Lenovo Z580: can't boot from USB or access BIOS

Q: Lenovo Z580: can't boot from USB or access BIOS

Hello,I'm trying to clean install Windows 10 on my laptop but I'm having some problems. My laptop is an old Lenovo Z580 i7. Initially it had Windows 8 but then I somehow managed to clean install Windows 10 on it.I said somehow because I'm trying to do the same right now, but I can't manage to do it!The problem is I can't find any way to boot from USB to access to the Windows 10 installer. It's a well known problem with Lenovo Z580 that many people had. When I clean installed a couple of years ago I managed to boot it from the USB, but I tried so many things now and I can't do it!I tried clicking the Lenovo button (which is how it's supposed to work) but nothing happens. I tried to access the BIOS but it doesn't let me go on it, whatever button I press on boot. I tried to reboot from Windows 10 going on Settings -> Recovery, still I can't get to boot via USB.Does anyone have a suggestion about what to do?Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:can't access UEFI BIOS and BOOT menu on my lenovo z580

I own a Lenovo G700, and I have heard that Shift + F2 will get you into the BIOS. It might work if all else fails. You can also call Lenovo support or search around a bit more. But in my case I have to use the hardware OneKey Recovery button to access it.

Hi everybody, I saw many of problems like mine there, but I can't still do anything after several attempts to solve that.  It started two weeks ago.. I did cleaned my hdd, then to keep my device lil a bit update I have updated few drivers. First day, it was able to boot up after 10-15 attempts. (Holding down the power button, disc. battery, ac, reconnect and power button again). Since that time I was unable to get to the BIOS, set Boot order, and I couldn't see even the splash screen. Several days it did the same and the attempts grew up.  Last time it was able to launch, its about 4 days ago, I was watching, film then I felt asleep. When I woke up in the morning, the screen wasn't black but still slighty light(not off, fans were working, cooler was fine). Since that moment I couldn't boot it anymore. I tried reseting CMOS battery, tried to flash bios by using flash disk and Fn+R (laptop did different thing but after 15secs it has turned off).. I think it is frozen BIOS but I haven't clue what to do when I can't simply set the boot order.  Maybe I am wrong and the problem is only in the motherboard. Novo button works but everything I choose there, it ending by black screen again.  Thanks for help, maybe for any solutions how to fix this. I am prepared to buy another motherboard, but if I would be able to repair it on my own, I would happy. Thanks,Jakub.

I saw tons of information around the internet, many posts here in the Lenovo forums, i've downloaded countless files, used many programs, even backed up my own BIOS and nothing. I haven't seen even 1 solution from point A to point B for "How to backup and then flashback to the old bios again if needed", so please, tell me what can i do.1: How can i obtain a file of the old good original BIOS 2: I have 2 Lenovo z580 laptops and just one of them is with the new BIOS, the other one has the old BIOS - can i somehow make a file of the old BIOS, transfer it to the other laptop and then flash back to it. Thank you in advance, i hope to see a good answer these days, which will save me much troubles.

Good afternoon, I am quite disappointed because I see many problems with BIOS or BOOT problems for Lenovo Z580.I still can't find solution for my problem. The point is I can't go to the BIOS with lenovo recovery button. I had to pull out battery of bios and then I could go there. When I changed some options and saved the settings, the bios had still same options like before. I can't swtich the boot priorities. However I inserted boot flash with WIN10 to install that, but I can't because of the boot priorities. I am stucked. Also I tried all key shortcuts, It does nothing. I really don't want to  take out the HDD and re-install the windows in different PC via sata.  Can you tell me how should I boot the flash or CD with windows when I can't set up the boot priotiry? All I can see is blackscreen.  The point with lenovo recovery button is also weird. When i start laptop via this button I see the menu with options but after I choose one of them for example ''recovery" or "bios " It does nothing.  Thanks, David Byrtus

Lenovo Ideapad z580 Win10 64 I updated the bios with the private update (I know now that I should have used the public update) Then it showed this menu:http://i.imgur.com/kZaO2tf.jpg Whenever I selected HDD, the screen would go black for a couple of seconds and return to this menu. I fixed it by going into BIOS and changing bootmode from UEFI to Legacy. it booted but now everything is slow. It takes 5 mins to boot up and a further 15 minutes to reach usable speeds (I only have 4 startup programs). I tried changing it back to UEFI and it gives me the same problem as shown in the picture. I tried installing the public update, but it says that I cannot update as the current bios version is the same or newer. I went into BIOS and enabled BIOS back flash, and now when I try to start the public update, it just crashes. I also cannot access the start menu (this problem may be seperate and unrelated) I have backed up files and am prepared to do a clean reinstall of Win10, but I feel this won't work as it's a BIOS issue. The computer is unusably slow: what should I do? Thanks

