Unable to open Word files

Q: Unable to open Word files

So I downloaded the free trial of Office 365 directly from Microsoft, and have a couple issues:

WORD
When I try to open a file from Windows Explorer, a Window opens up asking me which program I want to use to open the file. None of the choices is the Word program that came with the Office 365.
Even stranger, I create a Word document and save it to my computer, when I try to open that same file the same window pops up
The only way I can open a file is to open the Word program and open the file from there.

EXCEL
When I try to open an Excel file from Windows Explorer, nothing happens. Same as above, the only way I can open a file is when I open Excel and open the file from Excel.

Can anyone help decipher whats going on here?

Preferred Solution: Unable to open Word files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Unable to open Word files

Yes, you need to associate the Docx and XLS extensions with the correct program.
I can't remember off the top of my head how to do it, and it is different for different versions of Windows.

I purchased my laptop few years back, Never had any problems opening my docs. Thought i solved this with system restore to earlier date. this worked and i was able to open those files. I now no longer can use system restore because it wont go back to an early enough date. not sure but i think problem came from automatic up-date. I am a computer idiot. Anybody, help! Quite desperate as this is affecting my work.

Sometime ago, I installed AGV as there seemed to be lil bugs in my comp that Norton could not get. AGV managed to detect and delete these bugs, but not all problems were solved. Norton's subscription was up and I was still quite peeved about Norton's inability to help...so I uninstalled it. Since then, there were more problems...

1) I'm unable to run help from Start...or msconfig from Start/Run or system restore. The error message is that it can't find the file. Even when I go to explorer to double-click the file directly, it still won't run.

2) I'm unable to open ANY file with MS word or powerpoint. It would say that the file is unavailable. It would also prompt me to replace existing normal.dot file. I'm unable to do the detect and repair, it would say error 1706...I do not have the installation CD with me anymore!

3) I'm unable to run any online virus scan (Trend, Panda...) even after I made changes to the security settings to allow for ActiveX.

4) I'm tried to reinstall Norton, but it can't run. It says 'CFGWIZ.EXE - Unable to locate component. . . . cctrust.dll was not found.'

I do run Spybot, Adaware, AGV, Winaso regularly.

Please help...thanks!

Hi there

I am currently unable to open MS Word attachments within MS Outlook 2000.
I have tried and can open other attachments other than Word.

I get two message alerts, as follows:

1)
Word cannot open the document.
Try one or more of the following
*On the File menu, click Open to open the document.
*Make sure the document has a .doc extension.
(C:\Windows\Temporary.doc)

2)
The document name of path is not valid.
Try one of more of the following:
*check the path to make sure it was typed correctly.
* On the file menu, click Open, Search for the file using this dialog box. (Files\OLKC340\FINAL)

-- If i click ok on these (this is the only option available) then I get taken to a new blank document.

If i follow their advice, I can see the documents, but it's a palaver having to do that when there should be a function available.

I am running Windows 95 on a Novell Network.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

Does anyone know how to open an MDI file in MS Windows? In my "My Documents" folder I have several files, most are photos, that are saved as MDI files by MS Windows. I read somewhere that MS Win will save a normal GIF or JPEG file as an MDI in certain situations like when old files are transferred from an older computer to a new one ?!?! Not sure if that is correct but can't find how to open these files. When you click open, the box comes up asking you what program you would like to use to open the file. I have chosen Word from the list to try to open the MDI files that I know were originally made in Word, but those files wont open either. I would be so very happy if someone could tell me how to open such a file as many are old photos that I no longer have copies of and would love to have again. If anyone knows what I am talking about, is there a way to avoid having files saved as MDI files ? Thanks so very much, MaryAnn

A:How To Open Mdi Files In Word?

