98 SE can't obtain IP address from cable modem

Q: 98 SE can't obtain IP address from cable modem

I have desktop with Windows 98 SE and I am trying to connect to my cable modem using a network card. My computer can't get an IP address from my broadband service so it assigns an autoconfiguration IP address and I can't get on the Internet.

I have tried two different network cards with the same result. I have connected a laptop to the cable modem and it works fine. I have also connected my desktop via USB to the cable modem and it works fine but I need to use Ethernet so that I can eventually use a router. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the network card with no luck.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem?

Preferred Solution: 98 SE can't obtain IP address from cable modem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay so I'm trying to connect my Xbox 360 to Live by bridging my computer's wireless connection. I've done this before for a friend in a different city and it worked fine, and I felt very proud of myself for doing so. However when I try to connect here, the modem won't assign my Xbox an IP address. I've been into ipconfig/all and tried to manually assign the same IP address to the Xbox but to no avail. Same deal with the alternate MAC address option. I've been trawling the forums for hours now and I've seen fixes for this exact issue but they haven't worked for me.

I've only got a very basic knowledge of IT and I need help. Who's keen?

What connections are in the bridge?

It looks to me from your ipconfig /all that you may have an ethernet port connected to the Xbox and some other connection bridged with the wireless.

I remember something about the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx ip addresses being an internal address that windows uses when it can't resolve the dhcp server sometimes. I had it once with windows 98 when we where having cable problems.

You may need to add another tcp/ip protocol for you nic, configure it to use dhcp for the cable modem.

Charter up my internet price and told me they would put me on a promo plan if I came in and got one of their modems. I picked up the modem (Cisco DCP3008) yesterday and hooked it up tonight. I had everything connected through my DIR 615 and Charter came up asking me if I was upgrading, etc... needing to verify and so on. I went through that and the last step it said it need to restart the modem to finalize. The modem restarted and came online, however the browser never indicated the processed had finalize. I call Charter, we wired the modem directly to my laptop and got a connection. I thought things were good. I hooked back into the router restarted the modem, all lights came on, started the router and no IP address. I went into setup and clicked clone MAC address and hit save, still no IP address after going to status, dhcp release and dhcp renew.

I reset the router back to factory settings and it still would not pull and IP address. The router worked great before the new modem. Any suggestions to get my router to pull an IP address?

Thank you.

Hi all -
we were happily getting along with our RCN cable Motorola modem and DLink wireless 655 until the last couple of weeks. The internet would intermittently not be available, without warning. First couple of times we power cycled the modem and router, and it worked, but then stopped being available altogether. I got some support from RCN, the cable provider (they own the modem and it's old, so naturally that was my first thought). I now have a new modem and the situation is exactly the same.
The error message that I get is that the IP address for the network cannot be found.

I got internet access by bypassing the router, connecting the modem directly to my (Windows XP) PC, releasing and renewing the IP address, and power cycling the modem. However, the internet still intermittently shuts down, and of course turning off the computer necessitates the whole procedure again. And now we have no wireless.

SOooo - should we assume it's the router, and a new one would solve our problem? Of do we just need to reset the IP address of the router? Or has anyone heard of this and maybe has some light to shed...???
Many thanks

Power cycling the modem is necessary when switching the device connected to it; after that there should be no need to power cycle it until the next switch.

Implies ISP, modem, cable or computer problem. If you have another Motorola modem you have LEDs that give a pretty good idea of what might be happening. And most modems have some LEDs. What are they telling you on the "shut downs"?

and of course turning off the computer necessitates the whole procedure again.Click to expand...

Shouldn't have to do anything but power up the computer. Can you try another computer? If the modem has a USB port can you try a USB connection?

Hi All,
I have Laptop Toshiba Satellite L775, windows 7. I used cable modem Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and it was working fine. Then I changed my ISP to Century Link and used their DSL modem and still everything worked just fine. Now I moved to another city and used same cable modem (SBG6580) and connected my business PC thru ethernet and it is working fine. The problem is with my laptop which I tried to connect wirelessly but coudn't so I tried to connect it thru ethernet but it does not even recognizes it. Funny thing is my hard wired computer has picked up same network name thru modem and is working fine both thru ethernet and wifi (this computer I am using first time with this modem).
My laptop find available networks and when I select my network with password, some time it says connected with limited access and some time "windows was unable to connect" message. I tried most of the solutions by calling Suddenlink and Motorola but no luck. I am wordering if it has to do anything with centurylink's DSL modem being used on this laptop before and somehow blocking cable modem?
Any help?

