Preferred Solution: This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown next time it becomes active

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.

Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?

Thanks

I am using windows 7 home premium and have it set to install important updates. If there were available updates both important and optional the notification icon in the task bar would appear. I wouldn't go away until after the updates were installed. Now I have 6 available updates and the notifcation is not active. The action center is not showing updates are available ether. I have to go into windows update myself in order to fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Welcome to sevenforums, jaxx.

I believe that the notification only works for important updates, and possibly for updates you haven't looked at. If you have responded to the notification and looked at the updates but decided not to get them, it may be re-setting the flag to tell you that there are updates.

Hi,
I've been fighting with some sort of redirect virus. Checked my computer with Malwarebates in Safe MOde, Normal Mode, etc. It did find some viruses but removed them and nothing is present anymore. I also checked my comp with BitDefender online scanner, SuperAntiSpyware, HijackTHis. They don't find any viruses. Computer works fast, although aftre all this checking and removal I found that sometimes when I click two windows too fast it locks and I have to reboot it by reset button.
Now the annoying part is that when I do Google search it still redirects me to various random sites. I also found that when I disable active scripting it does not do that, but then I cannot view YOuTube movies, etc.
Is ther a way to analyze and search for scripts that cause this. I assume it's just some stupid script that gets activated when I'm on line, because none of the AV programs I use finds any viruses anymore.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi everybody,

I am new here and actually after I checked different contributions, I liked the place, it's really helpful, and I hope to be a permanent member. Well, I am new to VBA, and I just got a macro that runs on active open sheet, then I need to run the same macro, but this time on more than a file/ sheet (actually it's a big number, like 1000+), closed and already saved in a folder. I would pretty appreciate if anyone helps me to add the necessary code ( which will direct the macro to : focus on a specific folder in a specific location (e.g. E:\myfolder) , then run on every excel file in that folder, and to save every file before close , doing that until the last file in that folder .. that's it .. Any help?

Many thanks

Hello, I am trying to find out what kind of network connectivity is typically required between 2 Active-Active data centers? (Keeping in mind the global traffic management would be required between the 2 sites and all the traffic would typically be coming to Site A first though Akamai).

We currently have a GigE (provided by InterNap) coming to our data center.

Thanks,

My 2 towers are both using Yahoo Mail, FIREFOX 2.2. In tower one the Yahoo icon is in the START menu which I dragged onto the desktop. It also appears on the PROGRAMS list. For tower two none of this is true/ How do I find the missing icon for the Yahoo mail so I can drag it onto the desktop? I NEED to be able to open it without using FOX, which has and continues to have issues lately. Very annoying. I need a solution! Apparently I cannot "OVERWRITE" the program nor can I find a way to create an icon. Generaly I would remove and reinstall a program. In this case I cannot do that. It is NOT in the programs list, and www.yahoo.com automatically displys YAHOO MAIL. From there I can sign up as a new used. When done I am asked to sign in, NO icon. YET AGAIN! Help me!

This has driven me nuts since I got Win 10.

A:Active Desktop Icon removal

Hi Rob welcome to TSF

Try this:
Right-click the Active Desktop to display the shortcut menu, and then click Properties.

Click the Web tab.

To disable an item, clear the check box next to the item. It will still be there if you want to use it again.

To delete an item, select the item, and click Delete. This will permanently remove the item from your system.

Click OK.

Hi

How can I use transparent icon-text on my desktop, while using Active Desktop?
This can usually be done by checking "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in System -> Advanced -> Performance-Settings, but this does not work while using Active Desktop.

This isn't a serious problem (don't even use AD), but I was just wondering if it was possible to do this, without downloading miscellaneous graphics-software or altering the registry etc.

Hi Here is a similar posting at the Microsoft Community site: (Win 7, 2009 Toshiba laptop) "Desktop shortcuts activate the lowest right icon - very perplexed, even reinstalling Windows didn't fix it, need real expert help please..." In other words, clicking on any desktop icon will activate only the bottom of the screen, shortcut-linked program. That icon is already blue too. I am refurbishing an old Acer Travelmate 2420 w/new install of XP sp3, exactly the same problem, also the mouse pointer won't move pane sliders enuff to click on downloads. I think that this is a hardware problem perhaps overheating? (because we have different machines and OS so it's probably not software, and also everything was fine while playing CloseCombat until I was 20 minutes into the game). Any suggestions as to what and where I can find a diagnostic tool? Thanking you-all in advance. Cheers!