My problem began when I updated my BIOS at Lenovo to version 5FC95WW. Now my laptop will not boot into Windows 7. It automatically goes to the Bios set up screen only. After I save and exit from the Bios screen & wait about 15 seconds it goes back to the 'set-up' screen again. It will not do anything else. Everything appears to be normal in that screen. Has anybody got any suggestions. Thanks.

Hi everyone,I'm having trouble assessing BIOS settings and Flashing BIOS (71cn51ww). I have an Ideapad Z580 that upgraded (accidently) to Win10.   About two months later, the PC crashed.  Eventually I returned to Win8 by using Novo button which provides a BIOS selection window and selecting option #4, Recovery.  I want to assess option #2 BIOS settings to boot up from the DVD drive or USB when needed. Options #1,#2 and #3 all boot up to Win8. I tried to flash the BIOS but I get this message, "IHISI: Get support mode error in SMI! SMI return code: 0xEF".   Is there anything I can do to unlock the BIOS to acess BIOS settings?  Also, none of these buttons (F1, F2, Fn+F2, F8 or F12) lead to "BIOS settings" during startup by either holding the button down or rapid pressing the button.  I'd like to have a dual boot option but I cannot even start thinking about that.  Has anyone found a solution for this?Thank you,Jim

Here's my sad story (I'm using a Lenovo Z580 laptop with Windows 7):

On Tues, 11/11/14 I installed all of the critical & important Windows Updates along with 2 additional updates (I don't recall what the additional ones were for).

After the updates completed I rebooted the machine, but the display did not come on. The lights and fan came on, but no display. I rebooted 3 or 4 more times and nothing changed. I plugged an external monitor into the laptop but got no display on either screen. From there I spent an hour or so powering the machine completely down, removing the battery, then rebooting while trying to enter either Safe Mode with F8 or the BIOS with F2 but each time I did the computer did not respond. A friend suggested removing and replacing the CMOS battery. I did that, put the machine back together, but now when I push the power button the lights and fan come on for about 1 second, go off for about 8 seconds, and that cycle (1 second on, 8 seconds off) repeats until I remove the battery. I did put back the original CMOS battery and the same thing continues to happen.

I've gone all over the internet for the past 2 days looking for suggestions and nothing I've found or done is resolving the issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Right now I've got a brick, so I'm pretty willing to try anything.

Steve

Lenovo z580 I5 6gb ram, 1tb GFT hdd win 8/64 - 18 months old. System is excruciatingly slow, all works but not in a manner that is usable.

I have exhausted my knowledge as to what the issue is. What I have tried:

Usual safe boot, remove AV, Java, combofix, rootkit checks, chkdsk, sfc, seatools long check, reseated hdd,
in place repair. Troubleshooter indicated no problems. Non solved the issue.

I even sent away for the Lenovo win8/64 re-install disks - took 8 hours to get the system re-installed, but still the same (patience is a virtue!).

After going back to manufacturer settings, I am coming down to hardware problems - in 12 years never had a processor issue - Seatools did not give me errors. although I am leaning to this as the source of the issue. Is there any other issue eg motherboard? Is there a way I can pin-point the issue without going out and buying more unnecessary replacement parts?

Please advise

A:Lenovo z580 very slow (15 minutes to boot)

Try removing half the ram then test. If still slow, swap ram and test again.

6GB is an odd number for ram. What mix of memory modules do you have?

