in Belgium.

HelloI've seen postings on Solidworks forum that there can be a conflikt between the Intel® HD Graphics 630 and the Quadro P2000 when running on extern monitor: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/233873 "I have a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with an Intel Xeon E-2176M and an NVIDIA Quadro P2000. The integrated graphics for the Xeon processor are Intel UHD P630, which does not appear to have official support from Solidworks. When connected to a second monitor, Solidworks crashes anytime I try to open or start a part because the second monitor uses the integrated graphics. The only work-around I have is to disable the Intel graphics drivers, but this is annoying and I feel like I shouldn't have to do this. The NVIDIA control panel setting is already telling Solidworks to use the P2000 card, but this doesn't seem to matter. All my drivers are up to date with what has been validated by Lenovo. Solidworks just doesn't like UHD P630. Does anyone know if support for UHD P630 is in the works?" Is it likely to be a problem on a Thinkpad P1 gen2 with an Quadro T2000 and Intel® HD Graphics 630 when running Solidworks on ekstern monitor on Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock - EU/INA/VIE/ROK? I ask becuse this will be a dealbraker for me if I buy the Thinkpad P1, as I normally always use external monitor at home when docked!

I have a Thinkpad P50 that is currently docking on the dockstation 40A5.First issue:  I plugged a Jabra Speak 410 (that has no on/off button) into the dock's USB and it would turned on.  When I put the laptop to sleep, the Jabra will turns off since I'm assume that the dock's USB was turned off as well.  The issue comes when I wake the laptop, the Jabra won't turn on.--The only way to get it turn on is to unplug and replug.  My guess is that the dock's USB needs to be wake manually somehow?       The only trick I see to get the Jabra to wake when the laptop wake is to have a mouse connect directly to the dock (as my mouse is currently connecting to the laptop).  It seems though, having a mouse on the dock will tell the dock's USB to wake up (have power) when the laptop wakes up.  Again, is there another way to wake the dock's USB after it went to sleep and then wake? Second issue:  I downloaded the firmware to update the dock thinking that it might fix my issue.  However, I got the following error:       Error description: Can't connect to Synaptics VMMxxxx DP hub IC

Thinkpad P51 with dual (DVI and HDMI) monitors connected to Dock.  P51 wakes fine and one monitor (DVI) sees signal (awakes from sleep mode), the other sees no signal.  Regardless no video information is sent to either monitor - the DVI monitor is awake but black screen - the HDMI remains asleep. Removing and reinserting connectors has no impact. Cycling P51 into and out of sleep mode makes no difference. Removing P51 from dock and all functions correctly. USB (dongle) mouse and keyboard functions also loses functionality when P51 is docked.  They awaken the P51 but do not function correctly. removal of Laptop from dock and they function fine along with local monitor.  Re-install into dock and mouse/keyboard are inoperable. Only a hard shutdown and reboot via the dock switch (laptop remaining docked) returns the system to correct function.  All is normal and functioning.  Both monitors are immediately recognized, USB mouse & keyboard fully functional. When plugged in: Monitors set to sleep in 10 and PC in 30mins.  Short sleep (50-90mins) and system awakens correctly - overnight sleep (8-10hrs) and this happens every time.   Latest Dock FW/drivers is installed.   System and dock brand new - just arrived last week.

Hi, Do you know if the Thinkpad Workstation Dock is compatible with a Wacom Cintiq? I have to reset the resolution on the Cintiq everytime I restart, power on/off my laptop. Hi, I'm using a Thinkpad Pro dock with an L470 on Windows 10(both brand new). I have a VGA monitor and a DVI monitor connected, and I can output to both screens as well as the laptop display just fine, however as soon as I undock, or switch off the laptop, when I come to use it again, neither of the screens are showing as connected. I have to unplug them from the dock and plug them back in again, at which point they are recognised and work fine... until next time I have to undock/switch off. I have tried this with a different laptop (also L470, but running windows 8.1) with even worse results. On 8.1 the screen will repeatedly flicker for about 10 seconds, and any combination of the screens will work (sometimes just the laptop screen, sometimes just 1 monitor, sometimes all 3). Even when all 3 work, it rarely has the correct resolution, and takes several attempts to get it working properly. The whole point of having a dock is that there is no need to keep plugging things in every time you sit down, if I have to re-plug the monitors every time it is pretty pointless having a dock in the first place. I have updated the BIOS on the laptop, updated every driver, updated the firmware for the dock and Windows 10 is bang up to date. I'm about out of ideas now and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on a fix for this? I see web searches that this is quite a common issue, but most of the "fixes" are what I have already done, or are specific to Windows 7 or 8... Read more

I used the Lenovo System Update (v5.07.0074) and was prompted to download and install (was listed as Critical Update) the Firmware to my Dock.  As always, I closed all applications and sat as the Firmware downloaded. I got the expected prompt to ensure I was plugged in. I then watched as the upgraded prompted me to install. Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Connected, and noticed that before I connected the White light on the power button was illuminated. Shrugged, and pushed the power button. Nothing. I un-plugged the Dock, got a cup of coffee, returned and plugged it back in. Nothing. I then noticed that none of the pass-through power was working on the dock.  So, I unplugged it again.  Unplugged everything connected to it, and held the power button down for 15 seconds in an effort. All of this at the recommendation of Lenovo Support. Who, by the way, was very nice and well spoken. Nothing we did worked. I happened to have another Thunderbolt 3 cable in my bag, and no change. Hi Everyone, Having an issue I have 2 Dell u2414h and an Asus 28" VG278H looking to have all 3 connected to the dock but seems as though the workstation dock only supports a single DP 1.2 connection even though it has two and the thunderbolt port is non existant on the dock.  I'm looking to connect all 3 of my monitors to this dock any guidence on how I can go about this? the two dells have mini display port, Display port and HDMI the Asus has DVI, VGA and HDMI I tired to daisy chain the Dells but the screen just blinks on and off with the display. Can I use the thunderbolt 3 connection somehow? I wouldnt be oppesed to use a EGPU but I have not read anyone that has even tried an EGPU enclosure on the P50. Any help would be appriciated I've flashed the dock and p50 to the newest BIOS and updated all the drivers for the M2000m quadro as well.