So i woke up today and my laptop was closed, assumed windows 10 updated something again by itself.

The weird thing is that after like maybe then minutes, while using firefox, firefox stopped responding, and i couldnt open task manager either.

Then after a restart i also went into wow which after like 10 mins again stopped responding, then alt tabbed to firefox which was working but in like 30 seconds it stopped responding as well, and task manager couldnt open either

I assume it was my bit defender anti virus that wasnt in game mode so i put it in gamemode after the 3rd restart.
In that one i opened task manager from the beginning, as expected wow stopped responding in like 10 mins again and i alt tabbed to task manager and killed the process. The weird thing was that WoW was consuming 0% of cpu before i killed it, after i pressed end task, WoW closed but it would still remain on the task manager, then task manager also stopped responding.

I am not sure what could be causing this, i am trying a full systems scan with bit defender to see if it is a virus or something, anyone has seen this problem before?

EDIT: after trying out rescue mode to scan each drive, one of those gave me an error that it wasn't there or something.

Hi,
I have a relatively fresh installation of Windows 10 but it often gets very laggy.
- Any window takes a while to open
- Even typing on the keyboard has a delay
- Programs not responding

I did the usual checks such as
- Antivirus / Antispyware
- Drivers update

I noticed that my C: SSD disk is often at 100% "Active Time". There are some processes writing/reading from the SSD but that something the SSD should handle without freezing the entire OS.

Any ideas what's wrong?

In a standard Windows PC, the active partition would be C, or System Reserved if you have that partition. Do you have both of those partitions and is either of them marked "active"?

The active flag has nothing to do with data.

I have Win 10 Pro x64. I recently upgraded from Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 to Bitdefender Total Security 2016. With both versions, I notice that whether booting cold or a restart, sometimes Windows Defender is active (can be accessed thru the Control Panel icon and updates itself etc) and other times it is inactive "The application is turned off and is not monitoring your computer". Same thing with the Windows Firewall.

Is this a known 'bug', maybe with Windows Defender or Bitdefender, that allows Windows Defender to enable itself, seemingly randomly when starting/restarting the PC. My understanding is that the 3rd party AV should permanently override and disable Win Defender.

I presume that this is not a good thing and conflicts between the two will result in problems/instability.

Hi guys

Need some help with a really frustrating issue I've started to get on my system in the last couple of days

Issue

Very poor response times to doing anything on my system. C drive activity is at 100%. I've seen the activity queue at it's worst up at 50, but seems to be regularaly around 5-10 when I want to do anything.

If I leave the machine alone the process queue eventually runs down, but as soon as I do anything at all, it goes mental, and the computer becomes unusable.

I'm no stranger to this rodeo, and have been trial and erroring some stuff already.

Disabled Windows Search, no change. Disabled Windows Indexing, no change. Disabling Windows Defender, no change. Disabled Superfetch, no change. Disabled BITS, no change. Disabled Onedrive.....which had a positive effect for around 5 mins, then back to 100% activity when trying to do anything. Uninstalled Google Chrome [as this was taking a life time to load and then kept crashing out on me]...again seemed to have an improvement, but then straight back to 100% disk activity.

I've scanned system with anti malware bytes [when I was eventually able to load the page in a browser] that came back clear.

Scanned with Windows Defender which was all clear also.

Chkdsk also came back fine. No bad sectors and no disk errors

I've taken a few screen shots from system performance which I'll tag onto this thread.

I'm literally at a loss now as to what it can be.

It's a clean install of 8.1 pro 64bit that was done 3 weeks ... Read more

I have no problem run 2 game windows in 1 screen of almost any game i have tried so far.