I purchased a used Leovo Z580 laptop; the seller put in a SSD, no operating system (the way I asked for it). It's like brand new, I don't think anyone ever used it. I have another Lenovo Z580, so I am familiar with this model. I purchased it to install Linux Mint, which I put on a thumb drive after downloading the .iso file. When I turn on the laptop, I get a blank screen and then after several seconds I get a list of options for the Boot Menu, starting with Windows Boot Manager. All the other drives are there, including the CD/DVD, the SSD, and the USB thumb drive, as well as two PCI LAN options. When I select any of these, the menu disappears, and the computer apparently reboots as the same menu comes up after a delay of several seconds. When I choose App Menu > Setup, I get the BIOS Settings menu. Under the Boot tab, I make certain that "boot from USB" is enabled. I change the boot order, putting USB at the top, and make certain to save these changes. When I exit out and reboot, the exact same menu comes up, with the exact same boot order as before, i.e.: not the USB. What am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it? Booting while holding F2 doesn't work, nor does F12, nor does booting it without the battery in. This series of laptops is kind of weird in that holding down the "b" key seems to summon the menu, but that does not work with this laptop. Plus, I seem to be getting to the boot order menu, just that changes never seem to "stick." What a... Read more

Hi nikar15 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you have the machine number? Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.
Was it previously on Win8.1 ? Did you manage to create a recovery media ?

It would have to power drain the machine by removing the charger , battery and harddrive and to press and hold down the power for 12 seconds.

Without the harddrive and battery , try going to the BIOS by FN + F2 or use the Novo button to start. If you manage to get the BIOS set up screen , go to the Exit Tab and load optimal defaults and save and exit. Turn off and put back the battery and harddrive and check.

Update us how things go.

Regards

I'm guessing it's not but if it's still under warranty send it for repair.

Is the screen completely blank all the time, no text or anything else is displayed at all ?

Shine a light onto the screen and check if there is a faint display of text etc.

I am extremely upset because I think I have just ruined my laptop through trying to perform a BIOS update which LENOVO provided through the website.I had recently reset my computer to factory settings via the ONE KEY RECOVERY button. After basic setup and startup, I decided to install the BIOS update Windows 7 64 Bit for my PC. I downloaded the two files provided: public and private, and moved on to first click on the public file. This opened up another application with various options which the README file provided no information on.Anyway my computer began to restart itself and perform some operations to which it is now stuck on the BOOT MENU.Each time I turn on the POWER ON button, I am directed to the BOOT MENU, and I have no option to use my computer as normal. Please help me on this.

HI, Please skip to paragraph six for the actual issue I am having--the preceding paragraphs include info that may help to identify how to fix this. I am posting this using my HP desktop running Windows 7 as my Lenovo Ideapad 110 cannot connect to internet as explained below: Firstly, Sorry if I am breaking community guidelines in any way with this post. I did multiple searches but only came up with "forgot my BIOS password-how can I reset it" type posts. I am looking for urgent help to get back into the "BIOS" of my Lenovo IdeaPad 110 running preinstalled Windows 10. Everything was running fine until yesterday. This is when I made the mistake of thinking I knew more about the system than I actually seem to lol :/ So, yesterday--I entered the "BIOS" screen upon startup using F2 (function key+F2). I went on to disable wireless connection ability (to test something unrelated), and also switched Boot from strait UEFI boot mode to legacy/UEFI boot-with UEFI being the default boot option.  I don't know if any of the above have to do with the issue I am now having but I wanted to share it just in case. Here is the real issue as of now: Also yesterday at the same time while in "BIOS", I also went on to set an "admin password", the one you must type in before you can even get to the lenovo splash screen to enter "BIOS". Basically I believe this is referred to as a POST password although I am not an expert cleary (hence asking for the experts' he... Read more

Hi, I appreciate that this question may have been asked but I have never seen the answer. I have a Lenovo IdeaPad Z580, i3 running Windows 10 Home 64 bit. The HDD wasn't cutting it so I decided to upgrade it. I got my SSD the 'Sandisk Ultra II Plus'. Upon installation I am unable to anything with the new drive. Lenovo customer service wont help and I have no idea what to do. I thought I would just put the drive in and go into Boot Menu and select my USB and start installation but no. The lenovo logo would not even appear. If I press the small button by the on button it says Novo Button Menu but nothing happens if I select an option. Even if the old hardrive is in (which still works) and I attempt to access bios it just boots into Windows. I am left feeling completely helpless and since the laptop is easily out of warranty (bought 2012). I can't do that Any help would be appreciated no end Many thanks

I don't believe this is a bios issue that I've read many others having and fear it's MB/CPU related.  On startup, I get the tell tale black screen that just hangs. No splash screen, but everything else sounds active. Caps lock indicator will light up when toggled, although somewhat delayed. I've tried hooking up an external monitor, swapping ram, pulling battery and just about everything else, but none of it was successful. I've tried booting with the Novo button, and that does pop up, but selecting any of the 4 options results in the same black screen.    Haven't had any luck since it first happened getting past the boot screen.  Anything I'm missing trouble shooting wise? Or can anyone confidently say it is a MB/CPU issue?

