I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On my HP laptop, updating its Synaptics touchpad driver fixed that exact problem. Elantech may have a similar update. Check laptop mfg's site first, Elantech's site second.

(Note: it is possible that there is a driver update which addresses the issue but makes no mention of the fix in the description. Be sure to create a Restore Point before applying [any] update!)

Hi,
I'm using a Synaptics Touchpad on my Acer V3-551 and when I follow the steps to turn off double tapping (go to the device settings in mouse and click settings and find tapping and disable) I can't seem to find the tapping option. The only options are Overview and Buttons. I have updated my driver to make sure it is fully up to date. This computer was once windows 8 but is now windows 7. Is there an option I need to turn off in order to see it? (full model is V3-551-8469)
Thanks!

Okay so this has been happening for a bout a monty now, when tapping on my touchpad it will select whatever folder or tab I'm tapping, but it will be stuck to the mouse and tapping will no longer work until I press the left mouse button. I've checked and made sure that the touchpad is on, tapping is also on, and everything else that should be on is on. This is getting quite frustrating and I need some help to fix this.

Every time I shutdown and restart I have to go into Options and turn off Tapping.
I must goto Settings -- Devices -- Mouse and TouchPad -- then:
Click on "Additional Mouse Options" at the bottom (grayed but still active)
Click on "TouchPad settings"
Click on "TouchPad settings" (the button) and turn off "Tapping"
Then click on "Apply"

I also clicked on the [reset device] button. (Did not seem to do anything, did not help)

Did you install the touchpad drivers from HP? If so, you may have to play around with some settings for it in control panel. If yo did the upgrade isntall its supposed to keep all your drivers, but sometimes it doesn't retain all of them.

Is it possible to configure a synaptics touch pad settings such as sensitivity, tapping, and type lock settings without the synaptics software?

When I upgraded my laptop to Vista, my touch pad became erratic randomly clicking both left and right buttons as well as being unresponsive and/or jumping to random locations. I discovered that the issue was caused by the synaptics software. When I uninstalled the software part of the driver, the touchpad worked fine, but I can't configure it. I've tried updating to the latest software/driver from the synaptics website as well as Compaq's recommended drivers for my laptop off their website and neither worked. I've also tried on several occasions to deal with Compaq chat tech support but was unable to come up with a solution.

If anyone knows if it can be configured in the registry, or if there is a config file that can be edited, or 3rd party software, please let me know if you have any ideas!

Hi, I am having a problem with my touchpad and Windows 10.  It started yesterday after my computer was frozen after startup and I couldn't access the login screen, so I reset my PC and kept my files.  After resetting and getting back to the desktop I found that If I either tap on the touchpad or do a quick swipe on the touchpad, Windows Action Center will pull up every time and I have to tap or swipe again for it to go away.  I never had the problem before resetting my PC and after speaking with Microsoft they claim it is a malfunction of the touchpad.  I've been searching online and see suggestions to disable 4 finger gestures to resolve the issue, however my laptop does not have 4 finger gestures.  I have reinstalled the driver for the touchpad and still have the issue.  I'm at a loss.Anyone familiar with this issue?  It has become increasingly frustrating and I'm hoping there's a solution.  Thanks!

How about an external mouse mate wired or not and just disable the touch pad altogether when the mouse is plugged and it comes back on when the mouse is taken out . I do that with all my laptops as I find the touch pad really very irritating.

Also if the user is then finding it difficult to manipulate the machine via the touch pad the external mouse is going to be so much easier

When I went back to windows 7 the beeping stopped during boot up but the down key problem exists. I am thinking of downgrading to XP to see if the noise problem and the keyboard works. Argh. This is getting frustrating.

The "tapping" function on my Inspiron 9300's touchpad keeps getting intermittently disabled when I try to watch videos. It's very sporadic and I have, so far, been unable to determine any kind of set pattern or commonality between the times that it happens. The only thing that is for sure is that it only happens when I am attempting to watch videos. i.e., YouTube, CNN, MySpace, etc.

