X270 - Some Fn keys are not working

Q: X270 - Some Fn keys are not working

Strangely, some of the FN keys of my X270 are not working. Only the special functions, I still can use the standard function of each key without issues. Also, the On Screen Display is not working, both for FN functions and for CapsLock. I'm not sure if the issues are related or not. Here is a list of the current status of each key:- FN + ESC (Fn lock): OK- Fn + F1 (Mute/Unmute speaker): OK- Fn + F2 (Decrease volume): OK- Fn + F3 (Increase volume): OK- Fn + F4 (Mute/Unmute microphone): Not working- Fn + F5 (Increase brightness): OK- Fn + F6 (Decrease brightness): OK- Fn + F7 (Change display output): Not working- Fn + F8 (Wireless on/off): Not working- Fn + F9 (Control Panel): Not working- Fn + F10 (Bluetooth on/off): Not working- Fn + F11 (Keyboard settings): Not working- Fn + F12 (User-defined key): Not working- FN + PrSc (Open the Snipping Tool) : Not working- Fn + Space Bar (Keyboard backlight): OK I'm using Win7 and I've already downloaded and installed the software below, without success:- Lenovo Communications Utility Program for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Notebook - 3.1.23.013 - Sep 2017- ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Laptop - 6.26.8815 - Jun 2017- Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad - 8.86.2507 - Dec 2017 Does anyone know how to fix it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Everyone

Started typing on my internal laptop keyboard today and reliased that mainly keys a b and n were not working.
So I decided to clean them by taking off the key and white holder, then used a cloth to clean all the dust etc.. both under the rubber button and around it. This still didn't work however, so I then decided to uninstall and reinstall the driver as well. However this didn't work either.

Its probably best to try and buy a new one off e-bay, but before I do this does anyone else have any suggestions?

Also interesting, a b and n seems to be a popular combination of keys for other toshiba laptops that don't seem to be working... (Using a USB keyboard atm to type which works fine)

Thanks

Hi everybody,I have an incomprensible problem with my X270. I use an external monitor in 4K with an HDMI cable (my dock don't have displayport). But the 4K output isn't working all the time. When I turn on the computer sometimes I only have 1080p resolution and I can't change it (for 4K, I can for less like 720p). But sometimes, it is working fine. Even if I don't change anything. For exemple, I do an update, restart my computer and after it, without changing anything, I only obtain 1080p. If I restart 3 hours later, I can have 4K. (I am on Windows 10)But, I also have Debian on my computer but I prefer W10 when I use my 4K monitor because Debian isn't perfect with 4K. But on Debian, the computer can offer 4K on the monitor everytimes. There is no problem to detect 4K on Debian. So I don't understand why it is not working with W10.Any of you have the same problem or a solution?

Hello,Having a problem with my laptop keyboard where the hotkey function buttons have suddenly stopped working as they used to. Pressing any of the hot keys results in an f1-12 rather than the previous function of changing volume, toggling keyboard lights and changing brightness etc. This happened around the time of me installing some new drivers for an audio interface so may be related to that. Ive tried going into the BIOS and toggling the hotkey option on and off, and installing hp quick launch software but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in advance - C. I'm using a fairly new X270 (about two months old) with Windows 10, machine type 20HNCTO1WW.  Yesterday, as far as I could tell, my Bluetooth suddenly stopped working.  By "as far as I can tell", I mean that my only reason for using Bluetooth is an audio receiver connected to my stereo; so I don't have any other devices to check it with.  (Before I go any further, I'll add that the receiver still works fine with my three-year-old Yoga.) Basically, my music stopped playing.  I tried restarting my computer and reconnecting to the device.  In nearly every instance, my X270 was unable to reconnect with the receiver.  In the two or three instances when it did reconnect, it played music briefly--no more than thirty seconds--and then abruptly stopped. The only thing out-of-the-ordinary going on during this time was that within a few minutes of the problem's appearance I got a notice from Lenovo Update stating that an update was ready.  Lenovo Companion shows that it installed - Intel Management Engine 11.8 Firmware - 7 [32,64]/8.1/10 [64] - V.11.8.50.3425- Intel 8265 Wireless LAN Driver - 10 [64] - V.19.71.1.1 As for how far along these updates were when they were announced, who knows?  The process by which Windows alerts me of its updates is still a bit opaque to me (I haven't had too much time to investigate it yet), and I'm not sure how far that might extend to Lenovo's updates. Anyway, if anyone has any insight or ... HiI recently applied the Windows 10 April update to my x270. Everything worked okay however Windows Hello and the fingerprint reader no longer work. I have checked the Biometric settings in device manager and the Synaptics WBDI (SGX enabled) device is showing the following status"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31){Operation Failed}The requested operation was unsuccessful". I have checked everything is enabled in the Bios and also uninstalled and resinstalled the device from Lenovo. Has anyone else experienced this issue. Is it a driver incompatability with updated windows 10?Is there an updated driver somewhere please? Thanks in advance

I have a Commodore Laptop (Argentina) and all the keys that have a FN function attached to them do not work as their normal function any more - this happened after lending the laptop to my kids....

