Completely blank screen after Windows logo, can't login

Q: Completely blank screen after Windows logo, can't login

Hi guys,
Let me start off with the specs ? this is a custom build:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OS
Gigabyte GAH61N-USB3 mobo
Intel i5-2400 CPU
4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 1333 RAM
1TB 5400RPM 2.5" HDD
MSI N620GT-MD1GD3/LP GeForce GT 620 GPU
Slot-loading CD/DVD?RW optical drive
Dell 2208WFP 22" LCD monitor, hooked up on DVI

The problem I'm having is that on bootup, everything looks fine and runs normally until the logon screen is supposed to come up. After the initial Windows loading logo, the screen goes completely black and then the monitor falls to sleep. Nothing will wake it up, and I can't connect via VNC either so I think the computer is hanging at that stage.

However, in safe mode, the logon screen comes up fine and I can login and everything works properly. In device manager, the graphics card shows up properly, but when I go to the screen resolution settings, it does not display the name of the card.

I have tried switching to VGA and that doesn't work. My BIOS is set to PCIE graphics primary, onboard graphics secondary. The onboard graphics work properly if I disconnect the graphics card. All the drivers for the graphics card are installed and were working before this started.

I have tried reinstalling the drivers but that didn't help. The only thing that temporarily worked was to disconnect the graphics card, uninstall the onboard graphics drivers, and then restart and reconnect the graphics card. However, after I restarted a second time, the problem reappeared and the screen went black after the logo.

I'm pretty much desperate here; reinstalling the OS from scratch is going to be way too much of a hassle, especially with the amount of applications I use. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Completely blank screen after Windows logo, can't login

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello! C:

My Satellite A500-1F7 doesn't start up anymore- when I try to turn it on, the Toshiba-logo appears, but a few seconds later, the screen goes completely blank. If I press F2 while the logo is still shown on screen, the setup menu opens. F12 works as well.

At first I thought my laptop just needed a new battery, since it had been urging me to change it for quite some time and the battery-led was out. Now I got a new battery - still doesn't work.
If anybody has an idea, what the reason might be or what I could do to fix it, please help me!
Sadly, I am a total computer-noob.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read all this!

Oh my gosh!
*Update:* The CPU fan suddenly turned on, so I decided to wait and see. After about an hour, a loading bar and "? Microsoft Corporation" appeared on the screen. Also, my laptop made very high-pitched bleeping noises. And now, another 37 minutes later, it seems to be back to normal.

Hey, need some help yet again!

Yesterday, I downloaded Mission Against Terror (New MMOFPS), and I downloaded it. Upon updating with the patcher, my laptop went haywire. It started opening up random IE windows, slow speed, etc etc.

I did a whole memory scan, and a malware/adware/spyware scan. There were several viruses and whatnot, but what is important are the files: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, you'll find it why later on. The anti-virus said that it had fixed/deleted everything.

So, I restarted my laptop, hoping that I'd get it up and running in safe mode for any further scans. Unfortunately, when I restarted it, after the windows 7 loading screen (which is right before login screen), a black screen appeared. With nothing at all. Not even a cursor. BLACK. JUST BLACK with NO keyboard access/mouse access. But, that's expected since it's BEFORE the login screen. It's the same with normal boot, boot that does that "last best used option" or whatever, safe mode, with networking, etc etc. All the same. Black screen.

Good thing I had WIN XP on my other hard drive. So, I booted up into WIN XP (where I'm posting this from), and did a FULL (NOT QUICK) system scan, to find the SAME Viruses YET AGAIN: SVC2.exe and 2008.exe, along with some other minor tracking cookies and what-not. Win XP (on second drive) is also having a few problems, like IE shutting down every second (using firefox now). Think this is a whole system prob. But, why? Didn't the antivirus-es fix it? I... Hello, I have a new GeForce 8500 GT video card and was trying to hook up the computer to the TV to watch movies. For some reason, it was not working and I tried several different configurations offered by the Nvidea control panel. Apparently I pressed the wrong button because my screen went blank and there was no picture on my TV. I tried "escape" and a host of other buttons but nothing worked. I rebooted and I have a picture on my monitor until the Windows logo appears. After that, the screen turns black and the light on my monitor turns from green to yellow. I think the video card is just sending the picture somewhere else, but I can't change the setting back again because my screen goes black after the windows logo. (I'm typing this on my laptop).

There is no problem with the video card because I was gaming on the system yesterday for a couple of hours with no problem. This problem only started when I tried linking the computer to my TV.