Hi, AWriterWithGuts! Welcome to BC!MDI files are a special kind of image file that is made by Microsoft Office 2003 and later. Since it's a proprietary format, you need MS Office 2003 or newer to view the files. If you already have Office 2003 installed, look for a program called Microsoft Office Imaging in the Microsoft Office folder in your Start Menu.Alternatively, I found a free program that purports to be able to open these files. I haven't tested it so I can't vouch for it. It's at http://www.hot.ee/mdiviewer/

I never noticed this problem before - do I need some kind of CONVERTER to replace the missing "PROGRAM.EXE" . . . or am I supposed to open these .DOC files using FILE / OPEN ?

I was trying to delete an .exe file, and wasn't able to. So I went to change it (I'm not that good with computers, obvious huh..lol) and the window opened that asked what program to open it with, I hit word and it must have had that darn box checked at the bottom that says "always open files like this with this program" or something like that. So now all .exe programs open with word. My system restore was turned off so if that would have helped that is a moot point. I have a p4 2.6 running XP. I'm hoping there is a simple fix for this. I did go through previous problems in the forum and found this link http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm which gives a zip file to restore .exe files. However, my computer will not allow this zip file to replace or be added to my registry.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance for any help.

Please help if you can...Word and other office apps won't "Save As" or "open" new files when you are in the applications. Microsoft's site says a number of security updates are what's causing the problem. I went to Control Panels and deleted those updates..and I was suspicious that they were there in the first place, because I didn't download them. Anyway, the problem is solved after removing those and restarting...but guess what, every time I restart after that, the updates are back. So obviously there is some kind of virus that keeps downloading these things. Thanks for your time. A:Word Won't Open Files

If your problem was/is the result of installed Microsoft Critical Updates you have poorly written and/or non-compliant code in other (non-Microsoft) aps on your computer, pirated aps, or do not have all the critical updates installed that you should have installed to protect the software on your computer from being made to run malicious code on your computer due to unpatched exploits.

It is really amazing to me that anyone who does not have both advanced degrees and practical knowledge as well as significant experience in operating system and application programming can believe they would be in a better position than Microsoft's programing experts and engineers to determine what Microsoft's operating systems or other programs need to keep them functional and free of exploits used by those miscreants who intentionally write malevolent or malicious code that takes advantage of discovered exploits in Microsoft (or other) software or to decide what should be downloaded to counter such malevolent code.

People who do not keep their computers fully updated to eliminate security exploits are complicit in the pandemic spread of malware because not only do they place their own computers at risk because of their ignorance, but enable the spread of malware through their computers to infect other internet citizens.

I found an article on microsoft.com about this error message and how it tends to come up when your anti-virus, especially Norton's, isn't up-to-date. I don't have Norton's on that computer, and the AVG on there is up-to-date as of yesterday. Anyone have any thoughts?

Go to Office Update and search I could have sworn I read this issue in passing.I think an office update fixes it , but don't quote me.

This is a re-post from the Windows XP forum...

I have a Hijack This report if you need it.

A:Word Won't Open Files - Virus?

I don't know of a virus that would automatically download updates to Microsoft's software. Not to say there isn't one, but it doesn't make a lot of sense.Do you have Service Pack 2 installed on this computer? Start > right click on My Computer > Properties

Sometimes, you may be able to open .asd, .wbk or ~wrl####.tmp files by simply changing the file's extension. Often, renaming the file will not work, and opening it in Word will result in the following error:
There is a Microsoft article written for opening ASD files located here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827099. It didn't work for me.

Another solution is to download, install OpenOffice.org, and use Writer to open these files. That solution works, however it requires installing additional software which can take a while. I'm not a big fan of installing applications to resolve a one-time problem. Also, installing software may not be an option for you at all (if you're using a work computer, for example).

I came up with another solution that I haven't seen posted anywhere. Basically, the trick is to create another autosave file, and swap your file with it. When you re-open Word, your document can be "recovered". Here's the step-by-step:

1) In Word 2007, click the Office Button, and select "Word Options"
2) In the "Save" Section, change Autosave time interval to 1 min, and also note the location of autosave files. Click OK.
3) Type some text in a new Word document. I don't think Word autosaves blank documents, so don't skip this step.

