Is it possibly the Anniversary Update, which has blocked my possibilities to change the Lock Screen configuration? In Settings->Personalisation that whole option is greyed out today and I'm stuck with a lock screen, which I can't modify or change. Any help for this? Perhaps there is a registry change I could apply? I would be happy for any suggestion.
I've attached an image. My language is Swedish, but I guess that you will recognise the part of the Settings->Personalisation, which is shown.
Thanks in advance
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
What I'm trying to do is to clone my display at workstation lock and switch to internal or external display at workstation unlock depending on the user.
I found a solution in another post : Locked computer dual monitor
The method 2 described seems to match my case but I can't manage to make it work... I created the tasks but nothing happen when I do Win+L...
Here is the description of the method :
METHOD 2: Scheduled Triggers
This workaround involves changing the display to duplicate screens when you lock your computer and changing it back to 2 screens when you unlock it.
To do this, we'll use task scheduler to run some command lines on a trigger. The triggers will be either unlock or locking of the computer.
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /extend to use two screens
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /clone to clone the screens
or we could also use
%windir%\System32\DisplaySwitch.exe /internal to use just one screen
So lets set this up
Create the First TaskOpen the task scheduler by typing taskschd.msc into RUN or SEARCH and pressing ENTER
Right Click on Task Scheduler (Local) and select 'Create Task'
In the Create Task Window Type a Name for first the task (e.g. Single Display Lock)
Type in a description (E.g. This task is triggered when Windows is locked and changes the display to a single display)
Tick the 'Run with Highest Privilages' Box
Change the 'Configure for' drop down box to "Win... Read more

Select one the same size as your resolution.
Or get Decor8 from Stardock:
After running the Windows 8.1 update 1 i cannot access the settings view for the lock screen. The problem is that when i click into it the settings app exits immediately. This is how i do:
1. Click settings in the right panel.
2. Clicks change PC settings.
3. Click PC and units.
4. This crashes......
I have tried to go into the settings through the bluetooth devices. This Works for all options but the Lock screen setting which also it the one that opens when clicking on PC and units.
I hope you can help me with this problem. I have attached 2 error logs to the post from this event.
There is a software which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings. But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back, I suddenly found that I can not change
the proxy settings manually!
The detail is that I change the auto proxy url, to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change. However, when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back, it never success, and even the same when i'm sure I have
cleared this url in the whole registry, but it back, as it never changes!
I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back, just like it originally should be. But it never works.
So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS 10 AGAIN!
Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know! Or you should let these stuffs out of the ** registry!
I would like to know how to go back to the previous settings for my lock screen, display, slideshow, colors, and sizes. I Keep trying different things and its not working and I don't want to lose some of the apps and do a recovery to default. Can you explain
it to me Please? Thank you I have windows 8.1
I just installed a dvd rom, and the software automatically changed my display resolution.
Now my screen is so blurry, I cant even see enough to get into display and change my colors or resolution back to normal! Basically I'm trying to reset it with a blindfold on.
Is there a another way to change resolution without being in windows?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

I have recently upgraded to windows 8 (clean install) and have become unable to use my Change PC Settings Option. The screen is totally messed up for some reason with most everything blacked out (see attached screen shot.) I have no idea, but it just all of sudden became this way.
I have a GTX 680 with 310.33 (latest) drivers installed.
Any help on this would be hugely appreciated! Thanks

