unable to run system restore/help/msconfig...unable to open files with MSword

Q: unable to run system restore/help/msconfig...unable to open files with MSword

Anybody, help! Quite desperate as this is affecting my work.

Sometime ago, I installed AGV as there seemed to be lil bugs in my comp that Norton could not get. AGV managed to detect and delete these bugs, but not all problems were solved. Norton's subscription was up and I was still quite peeved about Norton's inability to help...so I uninstalled it. Since then, there were more problems...

1) I'm unable to run help from Start...or msconfig from Start/Run or system restore. The error message is that it can't find the file. Even when I go to explorer to double-click the file directly, it still won't run.

2) I'm unable to open ANY file with MS word or powerpoint. It would say that the file is unavailable. It would also prompt me to replace existing normal.dot file. I'm unable to do the detect and repair, it would say error 1706...I do not have the installation CD with me anymore!

3) I'm unable to run any online virus scan (Trend, Panda...) even after I made changes to the security settings to allow for ActiveX.

4) I'm tried to reinstall Norton, but it can't run. It says 'CFGWIZ.EXE - Unable to locate component. . . . cctrust.dll was not found.'

I do run Spybot, Adaware, AGV, Winaso regularly.

Please help...thanks!

I have made a scan and included logs from HijackThis and Silent Runners...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all, here's some more problems from me. For years now, I have not been able to set a system restore point. Yes, I know, bad. I haven't always been very computer-savvy (even less than now!) When I try to set a point, I get this error message: "System restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer and try system restore again." Restarting doesnt help and yes, I have it enabled and running and same goes for task scheduler. I have had malware problems that took me ages to fix, so I need this more than ever to run.

Next issue: I cannot open Microsoft HTML Help files. When I try double clicking nothing happens. I fiddled with the registry not long ago, when I thought I knew what I was doing and may have screwed this up in the process. Any pointers?

Thanks for any help.

A:Unable to set a System Restore Point and cant open HTML Help files

Mmm, there is malware that can make such changes, that remain, even after you clean up. But this kind of problems can also be caused by messing with the registry. You can try an XP roll-back installation. By doing so, all original windows files will be set back. You will loose all updates and service packs installed after your xp-install. For exemple, if your CD is XP home SP1, you will go back to that version and have to download/install all updates that came after that release.
However you will not loose any personal files/programs.
After your computer is started, just put the XP-cd in the CD-drive, run the cd and choose install xp. I dont know if this works when your computer came with a manufacturer-CD however.

My computer is no longer able to read or write to a DVD, either the one installed in my desktop or an external one. When I try to open a DVD I get a screen showing files ready to be written to disc with a desktop ini file shown. When I try to record a disc I get a message that windows was unable to complete the format. My first thought was to do a system restore to an earlier date, but system restore won't open. I have done deep scans with both Avast and Malwarebytes, and neither discovered a virus. I have tried opening the computer in safe mode, but get the same results there. Two days of unsuccessfully trying every solution I've googled and also purchasing regcure pro have left me extremely frustrated. I have a system repair disc made several months ago, but with the DVD player not working I'm facing a catch 22 situation. I'm hoping to be able to resolve this without doing a complete system restore, but in restrospect I would have probably spent less time doing that than wrestling with the problem as I have over the past two days. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

A:Unable to open system restore

If your PC can boot from a USB stick, then download Windows 7 Repair Disk x64 iso from Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc

Then create a bootable USB with rufus/yumi or any other bootable usb creator software.

If you use YUMI, don't put any spaces in filename, select Unsupported ISO (grub and ram) from the dropdown menu (scroll all the way down) and later edit the menu.lst file (there may be 2, just check which one has the Repair Disk entry) to be similar to the below:

title Windows 7 64-bit Repair Disc
find --set-root /multiboot/ISOS/<yourISOname>
map (hd1) (hd0)
map /multiboot/ISOS/<yourISOname> (hd32)

Hi there.