4) Using Windows Explorer, open the folder where Word autosaves documents (you got the path in Step 2). Wait for Word to create a new autosave file. This should n... Read more

Howdy!

I cannot open any word files or any word office for that matter. I am operating Windows xp and just downloaded a trial version of windows 2003 to see if the problem will fix which it didnt.

This is what I get when I try to open a file:

The file so and so.doc is not available

These are other things I get:

The file normal.dot already exist. Do you wan to replace the existing file.

Then a template window opens

Changes have been made that effect the global template, normal.dot Do you want to save those changes
I will say when I do go to a file and it wont open...i do right click and it will open with notepad. It seems there is a link missing to word.

I may have had a virus that corrupted my word files....also I get winfixer that pops up in my browser every now and then.. HELP!!!!!!!!

Thanks,

BSPHILLIPS

I had recently installed Norton Antivirus for my PC. After installing this, I was unable to open any Word or Excel documents that are saved under my C: or A: drives. The error message I'm getting is "The file(filename) is not available". My operating system is Windows XP-Pro. And I'm using Windows 2002. Thanks for any help.

Hi, I just uninstalled something related to Microsoft Office and now I can't seem to open any .docx files in my documents anymore. I am currently using Microsoft Word Starter 2010. The only way I seem to be able to open the files in my documents folder is opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first then go to file -> open the .docx file. If I try opening it directly from my documents folder without opening Microsoft Word Starter 2010 first, there's a popup that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

See if this helps you to "create an association in the Default Programs control panel":
(You might want to watch it in the full screen mode and at 720p.)

I use Dell 8300 - XPHome : I created 2 very important files in word - Chap 1 and Chap 2 of a book. I used "always create backup". When I go to open either of these chapters, I get a blank page. But, if I press on Back-Up Copy of either chap, it opens. It bothers me that I am not in the ORIGINAL file which will not open.
How can I change the back-up file to become the real file or, file which I can open without it saying that it is the back=up file?.... thanks, missfuffy

Says I can't open document because 'word has insufficient memory' -- I'm assuming this is related to the 62% resources free on bootup...should be 80 if i remember (this is win98) -- any ideas other than that as to why it won't save/open?

and if you agree its the resources problem - how to fix? This is my cousin's old machine...IBM Aptiva...i think it's a duron, only 64mb dedicated system memory...88 included onboard vram.

A:Word won't save or open files

I got system resources free up to 88% but it still won't open documents. If I open a document straight from my documents, it will open. But the 'open' command won't work in Word. I can't use the 'save' or 'save as' command.

I can open recent files though in the 'file' menu. Any ideas? Seems really weird.

Also, appears to be true in all Microsoft applications, not just Word.

I have older computer running Vista. The system info is as follows:
-------------------
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4
OS Version: Microsoft® Windows Vista? Business, Service Pack 2, 32 bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P9400 @ 2.40GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 1999 Mb
Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 775 Mb
Hard Drives: C: 74 GB (17 GB Free); D: 74 GB (45 GB Free);
Motherboard: Dell Inc., 0D201R
Antivirus: None
--------------------

Suddenly it won't all word, excel, pdf, jpg files with message "the file format is not supported or the file is corrupted". I checked the system and found all those files were modified around 7:30PM, March 3, 2017. I copied the files to another good computer and they cannot be opened too. I created new files on the infected computer and they are ok to open.

I read some old post regarding the Ransomware, but on my computer I didn't find any decrypt instruction files, I also ran the IDTool and it didn't report anything.

I don't have regular backup of the files, is there any possibility to identify the virus and recover the file? Thanks!

I previously saved 2 MS Word files to floppy, but can not now 'Open' either. 1st request comes back "Word cannot open document.." even though it has right address and .doc.
Other request comes back "Word failed reading from this file. Please restore network connection or replace floppy and retry." I am not on network, and file is only on that floppy.
Any suggestions how I can 'Open' these 2 files?