I am hoping there is a relatively easy fix to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I had a blue screen while using firefox with a couple downloads in progress and my system suddenly was restarted the typical memory dump, so I couldn't see the error codes or description.

The next time I restarted, the disk was checked and found errors in the files that were being downloaded. But the system freezed after the disk check finished.

After that, every time I try to boot Windows XP, I got a blank screen after the windows logo with the blue progress bar, just at the moment when the login screen should show up. I can't see the mouse pointer, the HD led shows no activity and the system does not respond in any possible way.

I tried starting in safe mode, but the problem persist and I can't never reach the login window. I've run many disk analyzers and antivirus from boot cds but found no errors.

Maybe this is useful information: my video card was having overheating problems and I had to "underclock" it to avoid random render defects, but besides that, everything was fine. I can confirm that the card hasn't died since I'm working in the same machine from ubuntu.

Any help would be hightly appreciated. Thanks.

A:XP Blank screen after windows logo, can't log in

Solution That worked for me:

I had the same problem and looked all over the net for a solution. I was determinied not to have to format my hard drive and re-install Windows. This is what worked for me:

1. - Make sure by entering the PC's BIOS that the CD/DVD drive is set as the first boot

device, otherwise the computer won't be able to boot from the CD. If you don't know how to

do that, visit the BIOS section of this site for the required information.

2. - Boot the system from the Windows XP CD.

3. - Windows setup will start. Use the option to press the R key to access the Recovery

Console. Select your Windows installation. It will be the only installation unless you have

more than one version of Windows installed.

4. - Enter the Administrator password when prompted for it. If you don't use one, just

press the Enter key.

5. - Enter the following commands as is:

CD C:\?system volume information\_resto~1?

6. - Choose the restore point (RPx) that you want to use by using the folder date stamps as

a guide and then enter the following commands:

CD RPx (x is the System Restore restore point that you chose)

7. - Enter the following commands that overwrite the existing corrupted Registry files:

COPY _registry_machine_system C:\Windows\System32\Config\System

COPY _registry_machine_software C:\Windows\System32\Config\Software

COPY _registry_machine_sam C:\Windows\System32\Config\S... Read more

When I went to turn on my laptop this morning and the startup after windows logo was super long. It ended up stopping at a blank screen so I decided to restart the computer manually and that did not solve the problem. I was given the option to do a system repair and so I did. That also failed because it said it could not fix the problem. Safe mode is also not an option because it also freezes and never makes it to the desktop. Ctrl alt delete doesn't work either during the blank screen. I believe it's virus because I foolishly clicked on a shady link sent by my friend on Skype, who then said it was a virus. I'm currently doing a system repair and right now it is checking the disk for errors. it has been running for about 4 hours. Are there any options for me? Thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105 installed with Microsoft XP. Recently I have turned it on it it goes to the Toshiba screen then the Windows XP screen (with the loading symbol) which takes quite long, then the screen goes blank and is unresponsive to everything. The only way I can shut it off at this point is to hold down the power button. One last thing the only time I have any access is during the Toshiba screen where I can hit F2 for system utilities or F12 for boot menu. Any help/advice/instructions would be appreciated.

Try hitting F8 as soon as you see the windows screen, and try last know good configuration or safe mode. Have you installed any new hardware or software lately? remove any disks, card or anthing attached to the computer. If you can get it to start on safe mode, try a system restore.

Hey guys, I've been looking at this for a while at work and I'm hoping you guys can help me out here. I'm a bit stumped.

I've got a computer displaying a BSOD after windows logo and before login screen. I tried safe mode and initially thought it was DeepFreeze failing because when watching the drivers load for safe mode, the BSOD happened right after loading the two DeepFreeze drivers. eg. "LOADED: DF.sys"

I took an image of the hard drive from a linux boot disc with DD at this point before I started making changes because there is software that isn't around any longer and we wouldn't be able to get back.
So, I got in touch with DeepFreeze Support and was able to manually thaw the computer (by replacing the two deepfreeze drivers with the thawed versions I got from support) and the problem continues after that.

At least, the system is thawed now so I can be certain that anything we change in it is effective and not going to be reverted.

The exact error text on screen is:
"STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process system process terminated unexpectedly with a sta
tus of 0x00000000 (0xc0000001 0x00020bd8).
The system has been shut down."

This doesn't look like the "normal" blue screen I'm used to. There is nothing saying that it is saving a dump or anything like this. I've tried startup repair many times and I have also booted up in PartedMagic and confirmed that the partition is marked as active. While I had it loa... Read more

Alright, so after a successful installation of Windows 10 on my home PC, I recommended my mother upgrade to Windows 10 on her laptop in order to fix various issues she'd been having on 7. She messaged me after the upgrade had finished to say that her computer wouldn't start, and so I asked her to bring it over to my house to try and fix it.

