Windows 8: keyboard laptop randomly doesn't work after booting

Q: Windows 8: keyboard laptop randomly doesn't work after booting

Hello. I'm having a rather incredible problem with Windows 8 Pro. Sometimes, after booting, my notebook's keyboard doesn't work at all. Some facts about all this to inform the diagnosis:
The keyboard doesn't work in Windows; it does in the UEFI bios. (Ie I boot to windows and it doesn't work, I then reboot, test it in the bios and see that it works; I go back to windows and it still doesn't work there.)
It happens randomly: maybe once every ?5? boot ups. Definitly not always.
**I think** (but aren't sure) that it only happens when booting, not when coming back from hibernation or sleep.
Unplugging the battery or the power cord doesn't help.
I'm fairly careful about malware and I don't think it's related. I don't have any malware protection other than Windows'.
The System section of the Event Viewer only has one apparently relevant event, "The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.". Notice this is related to a Logitec input driver, and I'm having trouble with the notebook's built-in keyboard. I never plugged a Logitec keyboard (but I did use a Logitec mouse in the past).
Nevertheless I acted upon that event log. Some pages elsewhere (The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device... error - Windows 7 Help Forums) suggested changing the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework from Manual (triggered) to automatic. It didn't help.
It has always solved itself after a random amount of time (from a few minutes to an hour), but today I won't go back to working.
There's no warning sign in the device manager. The ps/2 keyboard driver has a 2006 date, though.

The notebook is an Asus U46e: https://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/U46E/

Thanks in advance for whatever help you can provide!

Preferred Solution: Windows 8: keyboard laptop randomly doesn't work after booting

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Windows 8: keyboard laptop randomly doesn't work after booting

Some additional info:
It was suggested somewhere else that turning off Windows 8's fast boot option would help; it didn't.
I just completed a run of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and found nothing except for 4 autohotkey .bin files that seem ok for the rest of the AVs at virustotal.
Nothing relevant seems to be logged in the System log when the keyboard comes back up.

Thanks again!

Ever since I've upgraded my dad's laptop to Windows 10, the keyboard and touchpad stop working randomly, and would work only after I restart the computer. (logging off, switch user, standby mode doesn't resolve it.)
There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it would be ok for a few days, sometimes it would happen again after a few hours. I mostly do internet browsing on the laptop.

When the problem occurred:
- The keyboard AND the touchpad would both stop working at the same time.
- USB mouse still works. (I do not have an external keyboard to test)
- The lights on the keys themselves (eg caps lock, wifi) would still remain on if they're activated but cannot be toggled on/off as usual.
- The device manager still showed no problems with the mouse or keyboard.

Things I've tried:
- sfc /scannow
- disabled sticky keys
- used the generic drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- reinstalled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- updated to the latest synaptics driver
- made a new synaptics trackpad profile
- disabled touchpad when using the USB mouse

Laptop stats:
HP Pavillion dm1-4002AU
Windows 10 Home 64bit (upgraded from Win7 and then reset to a fresh state)
AMD Radeon HD 6230 Graphics
6GB RAM
Synaptics Driver Version: 19.0.12.95 06Jul15
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Lenovo ThinkPad PS/2 keyboard

This is very exasperating. I would appreciate some help in stopping this problem permanently, thanks.

Hi all,

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and while recently doing some computer maintenance to get rid of some malware, I most likely screwed up my computer. At the Windows 7 user login screen, my mouse and keyboard are non-responsive. I don't think this is a problem with the actual hardware because I can access the boot menu with F12 when I boot it up. Hi,

I have an Asus R510D laptop, which originally came w/ Windows 8 installed. I downgraded to Windows 7, and the very first time I booted, everything was fine. Ever since then, after boot, at the login screen, the keyboard does not allow me to type my password. However, I am able to use the function keys, which is the workaround I've found for this issue.

After booting and reaching the login screen, I must put the keyboard to sleep, then awaken it, for the keyboard to function properly. I've tried updating the driver, but it doesn't solve the issue. I was wondering if anyone had come across an issue like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Have an old asus laptop that i use very little. I noticed that when i type something ... nothing shows up.

I open up google. I type keyboard letters into google... nothing shows up. However when i click the letter F... it would seem to click on the top right corner where the 3 horizontal lines are located right under the X. The google chrome settings.

I then use my touchpad or regular mouse. When i try to click on anything like picture i have or video etc or icons on my desktop.. it would open up the properties. Does anyone know how do i fix this issue? Basically i cannot type any letter anywhere.