Last night, I foolishly forgot to disable automatic updates and when I woke up to use my computer in the morning, alas, a magnitude of drivers suddenly stopped working. I quickly turned to a system restore, but that's when things somehow got worse.

Now, when I boot up my machine, it can launch any base application included in Windows, such as Task Manager, Calculator, Explorer, etc. However, if I try to open any application such as Firefox or Skype, the process will appear briefly in the 'processes' tab in Task Manager, and then quickly disappear.

Thankfully, all my drivers appear to work as they used to, but I simply can't run any applications other than pre-packaged Windows programs.

I'm quite positive I don't have a virus. I fear that it may be a registry corruption, in which case I do not have the available discs to perform a system repair. I only have my OEM disc.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Dell Studio 17
Windows 7 64bit (SP1) (problem is with Windows partition)
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Problem Summary:
-Had a virus popup telling me I had to pay X dollars. Immediately closed browser and restarted computer.
-Scanned with Malwarebytes. Results found 4 threats, all of which I selected to remove.
-Restarted computer, after which I am now unable to open virtually any programs or files. Behaves like an account permissions issue
-Tried a system restore in safe mode to the most recent time when everything was working, but this did not solve problem
Detailed Description:
The other day I got one of those popups telling me that "I had been accused of illegal browing activity" or something, which I had not been. It said that in order to avoid dealing with the law, I had to pay so much money. I restarted my computer and planned on removing the virus.
After restarting I was still able to open files and programs; in fact I was a little behind on my firewall updates (mistake, I know) so I decided to update that first. Updated, restarted, everything was fine.
Then I ran a Malwarebytes full scan which detected 4 threats. I don't remembrer the names, but two were registry problems, one... Read more

All this has come from me installing microsoft security essentials I beleive? I can no longer get on the internet, system restore now fails and I can't add/remove programs either?? Malwarebytes full scan shows 0 infected files. . . Is there anything I can do. Only have limited internet access through my mobile phone. Thanks in advance!

A:system restore failing, internet explorer won't open, unable to add/remove programs??

The assumption by many...that the effects of malware can be easily overcome and the system returned to happier days...just is not true.

In addition to file damage which may have directly inflicted by the malware...there is always the possiblity that key files have been damaged during efforts to troubleshoot and remove known/detected malware itesm.

System manufacturer and model, please?

Do you have any Windows installation CDs?

Hello everyone, not sure why but I get an error every time I open the System Restore. I rarely have to use a restore point as I regularly maintain my computer and check for viruses and malware, but I would like to have the option just in case. When I open System Properties, and click the System Protection tab, I get this error and am unable to create a Restore Point. Attached is a screenshot and a DxDiag.txt. Any insight to this problem would be helpful, perhaps I have some windows feature disabled that I might need enabled, I am not sure. I recently did a complete reformat of my hard drive and a fresh install of Windows, maybe two months ago, and somewhere along the line I must have removed/disabled something I need for System Restore. Even third party maintenance software is unable to create restore points, such as TuneUp Utilities 2014, AVG Internet Security 2014, and UVK. I'm sure the fix for this is simple, I am just unaware of it. Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, need some help with a big problem I'm just experiencing.

Today I was going around my PC, messing around with some printer sharing when I came across a program while I was searching on the Internet called System Accelerator (or close enough). When I do just that, the same message comes up again and again.

I next go to the control panel and open up the system properties window. Under the tab System Restore I try to check the box: TURN OF SYSTEM RESTORE FOR ALL DRIVES. I do this to try to clear out the cache or restore points and I get the following message:

When I hit yes, i get:

So I restart and the same thing again.

Next I try to disable each of the 2 drives that I have, one by one. My OS is on C: and my storage disk is D: I try to disable D: first and get the following:

I hit cancel and select the settings for C: and get the following message when I try to disable system restore:

sounds like a corrupt profile. try creating a new profile for the user, don't delete the old one, and see if that works. but first, have the user go to another computer and see if his profile works there. if that doesn't work, the user may have a problem with permissions, did it ever work for the user? just had a thought, you need to get on the server and check the proup policy settings for that user before doing anything else, then try the other computer, then try the new profile. sorry for the confusion, it's been a couple of months since i worked on active directory.