Turns out, the problem isn't that the system won't start at all. The problem is, after the entire boot process has finished (The point at which the Lock Screen would normally appear), the system "hangs" on a blank screen with no mouse cursor. This can be bypassed by forcing the system into sleep mode (via the power button, which fortunately was set to do that) and then waking it back up, at which point the Welcome screen is displayed and the computer then continues normally.

I looked this up and there was apparently a similar problem in the preview builds, which was fixed by an update. So, my first reaction is to update Windows. I ran Windows Update, installed everything, and was prompted to reboot, so I did. It was a similar story: After the Windows logo had disappeared the screen stayed black. I then put the system to sleep and woke it up again to see "Windows is finishing updates" and a percentage; after it had finished, the Lock Screen displayed normally.

So, what exactly is the issue here, and how do I fix it?

I've just finished building my first computer but it seems that I messed something up.

After I finish installing Windows on my SSD (from booting Windows Creation Tool on USB) it works fine for about 10-30 mins. But as I'm about to download drivers the screen goes black and restarts, where afterwards only the wallpaper and task bar is visible (no cursor and very limited keyboard function). The task bar icons still get highlighted but I can't view anything, including the task manager, although it does open (i.e. only the icon appears on the task bar, but the window doesn't appear on the desktop). Once this happens and I reboot my PC, the screen goes black/blank after the Windows logo. The black screen happens every time I try rebooting hereafter (i.e. I can no longer log in to my PC no matter how many times I reboot.).

I've tried reinstalling windows, but the exact same things happen (within 10-30 mins, screen goes black, comes back with only wallpaper/task bar visible, black screen occurring every reboot thereafter). I have no idea if this is a software or hardware issue.

I've tried both installing Windows on my SSD and HDD but the issue is still the same. I can still access the BIOS since the black screen occurs after the Windows logo loads.

Hopefully someone could offer any suggestions, or should I just bring the PC to a professional to take a look?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi all! I'm brand new here.

This is a new build from about 11/15. System was rock solid until about a month ago when I had a weird string of BSOD at login. I went through a bunch of hoops and finally got the system back to normalish, although I never really figured out what the problem was..

However, since then I intermittently have a delay just before the login screen shows. Most of the time it's fine, when it's not, it manifests as a black screen with just my mouse pointer hanging out in the void. This delay can be anywhere from ~30 seconds to ~5 minutes.

Any help is appreciated. Let me know what additional info you might need from me.

Stuff I have done:

Updated all drivers for my hardware that aren't marked as beta (there's a couple of those for my mobo)
Ran chkdsk (no errors)
Ran sfc /scannow (no errors)
Changed my DNS server settings and disable IPv6 (I forget what led me to believe that could be the culprit)
Took the overclock off my RAM

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things.. anyway.. thanks in advance for any help.

Boot to safe mode, set your display for a generic vga, low resolution. Restart in standard mode, see if you get display. If so, start then, select correct display driver and try, step by step, to get back to where you were. If, somewhere along the line, you get the blank screen again, you should have an idea what happend.

Hi everyone,
The system I'm using has this new problem where the screen goes blank (black, sometimes grey) right after i log into windows. Sometimes it even shows a bit of the desktop for a second or two beforehand. In the event viewer, there are three consistent errors that show up every time with eventID 7001, and say
"The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start."

The computer runs in safe more, and I'm attaching the BSOD report. I can't generate a system health report since i'm in safe mode. The machine is a windows 7 64bit SP1, and it's a work machine in a lab so I'm not sure how old everything is.

Intel core 2 quad CPU (Q9450), Nvidia 8600GT, 8gb RAM.

I've tried doing a system restore to a few days ago when it was working, but that didn't help. I haven't reinstalled Windows since it's a work machine with multiple HDDs and a RAID setup, and i'm not too excited to dive into all that quite yet.

Any help would be awesomely appreciated!

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum, just registered recently and hope to find some answers ...

My problem:

So i had my latpop on last night whilst i was playing cards with my famuily just listening to music, when all of a sudden it died and brought up the dreaded blue screen and started running tests "Pre-boot System Assesment" and since then my Laptop hasn't been working.

When i turn my laptop on now it loads the Dell logo then says "windows is loading files ..." as if it's a new laptop, then loads some more before heading on to the Windows 7 default blue screen (with a faint green flower) as where i would log on ... But it freezes on this screen and nothing pops up, but i have control over my mouse!