I think it may be FN lock, but can-t find any way to unlock it.

Any ideas please.

Many thanks.

A:Keys that have FN functions on them not working as normal keys

Check the Manual on the model's Support Downloads webpage for key combo to unlock: http://www.ehow.com/how_4968993_unlo...ey-laptop.html

Try updating or reinstalling the hotkeys driver from the model's Support Downloads webpage. Driver Install - Device Manager

While there look also for any downloadable fixes for these key functions or related.

It may also be disabled in msconfig>Startup. You can google the listings there to see what they're for. Normally you only need your AV checked and the rest are freeloaders, but some models require hotkey software to be running at startup if it provides anciliiary functions like backlighting, function toggling, etc.

Hi, Try the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

NOW that Dell KNOWS about the above keys not working correctly... does anyone know if they have found a solution yet?? My warranty expires in Nov and I've been dealing with this (real pain in the ***) problem for a good 2-3 months now and my hubby wants me to buy a new laptop (certainly NOT another DELL after THIS problem) instead of trying to fix this Inspiron 11, model # 3147. Well... it's only 10 months old and still under warranty. I REFUSE to keep wasting my money on laptops and want to have this one repaired under warranty.
I ALSO noticed in the last few months, there is an exorbitant amount of heat coming mostly from the left underside bottom, so much so... that I have to use a lap desk in order to keep my lap from burning up. This might be contributing to the problems of the keyboard. I just want to be able to use it. My only fear is... I get it repaired and then it fails again for the same reason in a few months.... then what???
From reading ALL the blogs on THIS problem... I'm loosing confidence in Dell's products.

You might try System Restore back to the day before you first updated the software. I would also try the keyboard on another computer to make sure the keyboard is okay. And while at it, try the other keyboard on your system.

I think that this is "by design". For example, when using some programs, e.g., 'NOTEPAD', pressing 'F3' repeats the "Find" function, i.e., looking for the next occurrence of a string that you specify, while 'FN-plus-F3' invokes the "alternate" functionality, e.g., play/pause, or volume up/down. Does your keyboard have a 'FN-LOCK' key (compare to "shift-lock" for typing ALL IN UPPER CASE), to "lock" those 12 keys to their "alternate" association?

Hey @mohanj2787, Welcome to the HP Forums! I read your post and wanted to reach out to help you! In your post, you had said that currently your HP 15-ac149tx Notebook will not install the AMD driver.  Here is a link to your product page. You system came with Intel 5500 HD graphics not AMD. So you need to uninstall the AMD from your Device Manager.  You could try: In the Device Manager, click the arrow next to Display Adapters to expand that category. Right-click on Graphics and select Update Driver Software. Choose the option to Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software. The Notebook should find and automatically install the updated driver. After the installation is complete, restart your Notebook. You could try using the Windows Update Troubleshooting tool to fix any updates that have not come through for Windows. This is a download that will run a check on your system and usually repair it. Please restart the Notebook twice to make sure all update have been completed!  Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Please click the Accept as Solution, to the right of the Thumbs up icon, if your issues is resolved.  Thanks.

A:HP 250 G2 G & H keys not working

@joe_pineapples If the keys were working fine in BIOS setup, I would suspect driver problems and suggest you reinstall the Chipset drivers from the HP product Win10 drivers page. But since they are also failing in the BIOS setup, in which Windows drivers are not loaded, then it is likely a keyboard hardware failure -- and in that case, the keyboard would need to be replaced. Unless you are experienced at doing this kind of replacement, I would advise against doing it yourself -- as it is easy to damage and/or break the fragile connectors, and if that happens, your laptop would be basically useless. My suggestion is that you take the laptop to a service facility and see what they will charge to run diagnostics and replace the keyboard. If you want to see what HP would charge, here is information on the Certified Service Centers:  http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00372730?jumpid=reg_r1002_usen_c-001_title_r0004Good Luck

katieb2016 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about problems with your new HP PC and wanted to help. You should not be having problems with a PC this new. While this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about diagnosing and repairing your machine remotely.I did this recently and the HP Tech was able to remotely access my PC from the Internet and do the needed repairs. When you call them, emphasize that you already did what HP told you to do and that has not corrected the problem -- and that you want the keyboard replaced.  They should be willing to do that under the current warranty at no charge to you. If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!Good Luck