Hey, yesterday I got a ton of trojans trying to download a movie and its the kind of trojan that is like "Antivir 2010" or something and it says that your computer is infected but that program is actually the virus. Well since I got that I ran Malware Bytes/AVG and Spybot and Auslogics Boostspeed/Disk Defrag, to try and get rid of any problems possible. I even tried to do a System restore but it says
"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details: An unspecified error has occured during system restore."
So I tried to run my computer in safe mode, and after I press F8 during start up, nothing happens. My computer video just seems to freeze and I can't see anything to choose the "safe mode" option.
On top of that, all of my internet browsers don't work besides Mozilla Firefox due to some issue with Proxy Servers.
It says this when I try and use Safari - "Safari can’t open the page “http://www.yahoo.com/”. The error is: “There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP).” (CFURLErrorDomain:306) Please choose Help > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message."

My computer seems to be generally running slower, some websites will not load, and i get 3 RunDLL errors when I start up my computer.

The loading timer is often showing and now the system restore won't work, the restore points are still there but when i try do the restore it is unable to do it. Also the windows add or remove programs doesn't work. I have a new printer now and it is working fine but i am just wondering why the system restore won't work. I previously installed Daemon Tools Lite, and somehow this managed to convert all my image files into Microsoft Photo extensions.

I tried to right-click, and open with another program. As a wild guess, I tried Internet Explorer. See attached image.

Even though I uninstalled Daemon Tools Light, this problem persists.

I would like to do a system restore, but the anti-virus software seems to be preventing this. I have Malwarebytes Premium, which I turned off.

Windows Defender is also on the system, and I turned that off as well.

So how can I get the System to Restore to a earlier time point?

I have a Compaq Presario desktop computer, Model number SR1620NX. It has Windows XP on it. This computer is quite old, but was working fairly well for basic things like Word, Basic Internet research etc.... It was put away for several weeks while moving, when plugged back in and turned on it stops at a black screen with blinking cursor on top left corner. Went to compaq website and the instructions there are to preform a system restoration by pressing F10 at start up and restoring system. I've tried that but at start up i press F10 but it will not go to system restoration.... i can press esc and go to boot menu and i can press F1 for setup menu but when i press F10 it does nothing. Anything will help thanks!

A:Unable to Restore System

The problem that makes it fail to boot will probably prevent recovery, too.

Chances are good that something came loose in the moving. Open it up, check the RAM sticks, cables on both ends, cards in slots, and anything else you see that could have come loose.

Hi all,
I have recently had to reinstall vista on my laptop but I have a problem reinstalling all of my files to their original location from an external hard drive. I used the vista backup and restore centre feature to backup the files, but I can't restore the files using the restore feature. the files are definitely on the external hard drive at different backup dates but I keep getting a message that the backup files can't be found-check your hardware configuration or restore from a different backup (0x8100001A). can anyone help please as nothing seems to be working although to my own admission I'm not very good with computers. why can't Microsoft make things easy for people like me. what could be simpler than a backup button to back up files and a restore button to restore them.

The other 4 she sent will not open. I get this error message:

Try one or more of the following
*On the file menu click open to open the document
*Make sure the document has a .doc extension

Sometimes instead of giving this message it gives me the "MSWord has done an illegal operation and will be shut down...."