Have a hp mini notebook, WXP, using Wireless connection which has been running just fine for many days.
Have a number of other computers accessing same 2wire network with no problem; both wireless and cable

The mini sees the 2wire and receives strong signal but doesn't display it to connect to in the "available wireless network window". The window doesn't see other nearby wireless either which I think it can. I have tried a number of things via adapator and setting up "new" connections..........and the last time I had this issue I ended up re-installing WXP, but what a drag.

I did do one thing the other day that I wondered if it was stupid. While it was running on AC I did take out the notebook battery to clean it up a bit since it wasn't holding a very long charge.........I wondered if I had messed something.

Anyway, worse case I reload windows..........best case there is a simple task I perform to receive my address, presumably IP address.

I have a network setup so that a wireless router is connected to my westell versalink. This enables my network to be wireless. Everything works and I set it so that the versalink is the DHCP server and assigns IP addresses. However whenever I try to connect my laptop via wireless, it keeps saying unable to obtain IP address. So to get it to work I have to unplug the wireless router (turn it off) and replug it to make it work. Is there a way to solve this so I don't have to do that? I disable the wireless router to act as a DHCP server so there shouldn't be any conflicts with the versalink. However I did set the wireless router IP address to be within the range of the DHCP addresses...But this shouldn't cause any problems, right?

Anyway please help! I am tired of unplugging and plugging ARGH

Having a bit of difficulty with this laptop. I have tried everything to get it to connect to my friends network but it refuses to connect. Just get the message "Limited or no connectivity".

The laptop is an HP NC6120, with the wireless radio built in. It is running XP Pro and we are trying to get it to connect to his Charter.net cable modem/router. I have checked the TCP/IP settings to be sure that it is set to Obtain IP automatically. I've set a static address as well to no avail. When I had the static set I looked at the status and it was ending bytes but not receiving any.

The laptop will connect if we use the Local Area connection and a wire. No problems there.

I've tried running the /release and /renew from the command prompt. It will release ok but the renew command just times out after a while just like the Repair function does.

Tried power cycling the router a couple times as well as the radio on the laptop...no difference.

I don't think the problem is with the router as my friend told me that he just had some relatives staying with him and they were able to connect with their laptops no problems. He is using WEP encryption and has entered the correct key.

The laptop has not firewall running except for windows, and Avast antivirus...disabled both of those.

Tried reinstalling the wireless drivers...to no avail. I just had this laptop at my work and was able to connect it to the network there through wireless, and I even downloaded severa... Read more

A:Laptop will not obtain IP address

If he's using the passphrase option and not HEX keys for the router, that doesn't always work with different brands of equipment. I'd try removing all encryption from the router to see if you can connect, then use ONLY the HEX key option for the WEP key.

Best is to simply move to WPA or WPA2, much better encryption.

Make and exact model of the broadband modem.

I don't know if this is even possible, but I am trying to obtain the MAC address or some other type of number associated with my laptop so as to locate it. It was stolen last week so I no longer have access to it. I am curious if there is a way to find the mac address through the wireless router it had been connected to. I don't know if there is a database of all mac addresses that have accessed a router or what....any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Obtain MAC address for laptop

A router/switch does keep a table of all MACs it sees, I think, but the table is not accessible to users. But MAC addresses stay at the local router, the next hop it takes is based on the destination ip address. So even if you know the MAC of your lost laptop, you won't be able to find it using a MAC.

I will try to keep this short.
My current Setup:
Main Router:
Model : Bell Canada Connection Hub
SSID : Wifi 1
Security : WAP2
Gateway :
Subset Mask :
IP Range: to

Access Point:
Model : D-LINK DIR-820L
SSID : Wifi 1
Security : Same as Router (same SSID and password)
Gateway : Was but is now inaccessible
No Static IP Address (may be a problem)
DHCP : Off
The moment I turned DHCP off, I was not able to access the Config page of the AP anymore.

So here is my problem, all I wanted to do was being able to Port Foward, but behind two routers it gets pretty hard. So I turned my D-Link into an AP to be able to port foward easily.
My Mother's iPhone and my OnePlus One are connected to Wifi 1 without any issue.
But any "new" cellphone or laptop get stuck at "Obtaining IP Address...", "Authenticating..." or "Limited Access"

I also tried to rename the Main Router SSID to Wifi 2, still can't connect to either Wifi 1 (D-link) or Wifi 2 (Hub).
I feel like I have missed something, I can Factory Reset the D-Link as much as I want but not with the Bell Hub.

In my Port Foward I only have 3 open Ports:
WoL (wake on lan): Protocol UDP, port 9 on the IP address (Broadcast)
WoL2: Protocol UDP, Port 7 on the Static IP Address of my Main Computer : which is plugged in the LAN Port 1 of the D-Link.

