Microsoft Office Outlook File Won't Open

Q: Microsoft Office Outlook File Won't Open

I have a Microsoft Office Outlook file that won't open. Each time I attempt to do so I get a box that comes up and reads cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open file: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Wrong Number.msg. the file may not exist, you may not have permission to open it, etc. I right clicked properties on the folder and it shows a 7.6 MB file that should open with Microsoft Office Outlook. Does anyone know why this may happen?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Had this error on a user's pc. Researched it here on the forum.
Found another thread with someone suggesting to use the following command to get it going:
Start->run..then type the following -> "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane"

This worked! The other thread has since been closed, but I wanted to reply and say WHY my users outlook suddenly started throwing out this error, because no one on the other thread was able to.

Turns out that my user had "accidentally" dragged their personal folder (containing 1000's of emails) into the "outbox".
Since the "outbox" folder is one to be used while an email is in the sending phase, it basically just shut down and wouldn't open for anything.

Luckily the command was able to get Outlook open and I was able to investigate what the user did to cause it.

Hope this info can help someone else.

We have all of our user's email set up to deliver to a personal folder that resides on a server with Windows 2003. We have a small number of people that get the error message below. They eventually get in, but either have to close outlook and reopen several times or they have to reboot their computer. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks!

"Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook, Unable to open the Outlook window.
The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists."

I have tried every suggestion I could find on the internet, but still haven't found a solution.

Dear AllI am getting the above error when I try to open Outlook 2007 on Windows XP. There is a quick fix to this which is to run 'outlook.exe /resetnavpane', which I find from a quick internet search. However, this is a one time fix, and I am having to do it every single time that I boot up. Is there a more permanent fix to this problem - hopefully the fact that the above fix works will identify the root of the problem. If anyone knows this and can help I would be very grateful. Thanks AdamEDIT: Moved to more appropriate forum

Hi everyone. I am having a problem opening a file that I was previously able to open and edit with no problem. I am getting two errors. One basically says that the file cannot be accessed and the other basically says that it cannot access the file and that the file may be encrypted. Well, the file is encrypted. I tried to unencrypt the file but I was unsuccessful. I originally encrypted the file using Windows XP which is the operating system that I use on my computer. I fear that the file has become corrupted and cannot be recovered. I can only hope that you all can help me to recover my file. I do not have a backup of the file but I do have a printout of it so I can make it up again if I have to. Unfortunately, I'll have to readd some stuff on it that I have added to the file since the file was printed. Luckily, it is a recent printout. So, can I recover my file? If so, how? I have included screen shots of the two errors but I blacked out the file name for privacy reasons. Thanks in advance!

If this is no longer an option, how can I place a photo in the text area and then follow with text explaining the photo? If this is not possible, I guess this new version is a downgrade!

Installed on my PC I have an old copy of Microsoft Office 2000. I use Word for my documents and made a spreadsheet on Excel for a game I play, other than that I have I have no knowledge of using the other features of this suite such as Access, Outlook or Powerpoint.

While downloading the latest Java update I noticed an ad for a freeware program called OpenOffice.org and after Googling it found that as far as I can see it is the same sort of thing as the Office 2000 suite only newer and probably more modern.

My question is, would the Open Office.org program be better than my outdated Office 2000 Suite and would I still be able to read my word documents etc using this program or would I have to keep Office 2000 as well.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered.

After much messing around I have discovered that if you use Windows 7 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program' to set default programs for file types, it breaks the File Types selection within a given program (in my case Microsoft Office Picture Manager) and you are no longer able to use the program itself to set file types only the Windows 7 function. You can tick/untick file associations all day long within Microsoft Office Picture Manager and nothing gets associated/unassociated. The File Types option is basically broken. I have also noticed this occur with 7-zip which actually causes a more serious issue. By default .zip is not listed in the Windows 7 list of 'Associate a file type or protocol with a program' window but is listed if you associate .zip with 7-zip's own file association option. BUT if you then subsequently use windows 7 to re-associate .zip with Windows Explorer, the .zip vanishes (because by default is is not listed), breaks 7-zips file association options and you can no longer associate .zip files with 7-zip, EVER. Basically I am curious as to why Windows 7 own file association options would break software's own internal file association options so badly to the point they are essentially useless and if there is a fix. I even tried completely reinstalling Microsoft Office and removing all references of it within the registry, no luck. Its not a big deal but I just found it odd that a fundamental piece of Windows 7 would harm the integrit... Read more

I don't believe it has anything to do with Office 2007/ Picture manager I use it myself,
I do not use 7-Zip but that seems the likely bug,
Windows handles Zip folders just like any other folder so 7-Zip is something I don't understand why people need or want it but I don't need any or need to make any Zip folders either

I realize that this is not primarily a Windows7 problem, but it just bothered me to see one program stopping me from setting the file associations for another program. And I need to vent.

I have been running both Libre Office (LO) and Open Office (OO) for months now, not a heavy user, just trying to keep both going while I figure which one I liked best. These apps share file extensions, and are very file compatible, and I had always been able to open the same document in either

Both families of programs pinned to the Start Menu had, for months, contained file history of many documents, some documents showing as history in both app-families, and able to be opened in either LO or OO. Yesterday, I upgraded Open Office. First thing I noticed, the LO apps pinned to the start menu had their document history icons changed to OO icons. Sure enough, these documents, in the history list of a pinned LO app, open in OO. Rats, I think--I guess I will have to re-assign the extensions to LO. . . . No can do! I have never had this happen before, but I now when I use "Open With" on a file with the shared extensions, (.ods, .odt,...) then "Choose Default Programs...", then "browse" to set a new default, the LO app does not stick. So far, I am unable to set the file association to any of the LO apps.