A:Laptop Keyboard Doesn't Work Very Strange Issue

Basically anything i click on does this... unless i click on start menu and then click on the program. Thus if i click on say avast or a program on desktop, it shows the properties of it. If i click on program using start menu... it does show up.

I scanned using malwarebytes. It did mention something trojan.something but i removed it. But this is using malwarebytes free. I have avast as well but doesnt detect anything.

Its definitely not number lock. I tried this.

The other thing that was strange was after a while... suddenly the mouse and touchpad it did click. But then when i shut the lid of my computer down then opened it up... have same issue. So same problem.

The thing though is i did recently go to certain sites where they have passwords for adult sites... and used it to log in etc. Could this be the cause of it? Thus i used a login and password from someone who posted free username/pass for an adult site.

heres another strange thing. When i click on tab... it would display all the windows i have opened in like a ruler... then each time i press tab... it would go to each window.

I have 3 drives, C:, D:, and E:. E: is just a storage drive. XP was originally installed on the D: drive. I installed Win7 on the C: drive following the instructions at Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP. After installing Win7, I didn't get an option to boot XP so I used EasyBCD to add an XP entry to the boot menu. That worked, but after I boot into XP, if I shutdown or restart I get an error message about the Windows Boot Manager that says

"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem
...
etc
...
File: \boot\bcd
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data."

Then I have to run startup repair from the Win7 disk. But then I just get stuck with Win7 and no boot menu entry for XP. If I try EasyBCD again, the same process results. How can I fix this?

A:Dual booting XP and Windows 7 doesn't work after using XP

Please post back a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map and listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu.

Are you using EasyBCD 2.0? Use this version, select Edit Boot Menu to remove XP listing. Then Add it back, accept boot files, let autocomplete, Save, Restart.

If this fails, then on BCD Backup/Repair tab, Repair Boot files.

Hi guys,

I have a problem and I've tried to figure it out for the whole day now.

It's mind-boggling and SUPER frustrating at the same time.

Basically I installed a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 Pro to my computer and when I plug both DVI cables into the GTX 750Ti (I run Dual monitors) it goes to the 'Windows 8 Blue logo start up but then suddenly my monitors have no signal (and my mouse turns off, aka it looks like my USB shutsdown) but my mobo is still on + cpu fans/case fans, etc.

So I tried using the IGPU and it works fine, you can plug one DVI into the IGPU DVI out, and one monitor DVI to the GTX750Ti and it will boot into windows fine.

The biggest thing that boggles me is that upon a fresh install it worked fine, AND I can reinstall windows fine again, but it *SEEMS* like after I install the NVIDIA graphics card drivers it starts happening again and I can only use IGPU to boot into windows. Now, when I first installed windows it was working fine, till I shut it down and it won't boot again hence having to try IGPU. I tried formatting, I've tried everything!

All my parts are brand new, I've tried everything there is to try, and googled alot (I've enabled/disabled secureboot multiple times, I've done 'primary display adapter 'PCI-E' and switched between them), I've tried almost everything!

My specs are as follows:

Hi, this isn't an urgent problem, in fact it has been a problem since I installed Windows 7 over a year ago, but I have recently decided that it is extremely na´ve of me to ignore the problem, because no matter how lucky I am I will need to access safe mode eventually, and that's not possible right now. Basically my computer works 100% fine (barring speed issues or any other minor complaint), including my keyboard, except when I have to hard boot my computer/power shuts off/whatever causes the computer to boot up into the "windows error recovery" screen. When I get to that screen I get four options: boot windows 7 normally (highlighted); boot windows 7 in safe mode; boot windows 7 in safe mode with networking; and one other one I believe. There's a countdown from 30 seconds and at the end of the countdown the highlighted option will be selected if I don't choose one myself with the arrow keys and enter/return. Problem is, I can't select a different option from the highlighted one. the arrow keys and enter key (or any other key) are all functionless. The keyboard is plugged in and the computer knows that because its media lights (the mute/play-pause/stop/&c. keys) are all lit up. In the past I have had to use Safe Mode for many old computers, as I'm sure most people have, and currently I don't have that option. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

The keyboard on my Aurora m9700 is having some strange issues. I cannot figure if it is software or hardware related, either. At random intervals, the keyboard will cease function. But when I go into standby, then come out of standby the problem seems to be magically fixed! In fact, the problem just happened right after I finished typing the last sentence. I checked event manager, nothing changed. I had to go into standby and come out of it...

