[SOLVED] Outlook Express: VERY slow to open or, worse, does NOT open up at all

Q: [SOLVED] Outlook Express: VERY slow to open or, worse, does NOT open up at all

XP/Outlook Express

Recently, Outlook Express opening up VERY slow, even worse, it does NOT open up at all. However, if I close and restart XP all over again, OE opens up as usual, not slow. This happens so often that it's very frustrating and puzzling me so much.

My question is;
Is there a way to open OE in normal speed?
Or, 'Is there something wrong with PC/xp?

Your help is much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] Outlook Express: VERY slow to open or, worse, does NOT open up at all

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: [SOLVED] Outlook Express: VERY slow to open or, worse, does NOT open up at all

Don't use OE myself but on a search, came across this Inside Outlook Express - Errors, Bugs and Problems - Error Messages and this OLEXP: Outlook Express Stops Responding or Does Not Start which may help.

As the day progresses, I find that OE 6 takes longer to open emails. I've deleted temp files, history etc and have used CC and it's still slow (over 1 min). It is much faster when I start out. I'm using IE 8 with XP. Any suggestions? Thanks.

OE6 is taking way too long to load up, like 1-2 minutes. I have an XP2500+, 512 RAM, ASUS A7N8X mobo, and XP Pro. System has all critical updates from Windows Update. The email servers used in the primary account just switched to requiring authentication and SSL secure connections. Is my Outlook Express out of whack or could the new servers just be slow (they had a tendency to slow at times in the past)? I am considering reinstalling Outlook. Other than that I am clueless...

My Outlook program seems to take longer than usual to open now. Is this usually just due to the number of emails (with attachments) that I have on file? or is there another way of determining why it's slow?

Also, our daughter has been downloading images onto the hard drive very frequently lately....what is the potential that these will eventually slow things down for everyone who uses the computer? We're suggesting that she start saving these kinds of files onto CD's to keep things running fast.

Any other "speed education" tips you can provide would also be appreciated.

Thanks again! I'm so happy to have found you guys......you outdo any and all of the other tools we have for helping us with troubleshooting on the computer!!

When OE6 is open and I click on one of my folders within it, say Sent items, Inbox or another folder I have created, it doesn't immediately open that folder in the viewing window - I just get a blank white window. At this time I can hear (what I presume is) the hard drive sound. Sometimes it takes 10 seconds or more for the messages/emails to appear but most of ten it takes a few seconds.
It never uesd to be like this.
I also have a problem dragginging a message from the open folder to another one on the left. It seems to hang when i try to do this.

Can anyone offer me any advice/help as I have searched the web for months for an answer to this without any luck.

Many thanks.

A:Outlook Express 6 Folders are very slow to open

Hi medion06
Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

It sounds like you need to empty your default folders.
Save messages you want to keep in folders of your own creation, in Outlook Express.

Start with the Inbox and move all the messages you want to keep to other folders.
Keep the Inbox empty. Delete messages you no longer need/want.

If you want to keep the messages in your Sent Items folder, create new folders and name them like so: 2007 Sent Items, 2008 Sent Items etc.
Divide up messages from the Sent Items folder and move them to the new Sent Items folders.
After cleaning out the folders, Compact the Message Store for Outlook Express.
First place Outlook Express in Work Offline mode:
File > Work Offline
Close Outlook Express and restart the computer.

Open Outlook Express and immediately Compact folders:
File > Folder > Compact ALL Folders
It is best to not do anything else on the computer while this process runs.
When the compaction process completes, close and restart Outlook Express.

Take Outlook Express out of Work Offline mode:
File > Work Offline
Let us know if that makes a difference on opening folders and dragging messages to other folders.

All of a sudden pictures sent as attachments to e-mail messages can't be opened. Microsoft's Office picture manager appears fleetingly on the screen before the unopenable "open white envelope" shows up. It has an .eml extension, but won't allow me to change it to a .jpeg.

I think my husband may have very recently downloaded, by mistake, Microsoft's SP 2 patch. He won't say. But those annoying red flashing messages have stopped appearing in the bottom right corner of my screen.

Help and thanks

A:outlook express won't open pictures. They appear as an open envelope.