Running XP Home on a Sony Viao laptop, when ever I reboot the machine the screen saver I was using before the reboot changes to either the XP saver or switches to none, it even sometimes does both, first it uses xp and after that none. Any ideas? It's not a real big deal, just strange and a pain in the butt.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
I solved the problem, the problem is that the settings in the registry aren't being saved prior to a reboot. I followed the advice of an other problem where the screen saver didn't work at all and ran a script from Kelly's Korner and the problem hasn't returned.
I want to change the screen with 'load personal settings' when windows starts. The text should change, so either the text or the screen should change.
That screen shouldn't remain long enough for you to see it unless you just created a new User Account. Sounds like you may have a Profile loading problem - possibly malweare related. Any other symptoms?
Have a older Gateway desktop operating on Windows XP Home edition.
My left hand side of my monitor has about 1" of screen not showing. Also resolution isn't correct.
Hello Wrenchman1, and welcome to TSG.
Has that particular monitor ever worked correctly on that particular computer and video controller? If so, have you installed or changed any hardware or software?
Running XP home on a dell computer with intel pentium 4 processor. We were running Yahoo Messenger, Firefox, Zone Alarm, and Glyph when it did this.
My girlfriend was trying to show me something on the settings of the computer, she closed all the windows without saving, (she did not click OK or APPLY) and when she walked away from the computer, the colors suddenly looked very similar to our 20yo MacII. Everything is very large, yet still because of the 4-bit color, very hard to read. I need to return the settings to normal, but when I try to adjust them through the control pannel, there does not appear to be a way to change the settings.
I am concerned we may have a virus, since said girlfriend recently downloaded "Glyph" (a game) from ArcadeTown.com. This game is supposed to be a free trial for an hour. So far it has played for a total of about 16 hours without running out of time. This is suspitious to me.
Update: I restarted the compy, and the problem just magically disappeared. This (http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=0c4aa703-36b5-48bf-893e-fd296898968d&SID=531) was the result of the crash analysis. Anyone know what caused this problem? My Dell is still under warantee, should I complain to Dell about it and request new parts? Is this a software or hardware problem?
Hi fireincarnation, welcome to BC.Don't waste your time complaining to Dell. Since the issue no longer exists there is nothing they can or will do.If this continues to be a problem outside of playing "Glyph", you may want to consider a graphics driver update. Do not get them from MS if you decide to upgrade them. You may also want to check the games preferred color\resolution settings. You may be just out of it's range. This game is supposed to be a free trial for an hour. So far it has played for a total of about 16 hours without running out of time. This is suspitious to me.I downloaded (not installed) and scanned the game setup file using multiple detections and it came up clean. It isn't infected with a virus or trojan. Spyware or Adware is a different story but Arcadetown guarantees none of either.Read other 2 answers
Just curious if anyone knows of a quick way to change the power settings and/or screen saver without having to right click on desktop and choose properties. It's not that it's that hard to do it this way, but I was curious if there was some utility or batch file that could be created to quickly switch between settings.

I run win7-64 and need to install XP. I made a space, and booted from the XP CD. After it loaded files, when starting, it crashed. I read on a forum I need to set the drive to compatibility mode (called legacy in my setup). It warns my OS may not boot.
What should I do? I'm afraid to change the drive setting and have Win7 not boot. But I need to get XP working. I do have two drives. Second is a backup, I could install XP on that, and set the second drive to legacy, and leave my primary drive's current settings.
Thought I'd get some advice before taking the dive.

Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"

Hello C, and welcome to Eight Forums.
This sounds like a group policy has been set to prevent access to those settings. As you found out, this would be a global setting applied to all user accounts (new and old).
Please post a screenshot showing your Windows Update settings to help narrow down which policy it may be since there are a few for Windows Update.

Is there a security policy of any sort that can prevent her from doing this. Or is there even a local security policy that will prevent her from going into the properties of her printer settings. She is a XP user. Thank you in advance for any help that you can give.

My DEFAULT settings

Because of this problem--it keeps cutting me off from OE6 with ERROR messages and I must review and correct my settings. I click DEFAULT and APPLY after I correct my settings--but constantly it goes back to the improper settings. It also disables my MSGTAG program.
How can I get them to stay fixed?
In Outlook Express,
under Default Messaging Programs
does it read:
This application is the default mail handler?
If not, click on the Make Default button.
If it does, do you have any other messaging program installed?
If not, download HijackThis version 1.99 and post a log here please.

We do not have any money, so we need a free solution to this problem. I would greatly appreciate any input!!! Thanks, Ethan

I have a HP 990 installed on a home network. While trying to print from a old windows program that uses default fonts it printed real small. HP tech support suggested installing the drivers from a 550. I did, now whenrver I try to access printer settings, it locks and only lists winfax and the 550. I have tried numerous ways to delete the 550 to no avail. Even re- installed win 98 se. The 990 is listed as a printer option if I try to print from word, and it prints, but if I select the 550 it locks and I get the error:

HI all...I have a RAMDisk and I changed the location of my Internet Temp files to go there...I went in to Internet options, and used the "Move Folder" to change the path. However, every now and them it gets changed back to the default location without me knowing...I have a clean system, but I think one of my cleaners resets it to default. My Question is this: Is there a way to lock the settings after I have them set up the way I want them? Thanks for any help!!!!!!
The settings are "locked". They're just being "unlocked" by whatever software you're running that's making the change. Either uninstall it or reconfigure it. Or manually change it every time you run that application.
Well, I have installed Windows 8 on my laptop, but was wondering if there is a way to lock the screen brightness.
The reason being is that family members constantly mess with the brightness and sometimes leave it at 100% when using the battery. I basically want to extend the life of the battery if it is possible by disabling or locking the screen brightness at a certain level.
Sure, you could specify a default setting for them in group policy (gpedit.msc), at the location below.
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Power Management -> Video and Display Settings
Hope this helps,

I would like to "lock down" the system restore settings after I set it up on my main hd. For some reason it gets changed by either my setup of "daily disk cleaner" or Ccleaner or some other program.