2.Simply hold right click on the Game exe and move the mouse. A window will pop-up. Select ''Create Shortcuts Here'' .
3.Make 2 Shortcuts this way and Rename them (for example Player 1 and Player 2).
4.Right click the Player 1 Shortcut and go to Properties. On Target paste this command at the end of what is already there: '' -AlwaysFocus''

5.Right click the Player 2 Shortcut and go to Properties. On Target paste this command at the end of what is already there: '' -AlwaysFocus -ControllerOffset=1 -SaveDataId=2''
(With the Space at the beginning of command and Without the '' ).
6.Open Player 1 and Player 2 as administrators and make sure they are not on full screen. You should be able to run both and make a Lan-game on 1 PC screen.
7.If you are going to use gamepads and game supports gamepads then make sure you only use player's 1 gamepad on Player 1 Screen without touching 2nd gamepad. Then click with mouse on 2nd Player Screen to make it active and use only the 2nd Player gamepad. That s... Read more

Hey guys, my PC keeps having this issue where it stays at the maximum active time whenever I play my games such as Borderlands 3 or games I used to be able to play like Monster Hunter. Hell, I was able to run both games at once without any PC lag at all. Now for the past 2 months were lagging insane and its been driving me nuts. I don't know if I need to replace the processor, hard drive, or graphics card. It all happened once after coming back from waiting out and it was very upsetting to see I could barely run things at multiple times (Browser, Game, Discord). I also have a suspicion that it could be my Windows or something was installed badly on my computer. If anyone knows what this issue can be I would gladly love to explore this issue before sending it in for a diagnostics to check it. I have Windows 8.1 Pro. I will mention it's not activated, but I don't think would cause a hard drive issue.

I can't find any other posts with this problem but it may just be that search engines struggle to search for "0" or "0%".
One specific workstation is running very slowly however CPU usage and memory usage are fairly low.  Usually I find the HDD is the bottleneck and whenever the PC is running very slowly "Highest Active Time" is at 100%.  On this PC however
it never moves from 0% even though the Disk I/O is varying between 0KB/sec and 15MB/sec.
There is only one physical disk in this workstation and it's a standard roughly 500GB HDD with less than 100GB used.
I ran Malwarebytes yesterday and it found over 600 threats 2 of which were malware.  That could well be unrelated but I thought worth mentioning.
Running chkdsk found no bad sectors.
Perhaps the problem is with the resource monitor not the disk and the performance issue is unrelated!
I'm starting to think I'd be better off wiping the disk and doing a fresh install of windows but I don't want to do that and find out the hard disk is the problem.
Any other idea's would be appreciated!

Hello I?m facing an intermittent 100% disk active time with 0 kB/s read or write speed with my ProBook 450 G3 running on Win 10.During that time the notebook is not responding. This effect always lasts for exactly  60 s (visible in the task manager) and after that the hard disk is responding again. It seems like some sort of timeout is happening after 60 s before it returns to normal behaviour. Sometimes the 100% active time occurs every few minutes and sometimes I can work for hours without interruption. So far, I was not able to trigger that effect. A Google search on 100% active time  returns a lot of suggestions like disabling superfetch, windows search and the intelligent background transfer service. None of it solved the problem. The drivers of the hard disk (Toshiba) and the SATA controller (Intel) are up to date. I also have already reinstalled Win 10 which did not help either. I have another issue with that ProBook. I do not think this is related to this problem. New to Windows 7, like it a lot, but I have one thing that is driving me batty.

On the taskbar, in the notification area, I have many of the standard Windows system icons, volume, power settings, wifi, hidden icons, etc. When I try to access the options in those popup notifications. the notification disappears so quickly that I don't even have time to get my cursor on it. Maybe one in five tries I can get on it before it folds, but for practical purposes trying to use those icons is hopeless. It seems like the 'puter or the OS is just too fast.

I found one crackbrain suggestion to take out the battery (I have a laptop) and to press the power button a few times, and them replace battery and boot. Naturally, that solution didn't work, but I tried it anyway. There is also a suggestion about using the Ease of Use to set a time for notifications.... that doesn't do it. The notification area doesn't play by those rules. 5 seconds? I can't get 1/5 of a second.

I found a few instances of people having the same problem, but no solutions. Anyone have an idea how to solve this? Thanks.

Hello Gill, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if one of the options in the tutorial below may allow the notification messages to stay open longer.

This is on an HP HDX16 1370us laptop

About 8 months ago I kept getting BSOD's and several programs indicated that my hard drive had failed. I replaced the hard drive, but was unable to reinstall windows due to this hard drive light issue which I will describe below. I used linux for the past 8 months since it worked fine with no problems, but I am tired of it and want to go back to windows.