If you do mean Outlook Express and not Outlook, then try this:

Click Tools> Options> Click the Security tab.
Clear the check box next to Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus
Click Apply and OK.
If you need to, you can also uncheck the box: Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail

I get the usual error (file does not have a program associated with it) when I try to open a pps file in outlook express on my Dell 8300 running winxp home sp2. I have tried every fix I could find but still does not work. Under HKCR\powerpoint viewer.slideshow.11\shell there are only 2 sub folders , print and show. On my Compaq running the same system there are 3 sub folders , open, print, show and I have no problem with pps in outlook express. Seems I'm missing the open command on the Dell. Is there a way I can add the missing open file in the registery? I have tried reinstalling powerpoint veiwer 2003 and 2007 with the same results.

Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express message store. Your computer may be out of memory or your disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x80040154, 14007).

Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.dll could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly.

I know those two error messages had been previously addressed which is why I figured out as much as I have.

I am pretty sure that the problem is that when a Microsoft update ran (and since I had changed the default for programs to D:\ ) it created a OE folder in D:\. That folder shows that it is empty. My question is how do I change OE to read the files that are in C:\ and how do I make sure that OE looks for the message store (812 MB) in D:\ (which is where I had moved it because of size). C is 15 GB with 2.38 GB free. D is 91.7 GB and there is 71.9 GB free.

This problem crops up in different forms from year to year. See forum thread "Can't open Web links from
Outlook to Internet Explorer", last post 01 August 2012. A number of complicated solutions have been
proposed on some forums. Here is a simple one that worked for me using Windows XP.

Firstly I have fixed this problem on my computer and am not asking for help - for the moment, but I believe
the actual problem goes deeper than this and could recurr and would be interested to know more.

However, for those having trouble now my problems started yesterday when on shutting down the computer I
got a message " Vprotect application has encountered a problem and needs to close" I cancelled this and
the computer shut down. No worries, it's bedtime.
However, after restarting and using email I found that links to Internet Explorer browser would not connect.
The computer froze. I tried many times and many ways - same result.
With the Task Manager - Ctl Alt Del - I ended the email or browser program concerned and got back to the
desktop with computer still running and no longer frozen.
I shut down with no more messages about Vprotect and restarted ok, but links still would not open, just froze

On browsing the internet I learned that Vprotect is part of the AVG antivirus program and AVG toolbar which I
use. I don't know whether the problem is an AVG fault, but I just disabled the AVG toolbar and the problem has
gone away.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, so please advise if not.

Recently, I noticed that "sometimes" I cannot open a JPG attachment in an Outlook Express email. By "sometimes" I mean one day it works fine all day, other days it works off and on all day. There does not appear ro be rhyme or reason to it.

I have tried clearing all temporary files, expanding temporary file storage size, etc.. Nothing has solved the problem. I use Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to open JPG files. If I save the files, they always open OK. In addition, I can open the files from within the email with MS Paint.....it appears to be only Windows Picture Viewer that fails. When I click on the attachment, the hour glass appears for about 1 second, then nothing happens.

I am running XP Home SP3, Outlook Express 6, and IE8 with all updates applied. Any help appreciated.

I've been using Outlook Express 6.0 since it came out. Suddenly all my messages have started opening "minimized" on the taskbar. This includes new mail, old mail, deleted items - anything I try to open. Same thing happens when I "create mail". The message shows up minimized (on the taskbar) where I can then "maximize" it and write my letter.

Also the "restore" option doesn't work.

Any ideas on how to get things back to normal would be appreciated. It's "workable" as is, but the extra step is frustrating.

Last week I set up a new Dell for my mom and got her on the 'net. The only problem is that the Address Book button in Outlook Express 6 will not work. I can access Address Book from the start menu fine and set up her contacts that way. Whenever Outlook Express 6 is open and I click the address book button however, the contacts at the lower left and the address book button itself just flicker. Very strange. The computer also has Office XP installed from her business and wanted to make Outlook the default email handler, she wanted to stick with Outlook Express so that is how it is set up (if that would have had anything to do with it). My guess is not as I also run Office XP with OE6 and my address book opens fine from the email program. Any ideas or past experience with this would be a big help.

During 2006, my PC was using Win98-SE. In December, I began having problems booting, (it would only boot in safe mode). (BTW - this followed a seize-up viewing a Video Professor CD).

A tech at a computer show installed a new hard drive and Windows XP Home. The old hard drive (partitioned as C: and D: ) became a slave unit as D: and E:. This preserved valuable company data but meant numerous applications had to be reinstalled.

I reinstalled Internet Explorer and Outlook Express and I receive E-mail OK, but I have a serious "nuisance" problem. Attachments of type ".doc" will open automatically using Word, but ".pdf" attachments will no longer automatically open via Adobe Reader 7.0. I get an error window saying there is no file association for type ".pdf" and I should set one using Folder Options.