Hi

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

Im working on a Toshiba Laptop A105-4284, Model #: PSAA8U-0FH02K that froze while trying to flash the BIOS, so I didnt know what else to do but shut it off. Now, when I try to boot it up, it gets stuck in the same place it did during the flashing; on the Toshiba splash screen with the status bar at the bottom showing about 20% complete. I cant get into the BIOS and cant boot into Windows. Other options available on this screen are Press F2 for System Settings and F12 for Boot Menu. Pressing F2 results in a beep and the status bar changing to "Please Wait..." but nothing else happens no matter how long I wait. Pressing F12 doesnt do anything. Pressing ESC takes me to a screen that shows the typical system info -- Phoenix Technologies Version 6.00; Intel Calistoga CRB.T3A Reference BIOS; VERSION.MAK 1.53; (looks like its running POST and recognizes CPU, Cores, No TPM or TPM has a problem, and system RAM and stops there. What is my best course of action?:

- shorting out the CMOS battery (I've tried this on the solder pads marked C88, with no laptop battery, with and without the wi-fi, ram and hdd installed; Im either doing it wrong or its just not working )
- trying to reflash BIOS chip (I tried this; turned the laptop on and held down the 'c' key to boot from cd, but still got stuck at the same place)
- replacing the BIOS chip
- something else?

Any guidance or information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

A:Toshiba A105: Failed BIOS flash; now no BIOS access & won't boot

Im trying to figure out why I've had no replies yet.

Have I asked a stupidly easy question that everyone is rolling their eyes to and cant bear to tell me the answer? Or have I stumped everyone?

I have a hard time believing this is a stumper. I've found the same question posted elsewhere on the net and shorting the CMOS seemed to help. That or removing the battery altogether (its soldered to the board), but I dont think Im doing it right. Can someone give me directions on that?

or is this just a lost cause? :-/

Thanks in advance

Hi Barmod ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

As you have tried doing power drain , it would be best to proceed with the recommended power check out as described from the hardware manual (page21) :

To verify a symptom, follow the steps below:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the battery pack.
3. Connect the AC adapter.
4. Make sure that power is supplied when you turn on the computer.
5. Turn off the computer.
6. Disconnect the AC adapter and install the charged battery pack.
7. Make sure that the battery pack supplies power when you turn on the computer. If you suspect a power problem, see the appropriate one of the following power supply checkouts: ? ?Checking the AC adapter? on page 21 ? ?Checking operational charging? on page 22 ? ?Checking the battery pack? on page 22

Isolating from the ac adapter with another known good charger can help determine other probable cause like dc in port issue ( specially if the cable get easily loose) , power button and board (test if Novo button can turn on the system) or the actual systemboard itself (where battery indicator light should be able to show up led for charging).

Update us how things go.

Regards

This machine has been working fine until the battery died. On purchasing a replacement and after charging I switched on the machine only to be confronted with a black screen with the icons above the keyboard flashing, then after a couple of seconds the machine re-starts with the same symptoms and continues to start-shutdown-start. I have removed the power adaptor and the battery and held down the power button for around 60 seconds without success. The reset/restore button that is located next to the power button only produces the same result when pressed.During the start-up process, NOTHING is seen on the laptop screen OR an externally connected monitor. I have also tried known good replacement RAM and hard drive and have installed a new CMOS battery but the fault persists. Can the BIOS be updated via a bootable USB flash drive without access to the screen? I seem to have a failed laptop Can anyone suggest a remedy?

Hi, I have bought a Lenovo z580(i3 processor, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM, 20V, 3.25A) 5years back and it has been working fine till 2 yrs until my adaptor got burst due to power fluctuations. Later I have purchased a new Lenovo adaptor-20V, 3.25A Power Specs, and I have noticed a wierd behaviour with it. The adaptor don't work when I connect it to a plug port at home but it works in the service shop. When I tried to switch on the adaptor in one of my friends home, again it didn't get on. I'm really worried what might be the problem. ADAPTOR DETAILS:P/N 36001651
