Excel File now says File Format or File Extension is not valid...

Q: Excel File now says File Format or File Extension is not valid...

I have been using this same Excel file for many years. I viewed on my new home laptop 2 days ago, using a 2010 Excel Version. It was created on 2007.

I opened it on my work computer, version 2003, and now get the above error message on both machines. The file can no longer be opened.

I have tried emailing it, still won't open.

I have chenged the file type to both .xls and .xlxs neither open.

I downloaded the program on the home page of this site, and it said no file issues, no known problems for this file.

When I click Open File, it still shows where I had the file opened (the file name in lighter gray font - but cannot open.) The original file is in black, and I can open. But, get that message.

I also tried to open and fix - and I tried both options, with formulas, and without formulas, and all it opened was foreign characters.

Any other suggestions? Or is this file gone? Unfortunately, my most recent back up is 3-4 months old...

Thank you for your help,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Looking at the file in NotePad, that isn't an Excel file at all. It was created by SigmaPlot 9.0 Notebook , which is tied to Jandel Notebook Format.
There are sites that will recover such files for you, like this one (I have no experience using them, however.)

Hello everyone:

Please someone -- can anyone help -- I have noticed a problem on one of my computers, which uses Office 2007, that when i attempt to do anything on my virtual machine (which uses Office 2003) within excel, invariably the file gets corrupted. I am not sure why this happens, because it doesn't always happen right away. However, after creating a file on my VM and then it gets saved on my regular machine, either after a few sessions or immediately, i get the error "file format not valid". I have spent over two weeks on this file (yes, using it everyday and saving/opening with no problem up until yesterday) and it has a lot of critical, non-sensitive data. I have tried calling my helpdesk (they were of no help), tried saving the file as *.xlsx, tried opening in word and wordpad (I could see some data -- but not all the critical data was there). PLEASE -- I have already bought one of those Recovery tools (which didn't get even 50%, or at least the critical updates i made yesterday). I can't afford to spend more -- is there anyone who would be willing to help a lost soul get this data back??? I have attached the file

Hi there
on the download is there a SAVE AS option -- that might work if you change the default to .xls

Otherwise I think there are some xlsx viewers where you could view the file or change it to xls. (Note changing to xls will possibly remove some formatting etc).

So I recently had a case of hard drive failure in which basically nothing of value was recovered in the original directory structure, however the drive was full of .chk files from a chkdsk run. I ran a quick script to change all of the extensions to .jpg, and most of the files were in fact intact.

Many of the files, however, are either corrupt, or are simply not JPEG files, and so will not open with the .jpg extension. Is there any batch renaming application that can analyze files by their header data, and append the appropriate extension automatically for the most commonly used filetypes?

A:Batch file extension processing by file header?

Usually file recovery software does that (before the files are recovered as chk files). I don't know of any app that will do what you said though. But if you don't have too many files, use a hex editor to open them and rename accordingly. I use winhex (just for viewing though), but any other will do. Here's a few strings that may help:
JFIF .jpg
RIFF AVI LIST .avi
PNG .png
MZ .dll or .exe (at least 32-bit - dunno how they are for 64-bit or 16-bit executables)
moov somewhere in the file .mov (may not be at the beginning)
GIF89a .gif
ftyp .mp4
**\rtf1 .rtf
000001BA21000100 (in hex) .mpg (MPEG-1 at least - don't have MPEG-2 samples to test ATM)

I think this problem may have to do with Windows 7 vs Windows XP. With Excel 2010 running under XP this does not happen.

Under Win 7 running Excel 2010, when saving a spreadsheet as a tab delimited text file (.txt). Excel 2010 appends the .txt file extension to a file that already has an existing file extension. For my work I must save excel files as xxxxxxx.upl but excel always saves the files as xxxxxxx.upl.txt. This only occurs under Win 7, not XP which is why I think it is an OS issue.

How can I fix this? I am guessing it is a registry fix, but I don't have any ideas of how to fix it. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

If I add double quotes around the file name I want, like "xxxxxx.upl" the file will save as a tab delimited text file and Excel will then identify the file type as a UPL file.

What I want:

What I get without the "xxxx.upl" file name:

A:Stop Excel 2010 from appending .txt to file with existing extension

Yep, that option is called "Hide extensions for known file types".
Likely, on your XP system it is turned ON (checked) and on your win 7 machine is it turned OFF (unchecked).
But that would work for all known file types, not just the one specified.

Hello, I use Notepad++ to edit Python files which have the file extension .py such as "sample.py"

I would like to set Notepad++ as the default program to open .py files.

When I open a .py file I get the popup asking me which file I want to use to open. But I do not get the choice to set the default program to open this extension.

When I go to Settings|Choose Default Apps By File Type the .py extension is not listed.

Looking through the registry I see that there is no .py handler.

Q: What is the method to manually add a file extension and associate it with a program?

Thanks!

A:File extension not in file association list

hey I figured it out!

1) Settings - Indexing Options
2) Advanced button
3) File Types tab
4) Add New Extension to List box, type in extension (without a period) such as "py"
5) Click OK and Close
6) Settings - Chose a default app for each type of file
7) Scroll down to file extesion
8) click Choose a Default
9) select a program
10) The first time you open a file with this new association, you will get a popup asking you which program to use to open this file type. Your default program will already be selected and a checkbox with Always use the program to open this type of file will already be selected as well, just click the program type. After this you are golden.
11) Damn I spent 3 hours on this! Ugh!

Hi there,

I am trying to use SQL.REQUEST to pull data from one excel file (a master data file) to another one, and I can't get it to work. I think I don't have the correct connection string specified.

I'm using Excel 2002 on Windows 2000.