Hello guys, I have an Acer Aspire 5755G running on Win7 x64 (i5, nvidia gt540m, 8GB ram), and for a few days now I'm having problems with the following keys:ESC, F3, F5, F6, F7, F9, F10, F11 When pressed, they don't work. The only functions keys that are working are: F1, F2, F4, F8 and F12, which is kinda weird since the others are not functioning. Here's what I tried so far:-Installed latest  Launch Manager-Installed latest display drivers (read on some forums that can be an issue)-Tested the keys in Safe Mode-Tested it in BIOS (for example I cant use ESC in bios or F5/F6 to change things)-Shut down the laptop from the power button, removed battery, plugged it back in.-Used an external wireless keyboard. All of the things that I tried above, resulted in failure. I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong after hours of searching the web and trying different things. I also don't have a system restore in place (I know, not a good idea) to test it out from a previous build. Any ideas or tips would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I haven't tested so far: Updating BIOS (No idea if that would fix it, also I know not to mess with BIOS updates unless strictly needed, don't know if that would fix anything or not. Also I haven't tried formatting and installing a new OS, simply because it would take me a day or so to backup everything and I thought this was a small issue. But if anything else fails, I guess I will have to try these last 2 th... Read more

What do you want the F-keys that don't seem to work, to do? How do you know they don't work? Have you tried, for example, to press Fn+F11 to see if the number lock will toggle on and off?. Or perhaps Fn+F3 to toggle your wireless adapter on and off? Jack E/NJ

Hello, I am having trouble with my X1 keyboard, after startup, some keys will not work from a period from one to three minutes, these include "backspace". "enter", "fn", and sometimes even the trackpoint's mouse keys won't work for a while. It can also occur at random moments while using the keyboard. It can be very frustrating while typing. I think it might be a software issue as the laptop sometime freezes when I try to close a process, and I have to close it manually via the task manager. Usually, when that happens, the same keyboard keys stop working. Has anybody else ever had this problem?

A:X1- keys not working

I have an X1 and do not have this problem, but I'll try to help. What are your specs?  Have you scanned for viruses, spyware, malware, etc.?  Most software problem are due to a lack of security on the users part.  Just out of curiosity what Anti-Virus are you using?

Hi.

This is really random. The keys are messing up. They either won't work or type double. I can only presume it's a virus. I've tried to gain access to my password protected user account via my guest account but I can't type the password in because of the way it's messing up. I want to use windows defender to try to sort it out.

What can I do to sort this?

A:Keys not working.

You might need to clean your keyboard. I recommend doing that first before checking for viruses.

Hi, I'm here again

I've noticed that my Fn keys are not working on my Hp laptop.. I searched on hp page for any signs of drivers that could solve it and I found this..

Code:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-91100-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=5072254&sw_lang=
I downloaded it and tried to install but the installation wasn't successful so it's still not working. Does anyone have some experience with it or know how to proceed?
Thank you

Until we diagnose the problem, try the following:

Do you know when the problem started? If you do, try to do a System Restore to before it began.
System Restore

Also try an SFC/SCANNOW command. If related system files are corrupt or have been deleted, it should be able to fix or replace them.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

A Repair Install will do much the same thing. This is normally for users who can't find a solution to their problem but don't want to do a clean install.
Repair Install

I also read that the Fn keys not working can be a malware problem. If it is, download and install both:
Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware, anti-virus and spyware removal download
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
and
avast!
avast! - Download Free Antivirus software or Internet Security
Avast Free Antivirus - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
and do a full system scan on both.

Everything was working fine until few days ago where LEFT, UP, PgDn, Home, Delete buttons stopped working.I tried re-installing the drivers and even updating the BIOS, but none of these seems to work.Is this simply a hardware malfunctioning or could this be fixed with some sort of system update?

Dear Sir  Welcome to Lenovo Community We can try 2 small simple steps :1 - i believe your battery non removable so please turn off your machine, remove the charger, press & hold the power button for 15 seconds then plug the charger & power on your device. ( now try your mal function keys if they are working or no, if no so please go to the next step.2 - try an external keyboard, if the same malfunction keys not working on the external keyboard as well so its software or settings issue but if its working well so 100% its hardware issue from your machine keyboard so in this case you should deliver your device to the nearest service center. Kindly find the phone number of Lenovo Call center in your country in the below link:https://support.lenovo.com/eg/ar/contactus/supportphonelist. Please tell me what happened after Best Of Luck

*NEW KEYBOARD*. Probably a few drivers weren't installed. Check my last thread if you don't know what I'm talking about. Anyway.
The letter "D" isn't working properly. You gotta click it a few times to work. How do I fix this? This is a "hama" keyboard.

A:Some keys not working

generic keyboards don't need drivers. If some keys don't work well in a new keyboard, it's 100% likely it is a faulty keyboard.