I've tried everywhere and everything but to no avail, such as diagnostics, tests, BIOS changes and am at my wits end! I've tried to perform a system restore (can't find my original disc) but can't get onto safe mode or anything

Any solutions would be more than welcome, and thanks for taking your time to read this

Ran into some odd computer problems today, any assistance would be fantastic.

PC / OS / Browser Info:
Dell Optiplex (bought from DiscountPC.com)
P4 1.99GHz, 512mb RAM, 40GB HD
Win XP (OEM) ver 2002, SP2
Firefox v3.0.3
IE v6.0.2900.2180

Overview Problems:
1.) Windows login password shows "IIIII" instead of the encrypted dots to indicate a password
2.) Random Outlook emails appear completely blank
3.) Google homepage on IE is completely blank, other various pages do not fully load, but work in Firefox
4.) Button text on some apps (Auslogics defrag) are completely gone
5.) Various system hangs

The computer worked fine until today. It was original purchased as a frugal replacement for an existing broken office PC.

Methods tried:
1.) Defrag/registry defrag, auslogics apps missing button text
2.) Ran AVG Virus scan (buttons missing text), to no avail, wouldn't run
3.) System restored to yesterday, and then to a week ago, to no avail
4.) Visited various tech support sites that suggested to run various REGSVR32 commands in Start -> run to no affect
5.) Ran IEFix app which was suggested might bring back broken IE components
6.) Explored Device manager, nothing is apparently wrong with any devices

This is about the extent of my IT knowledge. I would much prefer a way to fix other than formatting - I'm not even certain a format would fix the problem.

Any suggestions? Any more information I could provide? Have no idea what it could... Read more

My problem is similar to the well know Windows 7 Black Screen as referenced by Prevx, though different. When I boot my Windows 7 computer, the login screen appears as always. Following entering the password for default user,
the screen will give the impression of login, but the final result is a plain black screen with the cursor only. The black screen appears indefinitely and the Windows GUI never appears. The only available option from booting in normal mode with this is Ctrl-Alt-Del
(Task Manager). From analyzing another computer with Windows 7 Professional, my Task Manager is missing the following user processes: dwm.exe, explorer.exe, and taskhost.exe. Additionally, it is missing the following system processes (possibly irrelevant):
spoolsv.exe and wmiprvse.exe.
When I attempt to start a new process using Windows Task Manager, an error message will appear saying “Windows Task Manager has stopped working” and forces you to close Windows Task Manager. This includes starting
any process such as cmd or explorer.
I attempted to boot into safe mode.
The result was the same as above. Then I attempted booting into safe mode with command prompt. This showed some hope. Following authentification from the login screen, the command prompt appears with the same blank screen with a cursor behind it. Initially
I attempted to run msconfig.msc to run a clean startup. System Configuration Utilities opens briefly then displays the error same... Read more

I really don't want to have buy a new graphics card.
Thanks for your help in advance.

I have a laptop that seems fine except the screen will not come up. When I turn it on, the Dell scree with the BIOS version etc shows, then the XP logo splash screen...then nothing. The screen goes dark. I can logon (becasue I know the keystrokes by heart) and the windows startup music will play. The hard drive light is flashing...I wait a bit, do CTRL-ALT-DEL and hit the "S" to shut it down. The logoff music plays and the computer shuts down. So I know as far as the computer knows, the desktop is loading. I just can't see anythng.

I can start the computer in safe mode. I have reinstalled the video driver, ran anti-malware programs of various sorts, ran msconfig and deselected everything in the startup folder...I used the Windows CD to run the repair console and did a FIXBOOT option. Anti-virus software is up to date. So, far nothing has worked.

Any ideas???

In Safe Mode, have you tried doing a System Restore to correct the problem?

Start > run: msconfig > Launch System Restore. Choose a calendar date prior to the problem?

Offhand I'd say it might be a problem with the refresh rate for the monitor screen -- but this would be unusual on a laptop. In Safe Mode you can try right clicking on the Desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > Monitor.

Make sure that you have checked "hide modes that the monitor cannot display". Typically the refresh rate should be 60 hz

Also, as an alternative to Safe Mode, have you tried selecting "VGA mode" from the f8 boot menu?

And make sure all your Power options are set to "never" to ensure it is not trying to go on standby.