I have reset my TCP/IP and still nothing. I have tried connecting to the router by hardwire and that also does not work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

If it connects to the network but not to the internet, try making sure the gateway IP is correct. I've always manually configured my TCP/IP connection IPs, and unless you have the correct gateway IP, the computer doesnt know where to get internet from. (The gateway IP will be the IP of your router)

OK, I'm sure that somewhere in the vast stores of this forum, my question has been answered. However, all the posts I've perused haven't been helpful. I have a desktop and two laptops, running windows xp, all connected via a wireless Linksys router. Up until a week ago, everything worked fine. Suddenly one of the laptops refuses to obtain an IP address or DNS server address automatically.

After having read other answers to this question, I formally withdraw my "beginner" status and humbly submit that I am computer illiterate.

I have tried the http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip fix, tried the Microsoft automatic IP fix, tried to manually assign the IP address, tried cold boot, tried ripping my hair out. . .

The odd thing is that in "Wireless Network Connection Status" the computer thinks it is connected. Says excellent signal strength, showing the numbers sent and received going up merrily. Just when I click "properties" there is no IP address, and of course, I cannot connect to the internet no matter how I hold my mouth.

HELP! And, please, be very specific in your instructions, because some of us don't know how to find "gateway" without a map. . .

Chino_Yu_Zeet Sorry, but you're operating under a misconception. A PC does not have a Mac Address. This address is a unique code assigned to a piece of networking equipment, not to a PC. So, if your PC had built-in wired networking, that would be one Mac address. If it also had built-in Wifi, that would be a second Mac address. These addresses are provided in bulk form to the manufacturers of networking equipment. In addition, HP keeps no records of individual Mac addresses for individual PCs, so there's no way they could provide you that information. And finally, Mac addresses can be "spoofed", meaning, if I had a piece of equipment from someone else, and I knew they had a way of tracking that address, it's a simple matter to "fake" the address on this piece of equipment so it no longer matches the original Mac address. Sorry, but at this point (1) there's no way to obtain that information, and (2) even if you had it, it would do you no good. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I have an hp laptop that currently runs on Windows 7. Originally, I was attempting to 'change adapter settings' within Network Connections located in the Control Panel. Upon running Network Diagnostics, I received the following error message: "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding." I utilized Google and search results directed me to Microsoft 'Support' with the url http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779064. The 3rd step on the webpage told me to use the Ipconfig command-line tool and input the following commands:

After attempting the 3rd prompt (ipconfig/release), I received another error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected." I have a netgear wireless router, not sure on the model but can find out if required. My xbox360 is hard wired to the router and my Laptop is connected wirelessly to the router using the internal wireless connection on the laptop.

The other half has a laptop too, for some reason her will not connect wirelessly, just gets stuck on a constant loop of ''aquiring ip address'' and does not get past this point. Laptop works if hard wired to the router.

can anyone help, how do i get ip address to assign.

A:Unable to obtain IP address on 2nd laptop

Is this related to your 2nd post here http://forums.techguy.org/networking/979399-xbox-360-probs-when-laptop.html
it could get confusing try to fix two problems which may be related together - so i have closed the 2nd post - to avoid confusion - for example if you upgrade the firmware on the router as suggested - but we dont know that here .......

can we see an ipconfig /all from the working wireless connected laptop
and then the same from the non-working laptop - also download and copy to the non-working laptop xirrus and lets see a screen shot

on the non-working laptop - what security suite do you have or ever had on PC - Norton, Mcafee etc

{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste

i have 3 pc's on a wired ethernet LAN, fronted by a 2Wire router and a cable modem. This has been working for sometime. Today, one PC stopped obtaining an IP address from the DHCP server, despite configuration settings to do so. Other PC's are ok. I got around it by forcing the IP address and related DNS settings in the TCP configuration, but why would this have changed ?? All the PCs are running W98SE. Clues ?

I've been desperately trying to connect my Xbox 360 to the wireless internet through a gateway on my laptop, but it can't assign it an IP address automatically. When I try manually assigning an address it still won't let me connect to the network. I've read that it might be the DHCP settings but I already have that enabled. If someone can help me I can post any required information you might need to help solve the problem.

I've got a single Windows XP machine connected to a cable modem. I am able to obtain a dynamic IP address from my ISP but I cannot Ping any other addresses (I tried by DNS name and by IP address.) I am also unable to get a reply when I ping ISP Gateway. I am however able to get a reply when pinging the loopback address ( Both Zone Alarm and the Windows XP firewall are disabled during all my attempts. I have used netsh int ip reset to reset the TCP/IP stack and tried a second network card but neither had any effect. The cable modem appears to be functioning properly and I assume the network cable is OK or I wouldn't be able to get an IP address in the first place. The ISP says the problem is on my end. Norton AV does not detect any problems. I've tried everything! Any suggestions?