When it happens, I have to go to Control Panel > Mouse > Touchpad and then de-select "Tapping" (yes, it is always still selected even when apparently disabled) and then re-select it and click OK.

The left and right "mouse" buttons below the touchpad are never affected nor is the ability to move the pointer around the screen using the touchpad.

Help? Thanks!

EDITED TO ADD: I should have mentioned that I did uninstall the driver and reinstall an updated one from Dell directly. Also, I just discovered today that I actually don't have to deselect the tapping tick-box and then reselect it as I originally thought. All I have to do is open up the Mouse Properties under the Control Panel and simply click OK to close it again. Works every time.

BUT, why is this happening???

Ok I have this laptop that belonged to my father and I have a problem. Basically I am wanting to turn off the 'tapping' on the touch pad but I just can't.
I have searched online for an answer but nothing I try will work. There are no settings in the control panel, either in the mouse settings or anywhere else that let you turn the tapping off.
Something I read said to press Fn and F9 but that does nothing.
I do remember turning the tapping off once when my dad had the laptop but I can't do it the same way because I installed a fresh copy of Windows and it wasn't from the recovery CD so the software for the touch pad isn't there.
I have tried searching for the software but it appears that this model of laptop doesn't exist!
It is a Toshiba Equium EA60-173 and the model number is PSA67E-00700C8J but I just can't find anything to do with the laptop on the Toshiba website. I did manage to find and try a program called Toshiba Touch and Launch which let me change some aspects of the touch pad but not the blasted tapping.
So if anyone can think of anything else I can try apart from what I have tried already then I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance.

Hi:

I have a Sony VGN-NW270F. I changed the original OS from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional 64 bits. I can't seem to find a way to turn off the feature that equates the tapping of the touchpad to pressing the left mouse button.

I think I might be missing some software or drivers that might have been missing when installing the new OS. I think it is probably Alps Pointing Device, but the driver on Sony's website is only for Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sony Tech Support says that only Windows 7 Home Premium is supported and that therefore I can not turn this tapping feature off.

It seems unreal to me that this would be the case! A new computer, with a new OS and I can't control the tapping feature?!

Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks,

Presumably because that's the only version they sell with that model. A Windows 7 driver is a Windows 7 driver; Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate makes no difference.

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!
Pam

Hello, I have constant issues with the clickpad installed on my laptop. I can say this is the WORST touchpad/clickpad I have EVER had. It was repaired TWO times by HP under my warranty coverage. First, they changed some wires/cables inside and completely uninstalled Windows 10; then, because the problems were still present, they installed a new clickpad, i.e. changed the hardware. Some issues were solved, but others continue to be present. At this point, no matter which settings I try to use for the clickpad, via Settings -> Devices -> Mouse and Touchpad -> Mouse properties -> ClickPad Settings -> Properties for Synaptics ClickPad, very often, but not always, the clickpad does not respond when I tap the first time after I was doing something else. When I tap the second or third time, I finally start to get responses. In other words, every time I tap somewhere ? to close a window, to follow a hyperlink, to put the cursor in a text, to select a portion of a text, etc. ? my first tap does NOTHING. I have to repeat my tap at least one more time before there is a response. I may tap hard or very gently, it just doesn?t matter. It applies both to the single tap and to the double tap. Same applies to the Two-Finger Tapping. The Pointing -> Sensitivity feature is at its maximum. (If I reduce it, the clickpad becomes even more nonresponsive.) The Smart Sense feature is almost Off. (If I put it closer to Max, nothing changes.) The Filter Activatio... Read more