We have had issues with people stealing computers. However thieves sometimes do not steal XP computers with our company logo on the locked screen/logon screen. It might be because of the branding which seem more professional and they maybe are afraid of being tracked by our company. So, how can I customize Windows 7 like I could by e.g. changing the desktop background of the .DEFAULT user in registry on XP?

A:Company logo on Login screen?

Please take the following steps to replace Logon UI logo.
1. Click Start, type Regedit and press Enter
2. Navigate to
3. Change value of OEMBackground to 1.
4. Now navigate to %windir%\system32\oobe, create folder ?info?, double click it and create another new folder ?backgrounds?
5. Now place your desired logon file into %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds
6. Rename the file to backgroundDefault.jpg. (Please NOTE: Images must be less than 256kb in size).
Hope it helps.

Hello all.

After a bunch of Windows updates last night we are no able to log in a significant amount of computers, this also happens in safe mode where upon pressing control alt delete for login it turns to a blank screen with just a mouse cursor.

Reading up on google, someone said it was a DCOM setting in Group policy, but they didn't say exactly what.

It seems to have happened to a number of other schools in the area as well. Likely to be a Windows Update issue. Any ideas?

Hello all,

Newbie here with limited (if any) knowledge of how PC's work (so to speak).

I've read similar problems on here (my apologies for repeating the post if it's been answered a million times) but i need answers in really basic English not techie...

I have a MESH Elite A800 Power (that's what it says on the sticker) which has been working great until now because when i turn the power button on at the back and then switch it on (with the button on the front) i hear the fans inside start and the hard drive makes a noise (no beeps though) and a green and a orange light come on but that's it...
Nothing appears on the monitor (it stays in stand by mode).
I've tried 3 monitors and it's the same for all of them (all 3 were powered separately with their own plug). Neither of the disk drives open when i press the buttons either.
I took the side panel off to see if there was anything obvious but i don't know what i'm looking at. When i turn the power switch on the back of the PC on a green LED lights up on the main board, then when i switch it on, the fans on the PSU, the Processor (?) and 'another' fan all start spinning, and the hard drive makes a noise (as i already said).

It seems as though there's power to the PC but it's not doing anything to the monitor.

Any idea what it could be?

Let me know if there's any more info required.

Thanks in advance.

I tried to update new drivers for my AMD Radeon R5 GPU and had to stop in the middle, thus partially installing the drivers. I went to install them again and left them to install. I came back later and there was nothing but a blank screen. I restarted the PC and the HP boot logo came up and afterwards, there was absolutely nothing. What do I do?!

Hi there,

I've read as many articles as I can find on blue screens, but mine seems to have progressed to the next stage - completely blank! I can access 'safe mode' but can't get any icons. The problem is as folloows, can anybody help please?

-I scanned an email attachment with Norton Internet Security, but it failed to pick up malware.

-A whole series of trojans were downloaded followed by a series of blue screen messages.

-I tried to resolve the issue by downloading the free version of AVG because Norton was frozen, but after a few minutes of running on the computer it crashed completely.

-I now have a completely blank blue screen. I can enter 'Safe Mode' with or without a cursor, but no icons.

-Is there any way or product that will help me recover my PC from this situation, or will I have to re-format the drive?

-Can I recover any programmes/software and/or files from my corrupt hhd?

-Would it be feasible to install a new hhd and use that to scan the old one for viruses?

A:Completely blank blue screen - help!!!

Hi lesgreenwood, and welcome to TSF.

I can see why you tried to use avg but to be honest 2 av's on the same system spell: recipe for disaster, and Norton being involved probably made it a whole lot worse.

There is only one way really, to get this sorted out and here it is.

We recommend that you read this article? "IMPORTANT - 5 Step Process: Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Hi! Any help would be much appreciated. Recently I installed Windows 10 on the laptop. Soon after the device began to run slowly and freeze frequently. Two days later, I turned off the device for 24 hours. When I came back to turn the computer on, the screen began loading with the HP icon but soon after went blank. This happened every time the computer was turned on. I then left the computer off for three days in the hope that it would fix itself which obviously did not occur. After looking up various possible reasons/solutions I tried pressing the f8 key whilst the HP logo was displayed. An error message appeared on a blue screen saying that it had run into an error (UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME) and would restart itself. The screen went blank after this and remained this way for over an hour before I turned it off again. I tried this several times and once it came up with a black screen after the HP logo that said preparing for automatic repair and then went blank again. The Notebook came with Windows 8 already installed and the update to Windows 10 was performed digitally.

Hi, Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ) and run the tests on the Hard Drive. Post back with the results, including any error codes that may be generated. Can you also post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information. Regards, DP-K