Usually these settings will not change after set unless you go back and change them again. What specific setting is being changed from what to what?
When I lock my computer, it goes to sleep almost immediately despite changing all settings otherwise. I have tried the following:
Change power settings to "never sleep"
Set screen saver to "none" and turn off the "wait until x minutes to turn off display" option
Hibernate is off in the registry
I've altered the registry to add the "Console lock display off" option and then set it to many many minutes as per (Power Options - Add )
I've altered the inactivity limit using gpedit.msc also as per the comments section of the above link
None of these work. I am running the Windows 10 Anniversary build. AMD motherboard with Raedon R7 graphics card.
Any ideas of anything else to try? I don't want to fully disable the sleep command.
I have this odd error with changing the lock screen that's been driving me mad and I really don't want to have to reinstall just because of this.
Going to PC settings shows this screen:
Note how the lock screen tile is empty. Clicking on it brings me to this:
So no lock screen image choices are being shown to me at all. I can click "Browse" and select a new image, but nothing happens. Choosing a lock screen slideshow does nothing as well.
I've tried many, many things, from resetting libraries and messing with the SystemData folder (in fact, that's the only way that I can change my lock screen, by replacing images in the SystemData folder.) Deleting the SystemData folder to try and generate a clean one doesn't work.
Any suggestions? Could anybody provide me with a clean, default version of the SystemData folder?
Hi everyone, thanks for looking.
Im running into a particular problem that I cant seem to find the reasons or the settings.
I watch HBO GO (i have a valid subscription) on my Windows 7 Home laptop and use an HDMI cable to connect my TV.
If I leave the close the lid power option on hibernate, I must leave the laptop open and, when I connect the HDMI the TV, it becomes my monitor and I view as the monitor and watch anything full screen no problem.
I change the power option on the lid close to "do nothing". When the HDMI cable is hooked up, if the laptop is open it uses the laptop display, if its closed it displays through the HDMI/TV. This is perfect and exactly what I want.
I can watch as the monitor no problem HOWEVER, if I choose full screen, I get gray borders and the "Full Screen" is not full and just centered.
I can not for the life of me figure out why and Im going crazy.
Does anyone know why the power option would have an effect on this and what settings I could change?
Many Thanks in Advance!!!
Check to see what resolution your laptop's display is at, what the external TV resolution is when you connect it to your laptop, and MAYBE what resolution the videos you're watching are. This just sounds like a resolution issue. If the TV is at a larger resolution than your laptop's resolution, change the TV's resolution to the size your laptop is at. Then try watching a video to see what happens. Hope this helps.
I don't care how many times I set my Windows Explorer viewing settings to Name, Ascending I have files that move around in the window. I'm getting real sick of having to either use F5 or back out of the folder and come back in. Just because I open a file doesn't mean it should move to the end of the list. That's what is happening though. Every single one of these files was created exactly the same way but not all of them do it. And not all of the files moving are the same ones every time. It's only occasion files that move and not always the same files, it seems to be random.
I just know this is getting to be extremely irritating. So if anyone can tell me how to lock in my viewing preferences and keep them that way I would greatly appreciate it.
That is my problem as stated above.

I don't want to have permission of this folder all I want to due is get it back the way it was to begin with. When I first click on Documents and Setting folder it said access denied right click went to properties ,click on it went to security tab to look at the permission went to advanced button click on it some how I did something when I got out of the folder, the folder icon no longer had a lock but a shortcut on it. When I went back into properties the next time and to security tab it no longer had the same information. On the screen was Objet Name C:/Documents and Settings info icon that said "You do not have permission to view or edit the object's permission settings". When you click on the advanced button lower right corner Three of the four tab which are Permissions, Auditing, Effective Permissions have the same info icon with the same sentence. The Owner tab screen has the Object name C:/Documents and Settings.
current owner which says "Unable to display current owner" Change owner to section has "Administrators (name of Pc\Administrators) and on the second line it has my name(name of the Pc\my name).
I did a restore before this happened and it didn't take of the problem. I'm able to solve this on my own I would appreciate some help.

I've just installed a "GateKeeper" (www.gkchain.com) which locks/unlocks the desktop based on my proximity to my desktop PC.
It works beautifully, but is a little odd when my display has gone into power saving mode whilst the desktop is locked... I approach the PC, and the desktop unlocks, and is ready for use, but the display stays blank as it is in power saving mode. I have to move the mouse (or press a key, perhaps) before I can see what I'm doing.
Is there some way to automatically bring the display out of power saving mode whenever there's a transition from locked to unlocked? I suspect this won't be possible, as there's probably no API for the power-saving mechanism. I certainly can't find any settings in power management that would control this behaviour.

You should buy your memory from the manufacturer of your computer.