A:clickpad does not respond right away when tapping

I think I recently found a solution (a partial solution at least) for this problem. The root of the problem seems to be the drivers, supplied by Microsoft. The drivers, even new ones, for this clickpad are simply horrible. What?s worse, updates for these junk drivers are installed on my system without any consent from my part whatsoever. Trying to prevent the updates, using a program from Microsoft (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930 ), is useless - the updates for the clickpad are installed anyways. What I did to make my clickpad work significantly better is the following: Download a driver directly from the maker of the clickpad, Synaptics (http://www.synaptics.com/resources ). For my device, I used ?Windows 10 I2C Devices v19.0.19.1?. Do not install the driver as yet, your system will not allow you to do so because of a ?newer? version of the driver ?already installed?.Turn off automatic updates in your operating system, using the following protocol (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/turn-off-windows-update-in-windows-10). This modification is not permanent, you can always turn on the automatic updates in your system, if you wish. Of course, if you turn on the automatic updates, the crappy drivers from Microsoft will be automatically installed too, deleting any other good drivers you installed previously.Completely uninstall the automatically installed driver for the clickpad using the Device Manager (you can bring forward this Manager ... Hi,

We are looking into a particular system to schedule appointments and log provided services, but this system lacks a function which should allow a receptionist to register the customer's arrival so the rep. who is waiting for him is alerted that the customer is here.
The whole point is to avoid depending on an intercom call or chat and instead having an on-screen notification.

The system uses a mysql database, so I was wondering if I could tap into the database with a third party application, is there any tool along the lines of klipfolio, yahoo widgets or similar that would simplify this task for non programmers?

Terminals are currently running Win XP.

Laser Toner Running Low?

HP and Lexmark will hate me for telling you this. You can often get your laser printer back to printing BLACK again if you tap the cartridge from end to end with a heavy pen or small ruler.

Tapping frees a lot of toner stuck to the inside of the cartridge and so allows your printer to print many more good copies before exchanging for a new one.

this started quite recently, while tapping or scrolling.  the right-click context comes up.  it does work when right-clicking as well.  tried changing touchpad settings.  nothing worked, so i have reset the synaptics touchpad to default, to no avail.  can't find anyone else having this problem in any forum on the web, so i figured i'd try here, since it seems to be a hardware issue??  any advice would be greatly appreciated...

A:right-click context coming up when tapping

Hi, un install and reinstall the drivers from hp.com and , if that doesnt work  , delete the synaptic drivers , the touch pad should work with default drivers provided by windows, if its still the same   power down the note book as soon as you hit the power button , keep tapping the esc key on the top left corner until a new window opens up(the start up menu ) choose the option f2 and choose the language to english and then choose component test , choose the touchpad test , if it doesnt work the way it is supposed to , u need to call hp for a repair

I like two finger clicking to bring up a context menu, but I dislike tapping and I disabled that, but it only disabled one finger tapping and not multiple finger tapping. Is it possible to disable it?

Hi, I have a problem with touch screen support of my Yoga 910 on Linux. It's loosing release finger event.I've reported it on kernel issue tracker: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=195625 and I've got reply that it is caused by touch screen firmware. I've also wrote an e-mail on mailing list: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-input/msg51249.html . Kernel support team claim that without firmware update, touch screen can't work correctly. Can Lenovo you prepare such a firmware fix or support kernel's team how to handle such a situation? Arek

I have a 2.5 year old Compaq Presario 900. Recently it takes forever to startup because it hangs midway. Then I would have restart it again and again and again. When it does reach to the main screen, it'll hang again, but when I tap the front hard enough, it'll unfreeze. Sometimes it'll stay ok, but most of the time it freezes after it unfreezes.

Please help. Does anyone know what's wrong with it? Thanks.

When did you last do a defrag and a chkdsk/scandisk on it?

This is a question for Dell:
Are you EVER going to change the factory installed build on your laptops so that tapping, i.e. "tap to click" is DISABLED?
Yes a lot of people like this feature, but there are just as many such as myself who LOATHE it. If laptops are shipped with tapping DISABLED, those who want it can easily enable it - they loose little functionality. However, in the current situation where Dell ship all laptops with it ENABLED, it is actually DANGEROUS!
I've lost count of the number of times files have been selected, deleted, dragged to God knows where or mangled in various ways, or options selected, deselected and applications unintentionally run because the damned stupid machine keeps misinterpreting my normal actions as taps. All until I have waded through several pages of user interface (not always obvious in some versions of the drivers) to turn the damned thing OFF.
Please, PLEASE disable it by default.