The task is, I need to build dynamic queries based on other cells in the "output" spreadsheet, such as, get a count of all records in the master file where the date field is equal to [cell reference] and the ID field is equal to [another cell reference] and a third field is equal to [third cell reference]...
So that, if the values in those referenced cells change, the records that match (and get counted up) will be different.
Also, there will be at least 10 different queries (I do a sum on a field that is a time duration, an average on that same field in another, etc) in different places on the spreadsheet.

I was able to get a simple query to work in Microsoft Query if I used static values, ie, I typed them directly into the criteria... however, these need to by dynamic so that when the same spreadsheet (a report template) is "saved-as" and new values for the criteria are input, the queries don't have to be re-created.

So, using MS Query, I can connect to the master data file and get the correct result... but I believe what I really need to use is SQL.REQUEST, so I downloaded the ODBC add-in and installed that.
I just can't seem to figure out what my connection string argument needs to be.

A:Solved: sql request in excel file, to another excel file - connection string?

Nevermind folks - I googled +excel +"connection string" for probably the 20th time in 4 days... I usually investigate all result about 7 pages deep before giving up, and this morning, all of a sudden a new result popped up right at the top:
http://www.connectionstrings.com/excel

at about the same time, my boyfriend finally took a look at it, and he came up with this result: http://www.devlist.com/ConnectionStringsPage.aspx

I used the syntax in this example
Code:
Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\MyExcel.xls;Extended Properties="Excel 8.0;HDR=Yes;IMEX=1";
AND IT WORKS!
(I almost got up and danced, I was so happy)

Just thought I'd come back and post the solution, in case anyone else ends up finding this thread in the same position I was in.

Now how do I mark this thing solved?

Since then the two files have become corrupted twice. I have looked at the 3rd person as a suspect but see nothing different about their configs. What could continually cause a workbook to become corrupt?

A:Excel file format invalid

I have found that many users can still open these files using Word and I still get this niggling little feeling that for some reason they're saved from Word because mailmerging is often involved. If you can open them using Word, click inside the table that is created, hit Table-Select table, copy, and paste back into Excel. Formatting and formulas are lost.

Sorry, no answer as to the cause--just know it happens all the time. (I think it has something to do with the permissions/releasing of the file on the server.)

I am having trouble opening some Excel attachments within emails received. I have Windows 95. When attempting to open it, an error message says, "whatever the file name.xls: file format is not valid". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks very much.

A:Excel 95 file format error

Hi,
Are the files sent to you as a routed workbook?

If yes, this article describes the symptoms: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q211/9/19.ASP

Or are you using a version prior to Excel 97 (you mention Excel 95, which is Excel 7.0) to open Excel 97 or Excel 2000 files? (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q170/3/11.ASP).

Excel is only upwards compatible (meaning you can open files of an earlier version, but not of a later version).

If the image files you're unable to open were obtained via download to a folder name that includes certain special characters (for example, the symbols seen in "【Pictures】") this creates a file path that, although acceptable to the operating system, is not recognized properly by IrfanView (or other apps), yielding the somewhat misleading "Can't Read File Header, Unknown file format" message (should really say "File Not Found"). Simple solution is to rename the download folder, or move the image files to another directory with a name that's recognized properly by IrfanView. Hope this helps some who are encountering this confusing error!

Can it be done?

Some video files I have are not supported in WMP, or in WMM. I have a 3rd party media player that plays them, but it has limited editing capabilities.

If I pull the vid files through a file recovery utility, set to recover video files, in MPEG-2 format perhaps, will they recover into a format that's supported in Windows applications? Would there be quality loss of the vids in changing the format?

Iuse winrar and need to know if there are any differences between the different compression formats ( zip, rar, tar) and if one of them is more robust than the rest?

A:Do you have a prefered file compression software or file format?

Hi,

.tar is Unix-based and natively doesn't compress data (it was originally designed for tape backups in the 70's). If you use TCShell, Bourne, Korn etc. in a Unix environment, then you can use the gzip command line argument to compress a modified version of the .tar format.

There is little difference between compression ratios for .rar (propreity format) and .zip (now public domain) formats - both are extremely robust and support AES encryption.

Personally, I prefer the .7z format used by 7ZIP - it provides custom compression ratios, and on very large files consistently achieves about 10% greater compression, albeit it at a slower speed (greater compression = slower speed).

I regularly use the command line version of 7ZIP within .BAT files to compress data before using ROBOCOPY to backup the .7z files.

Regards,
Golden

Hello,

This is my first post in this forum, and I appreciate any advice I recieve about this:

I recently received an email from someone who told me they sent an excel file. I normally recieve excel files weekly from this person, l so I have no reason to belive it was not.

When I tried to download it ("save as", not "open"), the file name was "CAD2359." and did not have a file extension. I changed the name to "new users", added an xls after the "dot" and the file downloaded, then I opened the Excel file normally.

Later, I saw in the folder there were two files. One called "new users.xls" which is functioning correctly, and another called "new users." with no file extension (or recognizable icon).
- If I try to open that file, I get the "Open with" box, asking me to choose the program I wan to open it with.
- If I try to change the name of the file, I get an error message "Can not rename file. Can not read from source file or disk"
- If I try to delete the file, I get an error message "Can not delete file. Can not read from source file or disk"

Any ideas what I can so? I use XP pro.

Thanks!

Hi, when I try to open my excel file, I get the error 2010 calling list.xls:: file format is not valid. Does anyone have a program they can use to try and open my file. I'm assuming it was corrupted the last time I tried to save it.

A:file format is invalid error in Excel 2010

are you getting it in all excel files? Or only the one?

You can try downloading openoffice; I've used that to fix many MS Office corrupt files in the past, particularly .ppt files.