So please, is there anyone on here that can help me out? I have reformatted the computer since this started happening and nothing has changed, so I do not know what could possibly be causing this!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to these forums and I'm really hoping someone can help me, as this is an incredibly irritating problem.
I have a dell/logitech optical USB mouse that randomly stops working. The problem is not the mouse; it works fine on other computers. Every few seconds while using this mouse, the computer makes the sounds as if the cord has been unplugged and plugged back in, when it actually hasn't moved.
Sometimes, a dialogue box pops up that says the USB device is not recognized, but it goes away when the mouse begins to work for another few seconds.
Any ideas? Please help. This is driving me crazy.

A:USB mouse randomly doesn't work

I would try different USB ports. Also, if you have other USB devices, you can try those in the ports. You could also try a USB to PS/2 converter.

On a laptop my family uses, the sound goes out while using Firefox. I've been told that sound was coming when watching a DVD, but right when Firefox was brought up, there e would be no sound when watching videos. I don't know if the sound works while doing anything else on the internet.
And the drivers should be up to date.
Anything I could try to fix the problem? Could it be updating Adobe's Flash player?

Have you tried various programs to make fairly certain that it's just Firefox that is the issue?

So I was using Windows 8 on my Samsung laptop, but a little while ago I decided to switch it to windows 7 home premium 64 bit since I didn't really like 8.. since then a lot of the build in keyboard functions have stopped working (understandably). Most of the F1-12 keys would control things like volume, screen brightness, wifi connection etc. I can live without using most of them since they are able to be changed elsewhere, but the one thing I can't figure out how to use is the keyboards backlight. it worked when the computer was running windows 8, so obviously it HAS the hardware, but I don't know if windows 7 recognizes that it's there. Any ideas how to fix

Hello and welcome spirit some decent system specs would be helpful mate because we need to know what we are working with http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/180324-system-info-see-your-system-specs.html

Now this is similar to a problem that I had with my new Asus laptop that had 8 and I had to make changes in the BIOS for certain things to happen like booting 7 for example. So as I have already said the specs please before we can even make a start.

Hi!

My Windows 8 laptop is slow, and freezes a lot. Also, sometimes the mouse stops working - it can move around, but clicking doesn't work (in my mouse or with my touchpad), and I have to restart to fix that.

This is a work computer that I inherited from the person before me, so it's possible that there are viruses/who knows what on it. I ran a Windows Defender scan, and it came up clean.

Here's my dds and attach. Thanks!!!

I am fixing an old PC for a friend and after finding around 2000+ errors/viruses with AVG I decided to reinstall Windows (XP Pro). Before reinstalling I decided to fully wipe the HDD and make sure it is error free except when I boot MHDD from the CD the keyboard doesn't work and as MHDD is command based I cannot do anything because I can't type!

This may not be a fault but could be because it is an old PC designed to use PS/2 keyboard rather than USB but I'm not sure

Anyone any ideas?

Okay, so here's the deal. Whenever I connect to my wireless internet, be it when booting up the computer or changing to it via the modem cables, it refuses to work. The only way it works is if I click on the network computer in the bottom right corner and then troubleshoot for a couple mins, until the computer automatically fixes the problem. Im guessing a service or something isn't working. Can anyone help me here? Ive tried buying new modem to wireless modem cables but still no luck. Obviously using Windows 7 (Ultimate)

Good day,

I have an Asus Z68 mainboard with UEFI-BIOS. Windows 7 Professional 64bit is installed in UEFI mode on a GPT partitioned drive (SSD). It worked flawlessly.

Now I added my second, old harddrive, that is still MBR formatted.
Windows won't start anymore, instead I am seeing "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and that's all.

I have two options in BIOS regarding boot priority:
1) I can boot from the SSD as primary priority
2) I can select an option called "Windows Boot loader", I think this refers to the UEFI boot code that Windows wrote to the UEFI.

If I select the first option, I get the "Windows is loading files screen" and then the "Windows has detected a startup error, do you want to repair the system startup" screen. If I select "Start Windows normally", I get a blinking cursor and then nothing. If I select "Repair startup", I see "Windows is loading files", and then again the "Startup repair screen". It is an endless loop.

If I select the second option, I get "Windows is loading files", then a blinking cursor, and nothing more.

Is there any way to get my Windows to boot again without disconnecting or re-partitioning the old harddrive?

Note that the old harddrive is NOT for booting, as it is just a datastore.