I just recently installed the Windows 8.1 update earlier today. Immediately after the required restart, my computer has not been working properly. As soon as I log on, the desktop flashes back and forth from the desktop picture to the color of the menu background. It flashes back and forth pretty quickly and while this is happeneing I can't perform any functions. When I try clicking on the internet or anything else it is nonresponsive. I tried doing a system restore but after my computer restarted it said the restore was unsuccessful. I tried it again, as well as trying it from a different restore point but neither would work. I then attempted to restart my computer in safe mode but immediately got a pop up saying: "The instruction at 0x35f7649c referenced memory at 0x35f7649c. The memory could not be rewritten. Click OK to terminate the program." After clicking OK, the popup immediately came back and neither clicking OK or pressing the X in the upper right would make it go away and it would just immediatley pop back up and I could not click on anything else while it was up. Also while in safe mode, my desktop shortcuts and desktop picture were again flashing. I'm concerned I have a virus but not exactly sure how I got it or how to fix it. I have Webroot installed and it alerted me to a potential virus a couple days ago but when I tried to fix it, it said something about my product key expiring it and since it wasn't causing my any problems I ignored it. Hi all... well, after folks from this forum spent countless hours helping me resolve 'every known registry issue to mankind' found on my old HP Pavillion, I finally went and did the right thing...

I got myself a NEW computer!

Anyway, after installing MS Office 2007 in the new pc, I then used my memory stick to transfer "squillions of MSWord 2003 docs from my old computer to the new one".

I knew I would have to go through some sort of procedure to be able to "read" the MSWord 2003 docs in MSWord 2007"... but after a day and a half of "TRYING"... I have given up trying to figure it out and am turning to my friends on this board to guide me.

At this point in time, when I try and open a (transferred) MSWord 2003 doc in my new computer, instead of seeing text all I see are symbols and weird looking gobblygook!!!

I then click on my MS Office symbol up in the top-left-hand corner and click on "Save As"...and then Save As 1997 - 2003 MSWord doc".

I then close out the window and click on the "saved" doc on my desktop... it opens still in the unreadable "gobblygook / weird symbol" format.

I then click on CONVERT... but in all fairness, I don't know what I am doing and I am completely confused by all of this.

I tried "Googling the problem" to see if there was an A - Z path that I could follow that would solve things for me... but like 99.999% of A - Z paths, they've never A - Z!

I recently was assisted in removing malware/spyware from my computer. When I was instructed to turn off system restore and reset a new start point I found that System Restore was all ready Off and not monitoring and of my drives. I was unable to untick the box, receiving the following message:

"System Restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again."

I restarted 3 times and still could not change the setting.

I launched Super Anti Spyware and tried to fix the issue through that program but it was unsuccessful.

I then checked services.msc to see if it was set to automatic, and it was. When I clicked start I received the following message:

"The System Restore Service service on local computer started and then stopped. Some services top automatically if they have no waork to do, for example, the Perfomance Logs and Alerts service"

I only have my original Win XP CD with no service packs. I have updated to SP3 via Windows Update.

I have 2 hard drives: 1st is 160gig with over 80% free (Drive C) 2nd is 40gig partitioned into 2 20gig sectors (D & E) D has 20% free and E has 50% free.

Any assitance with this issue would be appreciated. I hope I have included enough info to get started.

I tried to do a system restore because I suspect something has corrupted. I tried two different points allowed in System Restore and both times the PC went through the process and then I get a message saying it could not restore to that point and that nothing was changed.

One of the issues I am facing is when I press crtl, alt & delete, the box that usually appears (Windows task Manager) doesn't anymore. All I get is a box that tells me what is running. (I hope this makes sense)

I don't know if this was an issue before installing SP1, but afterward I happened to notice it. I went to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > System Properties > System Protection. The list of available drives looked like this:

(F: ) Iomega HDD
(C: ) OS (System)
OS (C: ) (Missing)

The "missing" item is a little odd, but I then did the following:
Clicked (C: ) OS (System)
Clicked the Configure... button where it says "Configure restore settings, manage disk space, and delete restore points"
Chose "Restore system setting and previous versions of files"
Moved the "Max Usage" slider to 12%
Clicked Apply
And this error popped up:

There was an unexpected error in the property page:
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Please close the property page and try again.

I rebooted and tried again, with the same result.

Any idea what's going on?