Right now I'm trying to get a fresh install working properly. The installation was a normal speed about until it went to load the desktop for the first time, although in the past it has started freezing during the installation process. Basically here are the symptoms:

- On boot, the hdd activity will be normal until it gets to the end of the windows logo with the black background, about then the hdd light comes on solid
-I've only been able to boot into windows normally once, and that was on initial installation.
- In safe mode it was still very slow, like right clicking on the taskbar and opening task manager, then waiting 5-10 minutes for it to load.
- If I boot into the recovery manager and run chkdsk from command prompt, it has no problems accessing the hard drive normally.
- When I turn it on, it takes about half an hour to get to the login screen. So far it's been 50 minutes since boot and I still don't have a desktop. I did have welcome screen for a few minutes, now I have a black screen with the cursor. The cursor is not frozen.

I don't think it's a hardware problem since ... Read more

A:Solid hdd light, disk 100% highest active time, very slow

So of course I managed to fix the problem shortly after posting this. I had to boot into safe mode with command prompt and manually change the power settings to high performance. As soon as I did this it started working perfectly. Anyone know why?

Hello Technet forum.

I've been having some very frustrating issues with my computer, had to format disks and reinstall windows 7 ultimate from the CD a couple months back (bad solution to a corrupted memory problem) and since then everything was slow or average but manageable.
But lately, it's CONSTANTLY freezing at startup, everything is ridiculously slow, even opening files is terrible.
Looking at performance manager i can see highest disk activity at 100% most of the time even without internet connection or any program running since startup.
Disk Queue length also reads 3~4 on average.
One other thing of note is Resource Monitor shows Storage having Logical Disk as D: C: which might be a problem.

Disk D has 99.9 MB and i have no idea what i is, no files or folders when i click it.
Disk C is my main drive with 930 GB.
After searching around for a long time, i suspect this might be the computer trying to read a damaged sector, a bad disk drive configuration , wrong boot order or, at last, the hard drive is dying.
Can you help me figure this out?
Sorry for no pictures, account hasn't been verified yet.

Hello, I need some help with annoying pop-ups and alot of other viruses claimed to infest my computer. The reason for the problems seem to be that i downloaded a "acrive-X" file without knowing fullt what it was, and i now get pop-ups with the following text: "Windows has dectected an Internet attack attempt... Somebody's trying to infect your PC with spyware or harmful viruses. Run full system scan now to protect your PC from internet attacks, hiojacking attampts and spyware! Click here to download spyware remover for total protection." & a security warning saying that i got a "worm.win32.netsky" on my computer. and i've tried to download fixes for it but they haven't found anything.

Download Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

when i click(1 time) on the icon on my taskbar, the programme opens up, normally i need to double clicks. Why is this happening? Someone help me thanks.

A:Click (1 time) on taskbar notification icon and it opens?

Hi GradeAbra,

The taskbar (the Quick Launch Menu) is programmed to start programs with only one click even if you have everything else (your folders, start menu, desktop and basically all other items) configured to use double-clicks. The taskbar cannot be changed to double-click - that's the way it is programmed and it is behaving normally if that is happening - you don't have a problem.

If you find you actually prefer this, you can change the rest of the system to use single clicks instead of double-clicks using the following: Single Click option.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Hello all,

Recently my computer has been going extremely unresponsive for extensive periods of time, due to what appears to be, according to resource monitor, 100% highest active time on my hard drive ( Shown here).

The periods of the system going unresponsive occur randomly and last around 10 minutes, or up to an hour. During these periods the hard drive appears to sound louder and making noise in a pattern that follows the graph in the images above (louder when the blue line hits top, silent when bottom).

Today i got a message from 'Intel SMART' telling me a hard drive was failing. The computer is still in warranty for a few months although i have no idea if this is a hardware or software issue.

Is there a way I can tell if this is definitely a hardware problem, and if its actually a software / windows 7 issue, what's wrong?

Hi

We have three PCs connected on a network. One is dual boot with Win7 and Win10 (very recently sorted with help from Gregrocker) whilst the other two are both Win7 only with no System Reserved partition. What I want to do is to have both latter PCs with a System Reserved partition and remove the boot files from the OS partition. I know most people seem to want to go the other way but I believe there may be advantages when the time comes to remove Win7 and use Win10 only.