Philipp

Philip,

Have you checked that the BIOS is not trying to RAID your 2 devices, your should find that in Integrated Peripherals (or something similar) in the BIOS

Hello!

Today, my computer randomly just shut off, as if the battery was unplugged. When I turned it back on, the sound was not working.

Troubleshooting showed the drivers to not be working. In inspecting the driver properties, there was the message, "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I tried restarting it, to no avail. I tried deleting and re-downloading the audio drivers. When I tried to delete the Realtek driver in the Control Panel, the installscript crashed (I was able to uninstall other things with no problem). I managed to get around this by deleting it through device manager (the installscript still gave me a crash message, but after the driver was uninstalled). The Intell Display Audio driver uninstalled without an issue.

I re-downloaded and installed the drivers. It still didn't work.

I went into the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet2\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and deleted UpperFilters (there was no LowerFilters). I restarted my computer. Still the sound doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Computer Randomly Shut Off, Now Sound Doesn't Work

A computer that automatically shuts down has over heated, and shut down to stop damaging being done.
You did not say, but since you mentioned a battery, I assume this is a laptop? Be sure to blow out the fans on the side and bottom of the laptop with a can of compressed air.
As for the sound, after restarting, in the Device Manager are there any yellow flags for devices, especially under Sound, Video and Game Controllers? If there is no longer a Realtek device, or Other device, then restart the computer and boot into Setup (Bios) go to Integrated Peripherals. Look for Onboard Audio, if it is disabled, using your arrow and enter keys Enable it. Save and Exit. When the computer comes back up you should get New Hardware Found, if you previously installed a driver it should load.

Hi everyone, I currently own a T430S, and just recently the FN button on my laptop started to malfunction. It would work sometimes work but most of the times it doesn't register at all(refer to the video). Also I encountered another problem which is my laptop will wake up right away after put into sleep mode. This happens either when I put it into sleep mode or when I close my laptop(please also refer to the video). I have tried to reset my BIOS, tried unplugging my keyboard, but still no luck. Is there a way to fix this issue? This issue really has been bugging me for the past few days. I would appreciate any kind of support! Thank you!

Hello everyone,

I just built a desktop with brand new hardware, all except the hard drive, which is taken from my old system. The hard drive has the OS from my old system (which was working fine) plus all of the data.

Now, the hardware on the system seem to be working fine, but it goes to BSOD on boot.

System specifications:
Windows 7 Ultimate Edition 64bit (Retail;Original OS)
Asus P8Z68-v LX
Zotac Geforce GTX 560
Intel Core i-7 2600k Sandy Bridge
8 gb ram Corsair
700W power supply

Here is the boot process:
1. ASUS logo from P8Z68-V keyboard
2. "Starting Windows" screen (the 4 colored dots move, in the process of becoming the windows logo)
3. The dots freeze for about half a second
4. BSOD: STOP 0x0000007B 0xFFFFF880009A97E8 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034 0x0000000000 0x0000000000

I've tried System Restore and Startup Repair Tool, neither does a thing. I've also tried to start the system with Safe Mode, but the same BSOD happens.

Because I can't get into Windows, there's no way for me to run any of the diagnostics tools.

Does anyone know of what the problem is and how I can fix it? Been working on it the whole day and it's driving me crazy...

If there is any additional information I can provide, please post.

Any help is appreciated, thank you so much!!

I have windows 7 home premium dual booting with Linux Mint 8, on a Dell XPS M1530.

When I shut down linux mint and go back into windows I have the following problem.

Upon the windows 7 desktop appearing, I am able to type or use the keyboard as usual-until I touch the touchpad on my laptop. After I touch the touchpad, (even for just the slightest second!) I am unable to type anything. For example, if I launch the start menu and then try to type to find a file nothing will happen. The only way for me to get by this is to reboot the computer again. So essentially I have to reboot twice in order to get a working keyboard with Windows after being in linux.

This problem does not happen if I stay in Windows and reboot windows repeatedly. (I tested it by reinstalling windows and having it as the only OS for about a week.)
I tried the following workarounds: using the Dell support software to disable the touchpad when a mouse is present.

I tried reinstalling the touchpad driver.

Nothing has worked. Alps electric is the touchpad manufacturer.

I asked this question on the ubuntu forums and got back the answer that windows doesn't like the other OS on there and upon reboot gets confused or sees things are in a different state. I was also told that Windows uses a HID device for the keyboard and Linux does not.
Very annoying problem and I doubt there is a fix for it, but please help if you can.