Hello, Im not sure if this is in right category, but i guess it will be seen regardless

Anyway, I have an hp desktop pc, running windows 7, with high speed cable connection.. Im attempting to obtain a new ip address.. but when I go to command prompt, and type in ipconfig/release, I get an error telling me that "No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 2 while it has its media disconnected"

Im not sure what this error means. Can anyone help?

A:Media Disconnected - cannot obtain new ip address

The error means that with 'Media disconnected' you have no IP address to release.

I'm assuming that your real issue is an inability to get a connection. If that's a good assumption ...

What is the brand and model of your modem? What is the brand and model of your router, if you have a separate unit?

The inability to get a connection could be because you did not power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching the device connected to it, or a defective cable or a defective NIC.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

You may have to reinstall the driver for your network card. Go to the pc manufacturer website and download it using a functioning computer and save it to a CD or USB stick.

Ok, this may sound weird, but I want to know if there is a way to get the IP address used by someone sending me emails? Yes, in the end I want to find his address.

Long story short: this guy is trying to extort me, and I have filed a police report already, but I am trying to help the cops find his address so they can arrest him, since I don't know how much effort they are going to put into this investigation.

I know his general area of where he lives. And I have 3 old emails sent from him before he has cut off communication.

I *might* be able to get him to reply again if need be, but that would rely on some trickery from a new email address etc and would be hard to do, so any method using the old emails would definately be preferable.

PLEASE help me help the cops!

hello. i am 19 years old so i don't exactly have lots of experience with all this. I am having a problem which i could use help with. Lately i have been using the Microsoft virtual network adapter (im sure you've heard of it!)
I wrote a small batch file for the purpose of starting the network. (ill copy and paste it in at the bottom) now this program worked perfectly for about a month but now i cant get a device to connect to the network as nothing can obtain an ip address.
What i did to troubleshoot..
1. I changed the ip settings from dhcp to static.
this allowed me to connect to the network but i couldn't access the internet.
2. I checked the properties of the network from the control panel and it
shows that my network is sending packets but is not receiving any. I tried
running windows troubleshooting on the network and it tells me that the
network does not have a valid ip configuration. even though it is set
3. I tried typing the following into cmd "netsh interface ip reset"
in return i get;
"C:\Windows\system32>netsh interface ip reset
Resetting Global, OK!
Resetting Interface, OK!
Resetting Unicast Address, OK!
Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting Route, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Access is denied.

Resetting , OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action."

why does it say resetting failed followed by access denied?
i think this is the cause of "f... Read more

Hi -
I have an older IBM Thinkpad (365X) with Win95B. I have a Xircom Ethernet/56K Modem PCMCIA card, which I know works, since I can use it in other machines that I have.

I have DSL with a netgear router that has a DHCP server, which I also know works, since I'm using it to send this message.

I have reinstalled the adapter, all of the protocols, the client software, and the physical card in every way I can imagine, and cannot seem to get the machine to recognize the network. I checked the MS support site, and downloaded the Winsock2 patch. Didn't help. Still getting message about not being able to obain an IP address from the DHCP server. Most frustrating.

When I ping my own machine, I get an response with no lost packets. When I ping any of the 3 other machines on my local network I get a "request timed out" response.

If I hard code the IP address into the machine, I still cannot see any of the other machines.

I'm about ready to give up, so if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.

I appreciate any responses as I understand how busy everyone is.

He has been unable to connect to the internet for some time now. We did all the standard ts (reboot modem, contact service provider, change out cables ect.) to no avail. When we connected another lappy to his modem it connected no problem.

I took his laptop home, hooked it up to my modem, no connection, then i hooked it up to my router, no connection.

I tried to run ipconifg/release and got the following message

an error occured while releasing interface loopback psuedo-interface 1 : the system cannot find the file specified

which led me to this post

when i try netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

after the reboot still can't connect.

I have also tried what this post suggests to

So I have an Acer Aspire One notebook and I recently got a virus on it due to something that was going round on Facebook... Anyway, I tried everything I could to try and get rid of it, but then came to realise my only solution would be to restore my computer to factory settings.

I did this and now I can't get it to connect to the internet. It recognises the network and connects to the network, just with no internet access as it says that the wireless network adapter can't obtain an IP address... I have googled the problem and seen lots of posts about it, but they are all too technical for me to understand how to resolve it.

I am a 23 year old and have mild learning difficulties. I can understand what I need to do if it is explained in as simple terms as possible, but I don't understand a lot of the terminology.

It has always connected to the internet absolutely fine so I am not sure what the problem is.

I would really appreciate it if someone could offer me some help with resolving my issue.

Thanks in advance.