What is somewhat strange is that the path in the top banner line of the error window does not really exist. It will say "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\...", then a machine-generated 8-char alphanumeric folder name. However, this only exists down as far as "Local Settings." That folder has two subfolders: "Application Data" and "Temp", but NOT "Temporary Internet Files".

A:Solved: Solved: Outlook express won't open

Does the program work ok now? The cause of that could have just been outlook experiencing a strange shutdown therefore leaving components in the computer's memory. When the utility is restarted this could cause a mess as it thinks it is already running then terminates itself. The reboot corrected the issue as it clears the computers memory completely which then of course lets outlook function normally. I would not worry about this as i myself have had it happen from time to time using some software.

I've tried uninstalling then reinstalling OE and IE6, but still have same problem.

The identity login could not be started. Some components are either missing or incorrectly configured.

Outlook Express could not be started, It may not be installed correctly. Make sure that your disk is not full or that you are out of memory.

Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly.

I had no problem with email before the issue with the viruses. I would be grateful if anyone could and would shed some light on this problem for me. Thanks in advance.

I am using Windows 98 R and have Microsoft 2000, Internet Explorer 6 on my computer. That's the basics, now to the rest of the story.

Since Friday (Nov. 19th) afternoon, I have been unable to open Outlook Express. (I also have Eudora installed so I can use that to send/receive e-mail though -thankfully!)

The chain of events Friday went something like this, leading up to being unable to open Outlook Express - which by the way gives me a message that Outlook Express is unable to open because MSOE.dll could not be loaded.

First off, I deleted the ad-aware program I had been using and replaced it (on the advice of a close, relatively computer literate relative) with Spybot. I did all the required (or thought I did anyway) steps. Somewhere in this process though I managed to (inadvertantly) delete the Address Book that should be there for Windows 98.

I left the house for about 2 hours, to run some errors - having my antivirus program running/checking when I left. On my return, the AV program had completed and the system was ok so I logged on to the internet and tried to open Outlook Express and that is when I started to get this nasty message.

My first response was to do a search on Google for MSOE.dll and look for any other poor souls who had similar problems to mine and see what recommendations they received. Through one of those responses, I saw that the addy book was shown as a problem if it was deleted -however, this message pertained to a Windows ME user -noth... Read more

Verify that Show hidden files and folders is checked, if not place a checkmark there, click Apply, OK, to save and close.

Start>Find>Files and Folders,
in the Find Field, key in: *.dbx
be sure to include the asterick.
in the "Look in" field make sure your "C" drive or main harddrive is selected, click on Find Now.

Once the Find search is done, locate the Folders.dbx file.
Rename the Folders.dbx file to Folders.old
(if you have more than one Folders.dbx file, rename all of them; Folders.old, close your search window and attempt to open Outlook Express.

If Outlook Express opens,
check this area, Tools>Options>Maintenance tab,
Remove, if there, the checkmark for Compact messages in the background click Apply, OK.

Let us know if this works or not.

As for Ad-aware and Spybot, I have both on several machines, I just don't run them at the same time.

The only way I can open OE6 is to force Identity at startup, open a new identity with nothing in it then switch to my identity with all my messagages and accounts setup.
I've already created new identity and imported messages and account info the new one.
I've disabled MSN messager.
I've cleared keys HKEY_CLASES_ROOT/CLSID/FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541/InproServer32 & LocalServer32.
I've emptied Temp folder, temp internet files, reset defaults in IE.
When I try to startup in my setup identity, OE does not respond.
What else can I do?
Running WIN XP.

If you have a windows xp cd, put it in your drive & go to start\run & type in the box sfc /scannow then press enter, this will repair any corrupt system files & may work for you.

If this doesnt work, save all your emails/addresses/settings & reinstall outlook express6, again you will need your Windows cd.
The easiest way to do this is to search your pc for a file called msoe50.inf when you find this file, right click on it & choose install.

Hope this helps

I have not been able to open Outlook Express since last sunday. When I click on the icon I get a "ping" noise but nothing happens does not attempt to open. I have tried reinstalling windows and downloaded updates from Microsoft. I have done full system scans and there is no
virus. Have deleted cookies. Did a System restore.
I have tried opening from programs and from right click and open but I still get a ping noise like it is blocked. When I go to email properties /shortcut/the Target is greyed out and has "email" where it should have "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".

Do you have any ideas that I can try? It is driving me crazy.

What version of Outlook Express do you have? You can try hitting Microsoft's site and downloading the latest version of Internet Explorer (which includes an upgrade to OE).

Good luck!