I have occasionally seen software, usually pretty sleazy and undesirable software, that would hijack file associations, would take-over as much of the compute... Read more

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

I hope this all makes sense.

If you have the installation media for Office 2013 you could uninstall it and re-install it - this will not affect your documents and other work as they are not stored along with the program files.

Alternatively, if this problem started recently, you could try restoring Windows to a time before this problem started and see if that fixes the problem.

alright. so i tried to open my microsoft word 2007. first, it was coming up as a memory problem, saying it didn't have the memory or disk space to run it.
i have system mechanic six so i ran memory mechanic which did nothing.
i then tried opening my other Microsoft Office programs, and they wouldn't open either.

i tried uninstalling all of it completely, in the registry and all.
then i reinstalled it, only not as the full pack, as the home & student pack.

now, the hourglass shows for one or two seconds, and NOTHING pops up. not the program, or error signs, or anything.

i don't know what's wrong with it. i ran updates for everything today (spybot, windows updates, system mechanic & AVG), and it won't system restore back to fixing the problem either.

help, please? i need to edit my resume & write half a musical, and i can't do it without word!

oh. i have windows XP, and i have framework 3.0 service pack 1.
or so my add/remove programs says.

i will be totally grateful to whoever helps me with this.

Currently running Windows 7 home premium. An automatic update has prevented me from accessing my documents and redirected me purchase Microsoft Office 2010. I installed Open Office but can only view individual documents by opening with Open Office. How do I run Open Office automatically? Do I uninstall Microsoft Office?

A:Microsoft Word to Open Office

Hi Xander82, and welcome to TSG.

The following page on the Microsoft web site explains how to set default programs to open different file types in Windows 7.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/change-which-programs-windows-uses-by-default

If your current trial installation of MS-Office has expired and you do not wish to purchase it, then yes, you can uninstall it.

Hi All of a sudden microsoft word will not open properly. I get the page with the hourglass but it doesn't open to a fresh page for typing and I cannot open any of my documents either. I have tried system restore but didn't have a point far enough back for it to work. I have tried reinstalling from a disk I had from my old computer, but it doesn't work either.
I don't know why it would suddenly just stop working, it keeps telling me to report the problem, which I have done endlessly.
I am on XP using an admittedly old version of Word (2000) but it has always worked just fine before.
Can anyone help me with this please? Many thanks.

i try to cut my outlook form C to D its stuck, after that i try to open my outlook, but its not working. it gives me message:
Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. the set of folders can't be opened. you don't have the permission required to access the file.

please help me, all my work on this email, and i need it.

A:Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window."

Your post is not very clear, but the way I read it, it looks like you have cut your Outlook program on drive C & pasted it on drive D, is this correct?.
If this is the case can you try to reverse the procedure & put it back on drive C exactly where was before.. Moving a program from one drive to another can cause the system to lose its connection & cause problems.

Used to I could surf the web and if I wanted to email one of the sites and ask a question or something I would just click on the email on the page and be able to email them. Well...my daughter did something and now this is what comes up everytime i click on email button on a site. It comes up in a gray box every time...I can't email any site I go to anymore.

Microsoft Office Outlook
The Extension Configuation file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Addins\fldpub.ecf" could not be installed. There is an error in the syntax or format of the file.

What can I do...this is awful.

Hi BleepingComputer,

I got a used NEC laptop from my firm and created an account to use the Microsoft Office Outlook. When open it a message is sent that for the authorization of the immediate searching function a component has to be downloaded and installed to the Microsoft Office system. When I click "yes" answering the question " Are you downloading this component from the Microsoft Office Center now?" I get a new message that the Windows can not open this file: rlidOfficeSearchInstallRTM?clid=1038&ver=128&app=outlook.exe

What should I do?

Sorry for the grammar mistakes I am Hungarian.

Thank you for your help in advance

Laszlo

Hi EgoDogg

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

What Firewall are you using and is it allowing your messaging programs access to the Internet?

What antivirus program are you using and is it configured to scan your incoming messages?
Disable it to see if that makes a difference.

Are you using a Router?
Look for an internet viewer content restriction setting.
Check its configurations to see if POP3 access is allowed.

Here are a few links that may offer a solution:

You receive the "0x80042108 Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming POP3 e-mail server" error message in Outlook 2002 and Office Outlook 2003

How to troubleshoot error messages that you receive when try to send and receive e-mail in Outlook and in Outlook Express

Lastly, have you contacted your ISP? Wondering if Adelphia may have made some changes??

Let us know what happens.

Hi I have recently installed office enterprise 2007 .I am using windows XP home edition. I can receive e-mails into the (microsoft office outlook ) part of the programme. I however cannot send e-mails out? I just keep getting message not sent. Can you help me. My ISP doesn't seem to know how to help me.

A:microsoft office outlook

Click Tools, then Account Settings
On the Email tab, you should have (at least) one account listed.
Highlight it and click Change.
Verify the SMTP settings (ISP should be able to tell you this - if not, it might be time to find another one...)
Click the "More Settings" button
Go to "Outgoing Server" tab
Put checkmark in "My Outgoing Server requires Authentication" (most ISP's require this to prevent spamming)
Leave the dot in "use same settings as logon server"
click OK, next, finish
click Close.
send a test message to yourself
post any errors you get, but if you do get errors, try unchecking the "My Server requires authentication" first, and try again.