A:3 displays with P50 and Workstation Dock

The dock is only limited in a single DP 1.2 bandwidth (there is a 'branching device' in nVidia topology), so it can drive 3 1080p monitors (2x digital + 1 VGA). Can get USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 => DisplayPort adapters to connect more monitors (e.g. http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-USB-Type-DisplayPort-Adapter/dp/B0157RVTDW , although mine is yet to arrive).  There should be many more of these in 3-6 months, even Thunderbolt 3->Dual DisplayPort (each up to 4K @ 60Hz). Right now, however, selection is quite limited and Dell TB15 dock was reported to have issues with P50/P70. Perhaps resolved with the Thunderbolt software update already.

Hello, I have an annoying issue with the p72 and the tb3 workstation dock.  I unpack the p72 and plug it into the dock in the morning, then power it on.  100% of the times, the USB on the dock doesn't work, everything else(displays, ethernet) does.  This means the mouse and keyboard do not respond.  Replugging the mouse/keyboard does nothing. However, if I unplug and replug the dock, then it works.  So essentially USB never works the first time, I always have to replug it to get it to work the second time. Also, I have 2 identical workstation tb3 docks(bought at the same time from Lenovo even) at different desks and they both have the exact same problem, so it is not a bad dock. Any ideas?

I have a a Lenovo LT1952p Monitor that I would like to use as a second external monitor. Both monitors work individually through either DVI or VGA. However, I can't get them to both work at the same time no matter what configuration I use. I was told they didn't have to be identical monitors to work together. What am I doing wrong?

Hello, I have a Lenovo X1E, 1st gen 20MF laptop hooked to my second Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock. I have already had to replace the Dock once because of connection issues. My current one was messing up as well until I flashed both the X1E thunderbolt controller and the dock as well, I also read on another forum about disabling some power setting in the BIOS but I cant remember what setting it was. However, now when I launch a full screen game, such as World of Warcraft, the dock will disconnect and reconnect randomly. I am about to toss this $400 dollar paperweight out the window! Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful!

I have a P50 with i7-6820, M2000M, 16GB. If I have the laptop docked and restart or cold boot it will not boot, fans spin up very high and screen stays black. I can turn off or unplug monitors when its like this and it doesn't help, the caps lock or numlock key won't change, as if its not POSTing at all.If I dock when it's asleep, hibernating, or on, it works fine. The only thing that works is undocking, holding power button down, powering on, and redocking.I have a USB Hub (Dell P2715Q USB with Webcam/speakers plugged into it) and dual 4k monitors. One 4k monitor is on display port on the dock and other is on Thunderbolt 3 to DP adapter. Is anyone else having this issue, is it known or planned on being fixed?

Hello All.  I am new here. My company replaced my W540 (Windows 7 OS) Thinkpad with a P52 (Windows 10 OS) Thinkpad.  I have an external DisplayPort monitor and extend the desktop to it.  I have a USB printer.  I use both wired Ethernet, and wifi.  I have a wireless Logitech mouse.  I also have a set of Altec speakers.  The P52 no longer uses the sit on type of Dock, so I bought a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock (230W).  I set everything up, with the external monitor connected to the Thunderbolt 3, along with the Ethernet, printer, speakers, and Logitech Unifying transceiver.  With everything connected, the P52 connected to the monitor just fine, and I extended the Desktop to it.  The P52 could not see the printer, the Ethernet, or the Logitech Unifying transceiver.  If I move these items to direct connection on the P52, they are all found right away. Today, I downloaded the latest software and drivers for the Thunderbolt 3, and then installed them.  I have the same results for the four peripherals.  Am I missing something?  My Windows 10 OS is the Enterprise Edition, version 1803.  The Dock lets me connect the monitor and the power with one cable, but I still need to plug in and out the other four items if I use them. Help Please... Thanks,Bunsen1

My current configuration is a Lenevo P50 on a Workstation dock (which replace the Pro dock hoping to fix some problems) with a Intel i7-6700 and Quadro M1000. This is connected to 2 external displays:-Philips Full HD 1920*1080 24 inch screen via HDMI (has also VGA/DVI connector-Barco 30inch 3280*2016 via active DP->DVI adapter-laptop display (full hd is working) If I put the laptop in standby, many times the Full hd screen via HDMI is not waking up and only the 30inch starts. I can fix this by restarting the laptop. Also it happens often that the keyboard/mouse do not connect after standby. This is then fixed by undock->dock. Many time after starting from stanby, windows hello does not work, so can't use the fingerprint scanner. I find it very disappointing that such an expensive dock has such problems.  I never had these things with HP of Dell docks. Who does recognize these problems? Is there something I can do?

I'm using an X1E with an external monitor connected to a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock via DP and the laptop is locked in dGPU-only mode with no apparent option to run switchable or internal GPU only. Is there any way of changing this, because I really don;t want the machine constantly running hot if I'm just doing office work and have no need for the GPU to run

I didn't realize it, but I purchased a thinkpad thunderbolt 3 workstation dock (170W) for my x1 yoga gen 4. Can someone tell me how I am supposed to connect them correctly, since the dock came with the dual cable. Or is this something that isn't compatible and needs to be exchanged? I hope not because it took forever for it to arrive. Thanks,Jesse