I've been going through the motions of creating a System Reserved partition of size around 100MB (without actually doing it - I can't use Bitlocker and I use TrueImage to backup/restore). However, it goes a bit further than just creating the partition as I have to get the boot files into it. I believe I have to mark the partition as active which would mean the OS partition would become inactive. I would then have to do three repair installs to get the boot files into the System Reserved partition.

I would appreciate it if someone would confirm this or put me right where my thinking is in error. I look forward to hearing from someone on this.

Thanks
Tracey

I'd be curious to know what you think the advantages to this would be "when the time comes to remove Win7 and use Win10 only".

You appear to be on the right track if you want to go through with it, although I can't recall anyone else who wanted to do this. You might investigate the EasyBCD tutorial on this site which is used to copy boot files---typically in the other direction as you mention. I'm not positive, but I'd assume it could be used to copy them in the direction you prefer.

I'm getting this same problem as this person:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproperf/thread/4e33c8d9-fc3d-434b-8dd0-29965d1aa0a2
Except that it seems to happen at random.  While playing a game, browsing the net or when it's just sitting idle.

Hard drive light goes solid, the blue line (% highest active time) in the resource monitor disk graph stays peaked at 100% but
relatively little or no hard disk activity.

My mouse is also usually still responsive.
Some apps will continue to work, but if I click on them they will usually become unresponsive, same goes if I attempt to click on the Windows Start button.  If I'm playing a game, it will stutter or freeze and a .5-1 second sound clip will continuously loop
until it's done (meaning the hard drive light is no longer solid and blue line is no longer peaking).
It is also the same for me that occasionally the OS will freeze completely and I will need to hold down the power button to reboot, but this is usually more rare.

I've checked the Event Viewer and there are no errors that coincide with the problem.
I've run chkdsk and no errors were returned.  Same when I ran Memtest86+ to check RAM, no errors.

My stats are:

-Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1
-Intel Core i-7 960 3.2Ghz

-Corsair Dominator 12GB TR3X6g1600C8

A:Windows Randomly Freezes when Resource Monitor Disk Highest Active Time Maxed Out

Your problem is with your HD. 10 bucks says you're using a "green" drive as your MBR drive. Another 10 says it's probably a WD. It's functioning but needs to be replaced. It's fine to use the existing HD as a storage drive, but not as your master boot record
drive.

To fix this issue you're going to install a new drive, create a system image, and restore the system image to the new drive.
•Go buy a non-"green" drive. Make sure it's
at least as large as your existing MBR drive.
•Using Windows Backup, create a system image. When asked if you want to create a repair CD, select YES.
•Copy the system image backup to an external drive or a thumb drive.
•Install and connect the new HD. It
must be at least as large as the existing MBR drive causing the problems.
•Insert the Windows repair CD you just created in your CD tray.
•Power down the PC. Disconnect all internal drives except the new drive.
•Boot the PC and F-12 until you get a prompt.
•Instruct it to boot from CD.
•Once Windows is loaded, select Repair Your Computer. You'll have an option to load drivers. At this point drivers are probably not necessary.
•Select System Image Recovery.
•When completed, shut down and reconnect any other internal drives.
•Reboot. et Voila. Problem gone.

Microsoft allows an image restore to a new drive as long as no other hardware's changed. If you happen to replace your mobo at the same time, y... Read more

Good day everyone! I got this P50 in late 2016 and have Win7 on a 256GB 950 PRO accompanied by a WD Blue 1TB SSD. 950 PRO is on PCIe 3.0 x4 while WD Blue is on SATA 3.0 (6Gbit/s). CrystalDiskMark reports that (for at least sequential RW) both drives are performing nominally.  However, it frustratingly isn't the case with this WD SSD. It is horrendous whenever a video/audio file on it gets opened in Windows Media Player or other programs like DaVinci Resolve. The SSD seems to freeze up and takes the program where the file is open down with it (i.e. the program becomes unresponsive). Checking Resource Monitor, I see disk active time spikes whenever these freezes happen. These lockups don't happen with the 950 PRO. It's been a year since I first encountered this problem. Anyone have an idea? Is there something I'm missing, or should I avoid certain products in the future?
